    Disallowing Prayers At Jamia Masjid Condemned

    SRINAGAR: The managing body of the Jamia Masjid on Friday said that the authorities barred them from holding Friday prayers on the occasion of Jummat-ul-vida at Kashmir’s grand mosque.

    “District magistrate and police officials visited jama Masjid in the morning at 9.30 am and asked the management to lock the gates of the Masjid as administration had decided that jummat-ul-vida prayers will not be allowed at the Masjid,” Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid said in a statement.

    Denouncing the administration’s move, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah condemned disallowing of Jumat-Ul-Vida prayers at the historical Jamia Masjid in Nawhatta and said the measure is a clear violation and interference with the religious rights of the people.

    “Jamia Masjid is the central mosque and an epicentre of faith of millions of Muslims across JK. Having this great mosque out of bounds for people on the auspicious day of Jumat-ul-Vida is highly deplorable. Such unwarranted curbs hurt the religious sentiments of millions and are unsuited to the country’s democratic, secular moorings besides debunking the claims of government on changed ground situation across Kashmir,” he said.

    Calling the move of the administration a brazen violation religious freedom ,  Apni Party President Syed Mohammed Altaf Bukhari expressed deep regret over the closure of historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar on the auspicious occasion of Jumat-ul-Vida.

    He said, “It is unfortunate and deeply regrettable that authorities yet again have barred Muslims from offering prayers in Jamia Masjid even on this most auspicious day of Jumat-ul-Vida. This is also a brazen violation of religious freedom, which is guaranteed by the Constitution.”

    He urged the administration to revisit such decisions and ensure the practice of closing the mosque is not repeated on the upcoming occasions of Shab-e-Qadr and Eid-ul-Fitr.

    Apni Party President said that the practice of repeatedly disallowing people from offering prayers in the grand mosque, which has been a spiritual centre for the Muslims of Kashmir for centuries, is hurting the religious sentiments of the masses and it causes great distress to lakhs of Muslims who traditionally come from various parts of Valley to join congregational prayers here.

    Vice President and Media Head of Apni party, Syed Basharat Bukhari criticised the authorities for denying people the right to practice their religion freely and without any hindrance.

    Basharat Bukhari said that it was Chairperson JK Waqf Board  Darakshan Andrabi, who made a statement that Eid prayers would be allowed at Eidgah.

    “Surprisingly the Home Minister and LG have time and again stated that security is sound and foolproof in Kashmir, which raises the question of why security would suddenly become a problem on Eid day. If the security is indeed foolproof then it appears as though the administration does not want people to offer Eid prayers, which is unacceptable. HM and LG should accept and acknowledge that security in Kashmir is fragile”, he said.

  • In Kashmir’s Largest Seminary, 600 Muslims Perform Itikaf

    SRINAGAR: In a display of spiritual devotion, over 600 Muslims from both inside and outside the Kashmir Valley have gathered for 10 days of Itikaf at Darul Uloom Raheemiya, the biggest Islamic seminary in the Bandipora district of Kashmir.

    Notably, Itikaf takes place during the last 10 days of Ramadan when worshippers seclude themselves and devote their time to prayer, supplication, and reading the Quran. It starts from the sunset of the 20th day of Ramadan and ends when the Eid moon is sighted. During Itikaf, worshippers live and sleep in mosques.

    The gathering of individuals from diverse backgrounds at Darul Uloom Raheemiya highlights the importance of this practice in Islam and the desire of Muslims to connect with Allah and seek spiritual enlightenment.

    The participants will spend their days and nights engaged in prayer, reading the Quran, and seeking a deeper understanding of their faith.

    The atmosphere at the mosque is serene and filled with the sound of supplications and recitation of the holy book. “We are grateful to Allah for providing us with the opportunity to host it, and we hope that it will be a source of spiritual upliftment for all those who participate in it,” said one of the participants.

    He further added that Itikaf is a highly respected and long-standing tradition in the Islamic faith, dating back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

    “It is observed by Muslims all over the world, who use the final 10 days of Ramadan to retreat from worldly distractions and focus on prayer and reflection,” he said.

    To make the stay of the Muatakifs hassle-free and provide them with a peaceful environment to perform ‘Ibadat’, dozens of youngsters from Bandipora spend their nights in Darul Uloom to serve evening meals, Iftari, and Sehri (pre-dawn meals) to them. “Serving meals to 600 persons in limited hours is a Herculean task, but the locals make it easier as they voluntarily serve the guests,” said an organizer of the event.

