  • Kashmir’s Nadru In High Demand: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: During his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the increasing popularity of lotus stems in Kashmir, referred to as ‘Nadru‘ by locals.

“Whenever we talk about Kashmir or Srinagar, the pictures of the mountains and Dal jheel come in front of us. We all want to enjoy the scenic beauty, but there is one more speciality attached to it. Dal jheel is also known for its delicious Lotus stems. They are known by different names in the country, and in Kashmir, they are referred to as ‘Nadru’,” he said.

He further stated that in response to the growing demand for Nadru, farmers have established a Farmers Producer Organization (FPO), which currently comprises 250 farmers.

“Today, the farmers are able to export the FPOs to foreign countries. Recently, they sent two sets to UAE. This is not just taking up the name of Kashmir, but also increasing the income of the farmers,” he said.

The Prime Minister also discussed the farmers who have transitioned to cultivating lavender and the advantages they are obtaining through the government’s Aroma Mission initiative.

“Another effort by the Kashmiri farmers is spreading the fragrance of its success. Actually, there is a small town Bhadarwah, in the Doda district of Jammu & Kashmir. The farmers there traditionally used to grow maize, but some farmers decided to do something innovative. They shifted towards floriculture. Under this, around 2,500 farmers are growing lavender. They have also benefited from the Aroma scheme of the government. This has increased their income several times. And today, along with the lavender, the fragrance of their success is also spreading,” he added.

Maha: Hindutva members demand exile of Muslim family over pro-Aurangzeb WhatsApp status

    [ad_1]

After reports of a young Muslim man being arrested by the Vadgaon police in Maharashtra emerged, Hindutva groups took out a rally in Sawarde village demanding the accused’s family be exiled.

According to a local Marathi news Lokmat, the accused – Mohammed Momim – had put up a Whatsapp status on Mughal ruler Aurangzeb in reference to the recent name change of the city of Aurangabad.

Momim’s status was widely shared angering Hindutva members of his village. They staged a sit-in protest demanding strict action against Momim.

Mohammed Momim was finally arrested by the police on Sunday under Section 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, matters did not end here. Hindutva organisations took out a bike rally demanding the Sarpanch of the village declare Momim’s family as outcasts. They wanted the family to leave the village for good.

However, the Sarpanch refused to bow down to their demands. This angered the Hindutva organisations who went ahead and burnt a sugar sack warehouse as well as a tempo, allegedly owned by one of Momim’s relations.

They then reached the Vadgaon Police station and staged a demonstration demanding sedition charges be levelled against Momim.

As tension spiraled in Sawarde and the nearby villages of Minche and Peth Vadgaon, it was only after the police came to the spot did the mob calm down.

However, when Siasat.com spoke to a Vadgaon police officer, the officer declined to comment and said the reports of a Hindutva bike rally were false.

“Everything is peaceful in the area. No bike rally was held,” the officer told Siasat.com.

Centre refuses to buy rice from Telangana despite demand: Agri minister

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Agriculture minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy said the central government is refusing to purchase rice grains from Telangana despite the lack of rice grains in the country.

“Central government says that there is no rice in the country at present. Telangana is the largest producer of paddy and the crop is being cultivated on 56.44 lakh acres in Yasangi. However, the Centre is refusing to buy rice grains from us,” he said while attending the Kisan Mela on Saturday.

The Kisan Mela was conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP).

He alleged that the Centre does not have scientific estimations of the crops that need to be cultivated. “The crops being cultivated in the various parts of the country should be estimated and the growth of crops that are needed should be facilitated based on these numbers,” Singireddy said.

The agriculture minister said that there is a lot of demand for medicinal plants in the international markets. “Cultivation of medicinal plants should be encouraged as without medicinal plants there will be no medicines for the 800 crore people in this world,” said the BRS leader.

