Movie ‘The Kerala Story’ an attempt to destroy state’s communal harmony: Ruling CPI(M)

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: The ruling CPI(M) and opposition Congress in Kerala on Friday lashed out against the controversial upcoming movie ‘The Kerala Story’, saying freedom of expression was not a licence to spew venom in society, and the film was an attempt to destroy the communal harmony of the state.

‘The Kerala Story’, written and directed by Sudipto Sen, is portrayed as “unearthing” the events behind “approximately 32,000 women” allegedly going missing in the southern state. The film falsely claims they converted, got radicalised and were deployed in terror missions in India and the world.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post, Culture and Youth Affairs minister Saji Cheriyan said the movie was part of the Sangh Parivar propaganda to implement “their tried-and-tested method of creating unrest” among the communities by spewing venom in society.

“Kerala is a state which is known for communal harmony… This movie could be seen as an attempt by the Sangh Parivar to destroy the secular fabric of the state… This is a conspiracy to divide and create unrest in society,” Cheriyan said.

The Congress party urged the government not to give permission to screen the controversial movie as it aimed to create “communal divisions in society through false claims”.

Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly V D Satheesan rejected the claims of the movie makers and said it was clear that the intention of the upcoming movie was to tarnish the image of the state at the international level.

“Permission should not be given to screen the film which falsely claims that 32,000 women in Kerala have been converted into Islam and became members of ISIS,” the Congress leader said.

‘The Kerala Story’, starring Adah Sharma, is set to be released in cinemas on May 5.

Cheriyan said freedom of expression was not a licence to spew venom in society. “We will consider legal action against such fake propaganda,” he added.

Satheesan also said this was not an issue of freedom of expression but part of an attempt to implement the Sangh Parivar agenda of creating divisions in the society by casting aspersions on minority groups.

“No one should think that Kerala can be divided by spewing the poison of communalism,” he said, adding that the state would stand united — as has been its tradition — against this “deliberate move to foster religious rivalry”.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M), also lashed out against the film and said its trailer itself hurt religious sentiments.

The DYFI in a Facebook post alleged that the medium of cinema was being misused by the makers of the movie to create communal divisions in society and to tarnish the image of the state.

The Left outfit also sought stern action against the film.

In a press note issued earlier this week, the filmmakers announced the release date with a poster that shows a burqa-clad woman with a tagline “Uncovering the truth that was kept hidden.”

The film’s writer-director Sudipto Sen’s earlier movies are ‘Aasma’, ‘Lucknow Times’ and ‘The Last Monk’.

‘The Kerala Story’ is backed by Sunshine Pictures Private Limited, founded by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, who serves as the producer, creative director and co-writer on the film.

  • If China invaded Taiwan it would destroy world trade, says James Cleverly

If China invaded Taiwan it would destroy world trade, says James Cleverly

    [ad_1]

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would destroy world trade, and distance would offer no protection to the inevitable catastrophic blow to the global economy, the UK’s foreign secretary, James Cleverly, warned in a set piece speech on Britain’s relations with Beijing.

In remarks that differ from French president Emmanuel Macron’s attempts to distance Europe from any potential US involvement in a future conflict over Taiwan, and which firmly support continued if guarded engagement with Beijing, Cleverly said “no country could shield itself from the repercussions of a war in Taiwan”.

He added that he shuddered to think of the financial and human ruin that would ensue.

Urging no side to take unilateral action to change the status quo, he asserted the relevance of Taiwan to UK interests saying: “About half of the world’s container ships pass through these vital waters [the Taiwan Strait] every year, laden with goods bound for Europe and the far corners of the world. Taiwan is a thriving democracy and a crucial link in global supply chains, particularly for advanced semi-conductors.

“A war across the Strait would not only be a human tragedy, it would destroy world trade worth $2.6 trillion, according to Nikkei Asia. No country could shield itself from the repercussions.

“Distance would offer no protection from this catastrophic blow to the global economy – and to China most of all.”

He added: “As we watch new bases appearing in the South China Sea and beyond, we are bound to ask ourselves: what is it all for? Why is China making this colossal investment?

“If we are left to draw our own conclusions, prudence dictates that we must assume the worst.”

