Hyderabad: Deccan Development Society founder PV Satheesh passes away

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Founder and Executive Director of Deccan Development Society (DDS) P V Satheesh passed away, at the age of 77 on Sunday after undoing treatment at a private hospital in the city for a prolonged illness.

His last rites are to be performed on Monday at 10:30 am in Pastapur Village of Sangareddy district.

Satheesh was an icon of civil society activism in India, who, through the Zaheerabad-based organisation in rural Telangana, championed issues of agri-biodiversity, food sovereignty, women’s empowerment, social justice, local knowledge systems, participatory development, and community media.

The women’s sanghams of DDS with a steadfast adherence to millet cultivation and organic agriculture led the way nationally in offering demonstrable alternatives to the dominant agricultural paradigm. Satheesh led the recent efforts to incorporate millets into the public distribution system.

Born on June 18, 1945 in Mysore, Periyapatna Venkatasubbaiah Satheesh was a graduate of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi and started out as a journalist.

He went on to work as a television producer for nearly two decades for Doordarshan, making programmes related to rural development and rural literacy in the then-united Andhra Pradesh. He played an important role in the historical Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in the 1970s.

In the early 1980s, Satheesh, along with a few friends, initiated the Deccan Development Society in the semi-arid Zaheerabad region by collectivizing poor Dalit women in the villages for a range of programmes that together challenged hunger, malnutrition, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, gender injustice, and social deprivation.

He led the organisation for nearly four decades to become an internationally acclaimed NGO and an inspiring example that has motivated similar experiments in millet revival and promotion across the country.

PV Satheesh’s efforts at DDS resulted in improved livelihoods of thousands of poor women across 75 villages in Telangana.

He also led several national and international networks like Millet Network of India (MINI), South Against Genetic Engineering (SAGE), AP Coalition in Defence of Diversity and was also the India Coordinator for SANFEC, the South Asian Network for Food, Ecology and Culture, a five-country South Asian network with over 200 ecological groups.

He was formerly Board Member, Genetic Resources Action International (GRAIN), Barcelona, Spain and was also a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food), Brussels, Belgium.

Sateesh is also credited with the initiation of India’s first Community Media Trust, a grassroots media centre where non-literate Dalit women were trained in film-making to democratize media spaces, and also with the launching of India’s first rural, civil society-led community radio station, Sangham Radio.

He was recently honoured for his lifetime contributions to making millets a people’s agenda.

UP scribe questions BJP MLC on development issues; later held for alleged assault

    [ad_1]

A local journalist was arrested on Sunday on charges of alleged assault and abuse after he questioned a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC Gulab Devi over promised development works in her constituency. The incident happened in Chandausi of Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh.

The journalist – Sanjay Rana – reports for a Youtube channel Moradabad Ujala News. He is presently under police custody. An FIR was registered under Sections 323, 504 and 506 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code).

The video of Rana asking questions has gone viral. In the video, Rana asks the MLC regarding pakka road construction, the unavailability of government toilets, and the construction of a boundary wall of a Devi temple.

Rana was counter-questioned by the MLC’s associates who asked him if he was asking a question to the BJP leader or giving a lecture.

Rana then turned to the crowd of villagers who in unison agreed to his questions. MLC Gulab Devi assured reporter Rana that all works will be completed in due course of time.”Jab tu waha khada tha tabhi mein teri nighaye pehchan lee thi. Teri saari baatein theek hai. Sara kaam jaldi ho jayega (I understood your purpose when I saw you standing over there. I understand your problems and I assure you that all work will be completed),” Gulab Devi answered Rana.

Gulab Devi had come to Buddh Nagar village to inaugurate a check dam.

However, Rana found himself behind bars soon after, as an FIR was lodged against him based on the complaint of a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Shubham Raghav.

According to the FIR, Raghav has accused Rana of abuse and assault.

When Siasat.com spoke to Raghav, he said he was slapped by Rana.

“Rana had planted 4-5 drunk men in the crowd who were constantly hooting and creating a public nuisance. After his rendezvous with our leader Gulab Devi, I questioned him regarding his attitude toward her. Suddenly, one of his associates grabbed my collar and then Rana slapped me. I did not want to create any ruckus at that time and went straight to the police station to lodge a complaint,” Raghav told Siasat.com.

Raghav claimed that Rana does not belong to any newspaper or news channel. “He is a fake journalist. He was holding a mic of some Moradabad Ujala. I think it is a youtube channel,” he said.

  • Iran-Saudi Agreement: Why Israel Opposition Sees It A ‘Dangerous Development’?

