‘Govt forcing police to deny hunger strike’, YSRTP to knock court doors

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana party on Monday said that it would knock on court doors to get permission for Telangana Students’ Action for Vacancies and Employment’s (T-SAVE) day-long hunger strike at Indira Park, which was refused by the city police earlier.

Addressing the media after the political affairs committee meeting, YSRTP official spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao said, “This is completely shocking and a sorry picture where YS Sharmila is repeatedly being targeted because chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao is now scared of her fight and commitment towards Telangana”.

The YSRTP spokesperson said that the CM KCR’s treatment of those who raised their voices against his failures and fake promises was atrocious and dictatorial. Rao claimed that the state government is forcing the Hyderabad police to refuse permission to a T-SAVE hunger strike.

He said that the party is tirelessly fighting for the cause and the rights of the unemployed. “Not only is the state government silent and arrogant, but they are also depriving us of our right to fight and protest,” alleged Rao.

He said that it is shameful that a democratic setup does not let the partymen enter their own party office.

“T-SAVE was proposed as a common platform and we had decided to conduct a hunger strike, for a day near Indira Park. This plea was rejected by the city police. Is this fair on KCR who owes his party’s emergence and existence to public movements and people’s protests?” he added.

“Didn’t KCR also conduct protests at Indira Park? Why different rules for Bharat Sashtra Samithi (BRS) and other parties?” added Ramachandra Rao.

He said that the YSRTP will approach the court to obtain permission to conduct the day-long hunger strike. “We have the support of 39 social organisations and other political parties as well. When BRS can carry out dharnas in Delhi, why does it pose obstacles for other parties in Telangana? Isn’t it because they are scared?” said the party spokesperson.

The hunger strike was announced at T-SAVE’s inaugural roundtable meeting on April 10. YSRTP leader Sharmila had announced that her party will stage a hunger strike for a day at Indira Park to “bring this government to task” and put pressure and force it to deliver justice to the youth.

  • The Sharp-Witted Representative Who Opened the Doors of Congress to Young Moms

The Sharp-Witted Representative Who Opened the Doors of Congress to Young Moms

    [ad_1]

    ap870718027

What hard-fought success Schroeder got — “It took nine months to deliver each of my children and nine years to deliver FMLA,” she’d later say — came from “her humanity and her persistence and her humor,” says Ellen Bravo, the former director of 9to5, National Association of Working Women, one of many national groups that worked for the bill’s passage. Year after year, Schroeder leaned into the absurdity of Washington, deploying a brand of witty straight talk that drew attention to her causes, well before social media and viral memes.

“She was able to not just withstand obnoxious attacks on her, but to direct withering responses at the people” who went after her, Bravo says. “She handled them in a way that ate right through the veneer of authority.”

Schroeder was the one who declared that Ronald Reagan had a “Teflon-coated presidency” (an idea that reportedly came to her while frying eggs on a nonstick pan) and dubbed George H.W. Bush and Dan Quayle members of the “lucky sperm club” because they were able to run for office with the benefit of family wealth.

And she faced her own indignities with humor and theatrics. When she won a seat on the House Armed Services Committee early in her tenure, the chair, a Louisiana Democrat named F. Edward Hébert, was angry that she and Ron Dellums, a Black Democrat from California, had been placed on the committee against Hébert’s wishes. He provided only a single chair for the two of them, so Schroeder and Dellums squeezed into it together — “cheek-to-cheek,” she would later write — and sat that way for two years. “Barney Frank used to always say it’s the only half-assed thing I did when I was in Congress, but I’m not sure that’s true,” she quipped to the House historian years later.

Even as Schroeder grew in influence, eventually launching a short-lived bid for president in 1987, she faced doubts and digs about her demeanor: the time she wore a bunny suit to entertain kids in the U.S. Embassy during a 1987 Armed Services trip to China, the fact that she would sometimes sign her name with a smiley-face in the “P.” Some of the biggest scrutiny came when she dropped out of the presidential race and openly cried at the press conference, launching 1,000 think pieces about gender, politics and public norms.

But Schroeder had never feared wearing her motherhood or womanhood on her sleeve, down to bringing her children — and sometimes a pet bunny named Franklin Delano Rabbit — back and forth with her to Denver and on official international trips. “They’d usually spill at least two Cokes and a glass of milk on me before I got off [the ground],” she told the House historian years later. “I was always sticky … People would just be horrified, but that’s how we were.”

That unapologetic approach to parenthood is less rare today, in many public spheres. But there are still plenty of barriers to women with young children running for office, says Liuba Grechen Shirley, who ran for a New York congressional seat in 2018 with two toddlers at home and went on to form the group Vote Mama, which supports young mothers in politics.

