Amit Shah to attend two BJP events in Bihar on April 2

    [ad_1]

Patna: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will reach Bihar on April 1 to participate in two BJP events, newly-appointed state President Samrat Chaudhary said on Thursday.

Shah will attend two events in Sasaram and Nawada districts on April 2 with the aim of strengthening the party structure in Bihar ahead of Lok Sabha election 2024.

“Amit Shah will come to Patna on April 1. He will stay the night and go to Sasaram city in Rohtas district the next day. After that event, he will also go to Nawada as well. Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, his visit is important and it will give fresh energy to the BJP workers,” Chaudhary said.

After the formation of Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, this is Amit Shah’s fifth visit to Bihar.

“We are preparing a plan to win all 40 seats. The visit of the Home Minister is related to it. He will come from time to time and assess the situation,” Chaudhary said.

“We are organising an event to celebrate Emperor Ashoka’s birth anniversary in Sasaram. Amit Shah is coming here to participate in this event. We are expecting a large number of people to come to the event,” he said.

Chaudhary also slammed Chief Minster Nitish Kumar for taking credit for making a convention hall in the name of the Emperor in Patna.

“I want to say that the Emperor Ashoka Convention Hall was constructed due to the BJP. We have planned to construct a Samrat Ashok convention hall in every district headquarter but when Nitish Kumar separated from us, he changed the name. Whatever he said on Samrat Ashok was absolutely false,” he claimed.

Imran Khan hearing: Pak’s media watchdog imposes ban on live coverage of events at Islamabad court

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan’s electronic media watchdog on Saturday banned satellite television channels from broadcasting live coverage of events outside the Islamabad court where former prime minister Imran Khan is set to appear in a corruption case against him.

Khan, the 70-year-old chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, is scheduled to appear before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Zafar Iqbal to attend proceedings on the complaint filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for allegedly concealing details of gifts in his assets declarations.

In an advisory issued Saturday, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) stated that it has been observed with concern that satellite TV channels are showing live footage and images of a violent mob, and attacks on police and law enforcement agencies.

“Such footage/images were seen on TV screens without any editorial oversight during a recent standoff between political party workers and law enforcing agencies in Lahore wherein, a violent mob used petrol bombs, injuring armless policemen and blazing police vehicles. The live telecast of such footage on different satellite TV channels created chaos and panic among the viewers and Police.”

The Pemra letter said that such activism by the mob not only jeopardises the law and order situation but also makes public properties and lives vulnerable.

The airing of such content violates a judgment of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the media regulator said.

According to a statement, Pemra referred to the clashes between PTI workers and law enforcement personnel outside Khan’s Zaman Park residence, saying it had “observed with concern” that satellite TV channels were “showing live footages (sic) /images of a violent mob, attacks on police and law enforcing agencies”.

Pemra, in its order, said that it has prohibited live/recorded coverage of any kind of rally, public gathering, or procession by any party, organisation and individual for March 18, including from the judicial complex, Islamabad.

The regulator further said that the license will be suspended in case of non-compliance with the order.

Khan has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Since his ouster, Khan has been clamouring for immediate elections to oust what he termed an “imported government” led by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif has maintained that elections will be held later this year once the parliament completes its five-year tenure.

  • Barred from hosting Int’l events after Ukraine war, Russia proposes to host SCO Games with India

Barred from hosting Int’l events after Ukraine war, Russia proposes to host SCO Games with India

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a proposal which could put India in a tricky situation, Russia has offered to host the inaugural Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Games, despite a ban imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on its member nations to take part in sporting events in that country.

Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin, who is currently on an official visit to India, has put forward an initiative to hold the first SCO Games in his country, the Russian Sports Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We propose to consider Russia as a possible country to host the SCO Games in coordination with the SCO chair state for another calendar year,” Matytsin was quoted as saying in the Russian Sports Ministry statement.

“The activities of the association could be aimed at strengthening ties in the development of Olympic, non-Olympic, Paralympic and national sports; the association will promote sports activities among the SCO member states.”

The statement said Matytsin participated in a meeting with the heads of ministries and departments that oversee the development of physical culture and sports in the member states of the SCO, including representatives from Russia, India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

There could be far reaching consequences if the proposal is accepted by the member countries of the SCO as the IOC has last month asked the international spots federations and National Olympic Committees not to take take part in any event in Russia and Belarus following the Ukraine war.