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: As expected, the Tehran-Riyadh restoration of ties with Beijing’s help has led triggered a serious debate the world over. With most of the countries supportive of the agreement, a general perception is that the USA, the world’s most powerful nation, has been side-lined by an emerging China.

US President Joe Biden with MbS of Saudi Arabia
US President Joe Biden with MbS of Saudi Arabia on July 15, 2022. They barely shook hands.

The most vociferous reaction has come from Israel where senior opposition leaders have termed the agreement Tel Aviv’s failure.

“The restoration of relations between the Saudis and Iran is a serious and dangerous development for Israel that represents an Iranian diplomatic victory. It represents a critical blow to efforts to build a regional coalition against Iran,” Naftali Bennett, Israel’s former Prime Minister was quoted as saying by Times of Israel. “This is a resounding failure of the Netanyahu government and is the result of a combination of diplomatic neglect, general weakness and internal conflict in the country.”

Bennett was not alone. Yair Lapid, also a former Prime Minister also termed the agreement as “a complete failure” for Israel, calling it “a collapse of our regional defensive walls that we had been building against Iran.”

Iran and Saudi Arabia, barely separated by a 150-mile distance were representing two extremes in the Middles East. They were literally rivals in most of the conflict areas in the region. Besides, they were using Shia-Sunni sectarianism as part of their foreign policy in other Muslim countries.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to resume diplomatic relations after four days of intensive previously undisclosed talks in Beijing.

Israel, it may be recalled here had normalised relations with Bahrain, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates in 2020. The agreement with Iran came as Tel Aviv was negotiating a relationship with Riyadh. While these efforts are likely to continue, the possibility of kicking Tehran out of the frame may not be possible. Israel sees Tehran as its enemy and dislikes its nuclear programme and Riyadh was almost thinking on the same terms. This had led to a sort of coalition with the Middle East excluding Iran. The agreement is expected to change that.

Israel apart, the response from almost every other power centre has been positive. Some Western countries including USA and France have responded to the development with a bit of caution.

“United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed the gratitude of the United Nations Secretary-General to China for hosting the recent talks, and the United Nations Secretary-General welcomed the efforts of other countries in this regard, especially the Sultanate of Oman and Iraq,” Saudi Press Agency reported. “The UN spokesperson also stated that good neighbourly relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran are necessary for the stability of the Gulf region.”

In Brussels, the European Union (EU) has also welcomed the agreement.

“Generally speaking, we welcome any efforts to help end the war in Yemen and de-escalate tensions in the Middle East region. De-escalation and diplomacy together with deterrence are key pillars of the policy President Biden outlined during his visit to the region last year,” US NSA spokesperson John Kirby was quoted as saying. “The Saudis did keep us informed about these talks that they were having, just as we keep them informed on our engagements, but we weren’t directly involved.”

President Xi Jinping with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Mbs in Riyadh on December 9 2022
President Xi Jinping with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman (Mbs) in Riyadh on December 9, 2022

When asked by reporters, Biden said: “Better relations between Israel and their Arab neighbours are better for everybody.”

What is interesting, however, is that the agreement is being seen as a side-lining of the US in the region. A general impression is that the US was selling arms to fuel the conflicts in the region and, instead, China used trade to get the rivals closer.

Major Development: China Brokers Peace Between Iran and Saudi Arabia

The agreement is expected to have a cooling effect on at least three ragging conflicts in the region. In Yemen, Iran was supporting Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabi was funding the exiled government. In Lebanon, Iran was backing Hezbollah and Riyadh money was surviving the Sunni political class. The two countries were the proxy players in Suria where Iran supported President Bashar Assad and Riyadh was closer to the rebels.

Analysts believe t is too early to predict a major shift as the parties will have to work on the agreement. The divisive politics in the region has been played for such a long time that converting it into peace will take a long time. Those unhappy can contribute to making the agreement evaporate.

  • Major Development: China Brokers Peace Between Iran and Saudi Arabia

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In a Himalayan development that will have huge consequences for regional peace and the Muslim world, arch-rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to revive diplomatic relations after a long hiatus. What is interesting, it was China that played the broker. The two countries will unlock their diplomatic missions within the next 60 days.

1Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to resume diplomatic relations after four days of intensive previously undisclosed talks in Beijing. Photo Chinese foreign ministry
Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to resume diplomatic relations after four days of intensive previously undisclosed talks in Beijing.

“The three countries announce that an agreement has been reached between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran, that includes an agreement to resume diplomatic relations between them and re-open their embassies and missions within a period not exceeding two months, and the agreement includes their affirmation of the respect for the sovereignty of states and the non-interference in internal affairs of states,” a joint statement issued by the three countries earlier in the day said. “They also agreed that the ministers of foreign affairs of both countries shall meet to implement this, arrange for the return of their ambassadors, and discuss means of enhancing bilateral relations.”

