New York City subway chokehold death divides elected officials

The incident has sparked growing concern throughout the week, most prominently from left-leaning New York officials.

“NYC is not Gotham. We must not become a city where a mentally ill human being can be choked to death by a vigilante without consequences. Or where the killer is justified & cheered,” City Comptroller Brad Lander tweeted Tuesday.

A day later, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighed in.

“Jordan Neely was murdered. But bc Jordan was houseless and crying for food in a time when the city is raising rents and stripping services to militarize itself while many in power demonize the poor, the murderer gets protected w/ passive headlines + no charges,” she tweeted. “It’s disgusting.”

The former Marine has not been charged in the case. But on Wednesday night, Mayor Eric Adams chided his fellow elected officials for getting ahead of the district attorney, who is looking into the incident.

“I don’t think that’s very responsible at a time when we are still investigating the situation. Let’s let the DA conduct his investigation with law enforcement officials,” Adams said during an appearance on CNN. “To interfere with that is not the right thing to do.”

Adams, who was once a transit cop during his career with the NYPD, urged observers to reserve judgment until more facts in the case are known.

“We cannot just blatantly say what a passenger should or should not do in a situation like that,” he said.

In a statement Wednesday, Bragg’s office detailed some of the steps it would be taking as it looks into the case — and alluded that updates may not arrive as quickly as some observers would like.

“This is a solemn and serious matter that ended in the tragic loss of Jordan Neely’s life,” DA spokesperson Doug Cohen said in a statement. “As part of our rigorous ongoing investigation, we will review the Medical Examiner’s report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records. This investigation is being handled by senior, experienced prosecutors and we will provide an update when there is additional public information to share.”

While Adams occupies far more moderate political territory than Bragg, who was elected as a progressive, he has been a staunch ally of the prosecutor, declining to pile on during the disastrous rollout of a policy memo early in Bragg’s tenure, for example.

His deference to the process now gives Bragg some political cover, even as pressure builds to bring charges from a broader slice of the political spectrum.

Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, whose political philosophy aligns more closely with the mayor’s, released a lengthy statement Wednesday night lamenting Neely’s killing and calling for a thorough investigation.

“Racism that continues to permeate throughout our society allows for a level of dehumanization that denies Black people from being recognized as victims when subjected to acts of violence,” she said, later adding that “The initial response by our legal system to this killing is disturbing and puts on display for the world the double standards that Black people and other people of color continue to face.”

People of J-K can’t be deprived of elected govt for long time: Azad

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that the time has come for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and it is undemocratic to deprive the people of an elected government for a long time.

The former Union minister said that DPAP is a party that believes in democratic values and will ensure that various pro-people initiatives are launched to benefit the weaker sections of people in our society if elected to power.

“If the DPAP is elected to power we will ensure the poor are provided free electricity and other benefits so that they won’t face burden on their budget. We will also work to create diverse economic opportunities in various sectors including tourism, agriculture and horticulture so that the economy of common people improves,” he said while addressing a public gathering at Bandipora.

    MS Education Academy

Azad said that when he was the Chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, he granted the district status to Bandipora, opened hospitals, colleges and set up a long network of roads to benefit the people.

However, it has been a long time since then and the development in the district seems at a halt now and successive governments have overlooked the growing infrastructural requirements of the district, he said.

Azad said that unlike other people, he would not make false promises and keep people in the dark.

“I will make promises and will deliver on them unlike most of the politicians who visit you and make a number of promises never to deliver,” he said.

India elected to UN statistical body; China suffers diplomatic rout

    [ad_1]

United Nations: In a sign of India’s diplomatic influence, it has been elected to the UN Statistical Commission and two other bodies while China suffered a diplomatic rout unable to get the required votes for the Commission when it squared off against India.

India was elected unopposed in two elections on Wednesday by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs and the Programme Coordinating Board of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS.

In the election to the Statistical Commission where China was competing with India for seats earmarked for the Asia Pacific region, India received 46 of the 53 votes for the Statistical Commission electing it to one of the two seats for the Asia Pacific region in the first round of voting.

    MS Education Academy

China came in third with paltry 19 votes, while South Korea received 23 and the United Arab Emirates 15, necessitating a second round of ballotting because none of them received the majority of 27 votes required for election to the region’s second seat under the rules.