    A volunteer named Muhammad Umar said: “These people are guests of Bandipora. They worship, and we try to make their stay easy so that they worship in peace. We will get rewarded also.” (KNO)

  • Baisakhi Celebrated With Religious Fervor

    SRINAGAR: The Sikh community celebrated Baisakhi with religious fervour and traditional enthusiasm across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday  as devotees thronged different gurudwaras to offer prayers

    Keeping with the tradition, the Mughal gardens Nishat and Shalimar witnessed heavy rush of visitors. Harwan and the Tulip garden also had visitors in large numbers.

    Bajan Keertans were performed at Gurudawaras across Kashmir. The biggest function was held at Chatti Pathshahi, Kathi Darwaza, Rainawari here.

    The Sikhs woke up early and visited Gurdwaras where langars or community feasts were arranged as part of charity on the day.

    People also exchanged greetings with friends, neighbours and relatives. Children spent their day in parks and gardens.

    Although Baisakhi is celebrated in various other northern states for a good harvest of Rabi crop, the Sikh community here celebrates the festival to mark the foundation of Khalsa Panth by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

    Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, paid a visit to Gurudwara Chatti Padshahi in Rainawari  to extended warm greetings to the Sikh fraternity on the occasion of Baisakhi. On the occasion, Asad was accompanied by senior functionaries of Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee.

    While extending warm greetings on the occasion, the DC expressed hope that this day would contribute towards strengthening brotherhood, unity, harmony and would be a harbinger of peace, progress and prosperity in J&K in general and in District Srinagar in particular. The Gurudwara authorities expressed satisfaction over the arrangements and conveyed their gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard.

    Deputy Commissioner marked his presence during Gurbani session inside the Gurudwara. He also addressed the gathering of devotees and highlighted how Vaisakhi as a major Sikh festival marks the birth of the Khalsa order by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, on 13 April 1699. He also mentioned that Panj Pyares exemplify Unity in Diversity as they hailed from different parts of our country and represented a multicultural ethos embedded in the social fabric of our society.

    During the visit, the DC also inspected various compartments of the Gurudwara including Langer and took stock of the facilities being extended to the devotees. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir reported 151 fresh covid-19 cases while there was one death due to the virus during the last 24 hours, officials said on Friday.

    They said that 57 cases were reported from Jammu division and 94 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall tally to 480746. Among the cases, 174524 are from Jammu division and 306222 from Kashmir Valley.

    Providing district wise details of the cases, officials said that, 38 cases were reported Jammu, 27 from Srinagar, 15 from Budgam, 10 each from Pulwama and Anantnag, nine from Ganderbal, eight each from Baramulla, Kulgam and Kishtwar, five from Kishtwar, four each Udhampur, Doda and Kulgam, three from Bandipora, besides one each from Rajouri, Kathua and Ramban.

    There was one death from Jammu division during the time. So far 4789 people have succumbed to the virus and among them include 2356 from Jammu division and 2433 from the Valley.

    Besides, they said, 92 Covid-19 patients recovered during the last 24 hours—36 from Jammu division and 56 from Kashmir Valley. There are now 686 active cases— 301 in Jammu and 386 in Kashmir. (GNS)

  • Unidentified Female Body Recovered In JK

    SRINAGAR: The body of an unidentified woman was recovered from Nallah at Gurwatan area of Damhal Hajipora in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday, officials said.

    Police sources said that some passerby noticed a female body lying in Veshow Nallah near a bridge and informed the police.

    On getting information, a police team rushed to the spot and retrieved the body from the nallah, they said.

    They said the body was shifted to hospital for medico and legal formalities while identification is being ascertained. (KNO)

  • Spray Fungicide Before Rains, Follow Spray Schedule: Experts to Orchardists

    SRINAGAR: In view of the wet spell forecast from 17th of April, the experts have advised orchardists to spray fungicide before rains to avoid scab-like diseases.

    Quoting experts, KNO reported that it is usually best to apply a fungicide before it rains, because rain causes leaf surfaces to be wet, a requirement for most foliar diseases, and rain may splash spores from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant.

    Therefore, if one is able to coat plants with fungicides prior to a rain, the plant is better protected from disease, they said.

    “Periods of wet weather are when a plant is most vulnerable to foliar disease. Fungicides, properly applied, may help to prevent or slow the initiation of disease and the spread of disease which commonly occurs during or shortly after a rain,” they added.

    Dr Tariq Rasool, a senior scientist at SKUAST (Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology) said that as rains are predicted from Sunday, growers must spray fungicide before rains to avoid scab.

