Girl Dies, Two Injured After Jumping In River

SRINAGAR: A girl died while two others were rescued and hospitalised after they jumped in a river in Poonch district last evening, police said on Saturday.
An official said that three cousin sisters jumped in the river near Sher-i-Kashmir bridge in Poonch yesterday evening.
He said soon after the incident a rescue operation was launched and all three girls were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.
However, one of the girls was declared was dead on arrival, while two are undergoing treatment.
Deceased has been identified as Asia Kouser (18) daughter of Mohd Kabir. The other two have been identified as Amreen Kousar (25) daughter of Mohd Bashir and Sonia Kouser (18) daughter of Mohammad Arif.
Meanwhile, police have taken cognisance of the incident—(KNO)

Noted author Sara Thomas, a two-time Sahitya Akademi award winner, dies

Thiruvananthapuram: Noted author Sara Thomas died at her residence here on Friday due to age-related ailments, family sources said. She was 88.
Thomas is a two-time recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award.
Her noted work ‘Narmadipudava’ won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1979. She was also awarded the academy’s award in 2010 for her overall contribution to Malayalam literature.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly V D Satheesan condoled the death of the prolific writer and said she had taken Malayalam novel literature to new heights.
“Sara Thomas has brought to Malayalam various works that reflected life with all its complexities. Even before the strengthening of the feminist movement in Malayalam literature, her works evoked the essence of strong female characters,” Vijayan said.
V D Satheesan said the 17 novels and over 100 stories written by Thomas were an asset to Malayalam literature,
“Her death is a great loss to Malayalam literature,” he said.
Four of her works have been made into feature films in Malayalam.

Her second novel ‘Muripadukal’ was made into a movie titled ‘Manimuzhakkam’ in 1976, which won several national and state awards.
She has penned over 20 literary works including ‘Daivamakkal’ and ‘Jeevithamenna Nadi’.
Family sources said the funeral services would be held at her residence on April 1 and the burial at the Pattoor Marthoma Church cemetery here.

20-year-old youth dies in Nishat road accident

Srinagar, Mar 31: A 20-year-old youth from Hyderpora area of Srinagar lost his life in a road accident in Nishat area of Central Kashmir Srinagar district on Friday afternoon officials said.
They told that a youth identified as Moomin Bhat son of Manzoor Ahmad Bhat resident of Hyderpora met with an accident on Boulevard road in Nishat Srinagar.
They said that Moomin was shifted to nearby hospital from where he was referred to SKIMS Srinagar where he was declared brought dead.
Meanwhile police have taken cognizance of the incident and started investigation.

Attending Slain Brother’s Anniversary, Man Dies Of Heart Attack In South Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The Muslims on Friday helped perform last rites of a Hindu who was on leave to attend first death anniversary of his brother killed by militants last year in Kakran area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Balbir Singh (55), son of Surinder Singh, who was working in Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) died last evening by cardiac arrest at his home in Karkan area of Kulgam.
He was posted at Amritsar but was on leave to attend death Anniversary of his brother who was killed by militants last year.
Balbir’s family is the only Hindu Rajput family living in the village, and today his friends and the neighbours from the Muslim community took it upon themselves to help perform the last rites.
They also shouldered his coffin and arranged wood for the cremation. “He was one of us. We never thought of him as a Rajput Hindu. We arranged everything needed for the cremation,” said Abdul Jabbar, a local resident.
Meanwhile, officials of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) paid floral tributes to Balbir.

Egyptian pilgrim dies of heart attack during Umrah in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh: An Egyptian pilgrim passed away while on a fast and performing Umrah rituals at the Grand Mosque in Makkah during the holy month of Ramzan, local media reported.
Heba Mustafa, an Egyptian Umrah pilgrim from Qena Governorate, suffered a heart attack while in the mosque.
Mustafa’s husband Dr Abdel-Moneim Al-Khatib, professor of surgery at the Faculty of Medicine at Assiut University, mourned her loss on Facebook, calling her his soul mate, companion, and caregiver, and praising her as a good, obedient wife.
“I testify to God that she was a good, obedient wife who is loyal to her family and her husband’s family.”
“Heba’s passing is a great loss for my family and loved ones. May Allah rest her soul in eternal peace,” he added.
Saudi Arabia sees a huge influx of travellers who come to perform Umrah during the month of Ramzan. It is believed that performing Umrah in this holy month is more of a blessing than performing it at any other time of the year.

SRINAGAR: A 20-year-old labourer from Ramban working at Zojila Tunnel died of some un ascertained cause here in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, officials said on Wednesday morning.
An official identified the deceased as one Haroon Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Hameed, resident of Bassan Ramban.

CRPF Personnel Dies Of Cardiac Arrest

SRINAGAR: A head constable of Central Reserve Police Force died of a cardiac arrest in Srigufwara area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said here on Wednesday.
An official said that the CRPF personnel deployed at minority guard post at Mehand viage complained of chest pain and soon after he was rushed to PHC Srigufwara where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
He was identified as Suneel Surain son of Shiv lal Surain of Jharkhand.

Minor Boy Dies In Road Accident

SRINAGAR: A minor boy died after being hit by a vehicle in Baghpati Surfraw area of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday.
Quoting an official ,KNO reported the boy was hit by a speedy vehicle Baghpati area of Gund today, resulting in his on spot death.
His body was taken to PHC Gund for medico-legal formalities.
The boy has been identified as Naseer Ahmad Khatana (8) of Baghpati Surfraw.