Singireddy said that cosmetic products made from chemical ingredients are harmful to health and natural medicinal plants can give a higher quality of life. “Natural products are gaining popularity in society. China dominates the global market for medicinal plants. Farmers should be encouraged to grow the crops that are in demand,” he said.

  • Hyderabad: OU students demand overhaul of TSPSC, Rs 1 lakh compensation

Hyderabad: OU students demand overhaul of TSPSC, Rs 1 lakh compensation

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Tensions broke out near the main library building of Osmania University (OU) as hundreds of students protested demanding the overhaul of the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) over the paper leakage row.

The rally was conducted from the library building to the Arts college. Various student parties and unemployed youth demanded an investigation by a sitting judge of the Telangana High Court as well as a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each unemployed candidate of the TSPSC exams.

OU student Ramana shaved his head on the road to show his dissatisfaction with the cancellation of the Group 1 exam that was announced by the commission on Friday.

“The fact that the paper leakage gives one candidate undue advantage over another is in itself a violation of my Fundamental Rights,” said Pottepaka Sandeep, a Group 1 qualified candidate and political science research scholar.

He said that examinations conducted by state public commissions are prone to paper leakages due to the presence of political patronage.

Speaking to Siasat.com, state vice-president of Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) Gaddam Shyam said that it is hard to believe the commission was not aware of the leak done by its own employee.

Holding the entire board responsible for the mishap, Shyam demanded the formation of a new commission.

The All India Students’ Federation (AISF) general secretary Nelli Satya spoke about the hardship a candidate goes through while preparing for the examinations.

“The government scrapped the Group 1 prelims exam conducted in December 2022 and conveniently decides to re-conduct in June. They are blissfully unaware of the mental stress a candidate goes through, the preparation time and months of hard work and dedication invested,” he said.

He said that chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao must respond and demanded an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,016. “The government should compensate give Rs 1 lakh to all unemployed candidates,” Satya added.

On Saturday, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by former minister Eatala Rajender presented a letter to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan demanding CM KCR’s resignation.

However, students feel that with the onset of Assembly elections later this year, political parties are taking advantage.

“The opposition parties approaching the Governor to take action would only open a window for the Centre to culminate it into a political issue. We believe this is a state issue and should be dealt with by the state government. This threatens the federal spirit of the nation,” said OU student Sandeep.

    Background

The TSPSC conducted the examination on March 5 for 833 vacancies for the post of Assistant Engineer, Municipal Assistant Engineer, Technical Officer, and Junior Technical Officer in various engineering departments. A total of 55,000 candidates had written the exam.

However, the Commission suspected leakage of the question paper and lodged a complaint with the police.

On March 13, police arrested nine people including two employees of the TSPSC.

Following the arrest of the accused the Commission cancelled the exam and also postponed other exams scheduled to be held later this month.

Amid doubts that the accused may have leaked question papers of some other exams, the Commission on Friday decided to cancel three other exams including Group I Prelims.

Nearly 2.86 lakh aspirants of Group I posts appeared in the Group-I exam conducted on October 16, 2022.

Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao on Saturday said that the four Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) exams cancelled due to a paper leak will be re-held without fee as the students have already paid for the cancelled exams.

Speaking to the media at BRBK Bhavan on Saturday he said that the government will ensure that all the coaching material for the four exams will be uploaded online. He said that the government will strengthen the study circles across the state and keep the study rooms open round the clock through the day.

  • No ‘middle path’, our demand for JPC is ‘non-negotiable’: Jairam Ramesh

No ‘middle path’, our demand for JPC is ‘non-negotiable’: Jairam Ramesh

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said he does not see a “middle path” to end the logjam in Parliament as the Opposition’s demand for a JPC probe into the Adani issue was “non-negotiable” and the question of an apology over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the UK does not arise.

In an interview with PTI, Ramesh said the government is rattled by 16 Opposition parties coming together to demand a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani issue and is resorting to a “3D orchestrated campaign — distort, defame and divert”.

