Documentary row: Hindu Sena puts up anti-BBC placards outside organisation’s Delhi office

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Hindu Sena on Sunday allegedly put up anti-BBC placards outside the UK-headquartered broadcaster’s office on Kasturba Gandhi Marg here over its documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Placards reading “BBC is a threat to India’s Unity and it should be Banned” and “BBC stop tarnishing India’s image. BBC leave India” were put up outside the main gate of the BBC office amid a row over the controversial documentary.

The placards were removed by the police.

Hindu Sena members also accused the media organisation of conspiring to tarnish and malign the image of both India and Prime Minister Modi.

The BBC is a threat to the unity and integrity of the nation and the channel should be banned in India immediately, Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta said.

He recalled that the BBC was banned in India during the tenure of Indira Gandhi as prime minister. The ban was lifted after the organisation submitted an apology, Gupta claimed.

When asked, a senior police officer said, “Our patrolling team, which was present nearby, spotted the placards outside the BBC office and removed those.

“Some of them (Hindu Sena members) were still trying to display the placards elsewhere but they could not due to police presence and fled.”

Legal action has not been initiated as no complaint was received, he said.

Students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia held protests here during the past week after the varsity authorities refused to allow screening of the documentary.

The government had last week directed Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question”. The Union Ministry of External Affairs has called the documentary a “propaganda piece” lacking objectivity and reflecting a colonial mindset.

However, opposition parties have slammed the government’s move to block access to the documentary.

  • PIL filed in SC challenging Centre’s decision to ban BBC documentary

PIL filed in SC challenging Centre’s decision to ban BBC documentary

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court against the Centre’s decision to “ban” a BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots in the country, alleging it was “malafide, arbitrary and unconstitutional”.

The PIL filed by advocate ML Sharma also urged the apex court to call and examine the BBC documentary – both parts I and II – and sought action against persons who were responsible and were involved directly and indirectly with the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Sharma said that in his PIL he has raised a constitutional question and the top court has to decide whether citizens have the right under Article 19 (1) (2) to see news, facts and reports on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

He has sought direction to quash the order dated January 21, 2023 of the Ministry of the Information and Broadcasting, terming it as illegal, malafide, arbitrary and unconstitutional.

His plea said whether the central government can curtail freedom of press which is a fundamental right as guaranteed under Article 19 (1) (2) of the Constitution.

“Whether without having an Emergency declared under Article 352 of the Constitution of India by the president, Emergency provisions can be invoked by the central government?” the PIL said.’

It claimed the BBC documentary has “recorded facts” which are also “evidence” and can be used to further the cause of justice for the victims.

On January 21, the Centre issued directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the controversial BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question”, according to sources.

  • BBC documentary on PM Modi is “international conspiracy”: BJP leader CT Ravi

BBC documentary on PM Modi is “international conspiracy”: BJP leader CT Ravi

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: BJP national general secretary CT Ravi on Saturday condemned BBC for misleading the audience with its documentary ‘The Modi Question’ and called it an “international conspiracy”.

While speaking at a press conference in Bengaluru, the BJP leader accused BBC of presenting incomplete information in the documentary.

“The BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is nothing but an international conspiracy. After the 2002 riots, BJP won more than five times in Gujarat and a second time in the centre. He is a world-known and popular leader,” he said.

He stated that the documentary did not cover the Nanavati report which concluded that the Gujarat riots were devoid of any conspiracy.

Targeting the anti-government elements, he said that the documentary is a propaganda of the people who despise the Modi-led government.

He further exclaimed that the people should trust the verdict of the Supreme court which gave a clean chit to PM Modi and not the BBC documentary and English people who plundered India during the British rule.

“With ‘Anti-Modi gangs interviews’ BBC did not show the Nanavati report. Even SC in January 2022 order gave a clean chit and rejected the plea. What is the agenda for making such documentaries? Those who do not like the development of India, the anti-Modi gang and the frustrated lost parties created the conspiracy through the BBC documentary,” he said.

The general secretary slammed Congress and alleged the party’s link with the documentary.

