Energy | Has the electricity price base been seen? The cheapest fixed-term contract costs a good 11 cents

The contract, valid for the time being, now costs just over 12 cents per kilowatt hour at its lowest.
Long the continued decrease in the price of fixed-term electricity contracts seems to have stopped. According to the Energy Agency’s price comparison of contracts, the cheapest fixed-price fixed-term contract sells electricity for 11.19 cents per kilowatt hour.
The cheapest contract offer was also the same a week ago. The contract is sold by Vihreë älläenergia. It is biennial.
Fixed-term electricity contracts have become cheaper for practically two months straight. For example, as recently as December 12, the cheapest contract traded electricity for 29 cents. Since then, the price per kilowatt hour has dropped by almost 18 cents.
Based on the electricity derivatives market, it seems that electricity contracts will not necessarily get cheaper in the near future.
Finland’s electricity futures are rather on a fine rise. Now electricity costs 10.4 cents per kilowatt-hour in the April-June futures trade in the Finnish region. The price includes 24 percent value added tax. A week ago, the price was 10.1 cents.
The electricity future for July–September now costs 9.4 cents, while a week ago the price was 8.9 cents.
For now The cheapest offer of the current contracts is currently 12.23 cents per kilowatt hour. The price in question is valid until the end of March.

The contract is sold by Vihreë älläenergia. After this, the price of the contract is determined based on the Finnish price of the electricity exchange. A margin of 3.56 cents is added to the monthly average price. The consumer can terminate the contract with a notice period of two weeks.
On the website of the Energy Agency, you can also find another offer valid until further notice, where the energy fee is less than 13 cents per kilowatt hour. The seller of the contract is Pohjois Karjalan Sähkö.
In the contract, the seller can change the price after one month after notifying the customer. The consumer can terminate the contract with a notice period of two weeks.
Exchange electricity the price has remained quite flat in recent weeks. During the last week, electricity has cost an average of 14.4 cents a day at its highest and just under 5 cents at its lowest.
In February, stock exchange electricity cost an average of 8.8 cents per kilowatt hour. Exchange electricity has been cheaper at the beginning of the year than last year’s January-February average.

Capacity of power generation, distribution increases, J&K will soon get 24*7 electricity: LG

Srinagar, Feb 27: Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha on Monday said that with the implementation of various central government schemes, Jammu and Kashmir will soon achieve its target of ensuring round-the-clock electricity.
Talking to the reporters here, Sinha, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that the power generation, distribution and transmission capacity has been increased in the past three years.
“We have increased 56 per cent capacity of distribution and generation in the three years compared to what we had in the past 70 years,” he said, adding that with the Rs 152 crore project in Kashmir, the capacity of power distribution will be increased further.
“At present, Rs 5000 crore wiorth central government schemes are there to strengthen the distribution grid in J&K. With the support of NTPC, REC, others including the installation of smart meters, J&K will soon achieve its target of 24*7 electricity to the consumers,” he said—(KNO)

Electricity Charges Will Increase Further In Kashmir: PDD

SRINAGAR: Notwithstanding the public resentment against the hike in monthly electricity bills, the authorities at the Power Development Department (PDD) on Thursday said the charges will increase further as the installation of LT cables and smart meters will display consumer’s actual electricity consumption.
Alleging that many consumers use four to five times more electricity beyond their sanctioned load, news agency KNO quoted the PDD Chief Engineer (Distribution), Javid Ahmad as having said.
“With the installation of LT cables and smart meters, the people will come to know about their actual electricity consumption as many people are sanctioned with 0.5 KV load but are using 5 KV. So, it is still way below what they are paying against the consumption,” he explained.
Stating that the billing tariff will not remain the same indefinitely, he said power is a commodity that needs to be purchased by the government.
Rejecting the people’s demands of switching back to their previous monthly electricity bills, the chief engineer termed those “out of question”. “People at many places protested against the installation of smart meters and LT cables, but ultimately these were installed. We have to move ahead and treat electricity as a commercial commodity,” he stressed.
Terming the hike as “arbitrary”, the people from various localities of the Safakadal area in Srinagar on Wednesday staged a protest against the PDD.
The protestors said they are witnessing a regular increase in their monthly power bills, and urged the authorities to restore their monthly electricity billing to their earlier tariff.

