Burning the Quran By Justice Katju

An Iraqi immigrant living in Sweden reportedly burnt a copy of the Quran on Wednesday, 28th June, publicly before the Central Mosque of Stockholm in Sweden.

Many Arab and other Muslim countries have condemned this incident, and protests are still going on in the Muslim world.

However, Sweden has approved Quran burning protests as part of the freedom of speech enshrined in its Constitution.

Now let me give my opinion on this issue.
The Quran is the holiest book in Islam, and I can quite understand that most Muslims feel very hurt if a copy of it is deliberately burnt publicly. I too condemn such mischievous acts.

However, the question is what should be the response of Muslims to such desecrations and insults ?

I submit that the best and most mature response would be to simply ignore them.

It must be realised that such mischievous acts are usually done deliberately by agent provocateurs hired by powerful forces to provoke religious, ethnic, or communal strife.

Gullible Muslims innocently fall into their trap by being provoked, and then the matter gets further exacerbated.

In Hindi there is a proverb ‘taali do haath se bajti hai’ ( i.e. to clap needs two hands ). So if Muslims do not extend their hand, and turn a Nelson’s eye to such provocative and insulting acts, there will be no clap, and such mischievous people will be denied the publicity they seek, and on which they survive.

  • Eid al Adha in Court By Justice Katju

Eid al Adha in Court By Justice Katju

Today 29th June is Eid al Adha ( also called Eid ul Zoha or Bakrid ) an important festival among Muslims in which an animal is sacrificed ( qurbani ).

This reminded me of a case I heard in the Allahabad High Court shortly after I was appointed a Judge there in 1991.

The petition, presented a few days before Eid al Adha, prayed that I should order ban on slaughter of buffaloes as a sacrifice during Eid.

Now it is a belief among Muslims that sacrifice of one buffalo gives the same spiritual benefit of qurbani to 7 persons which sacrifice of a goat gives to one person. So poor persons who cannot afford to buy a goat, often collectively buy a buffalo and sacrifice it, as the per head cost is much less than the cost of a goat.

I asked the counsel for the petitioner why I should ban killing of buffaloes during Eid ? He replied that buffalo is the carriage ( sawaari ) of the Hindu god Yamraj ( the god of death ). So slaughter of buffaloes hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus.

I replied that mouse is the sawaari of Lord Ganesh. Should I ban killing of mice ? Most Hindu gods ( it is said there are 330 million of them ) have some animal as a ‘sawaari’ or ‘vaahan’. Should killing all of such sawaaris be banned ?

    https://www.hinduismfacts.org/how-many-gods-are-there-in-hinduism/

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vahana
I added that this would be absurd. I could only prohibit killing of some animal if there is a statutory law against it. For instance, there is a law against killing of cows in most ( but not all ) states of India e.g. the UP Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955. So I could pass an order prohibiting slaughter of cows.

There is also a Wildlife ( Protection ) Act, 1972, so I could prohibit killing of wildlife.

But to prohibit killing of some animal, though there is no law for that, just because someone’s religious feelings are allegedly ‘hurt’, would not only have no legal justification, but would also raise a host of problems.

    Which animal is sacred ?

Opinions may differ on that ?

When do religious feelings get ‘hurt’ ?

    Again, opinions may differ.

I dismissed the petition, saying I would only enforce the law, not sentiments.

  • China banned most Uyghurs praying in mosques, homes during Eid

China banned most Uyghurs praying in mosques, homes during Eid

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Chinese authorities banned most Uyghurs praying in mosques — and even in their homes — during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, in many parts of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, residents and police said, the media reported.

People aged 60 and older were allowed to pray in a local mosque under heavy police surveillance during Eid, Radio Free Asia reported.

Since 2017, China has restricted or banned ethnic customs and religious rituals among the mostly Muslim Uyghurs in an effort to stamp out “religious extremism”, RFA reported.

    MS Education Academy

During this year’s Eid, the most important Muslim holiday, authorities in Xinjiang patrolled city streets and searched houses to prevent people from secretly praying inside their homes, sources said, RFA reported.

