Medical services hit in Rajasthan as doctors protest Right to Health Bill

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Medical services were affected in parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday after government doctors and faculty members in medical colleges went on a one-day strike in solidarity with private doctors agitating against the Right to Health Bill.

However, several government doctors attended to patients in OPDs at places like Bharatpur, Alwar and Udaipur.

Emergency services and ICUs were exempted from the strike.

A health department official said in the evening that there was no significant impact of the boycott because the OPDs were handled through alternative arrangements.

There was not much impact of the boycott in Sawai Mansingh (SMS) hospitals, the largest state-run hospitals in Rajasthan. Services remained unaffected in Dausa, the hometown of state Health Minister Parsadi Lal Meena.

In Rajasthan, private doctors are demanding withdrawal of the Bill passed in the state assembly last Tuesday. According to the Bill, every resident of the state will have the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment” at any “public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres”.

Iqbal Khan, joint secretary, health department, had on Tuesday issued an order to medical college principals directing them to ensure that medical services in OPD, IPD, ICU, emergency and maternity wards were not affected and to take disciplinary action against the doctors going on leave without approval.

Meena said the strike was “unfair” and “unjustified” and that the doors of the government were always open for any negotiation.

Taking a tough stand, the state government warned of disciplinary action against the government doctors for going on leave without approval. As a result, some of the doctors returned to work after boycotting work for two hours in Alwar, Bharatpur, Udaipur and Dungarpur.

Amid the protest, Bundi collector Ravindra Goswami, who is also an MBBS doctor, attended to a few patients at the district hospital.

The management of OPD in SMS hospital was handled by additional principal, additional superintendent and other doctors engaged in administrative work.

Rajasthan: Govt medicos to go on strike on Wednesday in solidarity with private doctors

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Medical services in Rajasthan are likely to be seriously affected on Wednesday with government doctors and faculty members at medical colleges announcing a one-day mass leave in solidarity with private doctors agitating against the Right to Heath Bill.

Emergency services, however, will be exempted.

Private hospitals and nursing homes in Rajasthan have been shut for several days due to a strike by private doctors, leading to a rush of patients in government hospitals.

Private doctors have been striking to demand the withdrawal of the bill, which was passed in the assembly last week.

On Tuesday, the All Rajasthan In-Service Doctors’ Association announced the one-day strike in support of the agitating private doctors.

Association general secretary Dr Shankar Bamnia said more than 15,000 in-service (government) doctors will go on a one-day mass leave in support of the private doctors’ movement against the Right to Health Bill. Resident doctors and medical college faculties will also join the strike.

“All doctors will be on a one-day mass leave in support of the (private doctors’) movement,” Bamnia said.

Bamnia, however, said emergency services will not be affected.

The protesting doctors have claimed that the bill will increase bureaucratic interference in their functioning.

According to the bill, every resident of the state will have the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment” at any “public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres”.

Dr Vijay Kapoor, secretary of the Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Society, said their agitation entered the 11th day on Tuesday.

Claiming that Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has not yet called them for talks, Kapoor said he should directly speak with the agitating doctors instead of spending lakhs of rupees on advertisements.

Chief Secretary Usha Sharma and senior state officials held a meeting with a delegation of the agitating private hospital operators on Sunday and assured them to hold a discussion on their suggestions regarding the bill.

However, the doctors were adamant and said any discussion would be possible only after the bill was withdrawn.

The bill was passed following the recommendations by a select committee.

Before the bill was amended, the draft mentioned “any health care provider, establishment or facility, including private provider, establishment or facility, public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres, qualified”.

According to the amended bill that was passed, “designated health care centres” mean health care centres as prescribed in the rules, which are yet to be framed.

The private doctors said their one-point demand is the bill’s withdrawal and any discussion on the points in it will be held only after the government fulfills the demand.

Health Minister Parsadi Lal has already clarified that the bill will not be withdrawn because all the suggestions from doctors have already been incorporated and hence the demand was not justified.

  • Doctors warn against self-medication in H3N2 flu

Doctors warn against self-medication in H3N2 flu

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: With influenza A subtype H3N2 virus claiming two lives in India, one each in Karnataka and Haryana, doctors in Lucknow have urged people to avoid self-medication.

Sheetal Verma, senior faculty department of microbiology at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) said, “The influenza A virus sub-type H3N2 is nothing new but as people are experiencing longer spells of cough, self-medication should be strictly avoided. There is nothing to panic. This variant does not lead to a pandemic but taking precautions against it will certainly help.”

She said that it is better for people experiencing fever, cough or respiratory distress to consult a doctor instead of buying a drug over-the-counter because this flu variant is different.

According to doctors, the precautions people should take include — keeping body immunity adequate and avoiding close contact with unknown people, particularly avoiding crowded places.

Abhishek Shukla, Secretary General of the Association of International Doctors, said, “A majority of those experiencing a longer spell of cough these days have poor body immunity may be due to age (elderly) or due to some other pre-existing illness.”

P.K. Gupta, former President, IMA, Lucknow, said, “Children and elderly are the most vulnerable. They are advised to avoid cold weather conditions during the morning and late evening. This will reduce the chance of getting infected. Everyone should avoid self-medication.”

  • Influenza Scare: Doctors Say No Need To Panic, Exercise Caution

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Advising people to take extreme precautions and maintain hygiene, doctors on Friday said there is no need to panic regarding Influenza H3N2 variant virus infection in Kashmir .

