Biden to embark on West Coast fundraising swing before expected election launch

    [ad_1]

The White House did not comment.

Biden and Democrats are gearing up an expected reelection campaign, including by dispatching Vice President Kamala Harris to fundraisers of her own in her home state. On Friday, she headlined a midday event in the San Francisco suburb of Hillsborough at the home of longtime fundraiser Stefanie Roumeliotes and her husband, John Costouros.

Despite feeling no pressure to formally announce his re-election campaign, Biden has already held a handful of fundraisers out east to benefit the Democratic National Committee. Earlier this year, he gave a speech to DNC members in Philadelphia that aides described as a soft launch of sorts.

The president’s latest visit west is expected to include a mix of political and official events. Last year, he joined a stampede of Democrats who got behind Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, with Harris making several visits on behalf of Bass’ campaign and swearing her in.

Biden returned in mid-January to Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties to visit with communities and first responders impacted by the major winter storms.

Hyderabad: ORR up for lease, Rs 6000-7000 cr revenue expected

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is expected to get another record revenue through Toll, Operate and Transfer (TOT) of Outer Ring Road (ORR). Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), which is engaged in the operation and maintenance of outer ring road, has decided to lease the 150 km long expressway on TOT basis for a period of 30 years in public, private partnership.

In this regard, HGCL has summoned bidders to execute the contract on lease. “As per our expectations, the 30-year lease will generate revenue of Rs 6,000-7,000 crore for HGCL,” said a senior HGCL official.

Currently, HGCL gives operation and maintenance contracts to private agencies on an annual basis. However, it had some hurdles for the company in executing the annual lease contract. HGCL has to invite bids from private agencies in advance every year for next year’s contracts and it takes a long time to finalize the budders.

For example, if the contract expires in March, bids have to be invited from December at least 90 days in advance. Apart from this, sometimes it has happened, in which some agencies approached the court for extension of the contract citing various reasons. To resolve all these issues, HGCL has now decided to extend the lease period to 30 years.

The office bearer said that the 30-year lease period has been approved in the recently held cabinet meeting and it is being done as per the guidelines of the National Highways Authority of India.

  • Oldest complete Hebrew Bible expected to break auction records

Oldest complete Hebrew Bible expected to break auction records

    [ad_1]

The earliest and most complete Hebrew Bible ever discovered – a “vital touchstone of human history” that dates back more than 1,100 years – is to be sold at auction.

The ninth-century volume, referred to as the Codex Sassoon, is a critical link between the Dead Sea scrolls and the Bible of today. It is being offered by Sotheby’s with an estimate of $30m-$50m (£25m-£42m), making it the most valuable historical document or manuscript to appear at auction.

Composed of 24 books divided into three parts – the Pentateuch, the Prophets and the Writings – the Hebrew Bible is the foundation of Judaism and other Abrahamic faiths. In Christianity, the texts are referred to as the Old Testament and are incorporated into the biblical canon. Islam also holds the stories of the Hebrew Bible in special regard, with many of them included in the Qur’an and other significant works of Islamic literature.

“The Hebrew Bible is the sacred, foundational text for peoples across the globe,” said Sharon Mintz, Sotheby’s senior Judaica specialist. “For thousands of years, the faithful have closely studied, analysed, mediated on and delved into the holy scriptures – it is the first book of the people of the Book – to acquire wisdom and attain spiritual enlightenment.

“In Codex Sassoon, a monumental transformation in the history of the Hebrew Bible is revealed, bringing to light the full story of the Hebrew Bible that had previously never been presented in book form. [It] marks a critical turning point in how we perceive the history of the divine word across thousands of years, and is a transformative witness to how the Hebrew Bible has influenced the pillars of civilisation – art, culture, law, politics – for centuries.”

Before the first codices (manuscripts in book form) of the Hebrew Bible, there existed only portions or sections of biblical texts in scroll form. Known as the Dead Sea scrolls, they date to the third century BC – but they were copied without punctuation or vocalisation and contained no verses or chapters. This meant the correct reading of the scrolls was not easily apparent; instead Jews in antiquity relied on inherited oral traditions to understand, preserve and transmit the words of the Hebrew Bible.

The Codex Sassoon is named after its prominent modern owner, David Solomon Sassoon (1880-1942), who assembled the most significant private collection of Jewish artefacts and Hebrew manuscripts in the world.

It comes to auction from the collection of Jacqui Safra and will be sold in New York this May. The record for the most valuable historical text and manuscript sold at auction is held by the first printing of the US constitution, which sold for $43m in November 2021.

While Codex Sassoon has been recognised for its importance by scholars for generations, it has remained virtually out of public view for centuries and will be exhibited for the first time in 40 years next week at Sotheby’s London before a worldwide tour.

The manuscript also includes annotations from several owners throughout the centuries, including an entry dating to the early 11th century referencing a sale by Khalaf ben Abraham, assumed to be a near eastern businessman active in Israel and Syria, to Isaac ben Ezekiel al-Attar.

