  • Several women wrestlers write to PM Modi, IOA, SAI demanding fair Asian Games trials

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several women wrestlers, including medal winners from Commonwealth Games and Asian Championship, on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the ad-hoc panel running the WFI, requesting “fair trials” for Asian Games amidst reports that the six protesting grapplers may be given exemption.

    BookMyMBBS

The 24 women wrestlers from Sir Chhotu Ram Akhada in Rohtak, who also wrote to SAI Director General Sandeep Pradhan, have conveyed that they won’t accept two-stage trial or any another relaxation given to the protesting grapplers.

The IOA-appointed ad-hoc panel has announced that Asian Games trials will be held on July 22-23 but did not reveal the criteria.

    MS Education Academy

The wrestlers are even preparing to hit the roads for a fresh protest and approach the judiciary if any discriminatory decision is taken by the IOA ad-hoc committee.

Panel head Bhupender Singh Bajwa had on June 16 conveyed to the six protesting wrestlers — Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat, Satyawart Kadian and Jirender Kinha — that they will have to compete in just one final bout against the winners of the initial trials.

According to sources, the ad-hoc panel is deliberating over a criteria which will exempt current Olympic and World Championship medallists from the trials, which will benefit Bajrang, Vinesh and Ravi Dahiya.

The IOA has to submit the names of the participating wrestlers by July 23.

“Even if only three Olympians were to be given concessions, this would be wrong to the youngsters,” the wrestlers said in the letter that was also marked to Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

“We feel this decision (two-stage trial) is unfair and unjust to the other emerging wrestlers of the nation as we have to fight and win approximately four to five bouts and one more qualifying bout against one of these wrestlers and in contrast they have to just fight single bout to qualify which is biased, unjustified and against the spirit of right of equality.”

The letter further read, “India is a democratic country… and under Article 14 of the Indian constitution, every citizen must be given the right to equality.

“Indian constitution is liberal but the decision taken by the committee is against the fundamental rights of an individual’s opportunity as we are not getting equal opportunity and these six wrestlers are given special concession and benefits in the trials without any proper reason and it is highly opposable and objectionable.”

“We request you to reconsider this decision while keeping the rights, appeals, hope and future of all the talented emerging wrestlers in the account (sic).”

Manisha, winner of a bronze medal in the Asian Championship (Astana) and gold at the UWW Ranking Series event (Bishkek) this year, Pooja Gehlot, winner of a bronze medal at the Birmingham CWG along, along with 22 others, have signed the letter.

The signatories also include junior world championship bronze winner Ritika, U23 World Championship bronze winner Mansi, U23 Asian Championship silver medallist Rajni.

Talking to PTI, Manisha said, “There should be just one trial. They can beat us in competition and go to Asian Games. At least we will have satisfaction that they beat us. It is difficult to maintain weight. Two-stage trials is not acceptable.”

“Lot of athletes are with us. There should be fair trials,” she said.

Sarika, winner of bronze medal at the junior Asian Championship said, “If we have to protest or go to court, we are ready for everything. Wrestlers from Jalandhar, Sonepat, Jind and Hisar have also written letters to IOA and other authorities.”

Jagdish Dhanda, a coach at Sir Chhotu Ram Akhada in Rohtak also said that they will not accept any discrimination.

“From the first day we were opposing any such move. There are several junior and sub junior wrestlers who fear that it might happen to them also, so they have also come forward and signed the letter,” he said.

It is unclear if the six protesting wrestlers, who are in different parts of the world for training and competitions, will come back to India for trials this month.

  • The Breakdown | Life after rugby: as game feels pinch, players face demanding transition

The Breakdown | Life after rugby: as game feels pinch, players face demanding transition

    [ad_1]

The final number of casualties is not quite confirmed but it is guaranteed to hurt. According to Christian Day, general secretary of the Rugby Players’ Association, at least 100 current Premiership squad members will shortly be left without a contract, victims of the stark financial realities gripping the English club game. “The market is incredibly squeezed,” says Day. “We’re looking at 10 senior players per squad not being there next year.”

