Bowlers need to be more aware; 10 more runs could have made a difference: Dhoni

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was left ruing the four-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in their own den, saying the bowlers need to be more aware of the situation and also indicated that the execution was probably “bad”.

CSK had a good chance of victory after posting 200 for four at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, thanks chiefly to another Devon Conway special of unbeaten 92, but the Shikhar Dhawan-led side hit the winning runs off the last ball to silence the yellow brigade on Sunday.

“We lost it in a couple of overs in the middle. You need to be aware what you need to bowl and be clear because the batters will be going for it (big hits). (Matheesha) Pathirana bowled well but other than that, we need to see if the plans were wrong or the execution was bad,” said Dhoni.

Barring openers Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad (37), none of the other batters could make an impact and Dhoni felt his team could have scored another 10 runs.

“We should be doing better with the bat. The pitch had turn, there was some turn when it hit the seam. The slower balls gripped. I think, 200 (runs) was par. Also towards the end of our innings, could we have got 10 more?” he questioned.

Winning team skipper Shikhar Dhawan said it was a special feeling defeating CSK in Chennai and praised wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma (21 off 10 balls) and Liam Livingstone (40 off 24) coming to the party.

“It feels very, very special beating Chennai in Chennai. I am very happy with the way we played. It shows great character of our side to bounce back from that loss, and leaving it behind.

“All credit goes to the team and the support staff. I was very happy at the way the bowlers bowled. At first when I saw, I thought the wicket was dry but it had good bounce. As a captain, I wanted Liam to play more overs. And Jitesh too. The good sign is that all the boys are performing,” said Shikhar, who was involved in a 50-run partnership at the top with Prabhsimran Singh.

‘Player of the match’ Conway would be disappointed with the loss as the New Zealander’s fifth half-century in IPL 2023 and his highest score this season — an unbeaten 92 — went in vein.

“We thought 200 was a very competitive total so a little bit disappointed that we lost this one,” said Conway.

On his successful run, Conway said he likes to keep things simple.

“We felt it (wicket) was a little bit slow when you hit the wicket. I try not to over-complicate things. I try to keep things as simple as possible.

“I try and work as closely as I can with (batting coach) Mike Hussey. Along with the other players, we have got a lot of experience in our camp. Just try to work with them,” he said.

  • ‘Remove hate, see the difference’: SC says everything said won’t amount to hate speech

‘Remove hate, see the difference’: SC says everything said won’t amount to hate speech

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday observed that everything which is said could not be equated with hate speech, stressing: “We have a common enemy, that is hate. That is the only thing. Remove hate from your minds and just see the difference.”

A bench of Justices K.M. Joseph and B.V. Nagarathna, hearing a batch of petitions seeking directions against hate speech, also considered a plea by Shaheen Abdullah in connection with an event organised by a body known as the Sakal Hindu Samaj in Mumbai earlier this month.

The top court had directed the Maharashtra government to record the event scheduled on February 5, and stressed that the government has to ensure that hate speeches are not made, while seeking a report on it.

During the hearing on Monday, the bench queried Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, did they make any hate speech, and he replied, according to his instruction: “No”.

Justice Joseph then told advocate Nizam Pasha, representing one of the petitioners in the matter, said: “Two days back we stayed the proceedings against (Delhi Chief Minister) Arvind Kejriwal… involved Section 125 of The Representation of the People Act… he brought a list of decisions of this court, as what is (Section) 123A. It is not everything is said amounts to hate speech. So, we have to be careful only in terms of (what) this section means, as interpreted by this court, will involve the offence. Correct. Bear that in mind also…”

Pasha submitted that reading of transcripts in these cases will help convince “my lords, that in these particular cases what is said amounts to hate speech”.

At this, the bench observed: “The problem is what is hate speech as such… we have to fall back on (IPC’s Sections) 153A and 295A… these are the provisions to deal with this kind of propensity… there has to be some vilification.”

