The only Australian with a role in King Charles’ coronation is from Wangaratta – where most people don’t know him

    [ad_1]

The only Australian to play an official role in the coronation of King Charles III lives in the small Victorian town of Wangaratta – but most in the town have never heard of him.

Simon Abney-Hastings, the 15th Earl of Loudon, is one of 13 people appointed to play a ceremonial role at the 6 May ceremony.

In a statement provided to some media outlets, his private secretary, Terence Guthridge, said Abney-Hastings was “delighted” to have been invited to be the bearer of the great golden spurs, a part of the ceremony dating back to the coronation of Richard I (Richard the Lionheart), in 1189.

The mayor of the Rural City of Wangaratta, Dean Rees, learned of Abney-Hastings only recently, from media reports. Journalists from Melbourne have been scouting around the town trying to catch a glimpse of the royal, and his face was on the front page of the local independent newspaper, the Wangaratta Chronicle, on Friday.

“We certainly did not know that we had an earl – what is he, the 15th Earl of Loudon?” Rees told Guardian Australia. “He keeps a very low profile.”

Wangaratta, famously described as a ‘horrible town’ by Nick Cave

Wangaratta is not the easiest town in which to keep a low profile: it has just under 30,000 residents and only three supermarkets. Shoppers trying to navigate the grocery aisles at Woolworths on Saturday morning have to dodge around clusters of people who have stopped for a chat.

The north-east Victorian town had one of the highest growth rates in the state in 2021, due in part to mass regional migration during Melbourne’s extended Covid lockdowns. In the past decade it has undergone a rebranding from an industrial town, powered by employers such as Bruck Textiles, which collapsed in 2014, to a gateway to the Milawa and King Valley wine and food regions.

Rees said Abney-Hastings clearly valued his privacy “and we have got to respect his wishes”.

“He is a resident of Wangaratta and we are very proud to have him,” he said. “I hope he doesn’t have too many issues from the media as to his privacy.”

Abney-Hastings’ desire for privacy does not extend to Facebook, where he regularly updates his 991 followers about the Melbourne Highland Games and Celtic Festival, of of which he is a patron.

He also posted that he was “delighted and sincerely honoured to accept the invitation by the Crown to perform the Bearer of the Great Golden Spurs”.

The gold spurs feature a Tudor rose and a red velvet covered strap, and symbolise knighthood. The set currently in circulation was made in 1661 for Charles II. They were traditionally fastened to the sovereign’s feet but are now just held up to their ankles, then placed on the altar.

The 48-year-old is a direct descendent of George Plantagenet, the brother of Edward IV and Richard III, through his grandmother, Barbara Huddleston Abney-Hastings. Some historians have claimed that Edward was illegitimate and that George, as the eldest legitimate son, should have inherited. In 2004, a Channel 4 documentary entitled Britain’s Real Monarch asserted that Michael Abney-Hastings, the current earl’s father, was, as George Plantagenet’s eldest heir, the rightful king of England.

The Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, visits a winery near his home town during last year’s Victorian election campaign.

In a statement to Nine Newspapers, Guthridge acknowledged the claim, saying that “as a direct descendant of George Plantagenet, Simon Abney-Hastings has a right to inherit the throne of England”. But he added that the earl was a loyal supporter of the late Queen and her eldest son and had no intention of asserting himself.

“Indeed, they exchange birthday or Christmas cards each year,” the statement said.

But a claim to the English throne is not enough to make him one of Wangaratta’s most famous residents. That honour, says Rees, is a three-way tie between Nick Cave, who was expelled from Wangaratta high school at the age of 13 and later described it as a “horrible town” that inspired his bleak artistic vision; the Olympic cyclist Dean Woods, who won gold in the team pursuit at Los Angeles in 1984 and whose name and achievements adorn signs welcoming visitors to the town; and the current Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews.

