Denied marriage, love-torn Mumbai boy & minor girl jump to death from hill

Mumbai: A young man and his minor girlfriend allegedly ended their lives by jumping off a hillock in a north-west suburb of Mumbai, police said here on Saturday.

The man, identified as one Akash Jhate and the 16-year-old girl studying in SSC, were neighbours in the Janupada tribal-dominated locality near Samata Nagar in Kandivali east.

While the boy worked as a housekeeper, the girl was a school student and they reportedly took the extreme step as their families were against their liaison.

The girl’s family said that when they woke up in the morning, the girl was missing from the home and they launched a frantic search for her in the vicinity, but failed to trace her.

They approached the Samata Nagar Police to lodge a missing complaint, and being a minor, the police launched investigations into a possible abduction angle.

It was only on Friday afternoon that the police were alerted of the tragedy by a local informing about two bodies found lying at the bottom of a hill there. They were rushed to the Shatabdi Hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

Though no suicide note has been recovered, subsequent police enquiries revealed that the girl claimed to have gone out with a friend, while the boy sent a message to his family saying he was leaving home and would never return.

The bodies of the deceased were sent for an autopsy and later handed over to their respective families for the last rites.

  • Morbi bridge collapse: Oreva Group MD denied interim bail

Morbi bridge collapse: Oreva Group MD denied interim bail

    [ad_1]

Morbi: A court on Tuesday rejected jailed Oreva Group managing director Jaysukh Patel’s plea for interim bail, which he had sought to complete the formalities to pay compensation to the victims of last year’s collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi town, in which 135 people were killed.

The court of principal district and sessions judge P C Joshi here dismissed Patel’s interim bail plea, which was opposed by both the state government and family members of the victims.

The Ahmedabad-headquartered Oreva Group was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ill-fated British-era bridge on the Machchhu river, which collapsed on October 30 last year, killing 135 persons and injuring 56 others.

Patel, one of the 10 accused arrested in the case, had filed a plea seeking temporary release from jail for 15 to 20 days to complete the formalities required to pay compensation to the families of the deceased and those injured in the crash as per the Gujarat High Court’s February 22 order.

The high court had directed the company to pay Rs 10 lakh as interim compensation to the kin of each deceased and Rs 2 lakh to each injured within four weeks.

During arguments in the sessions court last week, the state government had opposed Patel’s plea and said the company itself came forward with the offer to pay compensation to the victims, and it should be assumed it was ready with the financial arrangement required for the payment.

The government also submitted that the high court’s direction on compensation was for the Oreva Group and not its promoters, and the company has continued to operate even when Patel was jailed.

The lawyer for the families of the victims stated that if released on bail, the businessman may try to influence witnesses of the case.

The Oreva Group had made an offer before the high court to pay an ‘interim’ compensation totaling Rs 5 crore to the kin of those who lost their lives and those injured in the collapse.

The 10 accused arrested in the case are currently lodged in Morbi sub- jail under judicial custody.

Patel, who was shown as an accused in a chargesheet filed by the police, had been absconding for three months and surrendered before a court on January 31.

  • Asansol BJP leader denied anticipatory bail by HC, likely to be arrested

Asansol BJP leader denied anticipatory bail by HC, likely to be arrested

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday refused to grant anticipatory bail to BJP leader and councillor of the Asansol Municipal Corporation Chaitali Tiwari and three others in a case relating to a stampede during a blanket distribution ceremony in Asansol on December 14, 2022. Three people had died in the stampede.

The police had brought charges against Tiwari and the others on the basis of a complaint by the son of one of the victims. Tiwari, who is also the leader of the opposition in the Asansol Municipal Corporartion, had then moved the High Court, praying for quashing of the charges.

She also moved another bench of the court, praying for anticipatory bail.

While the High Court refused to quash the charges against her, it did grant her protection from arrest till the bench decided her anticipatory bail plea.

Among the accusations against Tiwari and the others was that they issued coupons for 6,000 blankets but purchased only 3,000.

They were apparently aware that the venue could not accommodate so many people.

It has also been alleged that they faked a permission letter from the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) and even produced it in court to obtain a favourable order.

