Bengalis are emotional not rational, on some issues

    Justice Katju

Are Tagore and ‘Netaji’ holy cows and private property of Bengalis ? Is no one permitted to raise any questions about ‘Gurudeb’ and ‘Netaji’ ?

    https://www.hastakshepnews.com/are-tagore-and-bose-the-private-property-of-bengalis/

I regard Tagore as objectively a British agent, and Subhas Chandra Bose as a Japanese agent.

    https://www.andhrawishesh.com/378-telugu-headlines-top-stories/52102-bose-a-japanese-agent-and-tagore-a-british-stooge-katju.html

One evening at Allahabad when I was a Judge there ( 1991-2004 ) I was at the house of one of the High Court Judges who had invited some judges for dinner.
There I mentioned my view that Subhas Chandra Bose was a Japanese agent.

    http://justicekatju.blogspot.com/2016/01/bengalis-and-bose-i-hold-bengalis-in.html

At this, one of the High Court Judges, who was a Bengali, reacted almost hysterically, and started shouting at me, and threatening to walk out. I was taken aback, and had to apologise, as I did not want the party to be broken up.

But I have witnessed a somewhat similar reaction by many ( not all ) Bengalis if one speaks against Tagore. It is sometimes impossible to talk rationally with many Bengalis about ‘Netaji’ and Tagore.

Are Subhas Chandra Bose and Tagore the private property of Bengalis ? Can no one criticize them in the presence of Bengalis ? If Bengalis regard them as public figures, not the private property of Bengalis, then the public surely has the right to assess and criticize them.

I have expressed my views about Bose and Tagore on my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in and I do not intend to repeat them in detail.

    https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/now-katju-calls-bose-japanese-agent-tagore-british-stooge/articleshow/48963085.cms

I regard Tagore as a British stooge who was promoted by Yeats ( who got him a Nobel Prize ), and used by the British to divert literature from the revolutionary direction Sharad Chandra Chattopadhyaya and Kazi Nazrul Islam were taking it ( see Sharad Chandra’s novel ‘ Pather Dabi’, which was banned by the British. At one time the price of one copy was the same as that of a Mauser pistol ).

See in this connection my article ‘ The Role of Art and Literature ‘ on my blog.

I have explained there that there are broadly two theories of art and literature, one is called ‘Art for art’s sake’, and the other is called ‘ Art for social purpose ‘. In a poor country like India only the second theory is acceptable.

Tagore belonged broadly to the school of ‘ Art for Art’s sake’, propagating spiritualism and mystical nonsense ( see his poems ‘Gitanjali’, ‘Agni beena bajao tumi kemon kore’, ‘Klanti’, etc ), while Sharad Chandra and Kazi Nazrul Islam belonged to the school of ‘ Art for social purpose’.

The British were scared of the writings of Sharad Chandra, as they could inspire an anti-British Indian freedom struggle, and so they promoted their stooge Tagore who diverted Bengali literature to a harmless, spiritual direction.
Am I not entitled to even present my view about Tagore before Bengalis ? Do I not have freedom of expression ?

As regard Bose, I regard him as a Japanese agent, otherwise why did he give up the struggle against the British in 1945 when the Japanese surrendered ? If he was a real freedom fighter he should have carried on a guerilla war against the British, as the Chinese had done against the Japanese. In a guerilla war one fights with the weapons of the enemy, by snatching them from the enemy.

As a young man, Bose was no doubt full of patriotism, because of which he resigned from the ICS and joined the freedom struggle. However, it seems later in life he became ambitious. After Gandhi forced him to resign from Presidentship of the Congress in 1939, he became frustrated, and at first went to Nazi Germany where he hobnobbed with Hitler and Himmler, two of the most evil men in world history, seeking their help to fight the British. When that scheme did not work out, he went to Japan, whose rulers helped him raise the INA.

In fact Bose was only being used by the Japanese Imperialists, who would have bumped him off once his utility was over, or made him a puppet ruler of India, like Pu Yi, who was a puppet ruler of Manchukuo.

    https://www.britannica.com/biography/Puyi

Would the Japanese fascists have given freedom to India if they had defeated the British ? Not at all, they were fascist imperialists, seeking markets and raw materials, and if they had conquered India would have looted it, and slaughtered a lot of Indians, the way they looted Manchuria and North China under their occupation, and slaughtered tens of thousands of Chinese in Nanking, Shanghai, etc. ( see on Youtube about these massacres ).

Many Bengalis and others support Bose, as they believe he was right since an enemy’s enemy was one’s friend. They forget this dictum cannot be of universal application. Making an alliance with India’s enemy’s enemy i.e. Japan, would have been good if it would have benefited us. But as I have pointed out above, if Japan had conquered India they would not have given us freedom, but would have made India their colony, and looted us, perhaps much more ruthlessly than the British ( since they were fascists ).

