  • Keeping one day roza during Ramadan by Justice Katju

Keeping one day roza during Ramadan by Justice Katju

Though I am a Hindu, for the last 25-30 years I have kept one day roza ( fast ) during the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan ( called Ramzan in India where I live ), usually on the last Friday, called Alvida.

I also appeal every year to all non Muslims to do the same to express respect and solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters.

This does not mean that non Muslims must change their religion and become Muslims. It is just a symbolic act, to show our respect and solidarity with our Muslim brethren, who are often vilified.

I am a humble disciple of the great French political philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau ( 1712-78 ) who believed in the inherent goodness of people. I too think that 99% members of all religions, whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jew, Buddhist or any other, and of all races and communities, are good by nature. They are, however, vilified by the bigoted acts of the remaining 1%.

We have to end the false propaganda that all Muslims are terrorists. People in the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere are tired of communalism and religious bigotry, and are realising the great harm it does. To counter this poison, we have to administer antidotes. Non-Muslims observing roza for one day during Ramzan and non-Hindus observing vrat for one day during Navratri could be one such antidote.

This year too I will observe one day roza tomorrow, 21st April 2023, which is the last Friday of Ramzan, and I appeal to non Muslims everywhere to do the same.

I enquired from my Muslim friends in Delhi who told me that the time of sehri, the time for beginning the fast in Delhi is 4.20 a.m. ( different regions have different timings ), after which one must not eat or drink anything till the time of iftaar, which is 6.50 p.m. here, when one may break the fast.

So I have told my wife to boil 2 eggs and keep them along with some bread and fruits and milk in the refrigerator at night today. I will get up early morning tomorrow, 21st April, at 4 a.m.and consume these with lots of water before 4.20 a.m, and then begin my fast, which will last till the time of iftaar.

When I was in California a few years back I kept one day roza during Ramzan, after which I had iftaar and dinner at the residence of my friend Shaista Ali who lives in California. Here is a pic of the iftaar. Standing next to me is my friend Santosh Addagulla.

Australia announces first day of Eid Al-Fitr

    [ad_1]

The Australian Fatwa Council has announced that Friday, April 21, will be the last day of Ramzan and Saturday will be the first day of Eid Al-Fitr and the start of the month of Shawwal 1444/2023.

The statement released confirmed that after inquiries to local and international observatories in Sydney, Eid A-Fitr 2023 will be on Saturday, April 22, and the first day of the month of Shawwal 1444 AH.

“In Perth, Western Australia, the new moon of the month will be born on April 20, 2023, at 12.12 pm AWST, the sun sets on the same day at 5.50 pm while the moon will set at 5.54 pm, this is not a sufficient time to sight the new moon of the month of Shawwal on that night, Therefore, Friday, April 21, 2023, will be the last day of the Month of Ramadan 1444AH,” the Council adds.

    MS Education Academy

It further explained that the method by which the Mufti of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council determined the end of Ramzan, the first days of Shawwal and the day of Eid Al-Fitr, is based on the calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moon setting after sunset and the possibility of seeing the moon. This is a method that has been adopted by many eminent and reputable global scholars councils.

“The Australian National Imams Council and the Australian Fatwa Council acknowledge, understand and respect imams and scholars who may have a different opinion, and ask all Muslims to respect the different opinions on this subject and work for the unity of the Muslim community in preserving the common values and interests they all share,” it said.

    What is Eid Al-Fitr?

At the end of the holy month of Ramzan, Eid Al-Fitr is a holiday that marks the end of a full month of fasting. Practices vary around the world but usually include morning prayers, public holidays, visits with family and friends, new clothes and henna, gift-giving and charitable contributions.

  • Saudi: 20,714 mosques readied for Eid Al-Fitr prayer

Saudi: 20,714 mosques readied for Eid Al-Fitr prayer

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: In preparations for the Eid Al-Fitr prayer, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has announced that 20,714 mosques and outdoor areas across the Kingdom are ready.

The Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance has equipped these sites with the necessary safety measures to ensure a safe environment for worshippers.

The ministry has assigned more than 6,000 observers, both men and women, to monitor mosques and places of prayer and follow up on the operations of maintenance and operating companies.

    MS Education Academy

The ministry called on citizens to communicate with them in the event that anyone monitors or notices something that needs reform in the services provided to mosques.

According to the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta, if the Eid falls on a Friday, then it is permissible for those who attend the Eid prayer not to attend the Friday prayer, but rather perform the Dhuhr prayer instead.

However, the ministry advises that it is best to perform Eid prayers and Friday prayers. Those who did not attend the Eid prayer are obliged to perform the Friday prayer.

The ministry issued instructions to the imams to perform the Friday prayer if that coincided with Eid so that those who did not witness the Eid prayer could perform the Friday prayer. But if there is not a sufficient number of worshipers for the Friday prayer, then the Dhuhr prayer is performed.

The ministry confirmed that the call to prayer (Azaan or Adhan) is prescribed only in mosques where Friday prayers are held. The call to prayer is not prescribed for the noon prayer on that day.

Those who attended the Eid prayer must perform the Dhuhr prayer if they did not attend the Friday prayer. The ministry relied on the committee’s fatwa, which states that Friday and Dhuhr prayers are not obligatory to perform the Eid prayer, which is incorrect and wrong.

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: In view of upcoming festivals like Eid and Akshay Tritiya, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday issued directions regarding holding programmes in the state and ordered that no religious event be held by obstructing roads and traffic.

Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, Director General of Police (DGP) R K Vishwakarma and other senior officials held a review meeting with all field officials posted in the state through video conferencing and issued necessary guidelines, an official release said.

There should be adequate arrangements for the security of religious places and additional police forces should be deployed in sensitive areas, DGP Vishwakarma said.

    MS Education Academy

Prasad directed all the concerned officers posted in the field to ensure that religious programmes, worshipping, etc. take place at the designated places only. Under no circumstances should any religious event be held by obstructing roads and traffic, the release said.

“In the past, we have been able to do this through communication. This year also, we have to make the same effort,” he said.

According to the release, no religious procession or any other procession should be taken out without due permission. Permission should be given only to those religious processions that are traditional, and unnecessary permission should not be given to new events, it said.

The principal secretary also told the officers to be vigilant about social media and ensure immediate response to any attempt aimed to spread fake news. A senior officer should do a refutation of rumour/fake news, he said.

“The safety of every citizen in the state is the primary responsibility of all of us. The month of Ramzan is going on. Eid-ul-Fitr, Akshaya Tritiya and Parshuram Jayanti are likely to be celebrated on the same day on April 22. In view of the present environment, the police will have to be extra careful,” Prasad said.

“Deal sternly with those issuing mischievous statements. Strict action should be taken against the chaotic elements that try to cause harm to the peaceful atmosphere in the state,” he said.

DGP Vishwakarma took the details of the preparations made for the upcoming festivals from all the zone/range/district level officers and instructed that police force should continuously patrol congested areas and senior officers should also participate in it.