In the 13th century or later, the codex was dedicated to the synagogue of Makisin (present-day Markada in north-east Syria). When the town of Makisin was destroyed, perhaps by the Mongols in the 13th century or by Tamerlane’s troops in 1400, the codex was entrusted to the care of a community member, Salama bin Abi al-Fakhr. Sassoon ultimately acquired the codex in 1929.

Richard Austin, Sotheby’s global head of books and manuscripts, said Codex Sassoon was “undeniably one of the most important and singular texts in human history”.

Turkey-Syria earthquake deaths expected to top 50,000: UN aid chief

    turkey syria earthquake refugees 02351

The death toll from a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria is likely to “double or more” from its current level of 28,000, United Nations relief chief Martin Griffiths told Sky News.

“I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble, but I’m sure it will double or more,” said Griffiths after travelling to the city of Kahramanmaras in Turkey, the epicenter of the first earthquake. “We haven’t really begun to count the number of dead,” he said.

The estimate would take the tally of deaths to around three times the 17,118 dead following the huge earthquake in northwestern Turkey in 1999.

On February 6, a series of large earthquakes hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

Rescue teams are still out searching for survivors. “Soon, the search and rescue people will make way for the humanitarian agencies whose job it is to look after the extraordinary numbers of those affected for the next months,” Griffiths said in a video posted to Twitter.

Almost 26 million people have been affected by the earthquake, the World Health Organization said.

  • Indian-American Nikki Haley expected to announce US Prez bid

Indian-American Nikki Haley expected to announce US Prez bid

    [ad_1]

Washington: Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley is expected to announce her bid for the 2024 US election run as she sent out invitations for a ‘special announcement’.

Taking to Twitter, Haley wrote, “My family and I have a big announcement to share with you on February 15th! And yes, it’s definitely going to be a Great Day in South Carolina!”

She has sent out invitations for a “special announcement” on February 15 when she is expected to declare her 2024 US presidential run.

Earlier, Fox News reported that Haley feels that she could be the ‘new leader’ to take the country in a new direction and that Joe Biden may not get a second term as US President.

The former South Carolina governor and US ambassador to the United Nations said she plans to run for the presidency in an interview with Fox News on Thursday.

“Well, when you’re looking at a run for president, you look at two things. Your first look at, ‘does the current situation push for new?’ The second question is, ‘am I that person that could be that new leader?’ You know, on the first question, you can look all across the board, domestic, and foreign policy. You can look at, you know, inflation going up, the economy shrinking, government getting bigger, you know, small business owners not being able to pay their rent. Big businesses getting these bailouts, all of these things warrant that, yes, we need to go in a new direction,” said Haley.

“So do I think I could be that leader? Yes, But we are still working through things and we’ll figure it out. I’ve never lost a race. I said that then I still say that now. I’m not going to lose now,” she added.

Haley, 51, then listed her accomplishments in her career, saying that as governor, she took on a state that was hurting and made it “the beast of the Southeast.” Then, she said, as ambassador to the United Nations, she “took on the world when they tried to disrespect us.”

Haley served as ambassador to the UN under President Donald Trump for the first two years of his presidency, from 2017 through 2018.

If she launches a presidential bid, Haley will face her former boss in the GOP primary. Trump, the only president impeached twice, announced a third presidential campaign in November.

Haley, who resigned from the Trump administration in October 2018, said she had done a great job as governor and ambassador.

Haley, the second Indian-origin governor of Louisiana after fellow Republican Bobby Jindal, said it was time for new leadership in the Republican Party. During the interview, Haley also emphasized that President Biden, a Democrat, should not be given a second term. The next US presidential election will be held on November 5, 2024.

Before serving in the federal government, Haley was the governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017. She had previously served as a member of the state House of Representatives.

Hyderabad: FIA president expected to attend inaugural Formula E race

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Mohammad Bin Sulayem, president of the world governing body for four-wheel racing FIA, has been invited to attend the inaugural Formula E race in Hyderabad on February 11.

Bin Sulayem, who took over the reins of the FIA from Jean Todt in December 2021, is expected to attend the race of the all-electric series alongside many other dignitaries from within and outside India.

“He has been invited to attend the race and he is expected to attend,” a Formula E source told PTI on Wednesday.

The organisers of the race — Greenko and Telangana government — are racing against time to ready the 2.83km-long street circuit. Most of the infrastructure will be temporary but final touches are being given to the team garages, which will be a permanent structure around the track.

Formula E is the first FIA world championship-status event taking place in India since the Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix in 2013.

MotoGP, the pinnacle of two-wheel racing, is scheduled to host its first round in India in September.

  • Florida legislators expected to tackle Disney in special session next week

Florida legislators expected to tackle Disney in special session next week

    [ad_1]

    disney florida feud 62647

Reedy Creek Improvement District is the name of the special district that was created by Florida legislators more than 50 years ago and which has largely been governed by the entertainment conglomerate for more than five decades.

Last year, legislators moved quickly to dissolve Reedy Creek during a special session after Disney officials spoke out against a new law restricting how sexual orientation and gender identity are addressed in public schools. The measure, called “Don’t Say Gay” by its opponents, prohibits educators from leading classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for students in kindergarten through third grade. LGBTQ+ advocates say the measure could lead students to increased bullying or even suicide.