Senior advocate Sekhar Kr. Basu, appeared for the petitioners and submitted that they had no role to play in the whole incident.

He also maintained that a local electrician had been engaged to obtain the permission from WBSEDCL and he was the one responsible for the fake document.

Advocate Phiroze Edulji, appearing for the de-facto complainant, countered these submissions and pointed out that no police permission was sought for the event and the organisers, including Tiwari, continued to distribute blankets even as the stampede took place.

They also attempted to mislead the judiciary by producing a fake permission letter and deserve no relief, he submitted. The state also opposed the anticipatory bail prayers.

After hearing all sides, the bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi turned down the petitioners’ prayers for anticipatory bail.

The court did not pass any order on the merits of the case though.

Erik ten Hag angry as Manchester United denied ‘clear penalty’

    [ad_1]

Erik ten Hag insisted that Manchester United should have scored more goals after a 2-2 draw in their Europa League play off first leg against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

The Dutchman also complained that Barcelona had escaped a gamechanging clear red card and a penalty after Jules Koundé bundled over Marcus Rashford near the edge of the area at 2-1 to the visitors, suggesting that the atmosphere might have influenced the referee, Maurizio Mariani.

“It was 2-1, a clear foul on Marcus Rashford and a penalty,” Ten Hag said. “If it’s in the box or just outside the box, it’s definitely a red card. I asked the referee: why? He said it was outside the box and it was no foul. The referee and the linesman were in a good position and if not there is the VAR. It’s not good. It’s a really bad decision. Maybe they were impressed by the pressure that Barcelona made but they can’t be at the highest level.”

Barcelona also had a penalty appeal when the ball appeared to hit Fred on the arm, with coach Xavi Hernández confronting the referee at full time. “It’s a penalty the size of a cathedral; how are you going to feel?” Xavi said. “I don’t know what they have to do to blow a penalty for handball. They looked at it as well and said no. It seems incredible to me, incredible.”

When that was put to Ten Hag and it was suggested that the two decisions evened each other out, he replied: “You can’t see it this way. The Rashford one is at 2-1 and the momentum of the game is totally different. I didn’t see the handball, so maybe it can be a mistake. Maybe it can be two mistakes. But you can’t equalise the two because of the moment in the game, in the whole round. That was an important decision where he was wrong.

“In a game when you create five or seven chances you have to finish more,” the United coach added. “We should have on this game. We need to be more clinical, finish our chances. In such a game we created many chances and there is a disappointment that we did not finish them.”

Cong claims Rahul’s plane denied permission to land at Varanasi airport

    [ad_1]

Varanasi: The Congress has claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s plane was denied permission to land at the airport here late Monday night, a charge denied by the airport authorities.

Senior Congress leader Ajay Rai on Tuesday alleged that Gandhi’s plane was scheduled to land at the Babat airport here on his return from Wayanad in Kerala.

Rai said he and other party leaders were at the airport to receive their leader but his plane was not allowed to land “at the last minute.” Gandhi then returned to the national capital.

However, Varanasi airport director Aryama Sanyal told PTI that there was no prior information about Gandhi’s arrival.

The director denied the allegation that they had refused permission for Gandhi’s plane to land.

The air traffic controller was told that the plan to land at the airport has been cancelled, Sanyal said.

The former Congress chief was scheduled to visit Prayagraj for a function at the Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Rai said.

Denied 2BHK house, man attempts self-immolation in Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A man from Choppadandi Mandal attempted to set himself on fire on Friday, over the alleged unfairness of the allocation of a 2 BHK house at the NTR statue circle in the mandal headquarters.

Living in Choppadandi for the past 50 years, Chidyala Suresh said that his name was not on the list of recipients of the double-bedroom homes and that officials had deleted it because they viewed him as an outsider. He also produced his ration card and Aadhaar card to demonstrate that he was a permanent resident.

The environment became tense and chaotic as a result of Suresh’s attempt to set himself on fire by dousing himself with fuel. Party workers raced to the spot and stopped the suicide attempt as a nearby BJP corner meeting was taking place at the time of the occurrence. As the official list of allocations for 2BHKs was leaked and publicised on social media, residents reacted in disbelief.