He questioned BBC’s decision to make the documentary about the Gujarat riots 20 years after the incident and stated that the BJP has overcome such false narratives, while also mentioning that the documentary could have been made by presenting all the truthful facts.

“BBC interviewed only anti-modi people and did not consider the SC’s order. This is an agenda to create a bad image of the country and the PM,” he said.

Earlier, this month, the government denounced the BBC series ‘The Modi Question’, calling it a “propaganda piece designed to push a discredited narrative”.

The government also pulled down the series from various social media platforms, including Twitter and Youtube.

  • BBC documentary screening: Cops’ action against students wrong, says Chirag

BBC documentary screening: Cops’ action against students wrong, says Chirag

    [ad_1]

Patna: Former Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan on Saturday voiced disapproval of police action against students in Delhi over attempted screening of the BBC documentary on the communal riots that took place in Gujarat two decades ago.

Paswan, who now heads a splinter group of the party founded by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan, however, qualified his statement by adding that the Centre’s decision to proscribe the documentary should also be “respected”.

“I believe that the police action against Delhi University students was wrong. However, once a decision has been taken by the Centre, that should also be respected”, he told reporters.

The 38-year-old leader was asked about what he thought of the controversy surrounding the documentary on the communal conflagration of 2002 which had led his late father to resign from the Union cabinet in protest.

Paswan senior, however, realigned with the BJP, which ruled Gujarat as well as the Centre when the riots took place.

The late leader also remained a member, till death, of the Union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002.

Chirag Paswan, who represents Jamui Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, was also asked about turmoil in the ruling ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in the state.

“My view is that coalitions formed solely with electoral arithmetic in mind always tend to be shaky. Alliances must always be based on principles”, said Paswan, who is accused by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) of having been part of a “BJP conspiracy” in the 2020 assembly polls.

Training his guns at Kumar, the young leader said the longest serving CM of Bihar had “no vision” for the development of the state and challenged the veteran leader for an open debate.

Paswan also claimed that people of the state were paying more for electricity than residents of other parts of the country since power was purchased by the government at “inexplicably higher rates, thanks to a powerful nexus the CM also cannot break”.

Notably, the CM has been pressing for a “one nation one tariff” policy, claiming that under the current system impoverished Bihar was being compelled to cough up more than other states to get its quota of electricity.

Paswa also slammed Kumar for failure to attract investors and asked the Bihar CM to take a leaf out of the book of PM Modi who used to hold “investor summits” in Gujarat when he ruled the state.

Screened BBC documentary on institute’s campus: FTII students’ association

    [ad_1]

Pune: The students’ association of the Film and Television Institute of India screened the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Godhra riots on the campus of the premier acting school here, said the student body on Saturday.

“On 26/01/23, we screened the banned BBC documentary The Modi Question’ at FTII,” said a statement issued by the FTII Students’ Association.

The Centre had last week directed social media platforms Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary “India: The Modi Question”. The Ministry of External Affairs has trashed the documentary as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

Throughout history, the association’s statement said, the banning of literature, music, and in recent times, media, has been a sign of a crumbling society.

“The act of scrutiny should be welcomed by our elected representatives. Instead, they quickly tag it as false propaganda and try to shove it under the rug. They should know that the sure-fire way for something to be watched is to ban it.

“However, the BBC documentary barely scratches the surface of the kind of violence that has been perpetuated throughout the country for a dedicated, singular, vicious purpose. It would be startling to us if anyone in India was surprised by the happenings in this documentary,” said the students’ association.

FTII Registrar Sayyid Rabeehashmi said, “It is being reported that a group of students screened the documentary. The matter will be looked into.”

Over the past few days, students at many educational institutes, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Ambedkar University in the national capital, have tried to screen the controversial BBC documentary.

In Kerala, the Congress screened the programme on Thursday.

BBC documentary: Student’s outfit calls for screening in DU’s North Campus

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A few days following a ruckus over its screenings at JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia, a student outfit has given a call for holding the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Godhra riots at Delhi University.

The Bhim Army Student Federation has said that it will hold the screening at 5 pm outside the Arts Faculty in the North Campus of the University of Delhi (DU).