Pawar opposes Electricity Amendment Bill, says its implementation will hit consumers

Nashik: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Friday strongly opposed the recently introduced Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022, in Parliament and asserted its implementation will end subsidy offered to power consumers, adversely affect government-run energy companies and also cause job losses.
The Rajya Sabha MP said the Opposition will not allow passage of the Bill in Parliament in its existing form and continue to resist its provisions.
Speaking at an event here, Pawar said the Opposition has clearly conveyed to the Union government that it will not allow the Bill to be passed in its present form.
“Some days ago, a Bill for amendment to the Electricity Act, 2003, was introduced in Parliament. We oppose it because its implementation will stop power subsidy, shut down government-run energy companies and cause job losses,” said the former Union minister.
It may get passed in the Lok Sabha because of the majority enjoyed by the Narendra Modi government, but it will not get cleared in the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling dispensation lacks the required numbers, Pawar said.
Privatisation of public undertakings in the power sector is also under consideration of the government, he claimed.
“The Bill is before a parliamentary committee. Our stand is we will not allow this law to be passed in its current form,” the NCP leader added.
Pawar was speaking at a convention of the Maharashtra State Electricity Workers’ Federation.

The veteran politician said 40,000-42,000 existing vacancies in various state-run power firms should be filled and priority must be given to those working on these posts on contract.
“These posts should be filled up immediately. Preference should be given to employees working in these companies on contract. In states like Telangana, Punjab and Tamil Nadu contract workers have been absorbed in regular service and this should be done in Maharashtra also,” Pawar added.
“India is an agriculture-dominated economy. Earlier, 35 per cent people were doing farming, now more than 56 per cent people are involved in farming. There is burden on agriculture and new research is needed to improve the situation,” said the former Union agriculture minister.
Speaking at the convention, former Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal said government-run companies in the state should not be privatized.
All workers, employees, farmers and common people should come together to fight against privatization of state-run firms, said the NCP leader.

KYIV — Russia has launched extensive missile raids across Ukraine and is building up troops near the northeastern city of Kupyansk to test Ukrainian defenses, just as Kyiv is warning that Moscow is gearing up to launch a new offensive.
Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, commander in chief of Ukraine’s army, said in a statement that two Kalibr cruise missiles entered the airspace of Moldova and NATO member Romania, before veering into Ukrainian territory. Romania, however, cautioned that radar only detected a missile launched from a Russian ship in the Black Sea traveling close to its airspace — some 35 kilometers away — but not inside its territory.
“At approximately 10:33 a.m., these missiles crossed Romanian airspace. After that, they again entered the airspace of Ukraine at the crossing point of the borders of the three states. The missiles were launched from the Black Sea,” Zaluzhnyy said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy added, “Several Russian missiles flew through the airspace of Moldova and Romania. Today’s missiles are a challenge to NATO, collective security. This is terror that can and must be stopped. Stopped by the world.”
Governors in Kharkiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Khmelnytskyi reported power cuts due to the barrage.
The attack started before dawn in the eastern region of Kharkiv, according to the governor, Oleg Synegubov.
“Today, at 4:00 a.m., about 12 rockets hit critical infrastructure facilities in Kharkiv and the region. Currently, emergency and stabilizing light shutdowns are being employed. About 150,000 people in Kharkiv remain without electricity,” Synegubov said.
Synegubov said the barrage came the same morning as Russian invasion forces increased their attacks near Kupyansk, a city in the Kharkiv region that Ukrainian forces liberated last fall. “The enemy has increased its presence on the front line and is testing our defense lines for weak points. Our defenders reliably hold their positions and are ready for any possible actions of the enemy,” Synegubov said in a statement.
He also reported that about eight people were injured in one of the latest Russian missiles strikes in Kharkiv. Two of the victims are in critical condition.
Meanwhile, in the west of the country, Ukrainian air defense units are firing back at multiple cruise missile attacks. “That is Russian revenge for the fact that the whole world supports us,” Khmelnitskyi Governor Serhiy Hamaliy said in a statement. He also reported a missile strike in the city, saying that part of Khmelnitsky was without power.
Ukrainian Air Force Command reported the destruction of five cruise missiles and five of seven Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones Russia launched from the coast of the Sea of Azov. The Russians also launched six Kalibr sea-based cruise missiles from a Russian frigate in the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian Air Force added that air defense units shot down 61 of 71 cruise missiles that Russia launched.
“The occupiers also launched a massive attack with S-300 anti-aircraft missiles from the districts of Belgorod (Russia) and Tokmak (occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia region),” the air force said in a statement. “Up to 35 anti-aircraft guided missiles (S-300) were launched in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, which cannot be destroyed in the air by means of air defense. Around 8:30 a.m. cruise missiles were launched from Tu-95 MS strategic bombers.”

