Cricket Legend MS Dhoni Announces Retirement from International Cricket

In a decision that has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, commonly known as MS Dhoni, announced his retirement from international cricket today. The iconic wicketkeeper-batsman made the announcement via a heartfelt statement on social media.

Dhoni, who has been one of the most successful and revered figures in Indian cricket, shared his decision with fans and fellow cricketers, expressing gratitude for the love and support he has received throughout his illustrious career.

“I am grateful for every moment I have had to represent my country. It was an honor to be a part of the Indian cricket team and serve as its captain,” said Dhoni in his statement.

Dhoni’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. His incredible leadership skills, composure under pressure, and innovative strategies on the field have left an indelible mark on the game. He is often credited with transforming the Indian cricket team into a powerhouse, achieving numerous milestones, including leading India to victory in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups, and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.

His captaincy not only brought cricketing glory but also inspired a generation of aspiring cricketers. His ability to handle high-pressure situations and his famous ‘cool as a cucumber’ demeanor made him a beloved figure both on and off the field.

The 41-year-old cricketer from Ranchi made his debut for the Indian cricket team in December 2004 and went on to represent the country in 350 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), 90 Test matches, and 98 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Dhoni’s remarkable contributions as a wicketkeeper-batsman were instrumental in many of India’s victories.

The cricketing community and fans worldwide have flooded social media with tributes to Dhoni, thanking him for his incredible contributions to the sport.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also acknowledged Dhoni’s retirement, lauding his exceptional leadership and commitment to Indian cricket.

BCCI President, Jay Shah, stated, “MS Dhoni’s contribution to Indian cricket is unparalleled. His leadership qualities and remarkable cricketing skills will be remembered for generations to come.”

While Dhoni has retired from international cricket, he will continue to be an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has served as captain and is regarded as one of the most successful leaders in the tournament’s history.

As MS Dhoni takes a bow from the international stage, the cricketing world will forever cherish the memories of his remarkable career and the legacy he leaves behind.

Bowlers need to be more aware; 10 more runs could have made a difference: Dhoni

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was left ruing the four-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in their own den, saying the bowlers need to be more aware of the situation and also indicated that the execution was probably “bad”.

CSK had a good chance of victory after posting 200 for four at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, thanks chiefly to another Devon Conway special of unbeaten 92, but the Shikhar Dhawan-led side hit the winning runs off the last ball to silence the yellow brigade on Sunday.

“We lost it in a couple of overs in the middle. You need to be aware what you need to bowl and be clear because the batters will be going for it (big hits). (Matheesha) Pathirana bowled well but other than that, we need to see if the plans were wrong or the execution was bad,” said Dhoni.

Barring openers Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad (37), none of the other batters could make an impact and Dhoni felt his team could have scored another 10 runs.

“We should be doing better with the bat. The pitch had turn, there was some turn when it hit the seam. The slower balls gripped. I think, 200 (runs) was par. Also towards the end of our innings, could we have got 10 more?” he questioned.

Winning team skipper Shikhar Dhawan said it was a special feeling defeating CSK in Chennai and praised wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma (21 off 10 balls) and Liam Livingstone (40 off 24) coming to the party.

“It feels very, very special beating Chennai in Chennai. I am very happy with the way we played. It shows great character of our side to bounce back from that loss, and leaving it behind.

“All credit goes to the team and the support staff. I was very happy at the way the bowlers bowled. At first when I saw, I thought the wicket was dry but it had good bounce. As a captain, I wanted Liam to play more overs. And Jitesh too. The good sign is that all the boys are performing,” said Shikhar, who was involved in a 50-run partnership at the top with Prabhsimran Singh.

‘Player of the match’ Conway would be disappointed with the loss as the New Zealander’s fifth half-century in IPL 2023 and his highest score this season — an unbeaten 92 — went in vein.

“We thought 200 was a very competitive total so a little bit disappointed that we lost this one,” said Conway.

On his successful run, Conway said he likes to keep things simple.

“We felt it (wicket) was a little bit slow when you hit the wicket. I try not to over-complicate things. I try to keep things as simple as possible.

“I try and work as closely as I can with (batting coach) Mike Hussey. Along with the other players, we have got a lot of experience in our camp. Just try to work with them,” he said.