Mehta said the counsel wants many things and “we were served yesterday, let us ascertain what he says is right or wrong”.

The bench told Mehta that it had asked him to give the report and video of the religious event and he said that it will be filed.

The bench asked Pasha if the meeting took place and he said that it did but was not on a large scale.

Justice Joseph orally observed: “We have a common enemy that is hate. That is the only thing. Remove hate from your minds and just see the difference. Everything will be clear.”

Concluding the hearing, he added: “We have got such a great, great civilisation… unparalleled in the whole world. Our civilisation, our knowledge is eternal.”

The top court scheduled the matter for further hearing on March 21.

The plea filed by Abdullah said: “The mass participation at these rallies being organised not just with the consent and knowledge of government authorities but with their active participation, pose a serious threat to the very foundation of our nation as a secular nation. The hatred being taught and the radicalisation of youth being carried out with such impunity will inevitably lead to communal disharmony and violence of an unfathomable scale across the country.”

The plea said rallies have been organized by the Sakal Hindu Samaj, an umbrella body of Hindu right-wing organisations under the banner of “Hindu Jan Aakrosh Sabha”. The last such rally took place on January 29 in Mumbai and more than 10,000 people attended a rally organised by Hindu far-right groups seeking boycott of goods from shops owned by Muslims and a law against “love jihad” and “religious conversions”.

“That the aforementioned Sakal Hindu Samaj will be organising yet another rally, of a similar nature, on February 5 in Mumbai. At least 15,000 people are expected to participate in the said rally. The very nature of all the previous rallies clearly indicate the kind of hate speeches that will in all likelihood be delivered at the same,” added the plea.

In October last year, the apex court had directed the Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand governments to come down hard on hate speeches, promptly registering criminal cases against the culprits without waiting for a complaint to be filed.

Mehbooba Flags the 75-Year Difference Between Tricolour Unfurling By Nehru and Rahul

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A day after warmly greeting Rahul Gandhi while joining the Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJO) along with her daughter and mother, Mehbooba Mufti wrote a series of tweets to show the net difference between Nehru’s tricolour hoisting and Rahul’s unfurling of the national flag. At the conclusion of the BJY, Rahul led a battery of Congress leaders to unfurl the tricolour in historic Lal Chowk amid unprecedented security measures.

Unlike the Nehru-presided event soon after accession, Mehbooba said Rahul’s unfurling of the national flag took place under “different circumstances” when Jammu and Kashmir has been turned into a military garrison.

“In 1948 when PM Nehru first unfurled tiranga in Kashmir amongst a sea of people, it was a momentous occasion marked by celebrations. People of J&K had successfully fought off invaders by pushing them back & thus began a new relationship with India based on mutual trust & respect,” Mehbooba wrote in a tweet.

“Nehru’s efforts ensured a Muslim majority J&K acceded to India. He assured Kashmiris & allayed concerns about preserving their identity not only in terms of religion but also culturally within India. This was achieved through constitutional safeguards guaranteed by Article 370,” she said in another tweet.

With this historic background, Mehbooba commented on the unfurling of the tricolour on January 29, 2023, by Rahul, a function she and other like-minded parties n Kashmir skipped.

“Today history stands witness as RG unfurled the same flag albeit under completely different circumstances at a time when J&K has been turned into a military garrison. Assurances given by Indian constitution have been demolished by BJP & is a complete betrayal,” she wrote. “Despite these facts, BJP claims to have resolved the Kashmir issue by the unconstitutional abrogation of Article 370. Not only have they failed to address the issue but also gifted 2000 sq km of our territory to China.”

When Pandit Nehru flew to Srinagar on November 20, 1947, he spoke to a gathering in Lal Chowk. Later, he was taken in a procession to various parts of the Srinagar city. In comparison, Rahul’s function was brief and small and was attended by his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party leaders from Jammu and Kashmir. Nehru had unfurled the flag near the Palladium Cinema, a few notches ahead of the Ghanta Ghar, where the tricolour was unruled today.
