  • Not a single house will be demolished for Doodhganga Restoration: Mayor Srinagar

    [ad_1]

Says SMC Not A Part Of The Current Land Retrieval Drive

Srinagar, Feb 14 (GNS): Amid protests by locals, Mayor Srinagar, Junaid Azim Mattu on Tuesday said that not a single house will be demolished for Doodhganga restoration.

In a statement issued here to GNS, Mattu said that he had a detailed meeting with the residents and community elders of various localities and colonies on the stretch of Aloochi Bagh to Chattabal Doodhganda Rejuvenation and Restoration Project on Monday and that he assured them that “no colonies will be displaced, nor any houses demolished including the downtrodden colonies and slum settlements on this stretch.” The meeting was also attended by Commissioner SMC and CEO Srinagar Smart City, Athar Aamir Khan, SE City Drainage in addition to senior officials and engineers.

“The Mayor assured the local residents that the Doodhganga Canal Restoration and Rejuvenation Project was a vital flood mitigation project that would first and foremost benefit the residents and colonies in Aloochi Bagh, Haft Chinar, Batamaloo and Chattabal,” the statement reads, adding, “The Mayor, while condemning traditional mischief mongers and agent provocateurs who were provoking the people and spreading misinformation, assured the residents that not a single residential colony, including slum structures, would be disturbed or affected by this project.

He said the ‘Public Notice’ that has been issued concerns encumbrances, obstacles and physical encroachments within and on top of the canal and does not pertain to residential colonies, houses or structures. “Not a single house will be demolished by this project. It is my assurance to the residents that this won’t be allowed,” he said, adding, “Contrary to what is being wrongly peddled by vested interests, this restoration project will resolve the longstanding issue of localised urban flooding and water-logging in these areas — benefiting the locals of these areas.”

The Mayor said that attempts to connect SMC with the ongoing land eviction and retrieval of State land drive were “misleading”. “SMC is not involved in the ongoing drive in any way, shape or form – neither at the policy level nor at the execution level,” he said, adding, “A recent statement issued by a particular political party is a shameful attempt to derive political dividends by misleading the downtrodden sections of the society.” The administration’s ongoing drive does not involve the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and as the Mayor of Srinagar, “I have formally urged the administration to put in place a humane and sympathetic policy of regularisation, especially for the poor and downtrodden sections of our society – keeping in view the fragile and sensitive economy of J&K.” (GNS)

45 Shops Linked To Health Sector Sealed In Banihal, Two Demolished

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The government on Sunday sealed almost 45 shops in Banihal and most of them were either pharmacies or diagnostic centres. The market existed on the state land in, what is being called “hospital gali” and has mostly been sealed and taken over by the local municipal committee.

Reports reaching from the highway town said that authorities demolished a shop and a ‘tin shed’ located n the same lane. All the shops we linked directly or indirectly with the health sector.

Authorities had informed the shopkeepers in anticipation that their shops are being sealed and they had removed their belongings enabling officials to seal the market. Local residents said the decision will seriously impact healthcare sector and will result in jobless of around 400 people. One report said the sealed shops include 22 pharmacies – shops were medicine are sold, nine clinical laboratories and five optical shops. One report said some of the facilities that were being provided by these shops are missing in the hospital.

Two political activists were taken into preventive custody before the start of the drive to retrieve state land along the sub-district hospital road amid tight security arrangements, they said.

Fearing disruptions, police had taken into custody two local activists, Mohammad Ilyas Wani of the Democratic Azad Party (DAP) and Qaiser Hamid Sheikh of the Congress party.

The anti-encroachment drive was a joint effort led by the civil administration and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. There were symbolic protests as well.

Officials said the market had come illegally on the state land on the banks of a stream. The encroachments that were undone include part of the premises taken over by a private school.

Local businesses believe that since the shops have been formally taken over by the Municipal Committee, these may, in the coming days, be reallocated to the shopkeepers who were running their business from these shops and did not own them. Authorities, however, are tight-lipped, making no promises. They left after sealing the shops and pasting a paper on every one of them suggesting the property belongs to the MC Banihal.

Banihal: At least 45 shops were sealed and two others demolished during the ongoing anti-encroachment drive in Banihal township of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Sunday, officials said.

A team of revenue officials led by Tehsildar, Banihal, Imtiyaz Ahmad had on Saturday served notices to the owners of the shops, mostly pharmacies and clinical laboratories, triggering a protest.

The shopkeepers and local residents staged a sit-in at the tourist hostel, however, a police team swooped on the protesters around midnight and two sarpanches — Mohd Ilyas Wani of Democratic Azad Party (DAP) and Qaiser Hamid Sheikh of Congress — were taken into preventive custody, officials said.

Additional security personnel were deployed across the town on Sunday morning and the notified shops were sealed while two were demolished.

The shops that were sealed, included 22 pharmacies, nine clinical laboratories and five optical shops, officials said.

“The shops have come up on the encroached state land over the years and were handed over to Municipal Committee Banihal after being sealed as per the law,” the Tehsildar said.

He said eight marlas of state land, under illegal occupation of a private school, were also freed during the drive which is successfully going on and so far 40 per cent encroachment has been removed.

President, Beopar Mandal of Banihal, Pervez Hamid Sheikh requested the district administration to take into account the plight of poor shopkeepers who have lost their livelihood.

“We are thankful to the administration for providing enough time to the shopkeepers to vacate their shops which were not razed,” Sheikh said.

More than 300 people have been rendered jobless by the closure of nearly 50 shops, he said.

“We appeal to the government to take into account the plight of poor shopkeepers and their dependents and give back possession of shops to their owners as soon as possible,” he said.
