“Disney sued us, we have no choice now but to respond,” he said. “The district will seek justice in state court here in central Florida where both it and Disney reside and do business.”

The lawsuit is expected to be filed later Monday.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The ongoing fight between Disney and DeSantis over control of its Florida-based theme parks pits the California-based entertainment giant against a powerful governor who is expected to run for president. DeSantis has touted his battle with Disney as a fight against “woke” companies but in recent weeks has faced growing criticism from Republicans for continuing the clash.

Most recently, Speaker Kevin McCarthy said last week that the governor should “sit down and negotiate” with the company while GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy on Sunday said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that DeSantis “really lost it here. He’s gone on the wrong path.”

The fight has also provided fuel for Democrats as they seek to attack DeSantis. President Joe Biden, during Saturday’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner, joked: “I had a lot of Ron DeSantis jokes ready, but Mickey Mouse beat the hell out of me and got to them first.”

But it’s not just national figures who are criticizing DeSantis. During Monday’s board meeting in central Florida, a local resident, Douglas Dixon, told board members that he supported DeSantis until he started the “stupid war.”

“You guys are terrible and I honestly think you should resign,” Dixon said.

The yearlong fight started last year after Florida Republicans passed legislation that DeSantis signed into law, banning teachers from leading classroom lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation for students in kindergarten through third grade.

Disney’s former CEO, Bob Chapek, denounced the law and in response, DeSantis last year pushed the GOP-controlled Legislature to strip Disney of its self-governing status that the company has enjoyed for decades. Disney remains on of Florida’s biggest employers and has more than 70,000 employees in the state.

Through legislative moves, DeSantis appointed a new board to oversee Disney’s central Florida theme park. But Disney last February quietly signed a pact with the previous board that gave the company more authority.

The governor’s administration only learned of the new pact in March and later sought to invalidate the previous pact.

Hungarian PM calls for peace in Russia-Ukraine conflict, warns of escalation

    [ad_1]

Budapest: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and warned of the escalation of the conflict here.

Giving his annual state of the nation address, Orban said that the conflict could last for years, and everyone in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) is “on the side of the war, except for Hungary”.

In his televised speech, Orban explained that the EU was already at war with Russia, albeit indirectly, because they were sending weapons and training military personnel, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Europe is on the verge of drifting into war, they are walking on a very thin platform,” he said.

The Hungarian PM promised that even if it becomes increasingly hard, Hungary would stick to its position, and continue to maintain economic relations with Russia.

According to Orban, the Hungarian position was only an exception within Europe, but was in fact “quite common in the rest of the world.”

He said that the European population would get tired of the price they have to pay for the sanctions and new governments to be elected would be closer to the Hungarian position.

Because of the “war and high inflation”, Orban called 2022 the most difficult year for Hungary since 1990. He promised that “inflation will return to the single digits”.

“We will stay out of the war, Hungary will remain an island of peace and security, and we will also break inflation, this is the government’s job, there will be no mistakes in it,” he noted.

Israel fully responsible for deadly escalation: Palestine

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: Palestine has blamed Israel for the current “serious” tension in the West Bank and Jerusalem, which has left dozens of people dead this month.

“We hold the Israeli government fully responsible for the dangerous escalation that the situation has reached due to its crimes of killing, its continuation of settlement, the annexation of land, and the demolition of homes,” said a statement released by the Palestinian leadership after President Mahmoud Abbas held a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

“These policies are a result of the Israeli occupation government’s evasion of its commitment to implement the signed peace agreements and its violation of international resolutions,” Xinhua News Agency reported quoting the statement.

The Palestinian leadership warned of further deterioration that could threaten security and stability in the entire region.

A gunman opened fire on people near a synagogue at a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem on Friday, killing at least seven people and wounding three others, one day after the Israeli forces raided the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank and killed nine Palestinians and wounded 16 others.

At least 30 Palestinians and eight Israelis have been killed so far this year. In 2022, more than 150 Palestinians and over 20 Israelis were killed in clashes between the two sides, the highest number of deaths in years, according to the United Nations.

Palestinian factions, most notably Hamas and Islamic Jihad, vowed to respond to the escalation. The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday the end of decades-long security coordination with Israel.