An administrative staffer from Yarkowruk town in Akesu Prefecture said one mosque there was open for Eid prayers.

“Our police officers went to the mosque to watch the people,” the employee said. “I don’t know if people needed permission to go to the mosque because I did not go there.”

Likewise, only one mosque was open for Eid prayers in Bulung town, Bay county, an officer at the local police station said, though only residents over 60 years old were allowed to pray if they wanted.

The government issued a notice that people younger than 60 could not pray on the Eid holiday, he added, RFA reported.

Only a dozen Uyghur elders in Bulung attended Eid prayers in a mosque as three police officers and several auxiliary police staffers observed and wrote down the Uyghurs’ names, said the officer from the town’s police station.

“The mosque was open yesterday, and we went there to surveil people,” the police officer said, adding that he told residents under 60 not to go to the mosque.

Eid prayers: 2,000 people booked in Kanpur for offering namaz on road

    [ad_1]

Kanpur: More than 2,000 people were booked in three FIRs for offering namaz without permission on a road outside the Eidgah here on Eid last week, police here said on Thursday.

The FIRs were registered separately at Bajaria, Babu Purwa, and Jajmau police stations on Wednesday. No arrests have been made so far.

A video of the people offering namaz on road was made by the police.

    MS Education Academy

“People offering namaz will be identified on the basis of video after which legal action will be taken against them,” said an officer requesting anonymity.

Angry with the police action, Mohammad Suleman, a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, told the media that they were being targeted on the basis of religion.

He said that a few people did pray on the road outside the Eidgah because they were late and there was no space left inside the premises.

One of the FIRs was lodged at the Bajaria Police Station against 1,000-1,500 unknown persons including some members of the Eidgah management committee at the complaint of Senior Sub Inspector (SSI) Omveer Singh.

Omveer Singh in his complaint said a large number of people got down to offer namaz on the road as soon as a call for it was made on Eid, violating Section 144.

About 300 people were booked by Jajmau Police, while the third FIR was made at Babu Purwa Police Station in which over 50 people were charged with offering prayers on a public road without permission.

The people were booked under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharging duties), 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 283 (Danger in public way), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), and 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty).

Another police officer said that guidelines on Eid prayers had been issued after a meeting with the peace committees and strict instructions were given that prayers should not be held on the street.

Tripura: BJP leaders thrash Hindu vlogger for posting Eid greeting

    [ad_1]

A 23-year-old vlogger Bapan Nandi in Tripura was assaulted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for posting Eid greeting in a video.

Nandi said he was trying to promote communal harmony.

As the video went viral, BJP leader Anu Mura Singh and a few Hindutva politicians were irked with Nandi’s four-minute video.

    MS Education Academy

NewsClick reported that the BJP leaders allegedly took the matter to the Police Line Bazaar area and filed a complaint against the vlogger. Following this, the police called Nandi for interrogation.

Meanwhile, Mura Singh and a few Hindutva leaders attacked Nandi. One of them recorded the assault and posted it on social media.

    Subsequently, the video went viral.

In the video, a female BJP leader can be seen grabbing Nandi by his collar and thrashing him. She was also questioning why Nandi had portrayed himself “as a Muslim and demeaned Hindus.”

He should have stuck with his “Hindu origins proudly,” she added.

Nandi could be seen begging for mercy while he was being thrashed by the group, according to NewsClick.

“The Deputy Chief of East Gokul Nagar Panchayat called me and asked if I can visit his place. As I knew him I reached there and found about 40 men were waiting for me,” EastMojo quoted Nandi.

“The Panchayat leader slapped me and thrashed me in front of everyone. I kept asking what was my fault? Nandi informed him that the video was produced by another channel and the casting was done by him.

“No one was interested in listening to me,” he added.

It is reported that the police have registered the case on orders of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders.

Nandi claimed that he made the video for communal harmony. The video asked people not to get divided into communal lines and to celebrate the festival of Eid in harmony.

Two artists who acted in the Eid video, Uma Debnath and Sneha Bhowmik issued statements saying they never thought that the video will be so problematic or that it would any ruckus.

The artists and several other people have condemned the beating of Nandi and extended support to him.