Rex Hartwig, a two-time Wimbledon doubles champion who retired to a property on the outskirts of town, and the bushranger Ned Kelly, who did not even live in Wangaratta but hid out in the Warby Ranges and was arrested in the nearby village of Glenrowan, also rank before Abney-Hastings in a list of Wangaratta royalty.

A ceremonial role in the coronation is not likely to bump him up the list, Rees said.

“He might get some photos over there with the king that might make it into the paper, and it will all slow down from there,” he said.

Don’t give more than 40 seats to BJP: Rahul appeals to Karnataka voters

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday appealed to the voters of the poll-bound state of Karnataka to not give more than 40 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming May 10 assembly elections.

Addressing a public rally at Hangal town in Haveri district, the former Congress president requested the people to give at least 150 seats to Congress, “otherwise the BJP will again try to form a government”.

“Don’t give more than 40 seats to them,” he reiterated.

    MS Education Academy

Rahul Gandhi said even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks of corruption, “he shares the stage with corrupt leaders who take 40 per cent commission”.

“This shows that he doesn’t fight against corruption,” he said.

“Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar was denied a ticket by the BJP as he didn’t indulge in corruption, and as he did not take 40 per cent commission,” the Congress leader said.

He further said: “An MLA’s son was caught red-handed in the Mysore Sandal Soap scam. There were many other scams, like Police Sub-Inspector recruitment scam, Assistant professor scam, Assistant Engineer job scam, etc. BJP formed the previous government by ‘stealing’ MLAs with money. It was a stolen government.”

“BJP leaders talk of Basavanna ji, they bow down before him but work against his teachings. The BJP makes one community fight against another. BJP leaders don’t follow Basavanna ji’s ideals, they help 2-3 billionaires but don’t care about problems of farmers and labourers,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“BJP took 40 per cent commission from people in every contract in the last 5 years. Now, we (Congress) want to do something for the people,” he added.

He further said: “We make four promises to the poor people of Karnataka — ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme in which every woman head of a household will get Rs 2,000 a month; ‘Gruha Jyoti’ scheme in which 200 units of free electricity will be given per month to every family; ‘Anna Bhagya’ scheme in which 10 kg free rice will be given to BPL families per month, and ‘Yuva Nidhi’ scheme in which Rs 3,000 per month will be given to every graduate and Rs 1,500 per month will be given to every diploma holder. And this will be done on the very first day. They took a 40 per cent commission. We will fulfil these 4 promises.”

Don’t test our patience: Hyderabad police association warns Sharmila

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Police Officers Association has condemned the YSR Telangana Party chief Y S Sharmila over her assault on police personnel earlier in the day while she was being detained by the Telangana police on Monday.

In a press release, Vijayamma and the Hyderabad City Police Officers’ Association president Nalla Shankar Reddy condemned Sharmila’s behaviour towards police personnel.

“We strongly condemn Sharmila’s behaviour, rudeness and assaulting the police. Such actions should not test the police’s patience by hurting their self-esteem. In the recent past, some political leaders with positions of power have, in the past, tried to undermine the morale of the police which such cheap measures,” the statement read.

    MS Education Academy

The Telangana Police has the highest recognition in the country in monitoring peace and security in society and controlling crime, the press release ended.

Following the assault, Y S Sharmila was arrested on a complaint by a sub-inspector. Her two drivers were also booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police Joel Davis said police had gone to Sharmila’s house following information that she was going to the office of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) question paper leak. Since there was no permission for Sharmila’s visit to the SIT office, the police personnel were trying to explain the same to her but she assaulted police personnel.

The driver of Sharmila’s car also did not stop the car on the order of the police and hit them, injuring constable Giribabu.

Sharmila’s husband Anil Kumar later went to Jubilee Hills police station and met her.

PM and BJP leaders speak about Basavanna, but don’t follow his teachings: Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Vijayapura: Invoking 12th century social reformer Basavanna on his birth anniversary, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ruling BJP leaders only spoke about the Lingayat philosopher in their speeches but didn’t follow his teachings.