Overall Cleverly set himself apart from advocates of economic decoupling including some of his own backbenchers saying he wanted Britain to “engage directly with China, bilaterally and multilaterally, to preserve and create open, constructive and stable relations, reflecting China’s global importance”.

Although he said the mass incarceration in Xinjiang cannot be ignored or brushed aside, he said: “We believe in a positive trade and investment relationship, whilst avoiding dependencies in critical supply chains.

“We want British companies to do business in China – just as American, ASEAN, Australian and EU companies do – and we will support their efforts to make the terms work for both sides, pushing for a level playing field and fairer competition.”

China he acknowledged represented a ruthlessly authoritarian tradition utterly at odds with Britain’s own. “But we have an obligation to future generations to engage because otherwise we would be failing in our duty to sustain – and shape – the international order. Shirking that challenge would be a sign not of strength but of weakness.”

Invasion of Taiwan would be a ‘horror scenario’, says German foreign minister – video

At the same time he balanced this by saying: “The UK had a right to protect core interests too, and one of them is to promote the kind of world that we want to live in, where people everywhere have a universal human right to be treated with dignity, free from torture, slavery or arbitrary detention.”

He insisted, without going into details: “We are not going to be silent about interference in our political system, or technology theft, or industrial espionage. We will do more to safeguard academic freedom and research.” He did not repeat the promise by Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, to close Chinese-controlled Confucius Institutes at British universities.

He also urged China in its relations with Russia over Ukraine not to allow Vladimir Putin to trample upon China’s own stated principles of non-interference and respect for sovereignty.

He told China: “A powerful and responsible nation cannot simply abstain when this happens, or draw closer to the aggressor, or aid and abet the aggression. The rights of a sovereign nation like Ukraine cannot be eradicated just because the eradicator enjoys a ‘strategic partnership’ with China.”

ED has been ‘lying’ in court, Sisodia didn’t destroy mobile phones, claims AAP leader

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh on Friday accused the Enforcement Directorate of “lying” before the court and claimed that no mobile phones were destroyed by former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

In March, the ED had claimed before a Delhi court that Sisodia was involved in “large scale destruction of digital evidence to impede investigation” in the Delhi excise policy case and had changed and destroyed
    14 phones.

Sisodia was arrested in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise case.

    MS Education Academy

“The Enforcement Directorate has been lying before the court all this while. They said 14 mobile phones were destroyed by Sisodia but the reality is, no mobile phones were destroyed by the former deputy chief minister,” Singh claimed.

“In fact, five out of those 14 phone are in ED and CBI custody,” the senior AAP leader added.

However, ED sources said the charge sheets in this case are based on “credible evidence” and that, the court “has taken cognisance of them.”

“According to an ED report, all the phones are functioning and five out of the 14 phones have already been seized by the ED and CBI,” AAP’s Rajya Sabha member claimed.

Lashing out at the probe agency, Singh alleged that the phone numbers listed by the ED included the ones that belonged to Sisodia’s househelp, driver and other staff.

“They have made a mockery of an investigation. Those BJP leaders who have been alleging that Manish Sisodia destroyed 14 mobile phones and ED officers who defamed the best education minister of Delhi, should apologise publicly,” Singh said.

The Senior AAP leader also read out the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of the mobile phones allegedly listed by the ED.

  • Yogi vows to destroy mafias ‘nurtured’ by SP after killing of witness in high-profile case

Yogi vows to destroy mafias ‘nurtured’ by SP after killing of witness in high-profile case

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Facing flak over the brazen killing of a prime witness in the 2005 case of a BSP MLA’s murder, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday accused the Samajwadi Party of nurturing mafias and vowed to destroy them.

“The mafia whose name is emerging … is it not true that the Samajwadi Party had made him an MP… He was a mafia nurtured by the SP. Our government is working to break their back. ‘Mitti me mila denge’ (We will destroy the mafias),” Adityanath said in the Assembly.

He was speaking after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav sought to corner him over the killing and raised questions over the law and order situation, while the opposition and treasury benches traded charges.