And on the congressional level, at least, the family-friendly policies Schroeder championed at the height of her influence have largely been frozen in time. While the FMLA was game-changing 30 years ago, most of its advocates consider it woefully incomplete. As Grechen Shirley and Bravo point out, the law covers only 60 percent of workers, due to restrictions on eligibility. Many eligible people aren’t able to take advantage of it because they can’t afford to take the time off. (Bravo notes that state laws mandating paid sick leave are gaining momentum — they’ve been passed now in 11 states and the District of Columbia.)

Grechen Shirley attributes the lack of progress to a lack of representation. The 118th Congress has a record number of women and yet that’s still only 153 of 540 voting and nonvoting members, or 28 percent of the body. But it’s not just that there aren’t enough women in Congress, Grechen Shirley contends, echoing what Schroeder discovered 50 years ago. It’s that there aren’t enough mothers.

“It’s because our policies were not made by people who have the lived experience. If we want to change the system, we have to change the system-makers,” she says. “So many women will wait until their children are grown before they consider running, so it’s difficult to build that political power to get tenure, to get those leadership positions.”

  • With Bills pending with guv piling up, Telangana knocks on SC’s doors

With Bills pending with guv piling up, Telangana knocks on SC’s doors

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: With Assembly elections in Telangana scheduled later this year and the delay on the part of Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in clearing some Bills passed by the state legislature likely to create hurdles for governance, the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is looking to the Supreme Court to come to its rescue.

The BRS leaders are targeting the Governor for what they call running a parallel system, undermining the people’s elected government.

The stalemate over the pending Bills and the petition filed by the BRS government last month in the Supreme Court has given an unprecedented turn to the rift between the government and the Governor.

The BRS had apparently hoped that with the truce reached last month during the budget session of the state legislature, Soundararajan will reciprocate by approving the Bills, some of which have been pending since September last year.

But with no positive response from the Raj Bhavan, the BRS decided to take the matter to the Supreme Court by filing a special leave petition (SLP).

The government pleaded with the apex court to direct the Governor to fulfil her constitutional obligation by giving assent to the 10 pending Bills.

The SLP mentions that seven of these Bills have been pending with the Raj Bhavan since September last year while the other three were sent to the Governor on February 13 after the budget session of the Assembly ended.

The petition pleaded the Supreme Court to declare the delay by the Governor as ‘illegal’, ‘irregular’ and ‘unconstitutional’.

The SLP said: “The state of Telangana is constrained to move before this court under its extraordinary jurisdiction as conferred under Article 32 of the Constitution of India in view of a very frequent constitutional impasse created on account of the refusal of the Governor of the State of Telangana to act on several Bills passed by the state legislature. These Bills are pending since September 14, 2022, till date for the assent of the Governor.”

The petition went on the say: “It is respectfully submitted that the Constitution cannot be kept static in the matter of legislative actions of the State and by reason of the Bills kept pending, without any legitimate reasons, results in chaotic situations, nothing short of creating lawlessness and in all sobriety, the Hon’ble Governor should have acted in discharge of the constitutional mandate of assenting to the Bills contemplated under the constitutional scheme.

“There is no justifiable reason to resort to any other step other than assenting to the Bills as all the Bills conform to the constitutional mandate as to the legislative competence or otherwise.”

The state government mentioned the Samsher Singh Vs State of Punjab case where the top court had said that the Constitution did not envisage the provision of “a parallel administration by allowing the Governor to go against the advice of the Council of Ministers”.

It also said that Article 200 does not confer any independent discretion on the Governor as is clear from the discussion of the Constituent Assembly.

The state government further argued that the matter assumes unprecedented significance and any further delay may lead to very unpleasant situations, ultimately affecting the governance and heavily inconveniencing the general public as a result.

The state Assembly had passed seven Bills during the session held on September 12 and 13. The Governor passed only the GST (Amendment) Bill.

The bills pending with the Raj Bhavan are — Azamabad Industrial Area (Termination and Regulation of Leases) (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Telangana Municipal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Telangana Public Employment (Regulation of Age of Superannuation) (Amendment) Bill, 2022; University of Forestry Telangana Bill, 2022; Telangana Universities Common Recruitment Board Bill, 2022; Telangana Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Telangana State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (Amendment) Bill, 2023; Telangana Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2023; and Telangana Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

With the municipal laws Bill pending, the government is worried over party leaders moving a no-confidence motion against the chairpersons of the civic bodies.

Legal experts said the state government can’t do anything unless the Governor returns the Bills to it. If the Bills are returned, the state government has powers to send them again for approval which cannot be denied by the Governor.

As the SLP in the Supreme Court is filed in the name of Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, the Governor trained guns on her.