They said that spread of infection can be prevented through measures such as maintaining hygiene and avoiding crowds.

Medical Superintendent, Chest Disease hospital (CD), Saleem Tak  said  that for the last two months cases of Influenza are being reported at CD hospital.

He said that around 50 cases of H1N1 of which H3N2 is a variant were reported in the last two months at the hospital.

Such patients have Covid-19 like symptoms but their results are being found negative Covid-19, however, they are being found positive for influenza H1N1, he said.

Patients have usually Covid-19 symptoms besides fever, mild cough and running nose and few positive patients are currently admitted at the hospital, he said.

He said that there is no need to panic but people must take precautions such as wearing masks and preventing crowding.

Officials from SKIMS said four cases of H3N2 have been reported so far at the hospital while an epidemiologist from Directorate of Health Services Kashmir said that no such case has been reported in hospitals working under DHSK.

They said that elderly people, people with comorbidities and children are more prone to flu and they must take precautions like avoid unnecessary gathering and follow proper hygiene.

Many people are taking antibiotics on their own; they said adding that it is not right to take medicine without doctor’s advice and to take antibiotics unnecessarily as medicines need to be given based on symptoms.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) recently has advised against indiscriminate use of antibiotics amid rising cases of cough, cold and nausea.

The fever will last five to seven days, it said.

The fever goes away at the end of three days but the cough can persist for up to three weeks, the IMA’s Standing Committee for Anti-Microbial Resistance said.

Viral cases have also surged due to air pollution, it said, adding that it mostly occurs in people aged below 15 and above 50 and causes upper respiratory infections along with fever.

The association also asked doctors to prescribe only symptomatic treatment and not antibiotics. (KNO)

Hyderabad: Harish Rao lauds doctors for operating on babies with cardiac issues

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana health minister T Harish Rao on Saturday lauded the surgeons who successfully operated on 9 children with cardiac issues in Nizam’s Institute Of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

Dr Ramana, a London-based doctor, who is a native of Jagtial has performed the surgery along with this team from London.

Speaking on the occasion, Harish Rao congratulated the doctors and said, “Dr Ramana is a well-known doctor in London and he approached us with a desire to serve his people. He also wanted to technically strengthen the medical staff of the state.”

Dr Ramana’s team provided training to the medical staff here and operated on 9 children with cardiac issues in the NIMS hospital, said the minister.

Speaking at the event in NIMS, Harish Rao said that 1 in every 100 babies is born with cardiac issues across the world, “In Telangana, every year, 6 lakh babies are born and 6000 of them have cardiac issues. Out of them, at least 1000 of them need surgeries”.

“Due to the limitations in government hospitals and not having enough money to get the surgeries done in private hospitals, many babies from poor families die,” he added.

To address the crunch in funds, Harish Rao said that, with the help of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and equipment from the government, a cardiothoracic department with an ICU, operation theatre, and other facilities has been established.-

Harish Rao further appealed to NRI doctors to extend their expertise to serve the people of the state.

“Dr Ramana and the team have operated on 9 kids and all the surgeries have been successful,” said the minister. He said that these kinds of surgeries have been performed previously in AIIMS, Delhi only.

Harish Rao stated that the government is developing super specialty hospitals in the state using Rs 6,000 crores.

“To help the poor, our chief minister has introduced many super specialty hospitals around Hyderabad. Also, Warangal super specialty hospital, a 24 storied building will be ready by the end of this year, and we will inaugurate it on Dasara. We will also expand NIMS hospital with another 2000 beds. Along with this, we will also add new blocks to Gandhi hospital,” said the minister.

Talking about medical seats in the state, Harish Rao said that Telangana stands first in the country in the number of MBBS seats, with 19 MBBS seats per 1 lakh population. “The state also has 7 PG medical seats per 1 lakh population and this is the second highest in the country. • World hearing day; Aging, chronic exposure to loud noises contribute to hearing loss, doctors

World hearing day; Aging, chronic exposure to loud noises contribute to hearing loss, doctors

    [ad_1]

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, Mar 03: Around 0.2 percent population in J&K have hearing disabilities with aging and chronic exposure to loud noises contributing to hearing loss.

Dr Saima Tabassum consultant ENT J&K health services told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that there are three main types of hearing loss including conductive, sensorineural, and mixed (both conductive and sensorineural).

The World Hearing Day is being observed for awareness about preventable hearing loss & deafness, ear health and care.

Dr Saima said that good hearing is crucial for communication, learning, and overall well-being because there is a highly-involved collaboration between ears and brains. “Our sense of hearing transmits and translates sounds of all kinds from our surroundings. So we can learn and understand,” she added.

According to the doctor, every 3rd or 4th person in each family has some sort of hearing impairment that’s why one shouldn’t ignore ear health.

Another ENT specialist from GMC told KNO that the signs and symptoms of hearing loss may include muffling of speech and other sounds, difficulty understanding words especially against background noise or in a crowd, trouble hearing consonants, frequently asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly.

He said causes of hearing loss include damage to the inner ear as aging and exposure to loud noise may cause wear and tear on hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain.

“When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs,” he said.

Ear war can block ear canal and prevent conduction of sound waves and earwax removal can help restore your hearing.

He also said that In the outer or middle of ear, any of these issues can cause hearing loss and loud blasts of noise, sudden changes in pressure, poking your eardrum with an object and infection can cause your eardrum to rupture and affect your hearing—(KNO)
