Education on road safety key to improving safety standards in India: Gadkari

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari, on Tuesday sought the cooperation of business women and corporate in inculcating a culture of road safety among road users in the country.

“Apart from road engineering, the most important factor for improving road safety in the country is to change human behaviour that violates road rules. Till human behaviour changes, rules won’t be followed. The government alone cannot do this, we need private partnerships,” Gadkari said while speaking at an event organised by the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO).

“In India, five lakh accidents take place each year resulting in 1.5 lakh deaths out of which 60 per cent are youth in the age group of 18-34 years. Women entrepreneurs can help promote road safety at school level as well as teach their employees and their families imbibe a culture of road safety and use their logistics and carriers to propagate the message of education on road safety and enforcement of rules, which are key to improve safety standards in India,” Gadkari said.

“I see knowledge as power. I also see waste as wealth. Appropriate technology is needed to see the end results. Need-based research should be of primary importance in order to be successful in whatever you do. One should think ahead, because green hydrogen is the fuel of the future. Petrol is becoming precious and we need alternative fuels. I think of a dozen alternative fuels such as biodiesel, natural gas, ethanol, methane, propane, electricity and hydrogen, which are currently under development or in production to power vehicles of the future and some are even available,” the minister said.

“Women should also work towards improving ecology and environment. The Ministry of Road Transport in a bid to improve air quality in the national capital is developing a six-lane Urban Extension Road (UER) II which will be the capital’s third Ring Road. It is likely to be operational by the end of this year,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Jayanti Dalmia, National President, FLO, said, “FLO with 19 chapters and 9,000 members across India represents women entrepreneurs and professionals through our mandate of empowering them and equipping them with skills and capacities to become equal contributors to the Indian economy.”

  • Biden’s Education secretary is done sitting ‘idly’ amid schools fight

Biden’s Education secretary is done sitting ‘idly’ amid schools fight

    [ad_1]

Cardona advocated for tighter gun laws after last year’s killings at Robb Elementary and has warned that the country risks failing students in Covid-19’s wake. Yet his newly public exasperation with school-centered partisanship comes as the Republican-controlled House approved sweeping “Parents Bill of Rights” legislation that captures broad strokes of pandemic-era conservative education wars.

“When we talk about politicization, when we talk about book banning, when we talk about Black history curriculum being picked apart — I think there are deliberate attempts to make sure that our public schools are not functional so that the private option sounds better,” the education secretary said. “I don’t doubt that’s intentional.”

    Elections are also at play.

Nearly 30,000 school board seats are on the ballot this year across the country.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a likely 2024 Republican presidential candidate who weighed in on school board races last year — has tapped conservative energy with a range of education issues. He signed one measure restricting how gender identities are discussed with schoolchildren, launched a feud over an Advanced Placement African American history course, and is primed to sign major private school voucher legislation.

Biden’s other potential challengers also frame their education concerns with a distinct culture war bent.

Conservatives say they’re the ones on the defensive. Many Republican governors and lawmakers argue their restrictions on classroom lessons, curriculum, and LGBTQ students are meant to blunt diversity initiatives run amok or what they see as the misapplication of legal protections to include transgender people.

Some Republican groups are also looking to combine a longstanding push for expansive school choice programs with renewed efforts to harness more power on local school boards.

“Many school board members are intertwined with biased political ideologies and are controlled by special interests groups like the teachers unions,” said Laura Zorc, the education reform director at the conservative FreedomWorks organization, after Florida lawmakers sent their school choice bill to DeSantis.

“The only way parents can ensure that their children receive a high quality education is if state educational dollars, traditionally earmarked for local school districts, are directed to parents who want the very best for their children,” Zorc said in a statement.

Cardona’s public frustration dovetails with a growing political counteroffensive from White House allies.

National Education Association President Becky Pringle and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten recently denounced DeSantis during an Orlando rally, and Weingarten is scheduled to deliver an address “in defense of public education” in Washington this week.

The Democratic Party of Illinois last week unveiled what it called an unprecedented effort to endorse dozens of candidates in nonpartisan local school and library board races. It also plans to funnel nearly $300,000 into an advertising and organizing campaign surrounding those elections.