The former Union minister also hit out at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s efforts to seek termination of Rahul Gandhi’s membership of Lok Sabha over his remarks in the UK, saying all this was “intimidation” and part of efforts to distract from the real issues.

The remarks by the Congress general secretary in-charge communications come amid the logjam in Parliament over Gandhi’s remarks during his recent trip to the UK, with both houses failing to transact any significant business on the first five days of the budget session’s second half.

Also on Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah said the current logjam in Parliament can be resolved if the Opposition comes forward for talks and that the government will go “two steps ahead” if the Opposition takes “two steps forward”.

Asked if there is any chance of finding a middle path to break the current logjam in Parliament with the BJP sticking to its demand of Rahul Gandhi’s apology and Congress seeking a JPC probe into the Adani issue, Ramesh said, “I don’t see any middle path because our demand for a JPC is non-negotiable and the question of an apology does not arise.”

“In order to divert attention from this legitimate and reasonable demand for a JPC, the BJP is insisting on an apology. An apology for what, the current prime minister (Narendra Modi) has repeatedly in China, Germany, South Korea, and various parts of the world used forums to raise domestic political issues and to criticize his political opponents. He should be making an apology why should Rahul Gandhi be making any apology for highlighting what the state of democracy is in our country today,” he said.

There is an “undeclared emergency” prevailing in the country, Ramesh alleged.

Asked about the BJP’s charge that Gandhi sought intervention from foreign countries, the Congress leader dismissed the charge, calling it “absolute bunkum and nonsense”.

He argued that whatever Gandhi said in the UK is a matter of record with its videos and transcripts available.

“He (Gandhi) is very clear, he said ‘India’s problems have to be solved internally through the electoral process, these are internal issues’. But he also said democracy in India is a public good and if India is democratic, not only India benefits but the world also benefits,” Ramesh said.

“This is a canard, an absolute lie that is being propagated by the BJP,” he said of the BJP’s foreign intervention charge.

Whatever remarks are being attributed to the former Congress chief, he never said it, Ramesh said.

“What the BJP has been doing in the past couple of days is that it is distorting Mr. Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in order to divert. This is the 3D orchestrated strategy of Mr. Modi — distort, defame, and divert. Why divert, because there is growing evidence daily of the complicity of the establishment, the PM himself, in this massive scam of Adani in which crores and crores of rupees of public institutions LIC, SBI, and other financial institutions are involved and crores of Indians are suffering because of this cronyism,” Ramesh alleged.

Asked about BJP MP Dubey’s demand that Gandhi be expelled from the House for his remarks in the UK, Ramesh said, “This is intimidation. If they want to give a motion to the Speaker, they are welcome to do so. Mr. Gandhi will reply.”

According to rule 357, Gandhi is allowed a personal explanation in Parliament, Ramesh said, citing that in 2015, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad was allowed a personal explanation in response to some remarks made against him by Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was in the Congress back then.

“Yesterday, for almost 15 minutes the microphones went off, it was collective mute,” he alleged.

On disruption rather than debate becoming the norm, Ramesh said the Opposition does not have a say as it is also not allowed to discuss issues such as Adani, China as well as economic matters.

“One of the fundamental rules of parliamentary democracy is that the Opposition must have its say and the government will have its way. We know we don’t have the numbers in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha but we are not even allowed to have our say and now efforts are being made to tarnish the Opposition’s (image), saying that the Opposition is responsible (for the adjournments),” he said.

Ramesh said that it was the treasury benches that forced the adjournments, and not the Opposition.

During his interactions in the UK, Gandhi alleged that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions. He also told British parliamentarians in London that microphones are often “turned off” in the Lok Sabha when an opposition member raises important issues.

Gandhi’s remarks triggered a political slugfest, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions, and the Congress hit back at the ruling party by citing instances of Modi raising internal politics abroad.