Maybe one or two will be fortunate and find a summer trial somewhere. The implications of the Premiership’s reduced £5m salary cap, however, threaten to wreck a lot of dreams. Some clubs have been shedding truckloads of academy pros, others have made derisory offers that no full-time athlete could reasonably accept. “The last two years have been the most testing and challenging for rugby union as a professional sport since the early days when everyone was flying blind,” says Day. “We’re trying to help with that.”

But even as Day spells out his determination to negotiate for a proper minimum wage and a benevolent fund for past players, a much bigger truth is increasingly hard to ignore. There is foolhardy and then there is the bone-headed stupidity of those who think pro rugby alone will set them up for life. Rarely has there been a worse time to put all your eggs in rugby’s increasingly wobbly basket.

To the RPA’s credit, things have come on slightly since Day started as a young pro in 2003. Back then there was barely any support or pastoral care for those suddenly deemed surplus to requirements. This year 91% of players in the league expressed an interest in developing themselves beyond rugby and 62% of those enrolled on educational or vocational courses. More than 100 education grants have also been approved to help players prepare for life outside the dressing room bubble.

In many ways, though, that is the easy bit. Tick the box and on we go. Rather harder for those tiptoeing back into the real world is to replicate the weekly adrenaline rush to which they have become addicted. Or, tougher still, to peel back the layers of their institutionalised past and find something that might yield lasting happiness and long-term fulfilment.

Luckily there are people like Geoff Griffiths around to offer a helping hand. In a former life, Griffiths played in the back three for, among others, Blackheath, Esher, Plymouth Albion, Rotherham and Bedford. These days he is the owner and chief executive of the digital marketing agency Builtvisible and also specialises in assisting players who find themselves at a crossroads in their lives.

Together with his sister Nicola, a clinical psychologist, he has launched Tackling Transition to help professional athletes to take control of their transition out of sport. He reckons there remains a significant need for it. “I’ve got a couple of retired Premiership players who say they wish there was something like this before. One of them was bumbling his way through in a dead-end job that he didn’t really care about. Another told me he felt like he was just an academy player again. One minute he’d been playing in front of 80,000 people for Harlequins, the next he was stuck in an office somewhere.”

Everyone knows playing rugby cannot last for ever but, equally, it is possible to be pigeonholed once you stop. “What happens in rugby, in particular, is that people get pushed into finance or brokerage … things where you’re classically going to be good at because of your transferable skills.” But what if they had thought about things a little bit more and stopped to consider what their real passion might be? Acting? Writing? One of Griffiths’s former teammates is the BBC’s Ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse, with whom he played at Rotherham, Plymouth and Esher. Another is Ben Mercer, author of the excellent rugby book Fringes. All of them were sufficiently smart to understand the need to look beyond rugby even when they were fully immersed in it.

Something else Griffiths mentions strikes a chord. He spent eight years playing in the Championship and National One and reckons the best times he had were at Blackheath in National One. “I had a balance because I was building a career and using rugby as an escape rather than it being all-consuming. As a result I played better rugby. Being more well-rounded is obviously of enormous benefit and will actually improve your performance because you can switch off. A more balanced person is a better athlete.”

It became obvious to him, too, that players from Premiership clubs who pitched up on loan often fell into one of two categories: those who made the effort to engage and socialise and those who were simply marking time. “You knew the ones who would be successful people and you knew the ones who were chasing a rugby career. The former are doing better now than the ones who maybe got a handful of Premiership starts but were never going to be world-beaters. The interesting thing with rugby is that the financials aren’t really good enough to justify being all-in. Who’s making forever money in rugby?”

    skip past newsletter promotion

It is among the lessons he now tries to pass on, to avoid players ending up completely lost. “When [France’s] Christophe Dominici passed away in 2020 it really brought it home. I don’t think that’s the norm but there are countless stories of people struggling after their career is over. I think psychology is becoming a bigger thing on the performance side but there is a gap when a player’s career ends. Brutally, that’s not something the clubs are tasked with doing.”