Snowfall Disrupts Electricity In Kashmir Parts; KPDCL Says Only Four 33KV Lines Under Fault

SRINAGAR: The fresh snowfall has disrupted the electricity supply in many parts of Kashmir, especially in northern districts while the authorities in Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) Monday said that only four 33 KV lines are under fault stressing that all the 33 KV feeders will be charged by evening.
Quoting an official statement, news agency KNO reported that at present 14 feeders of 33 KV lines, 215 11 KV feeders and other tap lines were under fault due to snowfall.
“Due to heavy snowfall during the intervening night of 30th Jan, electric supply to many areas of Kashmir Valley got disrupted. The load of the whole valley dipped below 850 MWs during the early morning hours of 30th Jan, 2022.”
The statement added that out of total 33 KV feeders, 14 were under fault along with four 33 KV Taplines which affected the power supply mainly to Sopore, Kupwara and Handwara.
It added that a few portions of District Budgam and of District Anantnag were also affected due to outage of four of 33 KV lines out of 14.
“In addition to that, around 215 11 KV feeders were under fault due to heavy snowfall.”
“From early Morning, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. field teams under the able guidance of MD, KPDCL Yasin.M.Choudhary were mobilized to rectify the faults.”
It added that despite the continuous snowfall in the region and braving the extreme freezing temperature, the field teams of KPDCL started patrolling the faulty lines and were able to bring up the load of Kashmir Valley to around 1590 MWs by 3 PM.

“It is pertinent to mention that at present only four 33 KV lines which specially feed to Sopore Area of District Baramullah and few areas of Bijbehera are under fault and by evening all the 33 KV lines will be charged. Out of all the 11 KV feeders only 154 feeders remain out due to the faulty status of four 33KV lines.”
MD, KPDCL is himself closely monitoring the situation and assures the public that all the feeders will be up and live. This is the first time that such a quick restoration has happened since the incorporation of KPDCL, it said.
Managing Director has also praised the patience shown by the public towards the corporation, that may have been affected by the disrupted electric lines that were under faulty since morning and assures the public that field team of KPDCL wont rest till all the feeders are up and running.

JNU stops BBC documentary screening by cutting internet, electricity

Even after the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) management issued a statement advising students to refrain from screening the banned BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a few of them decided to ignore the university. However, their plans were ruined when both the internet and electricity went out in the students’ union office.
The screening that was to begin at 9 pm on Tuesday could not start.
In a statement released the previous day, the JNU administration said that no prior permission was taken from the administration.
“The concerned students/individuals are firmly advice to cancel the proposed programme immediately failing which strict disciplinary action may be initiated as per the university rules,” the JNU administration statement said.
“This is to emphasise that such an unauthorised activity may disturb peace and harmony of the university campus,” the university said.
What is the BBC documentary on Modi?
The new two-part documentary series of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) ‘India: The Modi Question‘ focuses on the 2002 Gujarat riots that killed thousands and left millions homeless, especially in the Muslim community, and the role played by the then chief minister Narendra Modi’s government.
The two-part documentary which is aired only in the United Kingdom looks at the escalating tension between the Muslim community and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Hindu right-wing organisations – Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The first part of the two-part series, reportedly reveals ‘never-seen-before’ or ‘restricted’ documents in detail. These reports were never published to the public.

It also said the “violence was politically motivated” and the aim “was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”. The riots were impossible “without the climate of impunity created by the state government.”
Speaking to the BBC, former foreign secretary, Jack Straw (2001-2006) said he was personally involved in the investigations as the data and results provided were alarming.
“I was very worried about it. I took a great deal of personal interest because India is an important country with whom we (the UK) have relations. And so, we had to handle it very carefully,” Straw told the BBC, adding, “What we did was establish an inquiry and have a team go to Gujarat and find out for themselves what had happened. And they produced a very thorough report.

Japan power company seeks to raise household electricity prices by 30%

Tokyo: The Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. (TEPCO) said that it has applied to the government to raise its regulated electricity rates for households by around 30 percent from June in response to surging energy prices and the yen’s weakening.
The rate hike application, following five other major power companies which have already filed for the government’s approval to raise prices by between 28 percent and 46 percent from April, reflects a deteriorating business performance due to soaring prices of fossil fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and thermal coal for power generation, reports Xinhua news agency.
Japan’s Industry Ministry will examine details of TEPCO’s cost reduction measures and decide on the actual rate increase.
Tomoaki Kobayakawa, president of TEPCO, told reporters at a press conference that the company would have problems ensuring stable supplies of electricity if it leaves the situation as it is.
“We don’t want to place a burden on our customers, but we’ve made the tough decision,” he said.
The hike in the regulated rates would be the first for TEPCO since 2012 when it raised the rates in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