Soundararajan, who kicked up rows by participating in debates in television channels to target the BRS government, took to Twitter to hit out at the Chief Secretary.

“Dear Telangana CS Raj Bhavan is nearer than Delhi. Assuming office as CS you didn’t find time to visit Raj Bhavan officially. No protocol! No courtesy even for courtesy call. Friendly official visits and interactions would have been more helpful which you Don’t even intend,” Soundararajan tweeted.

Santhi Kumari had assumed office as Chief Secretary on January 11 and the Governor pulled her up for not finding time to visit the Raj Bhavan officially.

However, the BRS leaders launched a counter attack and reminded the Governor that the Chief Secretary had visited the Raj Bhavan twice after assuming office.

The state government also countered the Governor’s argument that it did not clarify her doubts on Bills. It informed the Supreme Court that Education Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy had met the Governor on November 10, 2022, and the Governor was apprised of the necessity of introducing the Bills and the urgency was explained.

On January 30, Legislative Affairs Minister S. Prashanth Reddy had met the Governor and fervently requested to consider granting assent to the Bills as the delays in the matter of assent seriously hurts the very objective of the pending Bills.

In November last year, the Governor had dismissed the allegations levelled by BRS that her office was sitting on some Bills forwarded by the state government for her assent. She had stated that she is taking time for assessing and analysing the Bills before giving her consent.

BRS is now hoping for a relief from the Supreme Court. Political observers say the ruling party may also look to draw political mileage from the delay in clearing the pending bills.

The ruling party leaders are targeting the Governor for ‘acting like a BJP leader’. BRS sees the Governor’s actions as part of the attempts by the BJP government at the Centre to create hurdles in the path of development of Telangana.

Irrespective of the Supreme Court’s judgement, the BRS is likely to politically cash in on the situation by taking the issue to the public ahead of the polls scheduled towards the end of this year.

Infosys shows exit doors to freshers in Bengaluru

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: After corporate giant Wipro showed the exit door to hundreds of freshers who failed to pass the tests, it is the turn of Infosys to sack the probationers for failing to prove their credentials in the internal assessments.

Infosys is allegedly letting go of hundreds of employees, who are at the fag end of their training and failed the internal assessment tests. The new recruits will have to undergo comprehensive training before they are added into various teams for full-fledged work.

Senior employees in the IT Company stated on condition of anonymity that though there is economic slowdown and recession, the companies are focusing more on quality and productivity. Therefore, average talent is not preferred under the circumstances.

“The corona pandemic in the last two years has affected the education, quality of students and their skillsets. There is a clear lack regarding teaching and the honing of skills. Many graduates, who passed out in the last two years, are not in a position to prove themselves and there is extreme pressure on the trainees,” they explain.

Sources explained that the freshers are provided with two chances to clear their assessment. If they fail, they will not be onboarded. However, the freshers who have been sacked from Infosys maintained that members of the teams which did not get projects are being asked to go and those with projects are not touched.

Tech industry insiders are of the opinion that the phase is going to last for a while and pressure on industry will be there till 2024. The freshers won’t enjoy the halcyon days, when the job market was hot during the pandemic.

“It is evident that the global economic crisis is real as we can see big companies such as Google and Amazon laying off people. It is going to last for a while. So, I believe that the crisis will remain in the entire 2023 and even probably the first quarter of 2024. It will eventually subside and we all will come back to normalcy. However, it is going to take some time,” stated Sumanth Prabhu, Co-Founder and CEO, Ulipsu.

“My suggestion for people looking for jobs or the ones who are employed is that getting a job now is precious or they should hold onto the job that they currently have. It’s a good thing that the employees are getting retained and valued. If they are valued, they should work hard to ensure that the value is reciprocated,” he said.

“Also, it is the right time for businesses to cut down costs and be frugal. The global economic crisis is something that teaches all companies that we should not hire unnecessarily and should not commit to costs that are unnecessary or irrelevant. Companies have to lay off during these kinds of crises. So, it is better to hire wisely than to hire illogically and fire people,” Sumanth Prabhu explained.

IT giant Wipro has laid off more than 400 fresher employees for poor performance in internal assessment tests in January. The company had issued termination letters to all the employees and stated that despite the adequate training, the candidates have failed to perform.

The termination letter maintained that the employees are liable to pay Rs 75,000 of training cost which company has spent on them. But, the amount is being waived off.

Commenting on the development, Wipro had clarified that, Wipro takes pride in holding itself to the highest standards. As per the standards the aim is set of all. From every entry level employee it is expected to have a certain level of proficiency in their designated area of work. The evaluation process includes to align employees with the requirements of clients and the business objectives of the organisation.
