  • Army deployed in violence-hit Manipur, 7500 people shifted to safer places

Army deployed in violence-hit Manipur, 7500 people shifted to safer places

    [ad_1]

Imphal: The Army and Assam Rifles were deployed to control the situation in Manipur where violence broke out during a tribal agitation, a defence spokesperson said on Thursday.

So far, 7,500 people were rescued by the forces from the violence-hit areas, and given shelter, he said, adding that more people are being shifted to safer places.

The Army and Assam Rifles were requisitioned last night, and along with the state police, the forces arrested the violence by the morning, the spokesperson said.

    MS Education Academy

“Flag marches are being conducted to keep the situation under control,” he said.

A ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the ten hill districts of the state on Wednesday to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis, who account for 53 per cent of the state’s population, for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The march was organised after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Metei community.

During the march in Torbung area of Churachandpur district, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, according to police.

Several shops and houses were vandalised, and gutted in arson that lasted for more than three hours in Torbung, they said.

Urging people to maintain peace, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, “Precious lives have been lost, besides damage of properties, which is very unfortunate.”

However, the details of the deaths were not immediately available.

Singh said the violence was the result of “misunderstanding” in the society.

“The state government is taking all steps to maintain the law and order situation and additional para-military forces have been requisitioned to protect the lives and properties of the people,” he said.

“Central and state forces have been directed to take strong action against individuals and groups who are indulging in violence,” he said.

The Chief Minister of neighbouring Mizoram, Zoramthanga, wrote to Singh, expressing concern over the violence.

“As the Chief Minister of Mizoram, a lifelong neighbour that has much in common with Manipur in terms of history and culture, I am deeply pained by the violence that has flared up in parts of your State and the underlying tension between the Meitei community and the tribals there,” he wrote in the letter.

Singh said he spoke to Zoramthanga on the phone and apprised him of the present situation.

Curfew has been imposed in non-tribal dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam and Bishnupur districts, and tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts.

Mobile internet services were suspended across the state.

In the Imphal valley, houses of Kuki tribals were ransacked in several areas, forcing them to flee, police said.

Over 500 residents of the Kuki-dominated Langol area in Imphal West fled their homes, and are currently staying at the CRPF camp at Lamphelpat, police said.

Some places of worship were also set on fire in the Imphal valley last night, they said.

Meanwhile, around 1,000 Meiteis of the tribal-dominated Churachandpur district fled to various areas of Bishnupur district, including Kwakta and Moirang, they said.

Over twenty houses were also burnt in Motbung area of Kangpokpi district, police said.

Violence was also reported from Moreh near the Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district.

Lawmakers of the valley have earlier openly endorsed the demand by some Meitei organisation for ST status, alarming communities who figure in the Scheduled Tribe list.

The Meiteis inhabit the valley, which accounts for about a tenth of the former princely state’s land area. They claim they are facing problems in view of “large scale illegal immigration by Myanmarese and Bangladeshis”.

The hill districts which account for much of the state’s land are inhabited mostly by tribals — including the Nagas and Kukis who are mainly Christians — and are protected from encroachment by various laws.

Heavy security forces deployed in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Hanuman Jayanti

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Heavy security forces have been deployed in the Jahangirpuri area of the national capital to deal with any untoward incident on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti on Thursday.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday also conducted a flag march in the area.

The police earlier were not in favour of giving permission to any procession in the area, but later the activity was allowed.

    MS Education Academy

“Hanuman Janmotsav celebration at Jahangirpuri is being regulated in consultation with the organisers. We are ensuring that it takes place in a safe and secure manner,” said Special Commissioner of Police (law and order) Deependra Pathak.

The police also regularised the route for Hanuman Jayanti in the area after the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) expressed its wish to take out a procession on the occasion.

On VHP’s request, a senior police officer said: “We examined their request and we have regularised the route after making it short, and adequate security will be deployed in the district to maintain the law and order situation.”

In April last year, communal clashes broke out in Jahangirpuri during a procession that was taken out to mark Hanuman Jayanti.

At least eight police personnel and a civilian sustained injuries in the violence.

While a procession was passing through a mosque area, stone pelting had started, triggering the clashes.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has urged all states to ensure law and order during the Hanuman Jayanti.

The MHA issued an advisory to all states and Union territories to sensitise law enforcement agencies and monitor any factor that could disrupt peace and harmony in society.

“The MHA has issued an advisory to all states in preparation for Hanuman Jayanti. The governments are encouraged to ensure the maintenance of law and order, peaceful observance of the festival, and monitoring of any factors that could disturb communal harmony in society,” said the Home Minister’s Office in a tweet on Wednesday.

  • Aurangabad violence: 1 dead, 7 arrested; SRPF deployed in city

Aurangabad violence: 1 dead, 7 arrested; SRPF deployed in city

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: As many as seven persons have been arrested following a mob attack on a police station in central Maharashtra’s Aurangabad city while an injured man died in hospital, police said on Friday.