While DeSantis was not the initial driving force behind the controversial law, he became a champion of it and was instrumental in pushing through the plan to strip Disney of its special status in the aftermath. DeSantis, now seen as likely presidential contender, repeatedly used his battle against Disney on the campaign trail last year as an example of his resistance to “woke” corporations.

But while legislators passed a bill targeting Reedy Creek they did not address ongoing questions about district debts and whether they would be shifted to local taxpayers.

A spokesperson for Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

DeSantis has pledged that a plan would be developed to ensure that taxpayers wouldn’t be responsible for the debts. In early January, the administration said it had come up with a proposal that would have the state control the special district and at same time ensure that Disney would be responsible for any debts previously incurred.

“The corporate kingdom has come to an end,” Taryn Fenske, a spokesperson for DeSantis, said earlier this month.

State Sen. Linda Stewart, an Orlando Democrat whose central Florida district is close to Disney World, said in a message that “we have not received anything yet! Just been hearing rumors for the last couple of weeks.”

DeSantis has relied more and more on special sessions to take care of high priority legislation, a move that guarantees more sustained media coverage — including among friendly conservative outlets — than during the somewhat hectic 60-day regular session where multiple controversial issues may be considered at once. State legislators in Florida are already expected to take up a major expansion of vouchers, a measure to eliminate concealed weapons permitting and possibly new abortion restrictions in the session scheduled to start in March.

  • IMF: Global growth to slow less than expected

IMF: Global growth to slow less than expected

    [ad_1]

    imf ukraine surcharges 11293

Global growth is slowing down less than previously expected, the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday in its updated World Economic Outlook.

World output is set to grow by 2.9 percent this year, down from 3.4 percent in 2022, weighed down by tightening monetary policy and the war in Ukraine.

That’s an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared with the 2.7 percent and 3.2 percent figures forecasted in October, thanks to stronger-than-expected growth in the third quarter of 2022.

Growth will resume in 2024 at 3.1 percent.

“This time around, the global economic outlook hasn’t worsened,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, IMF chief economist and research director, wrote in a blog post. “That’s good news, but not enough.”

Eurozone growth is expected to reach 0.7 percent this year—a 0.2 percentage-point upgrade — and 1.6 percent next. In 2022, the IMF reviewed eurozone growth upward to 3.5 percent from 3.1 percent previously because of lower energy prices and additional demand-side support measures.

Global headline inflation has peaked in the third quarter of last year, the Fund said, pushed down by a decline in commodity prices. But so-called core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, has yet to peak, spurred on by tight labor markets which generate strong wage growth.

The IMF expects global inflation to fall this year to 6.6 percent and to 4.3 percent in 2024, down from 8.8 percent in 2022 on average. Both headline and peak inflation are expected to remain higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2024.

70-plus Indian startups show exit door to 21K techies, more expected

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As global layoffs deepen, Indian startups are not far behind and have sacked thousands of employees in the past 3-4 months, with many more to be given pink slips in the coming months amid deepening funding winter.

In India, more than 21,000 employees have been laid off by more than 70 startups to day, including from unicorns like BYJU’S, Ola, MPL, Innovaccer, Unacademy, Vedantu, Cars24, OYO, Meesho, Udaan and many more.

The edtech sector has laid off the most employees, with 16 edtech startups laying off more than 8,000 employees to date.

With the onset of January, more and more Indian companies are slashing jobs across the spectrum. The new year has already seen more than 16 homegrown startups sack employees in the country.

Social media company ShareChat (Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd) has laid off 20 per cent of its workforce due to uncertain market conditions.

Backed by Twitter, Google, Snap and Tiger Global, ShareChat has about 2,300 employees, and the layoff impacted about 500 people at the company,

Healthtech unicorn Innovaccer has sacked nearly 245 employees, or about 15 per cent of its workforce, across teams in India and the US.

Innovaccer cofounder and CEO Abhinav Shashank cited an “uncertain macroeconomic environment” as the reason behind the job cuts, according to an internal mail sent to employees and accessed by leading startup news portal Inc42.

This was the second layoff at the company in around 4-5 months’ time amid the deepening funding winter and recession fears.

In September last year, Innovaccer laid off nearly 120 employees, or less than 8 per cent of its workforce.

Online food delivery platform Swiggy confirmed that the company is laying off 380 employees as food delivery growth slows.

MediBuddy, an end-to-end digital healthcare platform in India, has laid off 8 per cent of its workforce, around 200 people, across all departments as a restructuring exercise.

Homegrown online vehicle repair platform GoMechanic, backed by Sequoia India, has laid off 70 per cent of its workforce as the startup struggles to raise funds amid serious concerns of accounting troubles.

The company has asked the remaining staff to work without pay for three months, according to reports.

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) voice automation startup Skit.ai has asked more than 115 employees to go, mostly from its India team, as part of the “restructuring process” amid the deepening funding winter.

Even IT giant Wipro has laid off more than 400 fresher employees for poor performance in internal assessment tests.