I have great respect for Bengalis, many of whom are my close friends. I would only request them to react rationally and ponder about what I have said, instead of reacting emotionally, treating Bose and Tagore like holy cows

  • ‘He was so emotional’: the inside story of Ed Sheeran’s new album – and his US copyright trial

‘He was so emotional’: the inside story of Ed Sheeran’s new album – and his US copyright trial

    [ad_1]

For Ed Sheeran, the release of a new album usually means a confident sweep to No 1 and steady dominance of the Top 40 over the subsequent months. But there is more at stake than usual for the 32-year-old songwriter when he releases his fifth album, – (Subtract), next Friday (5 May).

The record documents a series of events last spring that Sheeran has characterised as the most challenging period in his life. His wife, Cherry Seaborn, was diagnosed with a tumour that couldn’t be operated on until after the birth of their second child. His best friend, music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards, died aged 31 after taking cocaine. Sheeran was also subject to a high-profile UK court case in which he faced claims he had copied a pair of songwriters’ work in his 2017 smash hit single Shape of You.

Sheeran won the case – but this week finds himself in US court defending the claim that his 2014 single Thinking Out Loud infringes on the copyright of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 hit Let’s Get It On, the verdict of which may arrive on Subtract’s release date. The lawsuit is being brought by the heirs of Gaye’s co-writer on Let’s Get It On, Ed Townsend, and alleges that Sheeran and co-writer Amy Wadge copied an ascending four-chord sequence, and its rhythm.

His previous victory doesn’t guarantee success, said entertainment lawyer Gregor Pryor. “In the UK, Sheeran could probably trust the judicial process a bit more. In the US, with trial by jury – that is harder.” In a string of recent pop copyright cases, including the likes of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, Sheeran is “one of the highest-profile targets, so it’s got a whiff of the US celebrity lawsuit about it”.

He may also be harmed by what the prosecution has called a “smoking gun” – a live clip of Sheeran segueing from his song into Gaye’s. “It’s very unfortunate,” said Pryor. “You could argue that it illustrates his case that many songs are written on the same chord progressions, but I don’t think it helps.”

Adding to the pressure on Sheeran this week is the question of whether fans of a pop everyman who has built his career on relatability will engage with a deeply personal record that pivots from his usual spread-betting genre fare to focus on a single, melancholy sound.

The lead single from Subtract, Eyes Closed – the album’s poppiest outlier – charted at No 1 at the end of March, ending Miley Cyrus’s 10-week reign at No 1 with Flowers, propelled by a signed CD single that retailed for 99p. Its second single, however, the subdued Boat, was at 38 in this week’s midweek charts.

Subtract is the final album of Sheeran’s mathematical symbols series, following + (2011), x (2014), ÷ (2017) and = (2021). He made the album with Aaron Dessner of US indie band the National – best known to pop fans as the co-producer of Taylor Swift’s two lockdown albums, Folklore and Evermore. Sheeran and Swift are old friends: when she asked Dessner to work on the re-recording of her 2012 album Red, which features two duets with Sheeran, she encouraged them to work together.

‘Struggling emotionally with some really serious headwinds of loss’ … Sheeran in a press shot for Subtract.

For Dessner, the potential of the collaboration lay in bringing out “the vulnerability and emotion in [Sheeran] to make music that would not normally be his inclination”, he said. Initially, Sheeran wanted to sideline his trademark guitar; Dessner convinced him to make a “really naked, avant garde but still guitar-oriented record”, and began sending him musical sketches to write to remotely.

Sheeran is known for a playing style in which he uses the body of his acoustic guitar as a percussive instrument. “His right hand is like a drum machine,” said Dessner. While he still wanted the songs to have rhythm, “I didn’t feel the need to try to make pop music.” Once Sheeran started responding to the sketches, songs came thick and fast. “One day, he sent me 14 ideas in response to a track,” said Dessner.

When they met on the Kent coast to record late last spring, they wrote 32 songs in a week, 14 of which feature on Subtract. “It was a vulnerable time,” said Dessner. Edwards died in the middle of the sessions, and Sheeran “was struggling emotionally with some really serious headwinds of loss”. He would ask Dessner if the lyrics were too heavy, detailing grief; how the birth of his first daughter prompted him to kick a “bad vibes” drug habit; sitting in the doctor’s waiting room with Seaborn – who underwent successful surgery – and asking whether this pain signifies “the end of youth”.

“There were times when he tracked vocals that were almost unusable because he was so emotional,” said Dessner. “There’s this raw, visceral beauty to a lot of it.”

