‘Govt forcing police to deny hunger strike’, YSRTP to knock court doors

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana party on Monday said that it would knock on court doors to get permission for Telangana Students’ Action for Vacancies and Employment’s (T-SAVE) day-long hunger strike at Indira Park, which was refused by the city police earlier.

Addressing the media after the political affairs committee meeting, YSRTP official spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao said, “This is completely shocking and a sorry picture where YS Sharmila is repeatedly being targeted because chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao is now scared of her fight and commitment towards Telangana”.

The YSRTP spokesperson said that the CM KCR’s treatment of those who raised their voices against his failures and fake promises was atrocious and dictatorial. Rao claimed that the state government is forcing the Hyderabad police to refuse permission to a T-SAVE hunger strike.

    MS Education Academy

He said that the party is tirelessly fighting for the cause and the rights of the unemployed. “Not only is the state government silent and arrogant, but they are also depriving us of our right to fight and protest,” alleged Rao.

He said that it is shameful that a democratic setup does not let the partymen enter their own party office.

“T-SAVE was proposed as a common platform and we had decided to conduct a hunger strike, for a day near Indira Park. This plea was rejected by the city police. Is this fair on KCR who owes his party’s emergence and existence to public movements and people’s protests?” he added.

“Didn’t KCR also conduct protests at Indira Park? Why different rules for Bharat Sashtra Samithi (BRS) and other parties?” added Ramachandra Rao.

He said that the YSRTP will approach the court to obtain permission to conduct the day-long hunger strike. “We have the support of 39 social organisations and other political parties as well. When BRS can carry out dharnas in Delhi, why does it pose obstacles for other parties in Telangana? Isn’t it because they are scared?” said the party spokesperson.

The hunger strike was announced at T-SAVE’s inaugural roundtable meeting on April 10. YSRTP leader Sharmila had announced that her party will stage a hunger strike for a day at Indira Park to “bring this government to task” and put pressure and force it to deliver justice to the youth.

Oklahoma officials deny Catholic public charter bid, for now

    [ad_1]

    oklahoma revenue 39564

“Funding Catholic charter schools would be unfair to taxpayers who do not share these Catholic religious beliefs,” said Clark Frailey, a co-founder of the Pastors for Oklahoma Kids public education advocacy organization, to board members as they met in Oklahoma City.

“Taxpayers will be subsidizing the indoctrination of students to a belief system that condemns their own religious faith, or lack thereof,” he said.

Walters, a nonvoting member of the charter board, pushed board members to approve the application.

“You all have heard from a lot of different folks, and you’ve heard from some radical leftists that their hatred for the Catholic Church aligns them [against] doing what’s best for kids,” Walters said. “We should distance ourselves from allowing radicals to inject their way into this and overly politicize this decision.”

Catholic Church officials formally asked Oklahoma’s virtual charter school board early this year to open the St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, accelerating months of debate over government support for sectarian education that has divided educators and Republicans.

Two Oklahoma attorneys general have issued divided, but nonbinding, opinions on the issue. Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt and Walters have supported the church’s application.

Stitt in February declared his “strong disagreement” with Republican Attorney General Gentner Drummond’s decision to scrap a landmark legal opinion that opened the door to publicly funded religious charter schools and also staked a claim in a legal fight over charters that could be addressed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

But a last-minute memorandum from the charter board’s attorney delivered just before Tuesday’s scheduled vote warned that Oklahoma’s Constitution prohibits the use of public funds for religious or sectarian purposes, and said church officials could resubmit their application for reconsideration within 30 days of receiving formal word of its denial.

With their initial denial on Tuesday, charter board members asked the church to resolve questions about its special education programs, pedagogical approach, funding and governance structure — plus the legal arguments it believes supports its case to open.

Yet as the Supreme Court weighs taking up a separate court case with significant ramifications for the country’s charter school system, an eventual final vote is expected to prompt a fresh lawsuit from the project’s supporters or opponents.

“If we ultimately prevail, it changes education entirely across the country,” Brett Farley, executive director of the Catholic Conference of Oklahoma told POLITICO last month.

“For some reason, because of this specious separation of church and state idea that’s not in the Constitution, we think somehow that we’ve got to have some sort of quasi-monopolistic setup in the educational market. And we do that to the detriment of our kids.”