Normalcy returned to the city, recently renamed as `Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’, even as the government deployed five companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) as a precaution.

At least 12 persons including 10 policemen were injured after a mob of around 500 people hurled stones and petrol-filled bottles when the cops tried to control the situation following a clash between two groups near the Ram temple in Kiradpura locality of Aurangabad, on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

The police used tear gas and fired some plastic bullets as well as live rounds to control the mob.

Barkat Shaikh (23), Shaikh Atik (24), Saddam Shah (33), Shaikh Khaja (25), Sharik Khan (23), Syed Noor (27), all local residents, and Shaikh Saleem (25) from Buldhana district were arrested for alleged rioting, said an official of Jinsi police station where a case has been registered.

Shaikh Muniruddin (51), who had suffered injuries during the violence, died at a hospital on Thursday night, officials said, without specifying how he came to be injured.

“Security at various sensitive locations in the city has been increased. The administration has deployed five companies of SRPF and nearly 600 police personnel are on guard to maintain peace,” an official said.

Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Ajit Pawar said political parties, civil society and citizens must work towards ensuring peace in Aurangabad.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader said police are doing their work but everyone, including political parties, those in power or Opposition, civil society and common citizens should work towards ensuring peace.

Asked about the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s joint rally in Aurangabad on April 2, he said it had been planned much earlier, and leaders of the MVA constituents NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) — are working on it.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged that violence in Aurangabad and elsewhere on Ram Navami was “government-sponsored”, and the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government wanted to use the tensions as a pretext to disallow the MVA rally on April 2.

Fellow Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve contested Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel’s claim that some drug addicts were responsible for the violence.

“Drug addicts can not carry out such violence…..How can 400-500 people be drug addicts? I had got information and I had spoken about it with the commissioner multiple times. It was ignored by administration,” he claimed.

Danve also claimed that the agitation against the renaming of Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the counter-agitation supporting the renaming led to this situation. Had the agitation against the renaming not taken place, this situation would have been averted, he added.

Video: Controversy in Noida society over Namaz, police deployed

    [ad_1]

Noida: Police were deployed at a group housing society near Noida on Tuesday after a controversy erupted between Hindus and Muslims over “some outsiders” reciting Namaz there, officials said.

The row erupted on Monday evening around 8.30 pm at the Supertech Ecovillage 2 society, under Bisrakh police station limits, after around 30-40 Muslim residents of the society were offering prayers in a vacant room on the third floor above the commercial market of the society, they said.

“On being informed about some controversy in the society, officials of the local Bisrakh police station went to the spot and the Hindu community said we have no objection to all the people of our society offering Namaz but we have an objection to the fact that 6-7 people from other societies are coming to offer Namaz,” the police said in a statement.

“On this objection, the Muslim community itself decided that Namaz will not be offered at that place. Both sides agree on this. Peace and order is maintained on the spot,” the police added.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Rajeev Dixit said additional force was deployed at the site as a precautionary measure in view of the episode.

“There is no law and order situation. The matter has been resolved. The deployment of police is part of precautionary measures,” Dixit told PTI.

SED Seeks Details Of G-II, G-III Teachers Deployed To Other Schools, Zones

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The School Education Department (SED) has sought details of all Grade II and Grade -III teachers deployed to other schools or zones from their parent institutions.

An official said that the move has been initiated to streamline the pupil-teacher ratio in schools across Valley.

In this regard, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has issued circular instructions to all the Chief Education Officers (CEOs) with instructions to furnish the details of all such teachers.

The CEOs have been further directed to explain the reason for continuing the deployment of teachers in other schools or zones if the deployment period has already expired.

“Provide the information in respect of all those ReTs/Teacher Grade II/Teacher Grade III presently deployed or transferred to other schools/zones/districts,” the DSEK circular reads.

The CEOs have been asked to furnish the details of the actual appointments of all these teachers besides the name of the school or zone the teachers have been deployed.

“Furnish the name and details of the deploying authority concerning order and the period of deployment or transfer. If the deployment period has expired, give reasons for the continuation of such deployments,” the circular reads, adding that the CEOs should mention the grounds on which these teachers were deployed to other institutions.

It is pertinent to mention that the move comes weeks after the advisor to J&K Lieutenant Governor Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar convened a meeting of officers and emphasized on rationalization of teaching staff in schools.

The Advisor had enjoined upon the officers for effective rationalization of teaching staff before the onset of the fresh academic session so that no time is wasted in the process and required subject-specific teachers are placed at the schools.

An official said the department last year deployed teachers of Primary and Middle schools in government high and higher secondary schools to overcome the dearth of teaching staff in these institutions.

He said the initiative was taken to overcome the dearth of teaching staff in these schools.

“But on the other hand, the move left middle and primary schools teacher deficient,” the official said.

He said the department will collect all the details of the department and following which the teachers will be posted in schools as per the requirement given the student enrollment—(KNO)
