The Czech Republic have a habit of holding highly ranked sides to 0-0 draws. Last year they did it to the United States and England, the world’s No 1 and 4 respectively. What do Australia have that they – arguably two of the World Cup favourites – do not? Nothing at all before half-time, and after that quite a bit of Hayley Raso, a little bit of Sam Kerr and a record-breaking Clare Polkinghorne, with the help of some well-used substitutes.
What a 4-0 win means for the Matildas in the next six months is completely open to interpretation, so difficult is it to glean meaningful takeaways from friendly tournaments such as the Cup of Nations. This one, being in a World Cup year, has been dressed up as a practice run for the real thing in July. Tony Gustavsson will not stop saying “rehearsal” and “tournament mode” – he may well have been muttering these words into his ever-present headset on the sideline.
The Czech Republic, Spain and Jamaica were all strategically picked for these home matches because their playing styles are similar to those of Australia’s World Cup group-stage opponents the Republic of Ireland, Canada and Nigeria. The defensive-minded, structurally organised Czechs in this scenario are supposed to be Canada. The same Canada to whom Australia lost two friendlies last year.
On the evidence of Thursday night, it is unclear how they will fare against them when it counts. Glass-half-full observers will reference figurative cobwebs being blown out after a few months apart followed by a confidence-boosting second half. The less optimistic will attempt to place this performance into a wider context, in which the Matildas are ranked 12th in the world and face a tricky knockout-stage draw, and point out that some of the Czech Republic’s strongest players did not travel. Others will remember the Socceroos did what nobody believed they could.
The truth is that nobody knows, because recent results have been so capricious. Just when you think Gustavsson will rue the day he threw on a second-string side and copped seven goals against Spain, he oversees convincing wins over Sweden and Denmark. The same occurred at Central Coast Stadium; one begins to analyse an opening 45 minutes during which Australia spent the first half with a hell of a lot of ball but nothing to show for it, and then they go and score four after the break.

What can be written, and then underlined and highlighted, is that Raso is a gun. The winger, quietly spoken off the field, has a brilliant “what do you think you’re looking at?” quality while on it. She threw herself into everything, as part of an interchanging role with Cortnee Vine, in the manner of a player with a point to prove to Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor, who has played her only sparingly off the bench these past few months.
It was apparent when, 20 minutes in, she made a dart for the box and went down under Gabriela Šlajsová’s stuck-out foot, ensuring a yellow card for the latter. Also three minutes into the second half when, with Kerr’s final pass behind her, she managed to contort her body into a shooting position and score the opener – partly thanks to a fortuitous deflection. And again seven minutes later when her header, from one of Steph Catley’s characteristically reliable set pieces, confirmed her brace.
The missing piece of that goal’s puzzle is the player who nodded the ball to Raso from the far post. Clare Hunt was a bolter in this squad, a reward for consistent form for Western Sydney Wanderers, and made herself known from the off. The same can be said for Alex Chidiac, who announced her arrival soon after with two involvements in the build-up to Kerr’s goal. Before the match Gustavsson referenced this, saying: “It’s not just about the starting XI, it’s about the finishing XI as well. What you will see in this tournament is similar to what we’ve seen in the last couple of camps, that hopefully we score a lot of goals when game changes come in.”

This was a night to celebrate for Polkinghorne, too, even though she had been on the field from the start with the armband. The 34-year-old appears very much a defender en route to her fifth World Cup, and scored one of her own just as she became Australia’s most-capped international with 152 appearances, surpassing Cheryl Salisbury.
The Czech Republic did not qualify for the World Cup but they scared Australia’s defence in the first half despite having less than 30% possession. Mackenzie Arnold was called into action to stop a long-range strike from Anna Dlasková, and again after some serious route-one football when the Wanderers’ Jitka Chlastáková ran onto Miroslava Mrázová’s headed flick-on which came straight from a goal kick. In all their defence was stubborn, and in the end the Matildas broke it down. Maybe that is all we need to know.