BRS may deny ticket to tainted MLAs in Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad:  Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has hinted at denying tickets to MLAs who are facing serious allegations and cases. According to reliable sources, the chief minister reviewed various survey reports on the prospects of the BRS in the upcoming assembly elections.

Survey reports showed that several BRS MLAs are facing serious charges and cases. The party’s image has been badly affected due to issues like corruption and sexual harassment and people are not ready to re-elect them.

The survey report suggested that more than 30 MLAs who are facing allegations should be given four months to improve their performance and gain public popularity. Chief Minister KCR is learnt to have directed to prepare a list of all such MLAs.

    MS Education Academy

In the Adilabad district alone, three BRS MLAs are facing serious charges. These members have been elected to the assembly more than once and are demanding inclusion in the cabinet. MLAs Ajmera Rekha Naik (Khanapur), Baburao Rathod (Booth) and DurgamChinnaiah of Bellampalliare facing charges of corruption, land grabbing and receiving funds from beneficiaries of government schemes.

Chief Minister KCR and Information Technology Minister KT Rama Rao have sought a report from the district ministers about them. Durgam Chinnaiah has been in the media recently for sexually harassing a female office-bearer. It is said that funds were received from the beneficiaries in connection with the allotment of double bedroom houses, besides Rs 2 lakh for the Dalit Bandhu Scheme.

In the 2018 assembly election, KCR manage to bag 88 of the 119 seats, however, this time it does not appear the BRS can manage an equally impressive performance in 2023. Apart from the pioneering Rythu Bandhu investment support scheme and Rythu Bima insurance cover for farmers, a large investments in agriculture and irrigation have helped transform the rural landscape.

Midnight March: AISA claims 15 activists detained, police deny charge

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: All India Students’ Association (AISA), a students’ group on Monday claimed that around of its 15 activists were detained from outside the Indraprastha College for Women, where they had gathered to stage a protest against the alleged harassment of girl students during a fest last week.

Delhi Police, however, has denied the charge.

Police personnel were deployed in large numbers while the gates of the college were barricaded.

    MS Education Academy

Led by the AISA, the agitators had gathered to protest against the alleged incident and the administration’s response to it.

“About 15 AISA activists have been detained from the college gate and are being taken to Burari police station,” the students’ body’s Delhi unit president Abhigyan alleged.

A senior police officer, however, denied the allegation.

“Around 10-15 protesters had gathered outside the college gate. They were removed peacefully,” he said.

No one has been detained, the officer added.

Students at the Indraprastha College for Women, a Delhi University affiliate, last week alleged that some men scaled the institute’s boundary walls during a fest and “harassed several students”.

Scores of students have held multiple demonstrations in the last few days, demanding the resignation of the college’s newly-appointed principal over security lapses during the annual fest and its alleged authoritarian steps.

  • Rowdy-sheeter raised ‘Quran Zindabad’ for mischief, say police; deny lathi charge

Rowdy-sheeter raised ‘Quran Zindabad’ for mischief, say police; deny lathi charge

    [ad_1]

Hassan: Quran Zindabad slogan was raised during a procession by Hindu activists by a rowdy sheeter to create mischief at Belur town in Hassan district on Tuesday, according to the Karnataka police.

The police also denied resorting to lathi charge on Hindu activists during the protest opposing the recital of verses from Quran during a Hindu religious fare in Belur.

The Hindu organisations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, had taken out a procession in Belur, but the situation turned serious when a Muslim youth raised ‘Quran Zindabad’ slogan.

Hariram Shankar, Superintendent of Police, Hassan district, told IANS that around 80 to 100 people were taking out a procession towards the Belur temple. The VHP and Bajrang Dal activists were also part of the procession. However, an old rowdy-sheeter standing at a bus stand shouted ‘Quran Zindabad’ to create mischief.

“Hearing this, the crowd became aggressive. I had already deployed 150 men there along with two Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) platoons. We had more policemen than the protesters, because we were anticipating something untoward to happen. Our teams immediately picked up the rowdy-sheeter and put him in a police vehicle.

“However, the crowd gathered around the vehicle and kept shouting at him. We pushed away the people and moved the vehicle. The accused was taken to the police station. We are filing a case against him based on the complaints received by the police. He will be produced before a magistrate for creating mischief to foment communal tension in the area,” Shankar said, adding that the police did not resort to lathi charge.