Amid all this tension, Cardona has wielded recent op-eds in Newsweek and the Tampa Bay Times to accuse Republicans of “hiding behind the guise of ‘parents’ rights’” to defund public schools and trying to “hijack” classroom discussions.

And the secretary met last week with school superintendent and teacher representatives, who, he said, “feel the same way.”

“It just seems like it’s a constant attack on what I know as a dad, and what I know as an educator, is happening in our schools,” Cardona said in the interview. “Education being used to divide communities is the challenge that we face now as leaders.”

That challenge, he told state superintendents assembled in Washington last week, “is even harder than what we had in 2020” when Covid-19 first shuttered schools.

“Our students are as [emotionally] dysregulated as they ever have been in the last twenty years. The surgeon general reminded us that we’re in a youth mental health crisis, where one in three high school girls has considered suicide in the last three years,” Cardona told POLITICO. “I’m tired of folks looking to get political points by attacking vulnerable students, vulnerable communities and attacking our schools.”

He added: “If we’re not standing up for our students, who will? I feel it’s time.”

  • Education Department Warns Private Schools On Fee Hike

Education Department Warns Private Schools On Fee Hike

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The School Education Department (SED) has warned private schools of Valley’s North and Central Kashmir districts of strict action for unilateral hike in tuition fees and other charges collected from the parents under different heads.

As per the circular instructions issued by the Joint director Central and North Kashmir districts, the private schools have been warned to refrain from giving unilateral hike in fees and remain careful in future, while going for a revision or hike in fees.

“Parents of students studying in Private Schools of Central and North Kashmir districts are openly coming in social media, print and electronic media to express their anger and grievances with regard to overcharging of various fees like admission fee ,tuition fee and bus fees collected by the Private Institutions from the students in Brazen violation of rules and regulations and cannons prescribed by the (FFRC) Fee Fixation Review Committee established by the Govt of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory,” the circular reads.

The move as per the department circular has been viewed “very seriously” by the higher authorities and the stakeholders.

“Parents of the students who have to bear the brunt of the onslaught of this unilateral hike of fees by the unbridled School Managements, who are always in search of opportunities to give a hike to the fee in any Head/Sector without any plausible justification and slap this Hukum-I-Tughlak to the parents through WhatsApp/SMS/Telephonic-Calls,” the circular reads.

The department has observed that the private school managements have become so arrogant that they withhold the results of the students who don’t pay advance fees of the current month which is yet to finish.

“They don’t bother or feel it necessary to consult the Parent Body, Working Committee or any official machinery to get the hike of charges examined, discussed, justified, and finally accepted by one and all,” the circular reads.

The joint director has warned the Private School Managements to remain careful in future, while going for a revision or hike in fees and shall immediately consult the Chief Education Officers or Zonal Education Officers concerned and the Parents Body of that school and move a proposal for any such hike.

“With this, the menace of overcharging of fees, exorbitant admission fees are streamlined as per standard of school, the facilities provided by school, quality of education, transport facilities, playground,” it reads.

The Joint Director has issued instructions to all the Chief Education Officers and Zonal Education Officers of all the six districts including, Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara to mobilize themselves and re-activate their institutions.

“Make surprise visits to your school jurisdictions and take cognizance of complaints received in this behalf and take a strong notice of violations to curb this menace with Iron hard and restore confidence and faith of General Public, Parents and students in the law of the land and law enforcing agencies,” the circular reads. • House Republicans pass broad education measure on ‘parents rights’

House Republicans pass broad education measure on ‘parents rights’

    [ad_1]

    image

Amendment drama: The bill also became a sweeping vehicle for several other GOP priorities such as ensuring parents know what their schooling options are and policies on transgender students. However, Republicans failed to shore up enough votes to add a sense of Congress that the Education Department should be eliminated by the end of the calendar year.

Roughly half of the 22 amendments considered on the floor were tacked onto the legislation ahead of the final vote, which came after some internal strife among Republicans about the limited debate. The amendments that received bipartisan support included requiring schools to provide parents timely notices on major cyberattacks and the GAO to submit a report to Congress on the cost of the requirements of the bill and to evaluate the impact of the bill on protecting parents’ rights.