Which is why Griffiths wants to try to alert them to their hidden potential. “I was talking to another guy who has just retired from the Premiership. He was saying that a lot of stuff around transition comes across as very negative. We want it to be a positive. The empowerment thing is massive. The better you understand yourself while you’re in rugby, the better armed and equipped you are. And the sooner you do something the better. Anything’s better than it being too late.” Plenty to ponder there, even for those still clinging to a Premiership contract.

Congress president Kharge writes to PM Modi demanding caste census

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded an up-to-date caste census.

In his letter, Kharge said in the absence of an updated caste census, a reliable data base so very essential for meaningful social justice and empowerment programmes, particularly for OBCs, is incomplete.

“I am writing to you to once again place on record the demand of the Indian National Congress for an up-to-date Caste Census. My colleagues and I have raised this demand earlier in both House of Parliament on a number of occasions as have leaders of many other Opposition parties,” the Congress chief said in his letter.

    MS Education Academy

“You are aware that for the first time the UPA Government conducted a Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) during 2011-12 covering some 25 crore households. For a number of reasons, however, the caste data could not get published even though Congress and other MPs demanded its release after your government came to power in May 2014,” he said.

“In the absence of an updated Caste Census, I am afraid a reliable data base so very essential for meaningful social justice and empowerment programmes, particularly for OBCs, is incomplete. This Census is the responsibility of the Union Government,” Kharge said.

In the letter dated April 16, he also pointed out that the regular decennial census was to be carried out in 2021 but it has not yet been conducted.

“We demand that it be done immediately and that a comprehensive Caste Census be made its integral part,” Kharge said.

Sharing Kharge’s letter to the prime minister, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted “Jitni aabadi, utna haq! Congress President @kharge -ji has written to PM demanding that the decennial Census that should have been conducted in 2021 be done right-away, and a Caste Census be made its integral part. This will put social justice & empowerment on a firmer footing”.

Addressing a rally in Katnataka’s Kolar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday had also dared Prime Minister Modi to release the 2011 caste-based census data in public domain and also demanded the 50 per cent cap on reservation be removed.

“UPA in 2011 did the caste-based census. It has the data of all the castes. Mr Prime Minister, you talk of OBCs. Make that data public. Let the nation know how many OBCs, Dalits and tribals are there in the country,” Gandhi had said at the Congress’ ‘Jai Bharat’ election rally in Kolar in the run-up to the May 10 Karnataka polls.

  • Delhi: 2 BJP leaders booked for demanding Rs 15 lakh from businessman

Delhi: 2 BJP leaders booked for demanding Rs 15 lakh from businessman

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: An extortion case has been filed against two BJP leaders in Delhi, Siyaram Shakya and Dheeraj Pradhan, for allegedly demanding Rs 15 lakh from a businessman to let him construct his house.

The FIR was lodged with the Dabri police station in Dwarka district on March 29. Pradhan is said to be the Mehrauli district vice-president of BJP, while Shakya is reportedly a local BJP leader.

The businessman, Chaman Prakash Saxena, a resident of East Kidwai Nagar, has alleged that he was asked to pay Rs 15 lakh by the accused to settle their score.

“I was lawfully constructing a property at Raja Puri in Uttam Nagar. But Siyaram Shakya fabricated a civil case against me. When I tried to resolve the issue, Shakya asked me to come the office of Dheeraj Pradhan, where they demanded Rs 15 lakh from me to settle the matter out of court. Pradhan is facing court trials and was held guilty is one of the cases,” Saxena alleged in the FIR, which has been accessed by IANS.

The complainant alleged that he was in fear that the accused may harm his family members.

Saxena also said that on March 6, a civil judge in Dwarka had vacated a stay order and directed him to repair the property of Shakya.

“I didn’t damage their property. I just wanted to resolve the matter. I had asked Shakya to show where his property was damaged so that I could get it repaired, but he threatened me,” Saxena alleged.