In the runoff between China and South Korea, they tied with 25 votes each and under the rules, ECOSOC President Lachezara Stoeva drew lots to break the tie and Seoul was picked.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar tweeted, “India’s expertise in the field of statistics, diversity & demography has earned it a seat on the UN Statistical Commission.”

He congratulated India’s UN Mission team for “for coming through so strongly in a competitive election”.

Seats on most UN bodies are allocated by region, although all countries vote to pick the candidates from the region.

India, which will begin its term on the Statistical Commission in 2024, returns after 20 years having completed its last term in 2004.

The Statistical Commission bills itself as “the highest body of the global statistical system bringing together the chief statisticians from member states from around the world”.

It sets statistical standards and develops concepts and methods, at the national and international levels.

China’s poor performance in the Statistical Commission election, securing only 19 votes and trailing South Korea was a surprise because of the extensive diplomatic and economic campaigns it has undertaken around the world.

Xi Jinping unanimously elected Chinese President for historic 3rd term

    [ad_1]

Beijing: Xi Jinping was unanimously elected president of China for a historic third term at the ongoing session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) on Friday.

He was also elected as chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), reports Xinhua news agency.

Nearly 3,000 members of the (NPC) voted unanimously at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for Xi to be President in an election where there was no other candidate.

Following the election, the 69-year-old President also made a public pledge of allegiance to the Constitution.

Xi’s new five-year run was made possible following a change to the constitution in 2018 that scrapped term limits.

The vote on Friday was largely ceremonial as he had already locked in a historic third term as head of the Chinese Communist Party at a major party congress last October, sealing his place as China’s most powerful ruler since Mao Zedong.

Changes to the country’s leadership take place every five years and usually closely mirror the reshuffle announced at the party congress.

  • McClellan elected as Virginia’s first Black woman in Congress

McClellan elected as Virginia’s first Black woman in Congress

    [ad_1]

    virginia gun safety 36051

McClellan is the vice chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus and a former gubernatorial candidate. She spent more than 10 years in Virginia’s House of Delegates and succeeded McEachin in the state Senate when he was elected to Congress in 2016.

Following her primary win in December, McClellan said the lack of a Black woman in Virginia’s congressional delegation was due in part to “an imagination gap that only saw certain types of people as members of Congress. Part of it is that Black women tended to get involved in politics later in life. But it’s past time that we have one.”

The district spans 15 cities and counties, but the largest chunk of voters is in Richmond — a city with a predominantly Black population. It’s a deep-blue seat that McClellan was favored to win following the action-packed firehouse primary in December, which the state Democratic Party scrambled to organize as four candidates jockeyed for the seat over the course of a week.

Alexsis Rodgers, chair of the 4th Congressional District Democratic Committee, said she felt that momentum continued after the primary despite it being an off-year special election. “Democrats are just really fired up,” she said.

“It could be a decade or more before an opportunity to run happens, and, even in times when there are more competitive races in swing districts, a lot of times Black women or women of color are considered less viable or less likely to win,” Rodgers continued. “It’s a barrier that we’re going to continue to have to chip away at, and I think that means helping organizations understand that they have to invest in Black women candidates early, not just wait to see if they can make it to the primary.”

During the primary, McClellan received an outpouring of support from local and national Democratic politicians and groups. Throughout the primary and the general election, she raised over $900,000. McClellan has campaigned on the work she’s done in the state legislature regarding voting rights, abortion access and environmental protections.

Her win will bring the House to its full complement of 435 members — for at least a few months, anyway. Earlier Tuesday, Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) announced that he will be leaving Congress on June 1 to head the Rhode Island Foundation. A special election will be set once his resignation takes effect.

McClellan has shrugged off the slog of joining the minority in the House: “I spent 14 years in the minority party in the Virginia Legislature and still was able to get over 300 bills passed,” she said in an interview after her primary win. “I think it’s a natural progression of the work that I have been doing already.”

In her victory speech on Tuesday night, McClellan nodded again to her work in the state legislature — “I passed two bills today!” — and paid tribute to McEachin. “I am ready to get to work,” she said. “I have a little more work to do down the street, but I’m ready to fight for you in Congress for as long as you’ll have me.”