When asked about the April 4 Rathotsav ceremony at the Belur temple, Shankar said that last year the same thing had happened. At the time of recital of the Quran, Hindu organisations had raised slogans but there was no obstruction.

“Similar protests are expected this time also. Since elections are around the corner, we will definitely beef up the security as much as possible to ensure no untoward incident takes place,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sharat Yalagunda, divisional convenor of Bajrang Dal, told IANS that they are not planning any protest during Rathotsav.

“We can’t take chances when 25,000 people gather at one place… We can’t risk their lives,” he said.

However, a memorandum has been submitted to the administrator of the Belur temple and tehsildar not to allow Quran recital.

“They recite that there is no god other than Allah and nothing could be believed other than the path of Allah. We will agree if they say that all gods are equal,” Yalagunda said.

“We will put pressure on the government to take legal action regarding the ritual,” Sharat stated.

Meanwhile, eye witnesses said that police did resort to mild lathi charge after ‘Quran Zindabad’ slogan was raised.

They said that Hindu activists had questioned the youth after surrounding him. The situation turned serious when the Muslim youth got into an argument with the agitators. Later, he was chased down by the protesters. Meanwhile, another group of agitators blocked the road.

Hindu activists have opposed the ritual of reciting the Quran during the historical Chennakeshava Rathotsava in Belur. The Hindu outfits maintain that the ritual should not be observed as it is against Hindu religion.

The religious fair is scheduled to be held on April 4 and the district administration is concerned with the developments taking communal turn at the time of elections.

The Chennakeshava temple is a 12th century Hindu shrine. It was built over three generations and took 103 years for the construction work to complete. The temple is expected to get a heritage tag from UNESCO.

Last year, despite opposition from Hindu activists, the Quran recital tradition was carried out during the fair. Hindu activists claim that the ritual was forcefully added in 1932.

The Rathotsav ceremony is performed over a period of two days. On the occasion, the idol of Channakeshava is embellished with gold and diamond jewellery gifted by the erstwhile kings of Mysuru kingdom. Lakhs of devotees gather for the temple fair.

Last year, the administrator of the temple had written to the Muzrai department seeking clarification over the continuation of the ritual, which has been followed for years as a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity.

Rohini Sindhuri, then commissioner of Muzrai department, had given green signal for the continuation of the ritual. She had stated that according to Section 58 of the Hindu Religious Act 2002, there should not be any interference in the rituals and traditions of the temple.

After the direction, the temple committee had decided to carry out the ritual recital of verses from the Quran.

  • Trump officials deny Chinese spy balloons flew above U.S. on their watch

Trump officials deny Chinese spy balloons flew above U.S. on their watch

    [ad_1]

    trump investigations 10804

“This never happened. It would have never happened,” Trump told Fox News on Sunday.

“I’m not aware of a single civilian national security leader from the Trump administration who heard of this,” said a Trump administration national security official, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence issues.

The backlash came after senior Biden administration officials spoke to reporters about the Saturday operation that downed the Chinese spy balloon following its one-week traversal of the U.S. A senior DoD official said that similar devices entered American airspace three times during Trump’s tenure and once before during the current administration.

“I can confirm that there have been other incidents where balloons did come close to or cross over U.S. territory,” said Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder on Saturday, declining to provide additional information.

The difference, Defense Department officials said, is that those balloons never stayed above U.S. territory for a significant period of time. When pressed for specifics, such as the date, location and duration of those instances, Biden administration officials refused to provide them citing the classified nature of that information.

Some officials did speak in generalities, however. DoD tracks “hundreds” of balloons every day, but they are typically not deemed a threat. Their presence close to or over the United States would not be brought to the attention of senior leaders unless their behavior was “completely out of the ordinary, like this one,” said one senior Pentagon official.

At lower levels, officials have tracked multiple instances of balloon activity over U.S. territories in recent years. One of the Trump-era balloons hovered over Guam, according to two U.S. officials. And in 2020, the intelligence community assessed that far-smaller balloons detected off the coast of Virginia were Chinese radar-jamming devices, according to a former senior DoD official.

Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, tweeted Sunday that the office of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had informed his office that “several Chinese balloon incidents have happened in the past few years – including over Florida.”