During the Shape of You trial, Sheeran said the allegations had prompted him to start filming every recording session to avoid similar situations. There were documentarians in Kent, said Dessner, for creative security and to capture footage for a four-part Disney+ documentary launching on 3 May.

But filming sessions “can’t protect [Sheeran] against everything”, said Pryor. “It’s advisable. It clearly shows, ‘I wasn’t listening to Marvin Gaye and then I came up with this’, but it doesn’t irrefutably prove that he hasn’t heard the Gaye song and not copied it.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Subtract has a misty, limpid sound, charged with distortion and glimmering electronic touches. The Kent coastline influenced Sheeran’s songwriting, said Dessner, with songs on Subtract referencing salt water, deep blues and natural imagery. “The waves won’t break my boat,” Sheeran sings on Boat, the fragile opening song.

    Ed Sheeran: Boat – video

Dessner recorded Sheeran’s voice through old tube microphones, creating a different, more vulnerable effect from his biggest hits. He singled out the song Borderline. “He sings in this very high, virtuosic voice – the only other person I think is capable of that would be Justin Vernon [AKA Bon Iver]. It was really moving, like [it’s] hanging out over a cliff. Rather than support it by building immaculate pop arrangements around it, I went in a totally different direction, supporting his voice harmonically without trying to fill every space with instant gratification.”

The effect is not a million miles from one of Sheeran’s formative influences, Damien Rice’s 2002 album O, nor, indeed, the National.

Sheeran is a commercial darling – the most listened-to artist in the UK in 2021, and second only to Harry Styles last year – but rarely a critical one. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, he balked at the idea that snobby indie fans might like this album because of Dessner’s presence. “Someone who’s never liked my music ever? And sees me as the punchline to a joke? For him to suddenly be like, ‘Oh, you’re not as shit as I thought you were?’ That doesn’t mean anything,” he said.

Dessner said he didn’t care about the potential cultural implications of their collaboration. “He’s made giant pop records that are easy to criticise, but on a human and artistic level, he’s so gifted and lovely. It couldn’t have been more natural, fun and rewarding to feel him jumping off the cliff with me. Over time, I’ve tired of the ‘what’s cool?’ debate.” The pair would continue to work together, Dessner said, and have made more than 30 new songs since Kent. “I’m even more excited about those – I feel we’re getting better.”

For Guardian music critic Alexis Petridis, the collaboration “doesn’t strike me as necessitating a huge leap of faith on the part of the public. Sheeran is an acoustic singer-songwriter, it’s not like he’s been making techno.” What would be interesting, he said, is learning the depth of fans’ investment in a famously relatable musician, who even in superstardom has written songs about the joys of cheap takeaways and is married to his childhood sweetheart. “Do you actually buy into the person, or just the person as a cipher for a normal, nice bloke?”

Adele joins James Corden for emotional Carpool Karaoke finale

    [ad_1]

Adele broke down in tears while discussing her divorce as she joined James Corden for the final Carpool Karaoke in his last week as host of the The Late Late Show on the US network CBS.

Corden took over The Late Late Show in 2015, replacing the Scottish-American comedian Craig Ferguson. He announced last year that he would be leaving the show and returning to the UK, with Corden’s last episode airing on Thursday.

The Carpool Karaoke part of the show quickly became its breakout hit, and Corden’s first segment with Adele became a viral hit, amassing more than 260m views.

In the final Carpool Karaoke episode, released on Monday, the singer became visibly emotional over Corden’s decision to return to the UK.

“It’s been a crazy eight years,” said Corden. “In one sense it feels like it’s gone like that [clicks fingers] and in another I feel like I don’t remember what life was like before being here.”

Adele said: “I’ve never lived in LA without you guys so I’m a bit nervous about it, to be honest with you, and very, very sad.”

During their conversation, Corden revealed some of the difficulties he had faced in persuading celebrities to take part in Carpool Karaoke when he first came to the US.

He recalled how the team eventually managed to persuade Mariah Carey to agree, but that before she got in the car she told him she would only “do the chat” and would not sing.

Corden knew he had to convince her to change her mind to make a success of the feature, and he succeeded.

“There’s been some bloody brilliant ones, and a few [bleeped out] ones,” Adele laughed, asking Corden to name a favourite.

“Stevie Wonder changed it a lot,” he replied, “because when he did it, other artists were like, ‘Well, if Stevie Wonder’s done it, I’ll do it.’”

Adele revealed how Corden and his family had been “so integral in looking after” her and her son following her split from her former husband, Simon Konecki, in 2019.

The couple divorced in March 2021, and Adele revealed that she and her son Angelo, 10, had gone on a family trip with Corden, his wife, Julia Carey, and their three children.

