New York: An Indian-American tax return preparer faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison after pleading guilty to evading assessment of his personal federal income taxes.

Samir Patel of Statesboro, Georgia, was a tax return preparer at a national return preparation business from 1999 to 2021, according to court documents.

In 2015, he purchased a franchise of the business in Claxton, and as its owner, he hired, trained and supervised tax preparers, and continued to prepare returns for customers.

He, however, willfully filed false income tax returns that underreported his income and evaded proper assessment of his personal taxes for years 2015, 2016, and 2017, a Department of Justice release stated.

He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, as well as a period of supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties.

The District Court Chief Judge J Randal Hall for the Southern District of Georgia will determine any sentence after considering the US Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

After carrying out a ‘survey’ at the premises of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) offices in Delhi and Mumbai for the second day in a row today, the the income tax department on Thursday announced a BBC Documentary on its tax evasion.

Manipulation of prices for unauthorised benefits including tax advantages are serious crimes and the BBC India is found to be a repeat offender, and this deserves a documentary” told Income Tax department to The Fauxy.

PM Narendra Modi will launch the BBC Documentary on Namo TV and Doordarshan. The documentary will also be shown on theatres and all the BJP ruled states are likely to make the documentary tax free.

Reportedly, BBC has reached UK court to ban airing of the documentary on BBC tax evasion, calling it fake, misleading and a vendetta.

Upset with the BBC for not being able to spread Modi documentary to the masses and polarise the situation ahead of general election, BJP has supported the raid. “They had just one job” said a BJP leader.

Sources suggest that Donald Trump has offered to mediate between BJP and BBC. Details awaited.

The Treasury announced sanctions on Wednesday against 22 people it says have helped Russia obtain weapons and evade sanctions imposed on the Kremlin and its allies since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago.

The sanctions target the network’s leader, Russian arms dealer Igor Zimenkov, as well as his son and several members of their network, for supplying Russia with “high-technology devices.” Zimenkov and his associates have “been involved in multiple deals for Russian cybersecurity and helicopter sales” and maintain close relationships with the Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport, according to the Treasury.

“Russia’s desperate attempts to utilize proxies to circumvent U.S. sanctions demonstrate that sanctions have made it much harder and costlier for Russia’s military-industrial complex to re-supply Putin’s war machine,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in a statement. “Targeting proxies is one of many steps that Treasury and our coalition of partners have taken, and continue to take, to tighten sanctions enforcement against Russia’s defense sector, its benefactors, and its supporters.”