The joint statement was the outcome of negotiations that, n the final leg, continued for five days. “The deal was abruptly announced after five days of intensive and secret talks in the Chinese capital Beijing,” Tehran Times reported. “It was signed by Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Musaad bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, the Saudi National Security Advisor, and Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Director of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee.”

“The three countries expressed their keenness to exert all efforts towards enhancing regional and international peace and security,” the statement concluded.

The two countries snapped diplomatic ties on January 3, 2016, a day after Saudi embassy was stormed by angry Iranian protestors following the execution of a Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia. On January 2, 2016, Riyadh executed nearly 50 people including prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Post-cold war between the two, oil facilities in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates came under attack by actors believed to be Iran-backed, including Yemen’s Houthi rebels, with whom, Riyadh is engaged directly.

Amid lowest ever ties and “proxy wars”, efforts at revving relations has been going on since April 2021. For the first time the two countries had a meeting in Baghdad on April 9, 2021 and the process continues and four rounds take place till ran pulls out on March 13, 2022, after fresh executions in Saudi Arabia. So far, five rounds of talks were held in Iraq, with Oman supporting the reconciliation. The final round of talks was going on in Beijing since March 6.

“The move comes as China expands its diplomatic outreach in the Arab world. In December, Chinese President Xi Jinping was welcomed in Riyadh in an extravagant ceremony as part of a visit that brought together 14 Arab heads of state,” American broadcaster, CNN reported from Abu Dhabi. “That was just months after a relatively low-key meeting with US President Joe Biden, whose relationship with Saudi Arabia has been frosty.”

China brokering peace between arch rivals is being seen as a bold diplomatic position. Interestingly, Iran was already facing music from the US and, off late, Saudi Kingdom had been lukewarm towards the major global power.

In a statement on its website, the Chinese foreign ministry quoted top diplomat Wang Yi as saying the agreement represented “a victory of dialogue and peace”.

“This shows that the Ukraine issue is not the only problem the world faces today,” Wang was quoted saying by South China Morning Post. “[We face] many problems related to peace and people’s livelihood that deserve international attention, and timely handling by the relevant stakeholders. But regardless of their complexity and difficulties, they can be resolved through dialogue on equal footing and with mutual respect.”

Wang said Chinese President Xi Jinping guided the talks from the beginning, and the agreement between the three parties was testimony to the merits of Beijing’s “recent proposal” on handling international affairs. China, it may be recalled here sources 40 per cent of its fuel requirements from the Gulf.

“China’s role in hosting the talks that led to a breakthrough in a longstanding regional rivalry highlights the country’s growing economic and political importance in the Middle East, a region that was long shaped by the military and diplomatic involvement of the United States,” The New York Times reported. “The rivalry between the two Islamic nations, which are less than 150 miles away from each other across the Persian Gulf, has long shaped politics and trade in the Middle East. It has a sectarian dimension — a majority of Saudi Arabia’s population is Sunni, while Iran’s is overwhelmingly Shiite — but has predominantly played out via proxy conflicts in neighbouring Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon, where Iran has supported militias that Saudi officials say have destabilized the region.”

Andhra CID produces skill development scam accused in court

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The Crime Investigation Department of Andhra Pradesh Police on Thursday produced GVS Bhaskar, an accused in the AP State Skill Development Corporation scam, in a Vijayawada court on Thursday, an official said.

Bhaskar, a former employee of Siemens Industrial Software, was arrested from Noida and brought to the state under a 36-hour transit remand.

“He (Bhaskar) prepared a fake DPR (detailed project report) with overvaluation, keeping a margin of more than Rs 200 crore out of Rs 371 crore (released by the state government),” the official said.

The skill development programme was envisaged under the then Telugu Desam Party government between 2014 and 2019.

According to officials, Bhaskar inflated the valuation of the project, which involved Siemens Industrial Software India and Design Tech Systems, to Rs 3,300 crore. However, the cost of Siemens Industrial Software India’s software was only Rs 58 crore.

Suman Bose, the then MD of Siemens Industrial Software India, and Design Tech System MD Vikas Kanwilkar allegedly met the then chief minister Chandrababu Naidu for the project in 2014-15.

As part of the agreement, Siemens Industrial Software India and Design Tech Systems were to contribute 90 per cent of the funds for the programme with the balance 10 per cent coming from the state government.

However, neither company spent a single penny while the state government’s share of 10 per cent — amounting to Rs 371 crore — was allegedly misappropriated, the CID stated.

