NCERT’s decision to make ‘changes’ driven by divisive and partisan agenda: Historians

New Delhi: Around 250 educationists and historians criticised the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) over its decision to revise textbooks. They said that removing the chapters was driven by a divisive and partisan agenda.

The historians demanded NCERT withdraw the decision. Significantly, some sections related to Mughals were removed from the Class 12th History textbooks, and paragraphs that contained information about the ban briefly imposed on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) by the then government after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi were omitted.

Romila Thapar, Jayati Ghosh, Mridula Mukherjee, Apoorvanand, Irfan Habib and Upinder Singh, among others, have started a signature campaign to protest against the decision and for its withdrawal.

On the other hand, the Democratic Teachers Front, an organisation of university-level teachers, said that if ‘WhatsApp University’ is given a free hand to devour Indian schools, colleges and universities, then Indian democracy will be seriously affected.

NCERT said that the change made in school books has not been done with the aim of making anyone happy or angry.

NCERT Chief Dinesh Prasad Saklani told IANS that the changes have been made purely on the basis of expert advice. He said that new books for all classes on the basis of the National Education Policy (NEP) will also be introduced and its work has been completed at the foundation level.

Saklani said that changes were not only made in History books but also in books of other subjects to reduce the burden faced by students. He stated that the changes are not based on any particular person, event, period or institution.

Saklani added that this is not a big change and all of them were made last year, keeping the Covid-19 pandemic in view and the academic loss faced by students worldwide, at all levels.

In such a situation, NCERT decided to revise the course on the basis of experts’ opinions to reduce the burden on students who would return to school after a long time, Saklani concluded.

I apologize, was driven by selfishness: Cong’s Pawan Khera on his 2022 ‘tapasya’ tweet

New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday apologized for his ‘tapasya’ tweet after not getting a Rajya Sabha nomination from his party last year, saying he did so in “selfishness” but has realized his mistake drawing inspiration from Rahul Gandhi who “shuns power” and continues his ‘tapasya’.

Addressing a gathering at the day-long ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ of the Congress at the Rajghat to protest Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha, Khera said, “If you try to murder democracy, Rahul Gandhi will speak, be it from inside Parliament or outside it.”

“You (BJP) are afraid when Rahul Gandhi takes the name of Adani, you will shiver when he will do so on the streets,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi belongs to the family that showed the country the way, Khera said.

Referring to his tweet on May 29 last year after his name did not figure in a list of party’s Rajya Sabha nominees, Khera said, “I want to apologize to all of you, to my leadership that in selfishness, when I did not get a Rajya Sabha berth, I wrote that ‘shayad meri tapasya mein kuch kami reh gayi’. Now I see Rahul Gandhi that he shuns power and still continues his tapasya, what could be bigger than that.”

“I apologize to all of you today. I have got inspiration from Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. It is time to fight, to raise one’s voice, power comes or doesn’t, we will fight and win,” Khera told the gathering with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders on the dais.

Khera was at the centre of a deplaning row recently when he was arrested after being deplaned from an aircraft and arrested for remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark. He was subsequently disqualified from Lok Sabha.

  • Mother of 11 driven out of home by husband for undergoing tubectomy in Odisha

Mother of 11 driven out of home by husband for undergoing tubectomy in Odisha

Keonjhar: A tribal woman who is a mother of 11 children was driven out of the house in Odisha’s Keonjhar district by her husband for undergoing tubectomy operation, a permanent method of contraception, against his wish.

Janaki Dehury, along with some of her children, has been staying outside the house in Dimiria village after being thrown out of the home by her husband three days ago.

The woman decided to go for tubectomy after being convinced by a local ASHA worker about the adverse impact of giving birth to children every year. She has given birth to 11 children in 11 years of her marriage, though one of them died.

“It is very embarrassing to get pregnant every year while my children are growing up. Though many of our village women had gone for the operation, my husband does not understand and he drove me out of the house,” Janaki said.

Her husband Rabi, on the other hand, claimed that his wife has committed a crime by undergoing the sterilisation process.

“We belong to the Bhuyan community. According to the belief in the community, our forefathers will not get water if women undergo the operation. I am strongly opposed to such an operation,” Rabi Dehury said.

ASHA worker Bijaylaxmi Biswal who persuaded Janaki to go for the surgery said that frequent pregnancies are taking a toll on her health.

She has become too weak to handle any more pregnancy, Biswal said adding that it will also be difficult for the family to raise 10 children.

Alleging that Rabi has been threatening to kill her as she convinced her to opt for the surgery, Biswal said he fails to understand the health condition of his wife.

“Not only me, anyone trying to talk to him about the issue becomes his target,” Biswal said.

Meanwhile, the health officer Dr Pritisah Acharya of Telkoi hospital is making efforts to convince Rabi about the situation and accept his wife.