Calling the BJP government in Karnataka the “most corrupt in the country”, he declared that Congress would win 150 seats in Karnataka out of the total 224 in the May 10 Assembly polls, while the “40 per cent BJP government” would get only 40 seats. He was referring to complaints from contractors that the BJP government in the state sought had allegedly sought 40 per cent commission from them for government contracts.

“Basavanna had said don’t fear, speak out truth. If we see today, there is BJP and RSS’ ideology which is creating an atmosphere of hatred and violence in the country. Prime Minister and BJP leaders speak about Basavanna, but don’t follow his teachings,” Gandhi said.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a public meeting here, he said Basavanna had spoken about helping the weaker sections of society, he did not say “help the billionaires”.

“I have read about Basavanna’s teachings. He has nowhere written that ‘get the country’s wealth to Adani’. I spoke in Parliament house, I asked the Prime Minister as to what was his relationship with Adani? ‘The country’s entire wealth, ports and airports are being given to Adani; what’s your relationship?’,” he said.

Claiming that his microphone was first switched off in Parliament for asking those questions, Gandhi said his speech was then removed from Parliament records, and at the end he himself was removed from the Lok Sabha.

“They think that the truth can only be spoken in Lok Sabha, but it can be spoken anywhere, even here,” he said.

AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, Karnataka Congress campaign committee chief M B Patil and KPCC working president Satish Jarkiholi, were among those present.

Gandhi was speaking after holding a massive road show from Shivaji Circle to Kanakadasa Circle, amid the sound of drum beats, in which large crowds of people took part.

Gandhi, earlier today began his two-day visit to poll-bound Karnataka from Kudala Sangama, where he offered obeisance to Basaveshwara, also known as Basavanna, on his birth anniversary, celebrated as Basava Jayanti. Basavanna is the founder of the Lingayat sect.

This visit of Gandhi is seen as an attempt by the Congress to bolster Lingayat outreach ahead of the May 10 Assembly polls. Lingayats are a dominant community constituting about 17 per cent of the State’s population, largely seen as the ruling BJP’s vote bank.

  • I don’t know how it happened, but it has happened: KL Rahul

I don’t know how it happened, but it has happened: KL Rahul

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: His baffling batting approach led to his team’s seven-run loss against Gujarat Titans but Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul on Saturday refused to take the blame, saying “these things happen in cricket and we will have to take it on the chin”.

Chasing 136 for a win on a sluggish pitch, LSG were cruising along at 105 for 1 after 14 overs with 31 needed off 36 deliveries but ended at 128 for 7 from 20 overs.

Rahul (68 off 61 balls) reached to his 50 off 33 balls but then consumed another 28 deliveries for his 18 before he was out in the final over from which LSG needed 12.

    MS Education Academy

“I don’t know how it happened, but it has happened. I can’t put a finger on where it went wrong, but we lost two points today, this is cricket,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation.

“We started well with the bat, but these things happen, we’ll have to take it on the chin.”

Rahul, however, conceded that the batters should have taken a few more chances as they had wickets in hand.

“We were well ahead in the game and I wasn’t really trying to bat deep, I still wanted to play my shots, take on the bowlers, but they bowled well in that 2-3 over period, by Noor and Jayant.

“We perhaps should have taken a few more chances with wickets in hand. They bowled decently. Not an easy wicket for new batters to come in. Set batters need to finish the game.

“We missed some boundary opportunities in the end. The pressure got to us in the last 3-4 overs, we played well until then. But we should have got it done.”

He praised his bowlers for restricting GT to 135 for 6.

“I thought we were brilliant with the ball, 135 was 10 runs under par, the bowling was exceptional.

“But still a long way to go, 8 points off 7 games, we were on the wrong side of the result today.”

Hardik Pandya said a win like this can boost the team’s confidence.

“After the two games we lost, this seems like god is telling us I am not always going to take from you, I will give to you too,” he said.