“Why weren’t they shot down?” he added. “And according to several Trump Admin national security officials – they were never informed of these intrusions by the Pentagon.”

The other time a similar airship appeared with Biden in the White House was last February near Hawaii.

Other senior Biden administration officials say it’s possible senior Trump figures weren’t briefed on those incursions. In some cases, devices were smaller and were only in U.S. airspace for short periods of time — making them harder to detect. And in others, some surmised that the information didn’t filter up to the top because the overflights weren’t significant enough.

The events also may not have been discovered in real-time and only pieced together recently with intelligence after the fact. One senior administration official said the events went “undetected.”

“We’ve gotten better at detection over time,” a second senior Biden administration official said, noting that those responsible for surveilling Chinese spy balloons can remain in government even with a new president in the Oval Office.

But the Trump officials adamantly deny any of this ever happened. “I don’t ever recall somebody coming into my office or reading anything that the Chinese had a surveillance balloon above the United States,” Esper told CNN on Friday.

“This never happened in the first two years of the Trump administration,” a former senior DoD official said. A senior Trump intelligence official said nothing like what transpired over the past week happened during all four years of the previous administration.

Biden’s team has given no indication it will downgrade intelligence to prove there were past examples of Chinese spy balloons above the U.S. from 2017 to 2021.

All senators will receive a briefing on the just-downed vehicle’s flight on Feb. 15, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday.

Both the former president his children “falsely deny facts they have admitted in other proceedings,” deny knowing things “ that are plainly within their knowledge,” and use defenses “repeatedly rejected by this Court as frivolous and without merit,” Kevin Wallace, senior enforcement counsel in the Attorney General’s office, said in a letter to New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron.

BBC documentary screening: JNU students allege stone pelting; police deny claims

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A high drama prevailed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Monday late evening after the students alleged that they were attacked with stones while watching a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest), Manoj C. denied reports of stone pelting.

When asked about the incident, the DCP said “I repeat again no such incident has been reported to us so far.”

“If we receive a complaint from any section of JNU, necessary legal action as deemed appropriate will be taken,” said the DCP.

Meanwhile, internet service and electricity connection at the office of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) were snapped on Tuesday after some students wanted to screen the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The JNU administration had earlier asked the students to cancel the screening of the documentary — ‘India: The Modi Question’.

The varsity administration, in a stern warning, told the students that disciplinary action may be initiated as per the university rules if anyone screens the documentary.

A section of students under the banner of JNUSU had distributed pamphlets for the screening of the documentary at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

The JNU administration was of the view that “such unauthorised activities on the campus may disturb peace and harmony” at the university. However, even after the warning, when the students remained adamant, the university administration decided to disconnect electricity and internet.

The varsity had earlier stated that no prior permission was sought from the JNU administration for the screening of the documentary.

Meanwhile, ABVP’s JNU unit president Rohit Kumar said the students’ body “welcomes the instructions to stop the screening of the documentary”.

“The BBC has been working to tarnish the image of India by making documentaries with a fake agenda,” he said.

The Central government had earlier termed the BBC documentary propaganda against the Prime Minister and the country.

Bihar: Bajrang Dal harasses Christian family, police deny incident

    [ad_1]

A Christian family was harassed and beaten up reportedly by workers of the right-wing organisation Bajrang Dal who alleged that the family was into religious conversions.

The video is from Jandaha, Vaishali district in Bihar.

A Bajrang Dal worker recorded the video saying, “Hamare Ram see jo khilwad karega, usko hum barbaad kar denge (We will destroy anyone who messes with our Lord Ram).”

As other Bajrang Dal men try to assault the man, the women of the family, including an elderly person, try to rescue him.

At one point the person recording the video says, “Pehle is budiya ko maaro (hit this old woman).”

While the women try their best to save their male relative from the clutches of Bajrang Dal, they hardly succeed.

While the younger woman pleads to stop, the man recording the video says, “Dharam parvarthan kaahe karva rahe ho (Why are you conducting religious conversions).”

The whole episode takes place in a village flanked by others including a young child.

    Video:

Siasat.com spoke to officials of Jandaha police station who termed it as a false incident. “There has been no complaint filed so far. It is completely baseless information,” a police officer said.