It can’t be easy keeping count of the number of islands scattered around an area of more than 370,000 square kilometres, in a country that is regularly subjected to volcanic activity and extreme weather.
While Japan has seen the formation of new islands, and the quiet disappearance of another, geographers have said official statistics showing it is made up of around 6,000 islands are way off the mark.
Using digital mapping technology, geographers will soon announce that Japan’s island count is actually double the previously recognised number, according to media reports.
In the first survey of its kind for 35 years, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan has totted up a total of 14,125 islands – 7,273 more than previously thought.
The government body, which is due to release its findings within the next few weeks, said the new information was unlikely to change the size of Japan’s territory or territorial waters, according to the Kyodo news agency.
The authority launched the new study following criticism that the previous data were out of date, meaning the actual number of islands could be dramatically higher.
An MP from the ruling Liberal Democratic party called for a recount, telling parliament in 2021 that “an accurate understanding of the number of islands … was in the national interest”.
In the last survey, released in 1987 by the coast guard, paper maps were used to tally islands – defined as land masses with a circumference of at least 100 metres – resulting in the previously accepted figure of 6,852.
In the most recent study, officials used the same size criterion, but counted islands using digitised maps and cross-referenced the information with past aerial photographs and other data to exclude artificially reclaimed land, Kyodo said.
Some of Japan’s 47 prefectures comprise huge numbers of islands. The northern prefecture of Hokkaido – one of the four main islands, along with Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu – has 1,473, according to the new survey, while Nagasaki in the south-west has 1,479.

Perhaps Farhad Moshiri thought that turning up to watch his team in the flesh for the first time since October 2021 would inspire Everton. Or maybe he just wanted to set his expert gaze over proceedings and judge for himself where Frank Lampard’s team are going wrong.
Either way Everton have spiralled out of control under Moshiri’s abysmal ownership and, for all that the immediate blame for yet another sorry defeat will fall at Lampard’s feet, anyone with any perspective will know that a change of manager is not all it will take to halt this damaged club’s decline.
The chants of “sack the board” that emanated from the away end during the dying stages were a good indication of the mood. Can anything save Everton? Only goal difference is keeping them off the foot of the table and nothing about their performance during this limp defeat to West Ham, whose first league win since 24 October lifted them out of the bottom three, suggested that they will be a Premier League team next season.
At times it seemed Everton were trying to do David Moyes a favour. Their former manager was under extreme pressure and probably would have been sacked if West Ham had lost again. Everton could have made Moyes sweat. The problem was that their failure to defend or attack with any conviction meant that the game was over as a contest by half-time.
This was Moshiri’s first chance to study Lampard team and what he saw was Everton collapse as soon as West Ham lifted their level. Rarely can a team scrapping for survival have defended with such little heart. It was not enough for Lampard to argue that his team had offered some encouraging flashes with some neat approach play. Everton were blunt in the final third and when the blows arrived in a blistering seven-minute spell, Jarrod Bowen twice punishing awful defending, what really stood out was how easy it had been for the hosts.

It was not a flawless display from West Ham. Tougher tests lie in wait, though Moyes was entitled to feel positive. The afternoon had started with an emotional tribute to the late David Gold and Moyes would speak afterwards about the support he has received from his bosses. It was about keeping things in perspective. West Ham are still in the FA Cup, have reached the last 16 of the Europa Conference League and have given Moyes funds to build.
Then again, there is nothing quite like 90 minutes in the company of Everton to lift the mood. The visitors, who matched West Ham’s 3-4-2-1 system, started well. Everton had control early on and West Ham’s inability to seize the initiative had risked irritating the home support, who would even aim a few boos at their team after 25 minutes of sterile football.
Briefly, it was tempting to wonder if Everton’s civil war was ending. After staying away from Goodison Park when Everton lost to Southampton last weekend, Moshiri, Bill Kenwright and their fellow directors were at the London Stadium and would witness a mildly encouraging display at first.
Yet familiar failings plagued Everton, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin isolated and Demarai Gray ineffective. Their best chance fell to Yerry Mina, who scooped over when the game was goalless, and they were shaky as soon after West Ham responded to the crowd’s demands for more urgency.
Saïd Benrahma was soon extending Jordan Pickford. West Ham were making their physicality count and they led when a cross from their left wing-back, Emerson Palmieri, exposed the weaknesses in Everton’s defending.
Kurt Zouma, back from injury and impressing alongside Nayef Aguerd and Angelo Ogbonna at the back, wanted it more than James Tarkowski and Conor Coady. It was too easy for Zouma to flick the ball on and there was too much space for Bowen, who rushed in to guide a simple finish over Pickford.

West Ham are always more dangerous when Bowen, who had not scored a league goal since 9 October, is on song. Also influential was Michail Antonio, who made the second goal when he rumbled past a soft tackle from Tarkowksi. Everton had fallen apart and, with Mina and Amadou Onana standing still, Bowen turned in Antonio’s cross.
The second half was a non-event. Emerson hit the bar, Declan Rice shot just wide and West Ham gave their fans a glimpse of their new signing, Danny Ings. For Lampard, it was another blow. What he would give to have a striker like Ings. He is working with very little. The question now is whether Everton decide to hand the job to someone else.