“The way the environment changed when we got wickets, the belief we had, was wonderful to watch. In a tournament like this, one loss can break you, but such a win can do the opposite.”

Talking about the team strategy, he said, “At best, we could have score 10 more runs. That’s how the wicket was.

“During the strategic timeout, we spoke about the set batter batting longer because the new batter was going to find it difficult.”

Asked at what stage he thought his side could win, Pandya said, “When there was 30 required off 30, I felt they were ahead. We started sniffing something when it came down to 27 off 4 overs.

“A run a ball off 10 overs is different, but when it comes down to 24 off 24, you know a mistake can cost you the game. That’s when the game changes.”

Asked why he gave the ball to Mohit Sharma to defend 12 runs in the final over, he said, “The amount of cricket Mohit has played, I didn’t need to tell him anything. The calmness, planning and execution he showed, it was tremendous.

“At same time, Shami showed his experience. Mohit and Shami were tremendous. Special mention to Jayant as well, playing after such a long time. Obviously Noor has some talent.”

Mohit, on his part, said he did not try anything special.

“Nothing special, everything’s normal, as usual. I think I have been consistent. You need to focus and prepare in the same manner each and every time, that helps.

“You need to keep practising, just stick to the basics and try not to overthink. That belief factor was always there. Nehra adviced us to stick to our plans honestly. I tried to focus on executing my plans. Also tried that the batters couldn’t read what I was trying to bowl.”

He said the team never lost the belief and captain Hardik Pandya kept telling the players from the beginning that they were winning the match.

Srinagar: National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abullah Saturday asked the government to stop ‘harassing’ people in Poonch for their failures.

He said innocent people should not be harassed during the operation that has been started in Poonch district of Jammu region.

Pertinently, five Indian soldiers were killed in a militant attack in Poonch two days back. After the attack government forces have launched a massive search operation.

Farooq Abdullah after offering  Eid prayers at Hazratbal Srinagar told reporters that innocent people are being arrested and then tortured. “It is their (govt’s) fault. Don’t arrest innocent people in Poonch. It should be stopped,” he said.

In response to a question, Farooq Abdullah expressed regret for not allowing Eid prayers at historic Jamia Masjid.

“It shouldn’t have happened at first place. Even Mirwaiz Umar Farooq should be released and allowed to give sermons from the pulpit so that people can benefit from his sermons,” Farooq Abdullah said. [KNT]

Srinagar: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said security forces should not harass innocent people during their operation against the perpetrators of the Poonch terror attack that killed five Indian Army soldiers.

“They have started operation in Pooch. They should not arrest innocent people. It was their mistake, they should not harass innocent people. It is wrong and it should be avoided, ” Abdullah told reporters after offering Eid prayers at the Hazratbal shrine here.

Five Army personnel were killed and another was seriously injured after their vehicle was attacked by terrorists in Poonch district Thursday. The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

Abdullah also expressed surprise that Eid prayers were not allowed at the Jamia Masjid.

“It is unfortunate that Eid prayers were not allowed at Jamia Masjid. I thought they were allowing the prayers there. The government is saying that situation is peaceful. Then why are they not allowing the prayers,” he said.

The former chief minister said Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is the chief priest of Kashmir, should have been allowed to take part in the prayers.

  • The Kennedy campaign the Kennedys don’t want to see

The Kennedy campaign the Kennedys don’t want to see

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 kennedy 92685

“Most American families, they never have any differences with each other. So when it happens with a family, it’s really huge news, like, everywhere,” the now-candidate Kennedy said to laughter from a standing-room crowd that packed the ballroom of the Boston Park Plaza hotel to see him.

“I have no ill will” toward any of them, he added.

Kennedy, if nothing else, is aware of the value of the family brand. Now 69, he opined at length about his famous forbearers, flashing old photos and brandishing his family name in one of his Uncle Ted’s old fundraising haunts as he peddled the type of anti-vaccine rhetoric his living relatives have disavowed. He drew parallels to his father in one breath and blasted government censorship and “corporate” media misinformation in another. He largely steered clear of Biden, who’s spoken at length of his deep regard for the Kennedy family and modeled his “cancer moonshot” after JFK’s initiative.