The IOC is, however, planning to allow Russians and Belarusians to return to competition ahead of qualifying events for the 2024 Paris Olympics as neutral athletes without national symbols.

“With regard to the sanctions…unanimously re-affirmed and called for a reinforcement of the sanctions already in place: No international sports events being organised or supported by an IF or NOC in Russia or Belarus,” a statement of the IOC said on January 25 said after its Executive Board meeting.

“No flag, anthem, colours or any other identifications whatsoever of these countries being displayed at any sports event or meeting, including the entire venue.

“No Russian and Belarusian Government or State official should be invited to or accredited for any international sports event or meeting.”

In another statement issued on February 28, the IOC recommended international sports federations and sports event organisers not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions.

“…the IOC EB strongly urges International Sports Federations and organisers of sports events worldwide to do everything in their power to ensure that no athlete or sports official from Russia or Belarus be allowed to take part under the name of Russia or Belarus,” it said.

“Russian or Belarusian nationals, be it as individuals or teams, should be accepted only as neutral athletes or neutral teams. No national symbols, colours, flags or anthems should be displayed.”

The global body said it had arrived at the decision after consultation with IOC members, the entire network of athletes’ representatives, the international federations and the National Olympic Committees.

Russia’s proposal though contained no details of when the event could take place, or how large it would be.

Under the circumstances, taking part in an event in Russia could invite ban from the IOC. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was banned by the IOC for 14 months from December 2012 to February 2014, one of the reasons being government interference in its functioning.

The participation of India athletes in multi-sport events like the Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games is done through the IOA.

The top brass of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and sports ministry couldn’t be reached for a comment.

Most Olympic sports have excluded athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus since shortly after the start of Ukraine War.

Last month, 35 countries in a signed statement criticised the IOC for its plans to allow Russians and Belarusians to return to competition ahead of qualifying events for the 2024 Paris Olympics as neutral athletes without national symbols.

But, on the other hand, the Olympic Council of Asia in January invited Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the Asian Games scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8 and qualify for the 2024 Olympics, though the details and the modalities are yet to be worked out.

On Monday, Tajikistan Football Association also invited Russia to participate in the inaugural Central Asian Football Association Championships in June along with seven other national teams, including Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Iran.

Russian football teams have been barred from European and FIFA competitions since the invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

  • UP govt asks local admin to hold Navratri events, triggers criticism

UP govt asks local admin to hold Navratri events, triggers criticism

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has asked local administrations across the state to organise special religious events at temples during the nine-day Chaitra Navratri and Ram Navami festivals this month, triggering criticism from the opposition.

The state’s BJP government will make available Rs 1 lakh to each district to pay as honorarium to artists picked to perform at these events.

In an order dated March 10, state culture department’s principal secretary Mukesh Meshram said Chaitra Navratri has a special significance during which the nine “swaroops” of Goddess Durga are worshipped to end negative energy.

So organising religious and cultural events during this period is proposed, he said.

The order, which went out to all district magistrates and divisional commissioners, said organising committees should be set up in each block, tehsil and district. Suggestions for the events include recitation of Durga Saptashati and Akhand Ramayan at temples and shaktipeeths’.

The organisers are expected to upload pictures on the culture department website.

Public representatives should be invited and large public participation ensured, the order said.

The Chaitra Navratri begins on March 22 and Ram Navami will be celebrated on March 30.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav did not directly criticise the order, choosing instead to make a sarcastic comment.

“The proposal to give Rs 1 lakh to district magistrates of UP is welcome but what can Rs 1 lakh do? At least Rs 10 crore should be given so that festivals of all religions can be celebrated,” Yadav tweeted in Hindi.

He added that the BJP government should give free cooking gas cylinders on festivals, beginning this Ram Navami.

Yadav’s party colleague Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently kicked up a row by suggesting that portions of Ramcharitmanas should be deleted, took a dig at the government.

He said the government is now forced to conduct the recitation of Ramcharitmanas at its own expense as people have stopped doing it.

The SP legislator said promotion of a particular religion by a secular, democratic government is a violation of the Constitution. Giving money from government funds to “promote all religions equally” would be welcome, he added.

Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said, “It’s good to organise religious events but what about the issues on which people voted for the BJP.”

Awasthi asked where are the jobs promised by the party, and said no day passes without news of atrocities on Brahmins and Dalits in UP.

“The BJP has failed on issues and promises that were made to the people of the state,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya dismissed the opposition criticism.

“If any religious event related to Lord Shri Ram and Ramcharitmanas is being organised, it should be welcomed. There should be no questions or answers on it. All I want to say is Jai Shri Ram and Jai Mata Di.”

Principal Secretary Meshram said there was nothing new in the order.

“Such programmes have been held earlier too and this is not the first time they are being held in the state. Holding these programmes will provide a platform to the artistes at the local level to showcase their talent,” he told PTI.

The official has asked the local administrations to organise Durga Saptashati, Devi Gaan and Devi Jagran at temples and ‘shaktipeeths’ under a special drive to ensure participation of women and girls.

On Ashtami and Ram Navami (March 29 and 30), Akhand Ramayan paath should be organised at major temples and ‘shaktipeeths’ to spread human, social and national values, the order said.

Two nodal officers have been appointed at the state level for coordination. A committee headed by the district magistrate in each district will select artistes for the events, the order said.

The government has asked local administrations to upload photographs of these events on the website of the culture department.

All preparations should be made by March 21, by which time GPS locations, photographs of the temples and the contact details of the temple management bodies should be shared with the department, the order said.

  • Oppn unity on test as Kavitha, Sibal to hold separate events in Delhi

Oppn unity on test as Kavitha, Sibal to hold separate events in Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Opposition unity will be on test on Friday and Saturday when two back to back events are being organised — one by the Telangana CM’s daughter K Kavitha for pressing the demand for women’s reservation and the other on Saturday by Independent MP Kapil Sibal for the launch of ‘Insaf Ke Sipahi’.

Kavitha had praised Sonia Gandhi but had hit out at the Congress alleging arrogance on the issue of an opposition alliance. Sibal will be launching the website ‘Insaaf’. “On 11th of Mar Pls join me at Jantar Mantar at 3.30 PM where I will unveil a new vision for India for the future different from the one we live in today,” he said in a tweet.

Sibal has got support from former J&K chief minister Farooq Abdullah and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

“This is an important initiative of Kapil Sibal Saheb. I appeal to everyone to join this initiative and we all together will fight against injustice,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president and former CM Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday extended support to senior political leader and legal luminary Kapil Sibal’s newly announced platform ‘Insaaf ke Sipahi’ to fight injustice.

According to a statement, Abdullah said, “Sibal sahab is a veteran leader and a seasoned lawyer, considered an important voice of the Opposition, and his talk of bringing opposition parties and leaders together should be welcomed. There is nothing better than everyone uniting against injustices.”

He added, “National Conference firmly stands with Kapil Sibal sahab in his new initiative. The party rank and file, including Omar Abdullah, is of the firm belief that the initiative will act as a catalyst in bringing the opposition parties together for a common cause of fighting injustices.”

Kavitha a day ahead of the hunger strike praised Sonia Gandhi for pushing the Women Reservation Bill during the UPA’s tenure.

She has invited 18 political parties, including the Congress to join the one-day hunger strike to press the demand. She said around 6,000 people will be present and her organisation Bharat Jagruti Manch has reached out to the like-minded parties and organisations.

“I salute Madam Sonia Gandhi for having backed the Women’s reservation Bill despite leading a coalition govt at Centre,” she said.

Kavitha said she has spoken to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary K.C. Venugopal to send a representative to the protest.

Sibal on Saturday had announced that he will launch a website, titled ‘Insaf ke Sipahi’, to help citizens fight against injustice and appealed to the opposition Chief Ministers and parties to help him in the initiative.

Addressing a press conference, Sibal had said during the official launch on March 11 at the Jantar Mantar, that he will also unveil a vision document for the country. He asserted that this was not a political move but a catalyst for change.

The Independent MP said lawyers should raise their voices, adding that “I want to start a movement as there is injustice everywhere be it business, journalism, people and opposition.”

Sibal had alleged that the elected governments had been destabilised and that among 121 cases of the ED, 115 are against the opposition leaders.
