Federal workers tell Trudeau to step in to pay and work-from-home dispute

    [ad_1]

Striking federal workers in Canada are calling for the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, to get involved in stalled negotiations, as the largest job action in decades enters its 10th day and key government services grind to a halt.

More than 100,000 employees with Canada’s largest public sector union have been on strike since last week in a battle over wages and the ability to work remotely.

The strike has disrupted the federal government’s ability to process income tax returns and to issue quarterly payments to low-income Canadians. With taxes due in the coming days, the country’s revenue agency has said it will not delay filing deadlines. Passport and visa processing have also slowed significantly.

The union and the federal government agree workers should get a raise – but the two sides are divided over how much is fair. The union initially called for 13.5% over three years, as well as contract language that formalizes a universal work-from-home policy. The treasury board has offered a 9% raise over a similar time period, which they say equates to an additional C$6,500 (US$4,800) annually for workers.

“This government says it cares about restoring services for Canadians, but they seem content to shrug it off and prolong this strike and its impact on Canadians everywhere,” the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the union, said in a recent internal email sent to workers.

Despite the protracted nature of the strike, 55% of Canadians support federal employees’ right to work from home, according to polling from the Angus Reid Institute, a non-profit public opinion firm.

In recent days, the union escalated its picket lines by targeting Toronto’s Pearson airport, the country’s busiest travel hub, as well as attempting to block shipping ports in Vancouver, Montreal and St John’s. Thousands of workers have also picketed on Parliament Hill.

Despite mounting pressure to end the strike, the treasury board, which oversees public administration, said in a statement it would “not sign agreements that the country cannot afford, nor ones that severely impact our ability to deliver services to Canadians”.

With talks stalled, union leaders say they have lost confidence in the treasury secretary, Mona Fortier, to break the impasse. Instead, they want Trudeau to take a more hands-on approach.

“He can either get involved personally and help settle this dispute or he can turn his back on the workers who are striking,” the union president, Chris Aylward, said while visiting striking workers on Parliament Hill. “We’ll be out here for as long as it takes.”

Trudeau has said he supports the right to collective bargaining.

“Yes, it’s frustrating to know that Canadians may, as the days come, have more difficulty accessing services, but that’s a motivator for everyone to try and resolve this,” said Trudeau.

As the strike drags on, the standoff has become increasingly used as prop, with leaders looking to score political points.

Earlier in the week, the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, sang Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, criticizing Trudeau’s trip to New York city for meetings. Poilievre was reminded by parliament’s speaker that singing is not permitted in the House of Commons.

The New Democratic party leader, Jagmeet Singh, who has a deal to support the governing Liberals until 2025, warned his party would not support any legislation that forced workers to abandon their strike.

  • Former IAS Officer Summoned In JK Biological Father Dispute Case

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A woman from Srinagar has changed her counsel with the hope of obtaining speedy justice and proving that an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer, Sudhanshu Pandey, is the biological father of her daughter. According to the woman, Pandey married her and had a daughter with her, but later abandoned them.

After hearing the counsel for the victim, Advocate Mir Naveed Gul, the Court of Second Additional Munsiff in Srinagar issued fresh directions to defendant Sudhanshu Pandey to appear in person for recording of the statement. The court directed Pandey to appear in person and file in writing whether he consents to a DNA test if the court orders one to check whether the girl born from the victim is his biological child or not.

The woman claims that Pandey, who was posted as Finance Secretary in the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, developed a relationship with her in Srinagar in 2010. Pandey then converted to Islam and married the woman in May 2010. Their daughter was born on April 12, 2011. However, a few months later, in October 2012, Pandey was transferred to New Delhi and he left the woman and their child in Srinagar.

Pandey refuted all the allegations and denied marrying the woman. He responded in court by stating that the allegations made in the petition are false and that he had not married the woman. He also mentioned that the woman had entered into another wedlock on August 1, 2010, which ended in divorce in October 2010, and the minor was a child from her first marriage.

The parties presented conflicting birth certificates and medical records of the child, with two different names listed as the father. The high court had ordered the finalization of the parentage suit before passing any order for maintenance.

Advocate Mir said, “The court has issued these directions afresh as Sudhanshu Pandey has served at various posts in J&K, including the rank of Commissioner Secretary.” He added that he was approached by the victim because she believes that the proceedings were delayed and she wants speedy delivery of justice. The high court sided with New Jersey.

During oral arguments in March, justices were clearly willing to allow New Jersey to exit the deal; they were only trying to figure out how to do so without creating precedent that might disrupt other multistate deals, like those setting boundaries and setting water rights.

In a short, 11-page ruling, Kavanaugh distinguishes this deal, known as a compact, from such water rights cases and ruled “it would not make much sense to conclude that each State implicitly conferred on the other a perpetual veto of withdrawal” in this deal.

After the oral arguments, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, both Democrats, had their staffs start meeting to figure out how to maintain ongoing investigations, enforcement actions and operations in anticipated of a ruling in New Jersey’s favor.