Kennedy said he chose Boston for his launch because of the time he spent here as a kid, but also because Massachusetts is Kennedy country.

Yet top Democratic operatives here, many of whom have worked for at least one Kennedy and in some cases remain close to the family, have publicly and privately pilloried him as a disgrace to his family whose views stand at odds with their values. His rally drew none of the state’s leading Democratic politicians.

“It’s a disservice to their long service and success in politics and antithetical to everything they stood for,” Boston-based Democratic consultant Mary Anne Marsh, who’s worked on Kennedy campaigns, said. “The movement Bobby Kennedy Jr. is involved in is not a Democratic one, capital ‘D’ or small ‘d’. It looks more like an effort to undermine Democrats.”

Kennedy joins self-help author Marianne Williamson in the Democratic presidential primary. Both poll far behind Biden in recent surveys. Still, Kennedy picked up 10-percent support in a Morning Consult survey from early April. And he earned the backing of 14 percent of Biden voters in a Suffolk University/USA Today poll released ahead of his Wednesday kickoff. Beyond that, he has some names he can rely on; not just his own but former Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), who introduced him on Wednesday at the Park Plaza Hotel.

Yet the brass band that played and the red, white and blue bunting that draped the balconies of the hotel ballroom belied any serious shot at real relevance for him.

With the absence of Kennedys — and Democrats — Kennedy surrounded himself on Wednesday with an eclectic mix of vaccine skeptics, independent voters and conservatives, several of whom had flown in from across the country and many of whom were fed up with what they characterized as a corrupt, dishonest federal government. Clad in Kennedy 2024 shirts and pins, they cast the Kennedy outcast as misunderstood, or unfairly ignored.

They waved signs that said “heal the divide” and punctured his rambling, two-hour speech with ear-piercing whistles.

Then, near the end, an emergency alarm blared telling people to evacuate.

    Kennedy brushed it aside.

“Nice try,” he said, to a standing ovation.

Kelly Garrity and Sam Stein contributed to this report.

  • Same-sex marriage: Genitals don’t define absolute concept of man or woman, observes SC

Same-sex marriage: Genitals don’t define absolute concept of man or woman, observes SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: While hearing a batch of petitions seeking legal sanction to same-sex marriage, the Supreme Court on Tuesday orally observed that there is no absolute concept of a man or a woman and it cannot be only about the genitals, rather it is far more complex.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, submitted before a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud that there is a legislative intent that a marriage can only happen between a biological man and a biological woman, including Special Marriage Act.

Chief Justice Chandrachud told Mehta, “Very important judgement you are making. That very notion of a biological man is absolute and the notion of biological woman is also absolute…” Mehta said a biological man is a biological man and it is not a notion.

    MS Education Academy

The Chief Justice said, “There is no absolute concept of a man or a woman at all…it cannot be the definition of what your genitals are, it is far more complex. Even when the Special Marriage Act (SMA) says man and woman, the very notion of a man and notion of a woman is not an absolute, based on what genitals you have….”

During the hearing, Mehta stressed that his preliminary objections against the maintainability of the petitions seeking same-sex marriage should be decided first and added that all states should be issued notices before a decision is made by the top court.

Mehta submitted that the institution of marriage affects personal laws. The Hindu Marriage Act is a codified personal law and Islam has their own personal law, and part of them is not codified. The bench – comprising justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S. Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and P.S. Narasimha – replied that it is not getting into personal laws.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing one of the petitioners seeking recognition of same-sex marriage, submitted that his clients seek a declaration that “we have a right to get married.” The counsel said the state will recognise that right under the Special Marriage Act and the marriage will be recognised by the state after the declaration of this court.