He also said that on March 11, when he resumed construction work of his own property, he was again threatened by Shakya to pay Rs 15 lakh or face dire consequences.

According to sources, no arrests have been made in the case so far.

TMC MPs hold protest demanding Adani’s arrest in Parliament

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Donning caps printed with images of Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trinamool Congress MPs on Tuesday held a protest in the Parliament complex here demanding the arrest of the businessman and alleged that the central government was shielding him.

The party, which had not participated in protests held by the Opposition on the Adani issue recently, again stayed away from the one held by the Congress and other parties in the Parliament House corridor to press for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe and chose to hold its demonstration separately.

“The partnership with the BJP is helping Adani. There is an understanding between Modi and Adani and that is why Parliament has failed to function,” alleged TMC Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

TMC MPs were seen wearing caps with a picture of Adani and Prime Minister Modi printed on them during the protest. Party leaders claimed that spent days trying to get around 100 such caps printed as no printer in Delhi was ready to do it.

The party finally got them printed in a shop in Uttar Pradesh, a leader said.

“Adani should be arrested. Modi is trying to protect Adani in the one lakh crore rupees scam. This is also the reason why they are not allowing any discussion in Parliament.

“TMC leadership has already demanded that the 10 non-BJP states should begin their own probe into this and ensure that public money is not misused,” said TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.

Bandyopadhyay demanded that the prime minister should speak on the issue.

“PM Modi should explain this in the House how LIC-SBI money ended up with Adani,” he said.

TMC leaders shouted slogans like “Desh ka hua bura haal, Modi bane Adani ki dhaal!” and held placards.

“Under the patronage of PM, India has become a safe haven for capitalist cronies who act with apparent impunity to loot the masses,” Bandyopadhyay alleged.

“The cat is out of the bag: @BJP4India is an apologist for financial fraud. Their attempts to stall Parliamentary discussions on the Adani issue are proof of their complicity. We refuse to sit back and watch our financial institutions be bled dry and the common man be looted,” the TMC tweeted from its official handle.

The TMC had also skipped a march of the Opposition to the Enforcement Directorate office earlier last week.

  • TSPSC leaks: Telangana BJP chief on one-day hunger strike demanding judicial probe

TSPSC leaks: Telangana BJP chief on one-day hunger strike demanding judicial probe

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party president Bandi Sanjay Kumar will sit on a day-long hunger strike at the state party headquarters on Friday demanding that the state government order a judicial inquiry by a sitting high court judge into the leakage of the examination paper of the recruitment test conducted by the Telangana State Public Service Commission.

Sanjay also demanded the immediate sacking of state information technology minister KT Rama Rao from the cabinet, as his IT department had ‘failed to prevent the leakage of the question paper’, besides a complete overhaul of the TSPSC and payment of compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each of the unemployed youth who had suffered due to cancellation of the examination.

Before commencing the hunger strike, the BJP president would go to the Telangana martyrs’ memorial at Gun Park in front of the state assembly at 10 am to pay homage to the martyrs. “This is to highlight the fact that the K Chandrasekhar Rao government has belittled the sacrifices made by over 1400 youth for the sake of Telangana state,” a press note from BJP said.

Later, Sanjay would sit on a protest hunger strike from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm at the party office, the party said.

On Thursday morning, the BJP president went to Chanchalguda Central Prison to call on the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha leaders, who were arrested while protesting at the TSPSC office on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters later, Sanjay strongly condemned the lathi-charge and arrest of BJYM state president Bhanu Prakash and others who were doing a ‘peaceful’ protest over the leakage of the TSPSC question paper. “While the accused in the leakage case are being given the royal treatment, those who took part in the protests are subject to harassment,” he alleged.

The Begum Bazaar police arrested seven activists of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha for rioting and damaging public property at the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) during the protest on Tuesday.

