Mumbai: Queer student claims not allowed at event over ‘inappropriate’ dress in TISS

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The students’ union president of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) who has chosen to be identified as queer has claimed discrimination at an event on the campus over “inappropriate” dress.

A TISS professor here said the institute is known for its inclusive nature and they will look into the matter if there has been any incidence where any student was made to feel discriminated against.

The alleged incident took place on March 25, when a speech was organised on “Ambedkar Nationalism, And the Need for Contemporary Collaborative Activitism”.

In a social media post, TISS students’ union president Pratik Permey said, “I was invited to the Ambedkar Memorial Lecture as a representative of the students’ union, to welcome the guests and do some formalities. When I reached the venue, around 6 pm I showed up in the usual dress. It was a blouse and a skirt.”

Around 7, Permey claimed, a professor and a few members of the organising committee said “for an event like this, you cannot wear something like that”.

Even if the institute wants to curb what students wear, it is not fine, said Permey. “Apart from being an indigenous and tribal person, I am also a queer. I also felt that my queerness was not allowed to represent or rather I was not allowed to because of my queerness,” Permey said.

The student union leader added, “I really felt violated and humiliated. My right and my freedom were curbed. I was not allowed to represent.”

A TISS professor said theirs is perhaps the only institution in the country with a gender-neutral hostel. TISS is known for its inclusive nature with all supportive mechanisms in place for students of all genders and identities to co-exist, said the professor.

“If there has been any incidence where any student feels discriminated, we will look into the matter. All students are assured of an inclusive atmosphere on the campus,” said the professor.

Hyderabad: Middle finger shown to protesting students at right-wing event in UoH

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Mild tension prevailed in the University of Hyderabad (UOH) when a programme was allowed to be held by right-wing think tank Pragna Bharati in the campus. After got students got to know of it, many of them were prevented from entering the event. The situation got more tense after a man, alleged to be an RSS member, showed protesting students a middle-finger while walking in.

At the event in UoH, known speakers such as right-wing ideologue Rajiv Malhotra and BJP Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy attended the event. Malhotra is most infamous on social media for featuring in a video with rape-accused Swami Ntiyananda, and discussing about a bizarre idea of how to get money from the billionaires in world to deliver it to them in the next life.

During the program organised by Pragna Bharati on Monday, several students were prevented from entering the talk. Students claims that only people who are affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were let in. Many who were unhappy with the presence of the right-wing speakers in UoH turned up to protest at the event.

Over the last few years the University of Hyderabad administration has also prevented various speakers from entering the campus to speak with the students (like Yogendra Yadav).

Pragna Bharati organised an interactive session with Rajiv Malhotra, Subramanian Swamy and Vijaya Viswanathan on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Zakir Hussain lecture hall.

Among vidoes shot during the protest in UoH, one of those shows a man in kurta who was being escorted into the lecture hall. In that video, he responded to the sloganeering students by whistling at them and pointing his middle finger towards them.

“We were stopped from attending the session under the pretext that we did not register for the program. We only came because we wanted to listen to the speakers and interact with them,” said Kripa, the general secretary of the student union while speaking to Siasat.com.

She said a complaint against the man was given to the Gachibowli police and the University of Hyderabad administration also. In another video the police and UoH security were seen pulling the students away and preventing them from entering the hall.

The program organisers from Pragna Bharati said that they did not invite him to the sessions and that they had no clue about the incident until the police had informed them later. Speaking to Siasat.com, One of the organisers from Pragya Bharati, who identified himself as Sharmaji, called the students “anti-nationals”.

Various university students shared the video of the incident on social media, accusing RSS and ABVP of bringing the man (who showed the middle finger) into the university.

  • CJI skips SCBA’s Holi event after spat with Bar body chief

CJI skips SCBA’s Holi event after spat with Bar body chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Friday skipped the ‘Holi Milan’ event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) where he was to be present the chief guest.

On Thursday, a heated exchange of words was witnessed between the CJI and SCBA president Vikas Singh during the hearing of a matter related to allotment of land at Appu Ghar’ for lawyers’ chambers. The CJI had to direct the senior lawyer not to raise his voice and leave the court.

The SCBA had organised a poetry recital on Friday where the CJI was invited as the chief guest. Eminent poets like Ashok Chakradhar and Shambhu Shikhar recited their poems at the event.

During the mentioning of cases, the SCBA president told a bench of the CJI and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala that he was struggling to get the matter listed for the last six months.

“The Appu Ghar land came to the Supreme Court on a petition by the SCBA and the Bar was given only one block with reluctance. The construction on the land was to begin during ex-CJI N V Ramana’s tenure. For the last six months, we are struggling to get the matter listed. Treat me like an ordinary litigant,” Singh said.

“You can’t demand land like this. You tell us the day we are sitting idle for the whole day,” Justice Chandrachud responded sharply.

To this, Singh replied, “I am not saying that you are sitting idle for the whole day. I am only trying to get the matter listed. If it is not done, I will have to escalate and take it to your lordships’ residence. I don’t want the Bar to be taken like this.”

    Singh’s remarks got Chandrachud’s goat.

“Don’t threaten the chief justice. Is this a way to behave? Please sit down. It will not be listed like this. Please leave my court. I will not list like this. I will not be cowered down by you.

“Mr Vikas Singh, please don’t raise your voice. As a president, you should be mentor and leader to the Bar. I am sorry, you are reducing the level of dialogue. You have filed an Article 32 petition, claiming that the land allotted to the Supreme Court should be handed over to the Bar for construction of chambers. We will deal with the matter when it comes. Please don’t try and twist our arm to give you the relief you want,” the CJI said.

The CJI said he had already announced his decision and the matter will be taken up on March 17th. It will, however, not be the first on board, he added.

The SCBA president said, “If my lords want to dismiss it, please do it. But don’t do that it is not listed.”

The CJI replied, “I have announced my verdict. It’s on March 17 and it will not be listed at serial number 1, Mr Singh.”

The senior lawyer refused to relent and said the Bar has always supported the court.

“I never want to be unreasonable but I am forced to do so in this case,” he said.

Chandrachud then told Singh, “I am the chief justice. I have been here since March 29, 2000. I have been in this profession for 22 years. I have never allowed myself to be browbeaten by a member of the Bar, litigant or anyone else. I will not do that in the final two years of my career.”

Refusing to keep quiet, Singh said, “This is not the attitude. If the Bar is cooperating with the court, it doesn’t mean it should be taken for a ride. That is something which I feel very strongly. I want to make this very clear.”

“Please sort your agenda outside the courtroom,” Chandrachud said curtly and called the next matter.