The administration has already denied permission for the event.

Meanwhile, the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has announced to hold the screening at 4 pm in North Campus and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) at 1 pm on the Ambedkar University Kashmere Gate campus.

The government had recently directed social media platforms to block links to the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” with the External Affairs Ministry trashing it as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

The Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday became the center of a kerfuffle after SFI’s plans to organize the screening of the documentary were thwarted by the varsity and the police.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) witnessed a ruckus and protests over the screening of the same on Tuesday.

The screening of “India: The Modi Question” on Thursday evening was organised by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the students’ wing of the CPI(M).

Over 200 students of the university were in attendance, according to Suvankar Majumdar, a member of the JU’s zonal committee of SFI.

“The screening was conducted peacefully without any resistance or disturbance,” he added.

On Friday, the SFI will screening the documentary within the campus of the Presidency University (PU).

The screening will take place at the badminton court within the PU campus at 4 p.m., SFI’s Kolkata district president Debanjan Dey told IANS.

On Tuesday night, high drama prevailed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in New Delhi, with student members alleging that they were attacked with stones while watching the controversial documentary.

There was similar tension over the two separate initiatives by Congress and CPI(M)’s youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) for screening the documentary in Thiruvananthapuram.

There were reports of clashes there as well.

The Central government had earlier termed the BBC documentary as propaganda against the Prime Minister and the country.

BBC documentary screening: Students stage protest at JNU against ABVP’s ‘hooliganism’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of various Left organisations staged a protest at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Thursday against the “hooliganism” of the RSS-affiliated ABVP, a day after students claimed that stones were hurled at them during the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The students, affiliated to the Students’ Federation of India, Democratic Students’ Federation, All India Students Association and other organisations raised slogans against the ABVP and held placards that read ‘rise in the rage against ABVP hooliganism’.

“ABVP goons hurled stones at students gathered for the screening of the documentary. This is hooliganism,” AISA JNU president Qasim said.

The protest was organised by the JNU Students’ Union. The protestors marched from Ganga dhaba to Chandrabhaga hostel inside the JNU campus.

On Tuesday, students, who gathered at the JNU students’ Union office for the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots, claimed the varsity administration cut power and internet to stop the event, and staged a protest after stones were thrown on them.

They claimed that they were attacked when they were watching the documentary on their mobile-phones as the screening could not be held. Some alleged that the attackers were members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a charge the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated student body denied.

Speaking to Siasat.com, SFI HCU president Abhishek Nandan said that they plan to show both episodes. He also added that the SFI is not looking for any altercation with the ABVP, who is currently screening The Kashmir Files.

“We do not want to create any ruckus or fight with the ABVP. In fact, we do not want any kind of disturbance. Students want to watch the BBC documentary,” Nandan said.

When asked if permission to screen was granted by the university, he said, “Permission is not needed.”

ABVP to screen Kashmir Files at UoH

Speaking to Siasat.com, ABVP HCU president Namrutha said that The Kashmir Files is a movie that everyone should watch.

When asked if it was a retaliation move against the recent screening of the banned BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi which showcases his role in the 2002 Gujarat riots when he was the state’s chief minister, Namrutha deflected the question.

“It is a good movie. Moreover, students were asking us to screen some movie and since it is Republic Day, an important day in Indian history, we thought why not. The Kashmir Files is an important movie and we think everyone should watch it,” she said.

Earlier, a video emerged on Twitter where ABVP members are seen conducting a sit-in and shouting slogans to ban BBC.

What is the BBC documentary on Modi?

The new two-part documentary series of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) ‘India: The Modi Question‘ focuses on the 2002 Gujarat riots that killed thousands and left millions homeless, especially in the Muslim community, and the role played by the then chief minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The documentary which is aired only in the United Kingdom looks at the escalating tension between the Muslim community and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Hindu right-wing organisations – Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

It states that “Modi is directly responsible” for the riots that killed millions of people and displaced many, mostly Muslims. It also said the “violence was politically motivated” and the aim “was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”. The riots were impossible “without the climate of impunity created by the state government.”