Sanjay sought to know how the question paper was leaked without the knowledge of the TSPSC chairman. “In fact, the TSPSC officials should be prosecuted first. The constitution of an SIT is just a hoax as it would not serve any purpose. Many SITs constituted in the past did not yield any results,” he said.

Stating that the entire episode was a ‘drama’ enacted by KCR’s son KT Rama Rao, Sanjay wondered why the state government was hesitating to order a judicial probe by a sitting high court judge.

Stating that the ‘failure’ of KTR is clearly evident in the entire episode, Sanjay said the Information Technology department, headed by KTR had miserably failed to prevent leakage of the question paper. “It is shameless on the part of KTR to say that the BJP has a role in the leakage, on the pretext that one of the arrested Rajasekhar has connections with the BJP,” he said.

He pointed out that Rajasekhar had been an employee of Telangana State Technology Services, which is part of the IT department headed by KTR. “What is KTR doing instead of identifying such people? He is unfit to be a minister,” he said.

Sanjay said Rajasekhar had nothing to do with the BJP. “Many people come to me to take selfies. Does it mean I have connections with all of them?” he asked.

He alleged out that the mastermind behind the question paper leakage Renuka has connections with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. “Her mother is a sarpanch of BRS. Her brother is a BRS leader. So, for whose benefit the question paper was leaked?” he asked.

He demanded that all those, including the TSPSC chairman, be sacked and stringent action be taken against them. “The government should conduct recruitment tests as scheduled,” he said.

  • Telangana: Bandi writes to KCR demanding new PRC for employees

Telangana: Bandi writes to KCR demanding new PRC for employees

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday wrote to chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao demanding for constitution of a new Pay Revision Commission (PRC) and the implementation of revised pay scales for employees and teachers from July.

In the letter, Bandi Sanjay said that he learned that the state cabinet would be meeting on March 9 to discuss various issues and take crucial decisions.

“The biggest issue that needs to be discussed immediately is the constitution of PRC to decide on the pay revision of state government employees and teachers, who played a major role in the movement for separate Telangana state by stalling the administration for nearly 42 days,” said the BJP state president.

Apart from pay revision, Sanjay said the cabinet should also discuss the implementation of pre-poll promises made by KCR.

“The chief minister has a moral responsibility to protect the rights of the employees but he is cheating them at every stage,” he alleged.

Sanjay said that the validity of the first PRC, headed by CR Biswal, would expire by June 30 and the new PRC would have to be implemented from July 1.

He further said that the government did not release the fourth Dearness Allowance (DA) instalment until now.

“The first PRC report, which was supposed to be implemented with effect from July 1, 2018, had been delayed for nearly 21 months. Even the arrears have not been paid in several cases,” said Sanjay.

The BJP president said that the KCR government did not appoint a new PRC till now. “This is nothing but cheating lakhs of employees and teachers. How can revised pay scales be implemented without any committee report?” he asked.

Sanjay alleged that the government was trying to avoid revision of pay scales by deliberately dodging the appointment of a new PRC.

“These kinds of delaying tactics are not acceptable. This is a huge injustice to the employees. BJP will agitate on their behalf,” he said.

He demanded that the government appoint a new PRC immediately and get the report within three months and implement revised pay scales from July 1.

Sanjay alleged that the government is not paying salaries to the employees and teachers on the first day of each month.

“On the other hand, he ruined their lives by transferring them indiscriminately in the name of GO 317 implementation,” he said.

“Nearly 99 percent of the promises made by the chief minister before the last elections have not been implemented,” he said.

Sanjay said that the promises which were yet to be implemented are crop loan waiver, supply of free urea to farmers, one job in each family, payment of unemployment allowance, implementation of Dalit Bandhu for all Dalits, three acres of land to Dalits, Girijan Bandhu, Chenetha Bandhu etc.

“We demand that the forthcoming cabinet should discuss all these promises and take appropriate decisions. Otherwise, the BJP will take up people’s movements in a big way and the government alone would be held responsible for the people’s revolt,” Sanjay said.