It is alleged that former special secretary to the state government Ganta Subba Rao and former IAS officer K Lakshminarayana had played key roles in the programme. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) identified Lakshminarayana as a close friend of Naidu.

CID officials claimed that the misappropriated money was funnelled into shell companies such as Allied Computers (Rs 60 crore), Skillers India, Knowledge Podium, Cadence Partners and ETA Greens.

According to reports, former finance secretary Sunita had objected to the release of funds but senior government officials overruled her.

When the CID contacted the German headquarters of Siemens, it clarified that Bose had acted on his own volition, which resulted in his services being terminated, the official said.

The Enforcement Directorate has also launched a probe into the alleged scam and has issued notices to 26 people.

Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority auctions plots for over Rs 88 crore

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) on Monday generated revenue of over Rs. 88 crores by conducting an auction of plots in Medipally village, Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

Against the upset price of Rs 32000 per square yard, the auction received an average bid price of Rs. 58,730 per square yard. The highest bid price was Rs. 63000 per square yard.

TSIIC plots in neighbouring district of Hyderabad

Meanwhile, the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) will auction 326 plots located in Rangareddy, the neighbouring district of Hyderabad, on March 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. These plots are situated in Manneguda, Munaganoor, and Kawadipally.

The minimum upset price for these plots ranges from Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000. The EMD amount for Manneguda and Munaganoor is Rs 1,00,000, while it is Rs 50,000 for Kawadipally. Interested buyers can register for the plots’ e-auction under TSIIC by paying a non-refundable registration fee of Rs 1180.

These plots present an excellent opportunity for investors to explore the growing real estate market in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas.

    Registration for e-auction of plots

Interested buyers can register on the TSIIC website (click here) for the e-auction of plots in Rangareddy, neighbouring district of Hyderabad.

The plots are free from litigation and have good road connectivity. In addition, internal road and street light infrastructural works will be completed within 18 months.

For any queries, potential buyers can contact the cell phone numbers 8186870687 or 9177527213 or 9701452763 or 9441218461 or 9666665401.

Is buying a plot in Hyderabad a better option?

For homebuyers in Hyderabad, choosing between investing in a plot or a flat can be a daunting task. However, investing in a plot can offer several benefits that are worth considering, especially given the current trend of auctions of plots in Hyderabad.

Buying an open plot in and around the city assures buyers of an exclusive, independent lifestyle and complete ownership of the land. Unlike flats, plots offer the possibility of a private and more spacious living environment without sharing land space with others.

Furthermore, owning a plot gives buyers the freedom to design and construct their dream home according to their personal preferences, including a backyard and ample parking space. Additionally, plots tend to appreciate more than flats, providing a bigger resale value in the long run.

  • Our govt has accorded top priority to development of Karnataka: PM Modi

Our govt has accorded top priority to development of Karnataka: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the development of Karnataka has been a top priority of the ruling BJP whereas previous dispensations used to divert its money to outside the state.

He also said his government has worked for India’s progress by taking along traditions as well as technology.

“There was a time when people after forming government in Karnataka would take its money outside. Today, the country’s money and resources are honestly directed towards Karnataka’s development,” he said after inaugurating the “Barisu Kannada Dim Dimava” cultural festival here.

The prime minister said the state annually got Rs 11,000 crore between 2009 and 2014 when the Congress-led UPA was in power, while it has risen to Rs 30,000 crore under his government.

While the state received a total of only Rs 4,000 crore for railway projects in the five years preceding 2014, when Modi took the office, the amount in the latest budget alone is Rs 7,000 crore.

While nearly Rs 6,000 crore was spent on building highways in the state in the five years before he came to power, it is now Rs 5,000 crore annually for the last nine years, Modi said.

The face of Karnataka is changing rapidly due to the fast pace of development, he said.

Assembly polls are expected to be held in the state in May this year, and the BJP has been working overtime to retain power in the southern state.

The prime minister said his government has worked for India’s progress by taking along traditions as well as technology.

If it has rejuvenated ancient temples and cultural centres, then India has also become world leader in digital payment, he said.

His government has brought back stolen idols and artefacts while also drawing record FDI in the country, Modi said.

He also lauded Karnataka’s contribution in nation-building and paid tributes to its leading figures in different walks of life.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, several other BJP leaders, including Union ministers, and religious figures were present in the function.

Bommai said the state is rich in natural resources, culture and technology and will play a big role in realising Modi’s resolve of making India a USD 5 trillion economy.

Karnataka in the coming years will contribute a share of USD 1 trillion to the national economy, he said.

He also invited Modi to the “Akhil Bharatiya Vishwa Kannada Sahitya Sammelana” to be held next year in Davanagere district.