The legislation — which has already faced condemnation from the White House — will not be brought up on the other side of the Capitol, said Senate Majority Leader Schumer, who vowed Friday that the bill “will meet a dead end” in his chamber.

The Education Department was also quick to criticize the bill.

“The Biden-Harris Administration is happy to work with House Republicans on the issues most important to parents. … Unfortunately, looking at Republican officials’ track record on education, it’s not rooted in the reality that parents are living in,” an Education Department spokesperson told POLITICO in a statement. “Whether it be cutting funding for public education, ignoring tragic gun violence in our schools, or banning books to fit a political agenda, Republican officials are focused more on playing politics than helping our parents, kids and schools.”

Still, the House vote does allow Republicans to use Democrats’ vote against a “Parents Bill of Rights” as 2024 campaign fodder.

While the measure was lauded by many Republicans, especially the party’s leadership, Democrats and the handful of Republicans who voted against the measure criticized it.

Gaetz on Twitter said he voted against the bill because “the federal government SHOULD NOT be involved in education” and he wants to “abolish” the Education Department.

Buck also expressed a similar sentiment, tweeting that “the overwhelming majority of the House Republicans will now be on record supporting the idea of expanded federal powers in your child’s education.”

Pushback on transgender student provisions: Several LGBTQ advocacy groups denounced the legislation due to the inclusion of provisions that establish that a parent has the right to know whether their child’s school allows transgender girls to play on sports teams or use restrooms and changing rooms that match their gender identity. The bill would also require schools gain parental consent to allow students to use different names and pronouns or facilities that match their gender identity.

“These efforts to censor curriculum and force the outing of transgender and nonbinary students are borrowing from a discriminatory wave of bills sweeping the country — a wave of bills, incidentally, that the majority of voters have not asked for and do not support,” said David Stacy, the government affairs director for the Human Rights Campaign.

In the coming weeks, Republicans are expected to consider a bill — H.R. 734 (118), the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023 — that would restrict transgender girls from playing on women and girls’ sports teams.

Lawmakers attached the amendments seeking to mandate disclosures around transgender students by voice vote this week, signaling that lawmakers on both parties weren’t yet ready to force their colleagues into a roll call on the sensitive issue. The sports bill would be the next prominent opportunity for the GOP to put lawmakers on record for gender identity policies.

Delhi: AAP govt allocates Rs 16,575 crore for education sector

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi government will provide new tablets to all teachers, principals and vice-principals, besides setting up new computers in 350 schools in the national capital in 2023-24.

The Delhi Budget presented by Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday allocated Rs 16,575 crore for the education department for the year 2023-24.

In the 2022-23 Delhi Budget, the education sector received the highest allocation of Rs 16,278 crore.

Providing 20 new computers to each of the 350 schools under the Delhi government and teaching of French, German, Japanese and Spanish languages in Schools of Specialised Excellence are the highlights of Delhi’s budget for the education sector.

The minister said more branches of the Ambedkar Schools of Specialised Education will come up in 2023. In 2021, there were 20 schools of specialised education, which will be increased to 37 in 2023.

Gahlot also announced that schools and industries will collaborate to develop professional skills for children at Schools of Applied Learning.

According to the Delhi government, around 56 students of the first batch of the Entrepreneurial Mindset Curriculum got direct admissions in the top seven universities of Delhi in courses such as BBA and B.Tech.

The first batch of Delhi’s Model Virtual School got students from 14 different states across the nation, the minister said.

He further said that in the past eight years, 1,410 teachers, principals and educators were sent to Finland, Singapore and Cambridge by the Delhi government, 1,247 principals received training in IIM Ahmedabad and 61 principals in IIM Lucknow.

State-of-the-art sports complexes have been developed in the last five years, including the International Sports Complex in Kair (Najafgarh), Mundhela Sports Complex and the Pehladpur Sports Complex, Gahlot said.

Projects in the pipeline include a wrestling hostel and relaying of synthetic tracks at the Chhatrasal Stadium, upgrading the Rajiv Gandhi stadium and construction of a squash centre at the Thyagraj stadium, the minister said.

He added that there are plans to develop a multipurpose sports complex at Samaspur Khalsa in Najafgarh for which 35 acres of land have already been allocated.