Rohatgi contended that this is because even now we are stigmatised, and this is even after the Article 377 judgment, and that the Special Marriage Act should mention ‘spouse’ instead of man and women.

Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for one of the parties in the matter opposing same-sex marriages, argued that marriage between man and woman is not a gift of law, but existed since time immemorial and marriages are necessary to perpetuate the human race itself. Dwivedi contended that even SMA has provisions reflective of personal laws and talks about different marriageable age for a man and a woman. How would one reconcile with these (who is man and who is woman)?

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal submitted that he is all for such relationships but is concerned about the societal severe consequences, which may follow after declaration and questioned, what happens if they adopt a child and later want to separate? Who gets maintenance?

Sibal stressed that if piecemeal arrangement is done then it will create more complications, which will hurt the community and in other countries where same-sex marriages were recognised, they overhauled the entire legal framework.

The arguments in the matter will continue after 2 p.m. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the demand for same-sex marriage is a “mere urban elitist views for the purpose of social acceptance,” and recognising the right of same-sex marriage would mean a virtual judicial rewriting of an entire branch of law.

The Centre’s response came on a batch of petitions challenging certain provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, Foreign Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act and other marriage laws as unconstitutional on the ground that they deny same-sex couples the right to marry or alternatively to read these provisions broadly so as to include same-sex marriage.

Dont know Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, says Kavitha; slams BJP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: On conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar’s allegation that there is a nexus between Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and BRS MLC Kavitha Kalvakuntla, the MLC denied the allegations and said that Sukesh is being used as a ‘ploy’ being used to defame the Telangana government, chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and his family members.

“A financial culprit, who released a nameless letter and BJP MLA Raghunanandan Rao writing a letter to the Election Commission based on it and Nizamabad BJP MP D Arvind, as part of the BJP’s tool kit is using it to defame me on social media,” she wrote in an open letter.

Alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar has made public his alleged WhatsApp chats with jailed AAP leader Satyendar Jain and K. Kavitha, BRS leader and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.

    MS Education Academy

Presently lodged at the Mandoli Jail in the national capital, Chandrashekhar is accused of extorting Rs 200 crore from a businessman’s wife.

In the purported conversations released on Wednesday, Chandrashekhar alleges that there is a connection between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and the BRS leader with regard to the Delhi excise policy scam.

In a letter directed to Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, Chandrashekhar has accused AAP and Kejriwal of having multiple contracts and business deals with him.

He wrote, “This very application and attached chats expose the link between the Aam Aadmi party, Arvind Kejriwal and BRS leader K. Kavitha, who are involved in the Delhi liquor scam.”

The allegations levelled by Chandrashekhar have raised concerns about the role of political leaders in the liquor policy scam. Further inquiries will likely provide additional insights into the matter.

Chandrashekhar in his letter stated that the very application and chats attached show the nexus between the Aam Aadmi party, Arvind Kejriwal and Kavitha, who are allegedly involved in the Delhi liquor policy scam.

According to Chandrashekhar, the chats submitted to the L-G will aid the ongoing investigation into the liquor scam.

“The said chats are with regard to Rs 15 crore given by me to Arvind kejriwal and Satyendar Jain which was asked to be delivered to K. Kavitha of the BRS in Hyderabad,” said the letter released through his legal counsel Anant Malik.

According to the screenshots of the alleged chats, it is evident that Chandrashekhar had a coded conversation with a person whose number was saved as ‘Kavita Akka TRS’.

In one of the messages, the sender wrote, “AK bro package has to be given. It’s ready with me.”

Chandrashekhar alleged that this package refers to an amount of Rs 15 crore.

In another chat with a mobile number not saved on his phone, and claimed to be of Satyendar Jain, one of the messages read, “Bro Ghee tin ready. Yes bro 15 Kg.”

Chandrashekhar claimed that in their code words, ‘ghee’ refers to money and 15 kg meant Rs 15 crore.

He also wrote “inform big bro” in the same chat, to which the receiver replied, “AK Bhai knows”.