    “Orchards where over 50 to 60 percent petals have fallen must be sprayed with any SKUAST recommended fungicide to avoid any disease in future,” he said.

    Those Orchardists who have sprayed in around last week of March and apple flowers are in full, they too can go far fungicides, as research has been found it safe to spray fungicide in bloom without any effect on the fruit, he said.

    He advised farmers that they must use mist spray not full speed spray so that it won’t damage the petals and fruits and mist spray must be used always and the practice of bathing the whole tree must be avoided.

    “Best time for spray is morning and this is the critical stage of the scab so people must avoid mixing more pesticides and insecticides and focus on fungicide only this time,” he said.

    He added that even if it rains, a few hours after spraying fungicide, it will still provide protection to the fruit and keep diseases at bay.

  •  Scholar’s Allegations Against Supervisor Investigated Promptly, As Per Law: KU

    SRINAGAR: The University of Kashmir said on Friday that its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) investigated the complaint filed by a PhD scholar against her then Supervisor promptly and as per the law, refuting that any “obstruction” was created in the matter.

    Referring to a news report on some social media platforms which came into the notice of the University about the instant matter, a KU spokesperson said the University took all steps necessary to address the alleged complaint with promptness and to facilitate the complainant in completion of her PhD degree.

    “Upon receiving the alleged complaint from the National Commission for Women, New Delhi, the University referred the matter to its Women’s Empowerment and Grievance Committee without delay. Since the complaint involved allegations of sexual harassment, as well as a complaint about the delay in the complainant’s PhD thesis submission, the matter was also referred to the University’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC),” the spokesperson said in a statement to GNS, adding that the ICC provided the complainant with a fair opportunity to record her statement freely and without fear, and the faculty member against whom the complaint was made was also provided with the same opportunity.

    To arrive at a just conclusion, the Committee also contacted the teaching and non-teaching staff at CCAS to record their observations. According to the complainant’s recorded statement before the ICC, she alleged that she was harassed in 2016 while she was preparing her synopsis and had not yet registered for her PhD,” the spokesperson said.

    “However, she did not file a complaint with the authorities until December 2019 i.e. a gap of almost three years. As per the provisions of UGC (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in HEIs) Regulations, 2015, an aggrieved person/complainant can file a written complaint within three months of the incident. However despite this time lapse, the ICC went ahead with the investigating the complaint and subsequently submitted its report to the competent authority,” the spokesperson said, adding that the ICC’s report concluded, among other things, that the complaint was a result of “animosity resulting from non-compatibility between the scholar and the supervisor.”

    “In view of the non-compatibility, a Co-Supervisor was nominated by the University to Co-supervise the complainant’s PhD and undertake all the process including evaluation/examination, academic clearance, formulation of panel of examiners, supervisor’s report, viva-voce, and any other necessary formalities. The co-supervisor, from the Department of Sociology, was also authorised to assess and examine the thesis of the complainant and undertake all other formalities leading to the award of the PhD degree.”

    The PhD degree was subsequently awarded to the complainant on 12.12.2022.

    The University strongly denies any obstruction of action in the matter at hand. The University reiterates that it is fully committed to address any complaints related to sexual harassment and it recognises the importance of handling such complaints with utmost sensitivity. We are deeply committed to creating a fully secure academic institution/workplace for our students and women employees in all our campuses, and we will continue to ensure that complaints related to sexual harassment are handled in a timely, just and fair manner,” the spokesperson said.

    The allegation that the University delayed action in the matter is far from the truth and is strongly refuted. “The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal action in case of furnishing wrong information since it involves the prestige and reputation of the institution,” the spokesperson said.   • Youth Found Dead In Jammu and Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: A youth was found dead in Binner Rafiabad area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district here on Friday.

    As per the reports, a youth identified as Adil Ahmad, a resident of Doniwari Rafiabad, was found dead by locals in the area, who subsequently informed the police.

    They said police has reached the spot and have recovered the body.

    Meanwhile police have taken cognizance of the incident and shifted the body to hospital for medico-legal formalities, they said.

  • Baisakhi Festivity Turns Tragic: Footbridge Collapse Injures Many

    SRINAGAR: Several persons were injured after a footbridge collapsed during Baisakhi celebration in Udhampur district on Friday.

    An official said that a footbridge collapsed during the Baisakhi celebration at Beni Sangam in Bain village in Udhampur’s Chenani Block.

    He said that at least six people were injured during the incidents who all are being hospitalized.

    He said that a rescue operation is underway while police and other teams have reached the site. (KS)