IPL 2023: CSK captain MS Dhoni may miss opening match against Gujarat Titans, here’s why – Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Chennai Super Kings captain attended the IPL captain’s meet in Ahmedabad on Thursday and seemed to be in good spirits.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings, is questionable for Friday’s first game of the Indian Premier League 2023 against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad owing to a soreness in his left knee, according to The Indian Express.

According to the source, Dhoni is experiencing pain and does not want to risk further injury because of the team’s current lack of wicketkeepers. When asked for comment, though, the franchise declined.

Meanwhile, Dhoni was present at the captain’s meet held at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier that day. Rohit Sharma, captain of the Mumbai Indians, was absent due to sickness.

Dhoni has been putting in a lot of work in Chepauk in preparation for the IPL. The 41-year-old still seemed to be in peak physical condition.

It would be intriguing to watch who takes charge of the team if Dhoni is unable to play on Friday. Ben Stokes should be considered for the captaincy. In seven games last year, Ravindra Jadeja was the captain.

At CSK’s training session on Thursday, Dhoni reportedly did not bat at nets but instead spoke with Gujarat Titans coach Gary Kirsten, with whom he won the ODI World Cup in 2011.

It has also been learned that the decision on whether or not to include Dhoni in the starting Eleven will be made on the morning of the game. Devon Conway might maintain wickets if he makes the starting eleven. Either Ruturaj Gaikwad or Ambati Rayudu will wear the gloves if the New Zealand international is left off.

Dhoni’s left knee, it has been said, has been giving him trouble over the last few days. During CSK’s intra-squad encounter on Monday, Dhoni was reluctant to step out to bat and was spotted sitting with a knee cap.

As he attempted to go for a two, he would hobble and struggle to get there.

  • Will IPL 2023 be the last dance of CSK’s ‘Thalapathi’ MS Dhoni?

Will IPL 2023 be the last dance of CSK’s ‘Thalapathi’ MS Dhoni?

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: When the 16th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) gets underway from March 31, talismanic Chennai Super King skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be the only captain to lead the same side ever since the inaugural edition of the cash-rich league in 2008.

In his 16-year long journey at IPL, Dhoni has seen it all — winning multiple titles, getting banned for two years in between, handing over captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja before taking it back again — at CSK. But, as nothing lasts forever, this IPL season could be his last as a player with four-time champions CSK.

Though there has not been any official statement on this count either from the CSK management or Dhoni, there are some obvious hints at his retirement from IPL.

Handing over captaincy to Jadeja last year was a big indication that the former India captain is looking for his successor at the Chennai-based franchise. Though the move failed as the star all-rounder couldn’t handle the pressure well, it was clear that Dhoni wants to groom someone for the leadership role.

As far as his fitness is concerned, Dhoni is still one of the fittest Indian cricketers and can even give young players a run for their money. His tactical acumen is still by far the best in comparison to other skippers in IPL. However, the only concern about Dhoni is that he doesn’t play any other form of competitive cricket except IPL, so his match preparedness, which helps in taking the right decision at the right time, can be a factor.

As of now, 41-year old Dhoni, who has led CSK to four IPL titles, will captain the franchise in the upcoming season as they open their campaign against defending champions Gujarat Titans in the opening match in Ahmedabad on March 31. But it will be interesting to see whether there will be any twist in the tale in terms of captaincy as was the case last year.

It has been learnt that the Chepauk stadium in Chennai is gearing up for ‘Thala’s’ farewell match. The game against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 14 will be CSK’s last home game of IPL 2023, so it might be Dhoni’s last game for the franchise if they don’t qualify for the playoffs.

Notably, Dhoni in November 2021 had confirmed that his last T20 game will be in Chennai, but whether it will be next year or in five years’ time, he doesn’t know.

“I have always planned my cricket. My last home game in ODI was at my hometown in Ranchi. So, hopefully, my last T20 will be in Chennai. Whether it’s next year or in five years’ time, I don’t really know,” Dhoni had said at that time.

Since then, TV commentators have asked him multiple times about his retirement plans, but Dhoni has always kept his options open.

The World Cup-winning captain rarely interacts with the media. He is not that active on social media either. So it’s quite difficult to predict what will be his next move.

But if indeed Dhoni decides to hang his boots from the cash-rich league after this season, it will be an emotional occasion for the CSK fans. He might be associated with the franchise in some role in future, but that feeling will be missing for sure.