The government has disbursed an amount of Rs 110 crore to more than 9,000 players in the last eight years, the minister said.

  • Three Essential Tips to Create a Captivating Book Cover

    [ad_1]

Everyone says that it’s bad to judge a book by its cover. Yet, everyone does so. And that is one of the essential reasons book covers matter so much to the reader. After all, they are the first point of contact between the author and the reader.

While your book’s manuscript primarily keeps your reader hooked, the cover acts as a lure. A good book cover can make a potential reader walk from aisles away to see what your book is about. And that is why successful authors worldwide pay attention to this aspect.

That is why paying attention to the book cover is as important as any other part of your book. Creating something unique and inspiring will take a lot of time, effort, and dedication. You will surely know once you are there.

If you are done with your manuscript and are concerned about the book cover, here are a few essential tips that can help you make the right call.

    1.      Understand the Elements

A good book cover is not all about choosing the right color scheme and placing eye-catching art. There are many more components that are important to complete a book cover. Here are some of the important parts that play a critical role in completing your book cover.

    1.1.                        Image

Choosing the right picture, art, or graphic illustration for your book can be one of the most important parts of your book. It is the primary thing that will attract your audience. Therefore, you want to make sure that it gets the job done right by reflecting on what’s inside.

Whatever you use as an image of your book must focus on creating a mood and anticipation for the reader. They must get just the right hints to contemplate and understand why it’s the right book and needs to go home with them.

    1.2.                         Typography

There are more than half a million fonts in the world. Each font carries a mood and tone that can help you in developing the perception of a reader. Therefore, it’s very important to choose a font that reflects what’s inside your book.

When you work with professional freelance book cover designers in the UK, they can also help you in tweaking the fonts and making them unique to create an innovative impression. But it’s important to keep it simple enough to be read easily.

    1.3.                        Title

Many authors choose to write the title of their work after they complete their manuscript. However, it is important to start brainstorming early. This practice ensures that you have many brilliant ideas to choose from as the task of writing comes to an end.

Make sure that you make your titles a reflection of what lies inside. The goal is to let the potential reader find what they are looking for and give them a feeling of what the book will be about.

    1.4.                         Panel Copy

The panel copy is usually the top part of the back of your book cover. It gives the potential readers a brief summary of your book. But remember not to reveal too much in this section. Instead, focus on creating intrigue for the reader.

Think of the panel copy of your book as the trailer of a movie. Your panel copy should share enough with the reader so they can ask themselves why your book needs to go home with them.

    1.5.                        Reviews and Endorsements

While a good panel copy is enough for most readers to make their final decision, some readers are interested in knowing the selling points of your book. That is why every book must have a section to share reviews and endorsements.

This section can help establish your credibility in the eyes of the reader. Do not be scared of sharing your small achievements. Every step counts in this section of your book.

    1.6.                        Author’s Bio

Many people are interested in knowing more than what the book is about. They also want to understand the person who wrote this work. Therefore, every book must have a short and sweet author’s bio to connect with the reader.

This section must be as short as three sentences. Make sure to add a link to your author’s website and social media handles in this section to connect with the readers.

    2.      Ask for Input

Every author needs an objective pair of an eye during every step of writing and publishing their book. Things are no different when choosing the right cover. While you may be overwhelmed by so many options, it’s always a good idea to ask your trusted fellow for input.

These fellows can be a part of your literary circle, friends, or family. Just make sure that they have read your book and understand its characters, theme, and tone. This practice can help you determine whether your book cover is sending the right message or not.

You can also survey some people who have no idea what your book is about. Show them the cover and ask them what they think the book will be about. It can help you see if your cover is going in the right direction or if everything needs to go back to step one.

    3.      Use Contrast

A right contrast can help you in catching the attention of a reader from feet away. Even if it’s not the genre they came to explore at the bookstore, the contrast may make them consider a bit of change in their reading routine.

The best part is that it’s not hard to create a contrast, especially when working with professional illustrators. A right contrast can help you make a statement to impress the reader.

The most common contrast is black and white, but of course, you can use dark and light colors from the color wheel to express the tone of your book. An eye-catching contrast can also help you highlight the focal point of your book and let the reader know what their reading journey will feel like.
