I don’t have a house, says Rahul Gandhi; BJP takes a dig

    [ad_1]

Nava Raipur: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said he has never owned a house and noted that this experience had helped him “change” his Bharat Jodo Yatra and connect with the people.

Addressing the Congress plenary session in Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Gandhi said he wanted everyone who joined the Yatra to feel that they were coming home.

He recalled the incident in 1977 when his family was preparing to leave their government accommodation.

“There was a strange atmosphere in the house. I went to mummy and asked her what happened. Ma told me that we are leaving the house.

“Till that time I used to think it was our house. So I asked my mother why we are leaving our house. Then my mom told me for the first time that it was not our house, but the government’s and we have to leave it now,” the Congress leader said.

Rahul Gandhi said he asked his mother Sonia Gandhi where they would go next. “‘Nahi maloom’ (don’t know) my mother said. I was taken aback. I used to think it was our house.

“52 years and I still don’t have a house. Our family house is in Allahabad and that is also not ours. I live at 12, Tughaq Lane but that is not my house,” he said.

Gandhi then spoke about his Yatra that was launched on September 7 last year in Kanyakumari, traversing 12 states and two Union Territories, and concluded in Kashmir in January-end .

“When I moved from Kanyakumari, I asked myself what is my responsibility… I came up with an idea… I told my people this 20-25 ft area around me is going to be my house for the next four months. This house will move with me.

“Whoever comes here- be it rich or poor, elderly or young, from whichever religion or state or from abroad or even an animal…. they should feel like they have come home..and while leaving, they should feel they are leaving their home… The day I did it, the Yatra changed,” Gandhi said.

The BJP, however, took a swipe at Gandhi, saying his remarks show the “sense of entitlement” in the Gandhi family as it enjoys “responsibility without power”.

“Rahul ji used to think that all the houses and cars he was using belonged to him. If you feel that the government’s house is your house, who can evict us – this is called the sense of entitlement,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters.

He said Gandhi undertook his Yatra only now, but BJP’s two prime ministers spent their life crisscrossing the country and learning about it as ‘pracharaks’.

“After 52 years of age, he is thinking what should be his responsibility… after giving up the Congress presidentship… Your motto and that of the Gandhi family is one – power without responsibility,” Patra said.

He said Mallikarjun Kharge is the Congress president, but the whole party plenary is focused on the members of the Gandhi family.

‘Don’t think Biharis as fools’, Tejashwi targets BJP at mega rally

    [ad_1]

Patna: The Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, on Saturday targeted the BJP during a mega rally of the Mahagathbandhan in Purnia.

“We are Biharis and don’t think of us as fools (Ham Log Bihari Hai, Hamko Burbak Mat Samjhiye),” Tejashwi said while taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the promises he had made before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

It was a show of strength for the Mahagathbandhan on Saturday as each and every MLA, MP and minister were present at the rally.

“During a rally at this same venue in 2014, Narendra Modi had promised to give special status to Bihar. But it turned into a ‘jumla’. Don’t assume that we Biharis are fools. We understand everything. The Centre had said that the income of the farmers would double by 2022, but what happened to that promise? What happened to the promise of concrete houses for every countryman? Please tell us one promise made by the Centre which has been fulfilled,” Tejashwi said.

“What was there for Bihar in the Union Budget this year? Zero. It is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who is developing Bihar in his own capacity,” the RJD leader said.

“BJP does not have any leader, all of them are dealers. They are only trying to divide the society on religious lines. I’m the son of Lalu Prasad, who never compromised with the communal forces in his entire life. I will not bend before these forces,” Tejashwi said.

  • John Kirby: Don’t be surprised by China’s balloon ‘bluster’

John Kirby: Don’t be surprised by China’s balloon ‘bluster’

    [ad_1]

Wang has heavily criticized the Biden administration shooting down the Chinese spy balloon as a “weak” and “near-hysterical” response that amounted to an “excessive use of force.”

The discussion between the two leaders was “a forthright, very candid exchange” which “laid bare our deep concerns about what they did,” Kirby told Fox host Shannon Bream.

He maintained that the manner in which the Chinese balloon was shot down allowed the U.S. to collect its debris.

“Now we have that debris, and we’re going to exploit that debris. We’re going to learn more about this system,” Kirby said.

The U.S. downed the surveillance balloon off the coast of the Carolinas earlier this month, after it crossed the continent over the course of a week.

“We acted accordingly, and believe me, the message was clearly sent to China this is unacceptable,” Kirby said Sunday.

Since then, the administration has directed three additional objects to be shot down, but those are now believed to have been benign, Kirby said earlier this week. “Nothing right now suggests that they were related to China’s spy balloon program or that they were surveillance vehicles from any other country,” President Joe Biden added on Thursday.