“They (SP) are the mentors of criminals, and they have been doing it continuously. Crime flows in their veins. They have learnt nothing except crime. The entire state knows about this, and today they are giving justification,” said a visibly agitated chief minister, who spoke for more than two hours in the Assembly while replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor’s address.

He alleged that the SP was not just nurturing mafias but making them MPs and MLAs.

Chief Minister Adityanath has frequently stressed that reining in mafias and improving the law and order situation had been one of the major achievements of his government since the BJP came to power in the state in 2017.

Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, was shot dead outside his residence in Prayagraj on Friday, the police said. One of his gunners, who too was hit in the firing, died later.

An FIR was registered on Saturday against several people, including former MP Atiq Ahmed. The mafia-turned-politician is currently lodged in a Gujarat jail. Atiq was an SP MP from Phulpur parliamentary constituency (in Prayagraj).

When the House assembled for the chief minister’s reply to the debate on the Governor’s address at 11 am, the SP tried to raise the issue of Pal’s killing with chief whip Manoj Kumar Pandey demanding a discussion.

“The way in which a witness and a security personnel have been shot dead in Prayagraj, what is the double-engine government doing?” Leader of Opposition Akhilesh Yadav said.

He said that had the injured had got timely treatment, their lives would have been saved.

Speaker of UP Legislative Assembly Satish Mahana said no notice has been received for discussion, and it was decided in advance that the Leader of the House (CM) will speak on the motion of thanks.

Speaking on the killing, Adityanath said, “I would assure the House that action has been taken under the zero-tolerance policy. Its result will be out soon.”

“The mafia leader who had perpetrated this act yesterday is out of Uttar Pradesh, and became MLA and MP because of the assistance of the Samajwadi Party.

“Is it not true that in 1996, that mafia leader became an MLA from Allahabad West seat? In 2004, these people made him the Lok Sabha MP. Our government will finish them off,” he said.

Chief Minister Adityanath also attacked the Samajwadi Party over the Ramcharitmanas row and alleged that it has insulted crores of Hindus living in India and abroad by burning this sacred text.

“The office of the Samajwadi Party is running a campaign against ‘Sant Tulsidas’ jee. It (SP office) is making efforts to insult a sacred text like Ramcharitmanas,” he alleged.

The UP chief minister said Tulsidas had united the society through Ramlilas.

“The way efforts were made to tear the Ramcharitmanas, what would have happened if this had happened to another religion,” he said.

Adityanath also lashed out at the Samajwadi Party for disrupting Governor Anandiben Patel’s address, alleging its conduct was “anti-women”.

He said the behaviour of the Opposition during the Governor’s address on February 20 had “shattered the dignity of the House”.

“Those who cannot give respect to a female governor, the one who symbolises women power (‘matri shakti’), expecting them to give respect to half the population (the women), will be dishonesty,” the chief minister said.

Adityanath accused the previous Samajwadi Party government of indulging in a “game of scams” and said that a report has shown embezzlement of Rs 97,000 crore during its reign.

“In their government, there were only games and games. There was a game of laptop scam, a game of food grain scam, and the game of Gomti riverfront scam. Now, a report of one of the scams is out,” he said.

“In one tenure, there was a report of a scam amounting to Rs 97,000 crore,” the chief minister said but did not elaborate.

He said the BJP government speaks about providing houses, electricity connection, water for irrigation and employment, but the Samajwadi Party talks only about caste.

“We speak about industrialisation and ease of doing business. We strive to take forward UP, while they have a regressive approach,” he said.

He also took a jibe at the SP while referring to SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav “boys commit mistakes” remark.

Pointing out to the state guest house incident in 1995 at Lucknow, Adityanath said their behaviour had become public during that time.

To this, Akhilesh Yadav objected, saying, “Netaji has been honoured by the Centre…they should feel ashamed.”

The guest house incident took place when Mayawati had withdrawn support from the Mulayam Singh Yadav government, reducing it to a minority.

According to reports, agitated SP workers cornered Mayawati at a guest house and besides hurling abuses, allegedly cut off the electricity and water supply. As Mayawati found herself surrounded by a mob of angry SP men, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Brahmdutt Dwivedi had come to her her rescue.

The House later passed the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address.