‘Buckle up’: DeSantis escalates Disney dispute, eyes hotel taxes and road tolls

    florida legislature disney 13444

Disney “tried to pull a fast one on the way out the door,” DeSantis said earlier in the day during a breakfast hosted by the Midland County Republican Party of Michigan. “That story’s not over yet. Buckle up. There’s more coming down the pike,” he added.

The rapid escalation between Disney and DeSantis this week comes in the aftermath of a Central Florida governing board that had been controlled by Disney passing a series of agreements that ensured Disney would keep a large degree of power despite a new law passed in February that created a new board controlled by the governor.

The moves stunned the DeSantis administration and the governor’s hand-picked board, which has since hired lawyers to examine whether it should challenge the legality of the agreements

On Monday, the governor called on his chief inspector general to do a “thorough review and investigation” into actions he said “undercut Florida’s legislative process, and defy the will of Floridians.”

But his remarks on Thursday evening outlined that more immediate actions are pending. DeSantis also said that the new district he appointed would explore developing property it owns that is adjacent to Disney property. He also contended that the Florida Legislature was prepared to void the development agreement that had been approved by the outgoing board.

Disney representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But the company released a statement last week to media outlets stating that “all agreements signed between Disney and the District were appropriate, and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida Government in the Sunshine law.”

During a shareholders meeting earlier this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger called Florida’s actions retaliatory as well as “anti-business” and “anti-Florida.”

The discord between Disney and DeSantis began last year when the company opposed the state’s “parental rights in education bill,” which has been called the “don’t say gay” bill by its critics. DeSantis took action after company executives sharply criticized the bill and said they would work to repeal it.

Florida lawmakers, at the request of the governor, earlier this year passed legislation to overhaul leadership of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the entity that has allowed the company the ability to operate its own government-like functions for more than 50 years on thousands of acres near Orlando.

That legislation came nearly a year after lawmakers pushed through a measure to dismantle Reedy Creek during a special session.

The probe by DeSantis’ chief inspector general comes while the Florida Legislature is midway through its annual legislative session. House Speaker Paul Renner has also contended that “all options are on the table” when it comes to Disney.

Mathura: A fast-track court here on Wednesday suspended its earlier order directing for a report from the revenue department on Shahi Masjid Idgah adjoining the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple here and fixed April 11 as the next date of hearing in the case.

“Civil Judge Senior Division of Fast Track Court, Niraj Gaund, has suspended the proceedings regarding sending Amin (a revenue department official) to Shahi Masjid Idgah for carrying out measurements,” District Government Counsel Sanjai Gaur said.

In the suit Bal Krishna and others versus Intezamia Committee and others, the fast-track court had on March 29 ordered for a report by Amin.

After hearing the arguments of defense counsel, the court said it would first hear the petitioner’s counsel who was not present in the court on Wednesday and fixed April 11 as the next date of hearing.

Defense counsel Niraj Sharma presented a ruling of the Allahabad High Court and another ruling of the Supreme Court regarding giving priority for hearing on maintainability of the suit, which the court accepted.

Bal Krishna through Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta and others had filed a suit in the court of Civil Judge Senior Division (III) on December 8 last year for shifting of Shahi Masjid Idgah which they claim has been constructed on a part of 13.37 acre land of Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust.

Republicans slam DeSantis for calling war in Ukraine ‘a territorial dispute’

    [ad_1]

    states legislation immigration 01268

“If you let Russia start to come in,” Sununu said, “and walk over Ukraine, you put all of Eastern Europe at risk. You put all of our NATO allies there at risk. And then when a NATO ally is now at risk, now you really risk having to put potential American troops on the ground, which nobody wants to see and shouldn’t happen.”

Sending $50 billion in aid to Ukraine, Sununu said, is “a deal,” if it means not having to send troops to fight a war in Europe.

“There are voices in our party that don’t see a vital American interest in Ukraine. But I see it differently,” former Vice President Mike Pence said on ABC’s “This Week.” Pence called DeSantis’s description of the war as a territorial dispute “wrong” and said the U.S. “ought to provide the tanks, the missiles and the aircraft that the Ukrainian military can use to take the fight to the Russians.”

“We have Russian aggression on the move, again, just as they did under [President Barack] Obama and Crimea, as they did under President [George W.] Bush in Georgia. And we have to meet this moment with American strength,” Pence said.

Taking a stand against Russia in Ukraine also sends a message to China, Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said.

While there is territory being taken by Russia, “this is bigger than that for us.” Chinese President Xi Jinping is watching, Rounds said, and should the U.S. fail to assist Ukraine, Xi may see it as a sign that China can make similar moves in Taiwan without facing American interference.

“[Xi] wants to see how we respond and whether or not we can keep our allies together, whether or not. … NATO stays together or whether or not it strengthens NATO. So, this is a bigger picture than just territory,” Rounds said.

The war in Ukraine has divided the Republican Party in recent months, with some viewing it through a Cold War lens and others suggesting the conflict is not as important to Americans as other issues. With his statement last week, DeSantis joined with Republicans such as Speaker Kevin McCarthy in the latter camp.

“While the U.S. has many vital national interests — securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness within our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party — becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them,” he said in his statement to Fox News.