  • You don’t have to be young to build muscle: how women are breaking fitness taboos

You don’t have to be young to build muscle: how women are breaking fitness taboos

    [ad_1]

When 50-year-old Anna Jenkins, the founder of We Are Fit Attitude (Wafa), a woman-only health and fitness club, looked online for images of older women exercising, she was irritated by the pitiful size of the weights: the stock image is of a woman with grey hair lifting a 1kg weight, as if doing so were some kind of milestone. My personal bugbears are the photos in which there is a personal trainer with an expression of infinite patience next to the older woman, as if the latter is weak and half witted.

Stock photos are the internet’s idea of what the world should look like, sets of generic images intended to illustrate articles and advertising, often revealing more worldview than they probably set out to. There are famously a lot of photos of white women laughing near salad, meant for healthy eating content, but also reinforcing inane cheer and self-denial as cornerstones of femininity. If fitness imagery of the young is all about aspiration – six packs, muscle definition and impossible body fat percentages – fitness imagery of older people is almost anti-aspirational. Its message is: “You probably can’t do anything at all, but look over here, there’s a lady managing this tiny thing.”

Jenkins runs the Wafa classes remotely and in person for women ranging from their late 30s to their mid-70s. One Saturday, at a class in Merton, south London, they decided to create a new set of photos, repopulate the ecosystem of stock photographs, so that when you search for “older women exercising”, you will be able to see what that really looks like. “These are proper weights,” says Annette Hinds, 60. “We’re not pussyfooting about.”

Lifting with attitude … women in one of Anna Jenkins’ classes.

Jenkins went into group work and coaching from personal training because she had noticed that, in the gym: “Women would go straight to the cardio machine because they knew how it worked. It’s a frightening environment when you think you don’t belong, when you’re unhappy in your body shape. But they didn’t need more cardio – at 45-plus your body needs strength work. Especially during the menopause. It’s just a fact.”

As your bones lose density, the only way you will protect them is by keeping your muscle mass; building strength in middle age is part of what will define the shape and tempo of your old age. But as Glenda Cooper, 51, who usually does this class remotely five times a week, says, there is more to it than that. “Women at this time of life have parents we’re caring for. I’ve got two kids. You don’t want to take up too much space, you feel invisible anyway, you don’t make time for yourself. It’s so important to have a sense of your own strength, which I think is absent from the rest of our lives.”

The photographer documenting today’s class, Jason Alfred-Palmer, is the son of one of the Wafa women, Hilary Palmer, 61. Methodically, unobtrusively, he catches the kettlebell swings, the slam balls in action, the planks, the radically enthusiastic press-ups. There is another cliche that is unlikely to survive this photoshoot: that middle-aged women are somehow less competitive than everyone else, happy to retreat to the sidelines.

Sure, it is extremely comradely. “Nobody here is going to tease me if I get out of step,” says 76-year-old Linda Redford, who has a really friendly manner and impressive upper-body strength. But there are all these things you are supposed to lose interest in, in your dusk to twilight years – punching things, boasting gleefully, winning. “All my peers are having hip operations and their knees are going; they all make a noise when they get out of a chair. I don’t want to be like that,” Redford says.

Alfred-Palmer shoots Yvonne Gabriel, 54, at the class.

The atmosphere is fierce: as Lorraine Turner, 59, says: “I never used to think I was competitive, but later in life, I’ve realised that I am. I get a lot out of it if I push myself more.” Karen Silvestri, 60, remarks archly: “My husband’s a chef so I eat a lot and drink a lot. I still manage to retain this normal shape.”

Palmer’s daughter paid her a compliment on her butt the other day: “She said it wasn’t flat like a lot of women my age.” Downward comparison is very motivating, and it is also fun to watch when people are so unabashed about it.

“We’re a funny bunch, women, aren’t we?” Teresa Klasener, 61, says. She was very active until she got rheumatoid arthritis, then it all hit the skids until she started with Wafa two years ago. “We have all these mental blocks, we don’t prioritise ourselves, but once we’re in a group, we’ll fly.”

Jenkins says: “When I first became a personal trainer, I’d see a lot of women who were yo-yo dieters, and it was often because they were trying to be skinnier than their bodies were meant to be. I think exercise makes you confident in your shape as it is.” That might be the ultimate break with the visual norms of the fitness industry, that these are images of strength and exertion for their own sake, not for how they’ll make you look in spaghetti straps.

“I never knew what people were talking about with the endorphin thing,” Redford says. “And now, I do feel a sense of joy and self-congratulation, knowing that I just fucking went for it.”