“And we were on our way home and my mood had changed,” Adele said. “It was like the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable, for just being an adult, whereas the year before that where I left Simon, you and Jules and the kids were so integral in looking after me and Angelo.”

“You were like an adult with me. You and Julia would always give me this advice.”

Adele’s Carpool Karaoke segment will also be broadcast on Thursday’s show, bookending a series that has also featured Elton John, Madonna, BTS, Blackpink, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney, Céline Dion, and Billie Eilish.

‘Amul-Nandini made an emotional issue for Karnataka polls’: Sitharaman

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday alleged that Amul-Nandini had been made an emotional issue in Karnataka in view of Assembly elections scheduled next month.

She said that “things were tweaked, twisted and made an emotional issue because it is election time in Karnataka”.

Assembly elections in Karnataka are scheduled to be held on May 10.

    MS Education Academy

The Union Minister said that to suddenly say that Amul is being brought to Karnataka to kill Nandini is ‘brazen’.

She alleged that the Anand Milk Union Limited (Amul), the Gujarat-based dairy cooperative, had entered Karnataka when the Congress was in power.

“Amul entered Karnataka when there was a Congress-led government here. I’m not sure if I should name the Chief Minister of that time. The same respected former CM is now questioning Amul’s entry. It was in his time Amul entered North Karnataka for marketing in those areas,” she said.

The Finance Minister was responding to a question regarding the Amul-Nandini controversy, during the interaction with Thinkers Forum, Karnataka here.

Amul-Nandini has become a key issue ahead of the elections, as the opposition Congress and JD-S have alleged that the ruling BJP is trying to finish off Nandini by merging it with Amul.

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) sells milk, curd and other dairy products under the brand name Nandini.

“This, strictly speaking, is tweaked, twisted and made an emotional issue because it is election time. Instead of building a healthy competition and a positive narrative, the issue was twisted,” she said.

“In India’s scheme of things, every state has its own milk cooperative. Karnataka’s Nandini… whoever doesn’t recognise it? Even now as I’ve come, I had Nandini milk, curd, peda. Of course in Delhi, I’ll buy Amul,” Sitharaman said.

“I represent Karnataka (but) in Delhi, if Nandini isn’t available, I’m mentally not a sanyasi to say I won’t drink milk if Nandini isn’t available. I still buy Amul. That’s not being against Karnataka,” she added.

She pointed out Nandini too sells its products in other states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh just like other state dairies’ products are also available in Karnataka.

“Good competition I would say. The idea is therefore to strengthen India in every aspect. That’s why India became the world’s largest milk producer,” she said.

She clarified that strengthening Nandini and dairy farmers in Karnataka would continue to happen.

She observed that farmers and women need not be brought into a political issue.

Stating that Karnataka’s milk farmers need to be supported, Sitharaman claimed that it was the BJP government headed by B.S. Yediyurappa which raised the procurement price of milk for the first time.

“Again, the current BJP government increased it to Rs 5. So, support to milk-giving farmers will continue,” she said.

KCR’s letter to BRS cadre emotional blackmail: Telangana BJP chief

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday called Telangana chief minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) supremo K Chandrashekar Rao’s letter to his party cadre “emotional blackmail of party workers”.

Bandi Sanjay said that the people of Telangana have “learnt that the KTR family members are behind many scandals like the Kaleshwaram scam, the death of intermediate students, the IT scam Dharani scam, and the real estate mafia”. He released his version of a letter after KCR wrote one to BRS party workers calling for support

“Scared that all of these scams are going to be revealed soon, KCR wrote the letter emotionally blackmailing his own party workers from turning against his family. This is a conspiracy to incite the opposition,” the BJP Telangana chief alleged.

“The letter is an example of the loss of people, party leaders and workers’ trust in the leadership of the BRS party and the Kalvakuntla family. A big conspiracy is hidden behind this move of KCR, who never cares about the activists, writing a letter today,” said Bandi Sanjay in his reply.

The BJP leader alleged that KCR directs police “to wave batons and beat up people” who come to Pragati Bhavan to raise their issues. He said that the chief minister has confined himself to the farmhouse and continued to rule.

Bandi Sanjay continued, “KCR has written this letter to incite the emotions of the party activist to prevent the discussion of his family’s corruption, as his ‘paper leak’ son, and ‘liquor scam’ daughter are drowning in many scams. KCR has a history of throwing out activists and leaders who questioned his selfish usage of Telangana. God knows what happened to the common people in 9 years”.

The BJP president called on people to support the BJP for the realisation of the aspirations of the Telangana movement. “If BJP comes to power we will announce a job calendar like the UPSC every year. We will build houses for the poor, and provide loss compensation to the farmers who lost crops. We will provide free education and healthcare,” added the BJP chief.
