Russia jamming U.S. smart bombs in Ukraine, leaked docs say

The Pentagon in December began sending Kyiv advanced equipment that could convert unguided air-dropped munitions into precision-guided “smart bombs” that can hit Russian targets with a higher degree of accuracy.

The guided bombs can be launched by a variety of aircraft such as bombers and fighters, and are called Joint Direct Attack Munitions or JDAMs. The longer-range version being sent to Ukraine is called a JDAM-Extended Range, or JDAM-ER.

But the weapons have experienced higher-than-expected dud rates and have missed their targets on the battlefield, according to a leaked slide prepared by the Joint Staff and confirmed by a U.S. official, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue.

In some cases, the bomb fuzes were not arming when they were released, causing the weapon to fail to detonate. The Ukrainian air force put in place a fix to ensure the bombs are arming correctly, according to the slide and the official.

The document includes a diagram of the munition and lays out the technical issue the weapons are experiencing as well as the proposed fix. It also provides a detailed account of the weapon’s failure rate in several recent attacks, including the dates and the number of munitions it took to take out the target. However, POLITICO could not independently verify that information.

A larger problem is that Russia is using GPS jamming to interfere with the weapons’ targeting process, according to the slide and a separate person familiar with the issue who’s not in the U.S. government. American officials believe Russian jamming is causing the JDAMs, and at times other American weapons such as guided rockets, to miss their mark.

“I do think there may be concern that the Russians may be jamming the signal used to direct the JDAMs, which would answer why these munitions are not performing in the manner expected and how they perform in other war zones,” said Mick Mulroy a former Pentagon official and retired CIA officer.

A spokesperson for Boeing, which makes the guidance kits, referred questions to the U.S. government when asked for comment. Defense Department spokesperson Lt. Col. Garron Garn declined to comment on the content of the leaked documents.

“We have seen Ukraine use the security assistance the U.S. and our partners and allies have provided to great success in the defense of their sovereign territory,” Garn said. “We are not going to discuss battle damage or intelligence assessments due to operational security considerations.”

Delhi Police asked to enquire, register FIR against litigant for forging docs

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has directed the Delhi Police to enquire and register an FIR against a litigant for placing on record a fake court order to claim Rs 23.50 lakh as compensation.

The tribunal’s Presiding Officer, Ekta Gauba Mann, said that an attempt by litigant Pooja to wrongfully claim the compensation awarded to the petitioner in another case is a very serious issue.

“Pooja has prepared a fake order of this court by getting it fabricated by mentioning in place of Pushpa Rajwar v. Nawab Ali as Pooja v. The State & ors. and by mentioning in place of the name of this court the wrong name of the court,” the judge said.

“It is a very serious issue as this court is dealing with the award of compensation. By moving the present application, Pooja, on the basis of said alleged fake order, is attempting to get the award of Rs 23.50 lakh, i.e. the award amount which was awarded to the petitioner /victim in case titled Pushpa Rajwar v. Nawab Ali,” the judge said.

“So, the Station House Officer of Prashant Vihar police station is directed to inquire and then to register the FIR as to how come the fake copy of order in the name of this court has been placed on record by the applicant Pooja for wrongfully claiming the compensation of award amount which has been awarded to the actual victims of MACT case titled Pushpa Rajwar v. Nawab Ali,” the judge said.

The matter has been posted for further hearing after receiving the SHO’s report on March 14.

The counsel for Pooja told the court that he was not aware she had prepared any fake order of this court.

He sought permission to withdraw his vakalatnama, which was permitted by the court.

Dem Intel chair: Biden admin position on classified docs fails ‘the smell test’

    classified documents congress 97358

Rubio agreed, saying Congress needs to review the classified documents found in the possession of the president, former president and former vice president to assess whether the response was appropriate.

“A special counsel cannot have veto authority over Congress’ ability to do its job,” Rubio said. “This is going to be addressed one way or the other.”

    Warner responded: “Amen.”

None of the intelligence officials who testified on Wednesday, including Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, immediately responded to Warner or Rubio’s comments at the end of the open hearing.

The Justice Department has cited ongoing special prosecutor probes into Biden and Trump as limiting its ability to share the documents with the lawmakers.

Earlier in the hearing, both Haines and FBI Director Christopher Wray said under questioning from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) that they had personally reviewed some, but not all, of the recovered classified documents. Specific teams conduct document reviews and provide reports following those, Haines and Wray said.

“Although I have not reviewed all of the documents myself, I have gone through a fairly meticulous listing of all the documents that includes detailed information about the content,” Wray said. “So it’s not reading every page.”

Cotton said members were “very frustrated” that the documents haven’t even been characterized to the committee, warning that “some of us are prepared to start putting our foot down” without better answers from intelligence community agencies.

  • Morbi bridge collapse: Municipality seeks docs seized by SIT to reply to Gujarat govt’s notice

Morbi bridge collapse: Municipality seeks docs seized by SIT to reply to Gujarat govt’s notice

    [ad_1]

Morbi: The Morbi municipality has appealed to the Gujarat government to return documents seized by a special investigation team (SIT) probing the collapse of a bridge in the town so it could respond to the government’s show-cause notice asking why the civic body should not be dissolved over the tragedy, which claimed 135 lives.

All the documents are with the government-appointed SIT and the Morbi municipality does not have any document, an official from the civic body has said.

The British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Morbi collapsed on October 30, 2022. The Gujarat government last week issued a show-cause notice to the Morbi municipality asking why it should not be dissolved for failing to discharge its duties.

In the notice, the state Urban Development Department directed the civic body to submit a written clarification in the form of a general body resolution by January 25.

The bridge was maintained and operated by the Oreva Group as per an agreement signed with the Morbi municipality.
The 52-member Morbi municipality held a meeting on Monday and passed a resolution urging the government to return documents seized by the (government-appointed) SIT so it could respond to the government’s show-cause notice, the civic body’s vice president, Jayrajsinh Jadeja, told reporters after the meeting.

All the 52 elected representatives of the Morbi Municipality are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power in the state.

“Since all the documents are with the SIT and the Morbi municipality does not have any document, the municipality passed a resolution urging the government to return them as soon as possible so that it could reply to its notice,” Jadeja said.

In the notice, the Urban Development Department said the previous contract to operate the bridge expired in 2017.

Between 2018 and 2020, the Oreva Group had written several letters to the Morbi municipality warning about the dilapidated condition of the bridge and also cautioned that a serious accident may occur if the bridge remains open to the public in such a condition.

However, the civic body did not take cognizance of such warnings by the company, the notice said.

Moreover, the municipality did not take any concrete action to take over the bridge from the company in 2017 after the completion of the contract and remained inactive despite knowing the situation of the bridge, it said.

Notably, the state government had on December 13 told the Gujarat High Court, which took cognisance of the tragedy on its own and registered a public interest litigation (PIL), that it had decided to dissolve the municipality. The court had turned down the plea of the civic body members to be impleaded as a party in the case.

Nine persons, including four employees of Ajanta Manufacturing (Oreva Group), have been arrested so far in the case.
They include two managers and as many ticket booking clerks of the Oreva Group that was managing the British-era bridge.

The SIT had cited several lapses on part of the Oreva Group in repairs, maintenance and operation of the carriageway.
A Gujarat court last week also issued an arrest warrant against Jaysukh Patel, managing director of the Oreva Group, after getting an application for the same from police under section 70 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Patel, who is not named as an accused in the FIR, had moved the Morbi sessions court on January 20 for anticipatory bail fearing arrest in the bridge collapse case. The hearing was adjourned till February 1 as the public prosecutor was not present.