  • Harris on China balloon episode: I don’t think it impacts our relations

Harris on China balloon episode: I don’t think it impacts our relations

    [ad_1]

    gettyimages 1412733374

Harris noted that she said as much to Chinese President Xi Jinping when they met briefly in November at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bangkok. “Everything that has happened in the last week and a half is, we believe, very consistent with our stated approach,” she said.

The intrusion into U.S. airspace caused immediate anger and outrage throughout Washington, D.C., with members of both parties criticizing the Biden administration for failing to shoot down the balloon earlier. The White House says they waited until the balloon was safely away from civilians, though it has since taken aggressive action to shoot down other objects floating above U.S. territory. At this point, the administration isn’t tying those additional objects to the Chinese government.

Harris conducted the interview roughly 24 hours before she was scheduled to depart Washington to lead the U.S. delegation at the Munich Security Conference. China’s top diplomat will be in attendance but Harris said there was nothing scheduled between her and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Reuters reported Monday that Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who will also be attending the conference, is considering a meeting with his counterpart.

This will be Harris’ second time attending the confab of global leaders and allies on behalf of the administration and her fourth trip to Europe since Russia invaded Ukraine. Her first visit last year came just days before the war began. In her meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Harris promised full support from the United States and encouraged him to prepare for a full-scale invasion.

Nearly a year later, Harris returns aiming to push the western alliance to sustain its stance against Russia despite the impact the invasion has had on the world economy and energy security in Europe.

“There is an enduring commitment on behalf of the alliance, but it’s not without sacrifice that each country is doing that,” Harris said. “And that’s to be applauded, which is a nation standing in defense of certain foundational principles when the going gets tough.”

A White House official said Harris’ tentative schedule in Munich includes meetings with leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland and Sweden, and that “more engagements are possible.” Harris also is scheduled to address the conference in a speech Saturday.

The vice president said she will be reassuring both the alliance and Ukraine of the U.S. commitment as the war enters its second year. Her stop in Munich will be followed by a visit from President Joe Biden to nearby Poland.

But there are questions about whether the White House’s hands will be tied back home. Congressional Republicans have demanded that any future aid to Ukraine be accompanied by stringent new layers of oversight, if passed at all.

Harris said she believed the GOP posture was overstated if not bluster.

One thing is rhetoric at the press conference,” she said. “But the other thing is how they’ve been voting and they’ve been voting to support the assistance that we have been as a nation giving the Ukrainian people.”

A myriad of other international issues will be occurring in the backdrop of the Munich conference. Among the thorniest for the White House is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned overhaul of his country’s judicial system to shift power away from its supreme court.

The move has been criticized by members of the Israeli government, including President Isaac Herzog, who in recent televised remarks said a “powder keg is about to explode” as thousands of Netanyahu’s opponents have taken to the streets in protest.

Harris offered a measured critique of the judicial reform as well, placing it in the context of democratic backsliding.

“As the president has said, an independent judiciary is foundational for a democracy,” she said. “And I think that there is no question that we need to make sure that that is supported in terms of what we talk about [and] in terms of our values.”

In the brief phone interview, Harris also addressed domestic matters, including concerns from members of her own party over the prospect of another Biden-Harris ticket. Biden is expected to announce his decision on a reelection bid in the coming weeks, amid polls that show most Democrats have doubts about the two taking on whomever the Republican nominee will be.

“We were in Philadelphia recently and hundreds of people were shouting their support of the work that our administration has had and the success that our administration has accomplished and their desire to see it keep going,” Harris said. “So I have seen just in terms of, in real life, real people being very supportive of the work that is happening. When I look at the midterms and how people voted, that gives me further objective and empirical evidence of this point.”

Don’t turn House into a municipal corporation, Speaker tells warring TMC, BJP MPs

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday admonished Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP MP Saumitra Khan after they entered into a war of words, asking them not to convert the House into a “municipal corporation”.

The drama started when Khan sought to know during Question Hour as to how many unorganised sector workers from West Bengal had registered with the e-Shram portal of the Labour Ministry, as he said that many such workers have been agitating and complaining about lack of payment of dearness allowance.

While Labour Minister Bhupender Yadav replied to the BJP MP’s question, Banerjee objected by saying that the matter raised by Khan was subjudice in the Supreme Court and was not part of the original question.

When Birla asked Banerjee to sit down, Khan started shouting from his seat and soon both the MPs engaged in a war of words, with the Trinamool MP losing his cool and asking Khan to “shut up”.

At this point, there was commotion in the House as lawmakers from both sides started a ruckus, forcing Birla to say “don’t turn the House into a municipal corporation”.