  • Urdu Advocates Demand Inclusion In Naib Tehsildar Recruitment

    [ad_1]

    by Insha Shirazi

SRINAGAR: The Urdu Coordination Committee (Jammu and Kashmir) held a press conference on Thursday to raise awareness about issues related to the use of Urdu language and advocate for making it mandatory for Naib Tehsildar candidates. The committee’s leaders highlighted that Urdu is not just a language but a reflection of the entire civilization, allowing people from diverse backgrounds to connect with their history and culture. They also emphasized that Urdu is the only language that can serve as a means of communication among different linguistic and geographical groups in Jammu and Kashmir. The leaders further explained that with modern technology, the importance and usefulness of language have increased significantly.

During the press conference, Ajaz Ahmad Kakroo, the president of the Urdu committee, highlighted the significance of the fact that most artists from Jammu and Kashmir express their opinions in Urdu language, using creative and aesthetic techniques. He further explained that the conference was called to address the issue of the cancellation of Urdu language in the recruitment of Naib Tehsildars, which underscores the importance of Urdu language. All members associated with the committee expressed their disappointment with the government’s recent decision to cancel the use of Urdu language in the appointment of Naib Tehsildars.

The Jammu & Kashmir administration has made a significant change in the recruitment process for Naib Tehsildar positions in the Revenue Department by eliminating the requirement for Urdu language proficiency. This decision is expected to have an impact on current procedures for land registration and documentation.

Starting in February, the Jammu and Kashmir State Council of Educational Research and Training (JKSCERT) has begun incorporating Hindi into the curriculum for classes I to X. While the committee stated that it was open to the introduction of any language, it acknowledged that the decision to make Urdu a mandatory subject had sparked concerns among the public. However, the Urdu Coordination Committee, along with numerous academic, literary, social, business, and cultural organizations, expressed their disagreement with these official decisions, which contradict the sentiments and intentions of the public. They are urging the lieutenant governor to review and reconsider these decisions.

Professors, teachers, writers, research scholars, and millions of Urdu language enthusiasts are demanding that the government include Urdu Language as a requirement for Naib Tehsildar recruitment. The committee has highlighted the unique characteristics of the Urdu language, which include its prevalence in school curriculums from class 1 to 10 in Kashmir, as well as its teaching at the university level, resulting in more employment opportunities for graduates. Furthermore, the appointment of Urdu teachers at every level could also provide job opportunities. The committee urges the government to recognize these benefits and take responsibility for introducing Urdu as a requirement for Naib Tehsildar recruitment.

Congress MPs demand summoning of SEBI chief on Adani-Hindenburg issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress MPs on Wednesday sought examining of SEBI and RBI chiefs, officials of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and other regulatory bodies by a parliamentary panel on finance to ascertain whether there were any failures on their part on the Adani issue.

Manish Tewari of the Congress raised the demand during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance but BJP members opposed it saying the issue was sub-judice.

Tewari was supported by party colleagues Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari, TMC MP Saugata Roy and BJD’s Pinaki Misra and Amar Patnaik during the meeting, sources said.

They added that BJP MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad, SS Ahluwalia and Sushil Kumar Modi strongly opposed the demand saying the issue is sub-judice as the Supreme Court is looking into the issue and has set up a committee in this regard.

The sources said Tewari stated that the chiefs of SEBI, RBI and other regulatory agencies were required to be examined to ascertain whether there was any regulatory failure on the Adani group share meltdown on Indian stock markets after the Hindenburg report came out.

Committee chairman Jayant Sinha asked the Congress members to give in writing their demand, the sources said, adding that the opposition members said this was part of the panel’s work to oversee the regulatory framework.

When contacted, Sinha said, “Some honourable members brought up a specific matter that is currently being evaluated through the SC expert committee it was agreed let the SC process be concluded.”

The issue was discussed for over an hour but remained inconclusive.

The Finance Committee met in Parliament complex to get a briefing by the representatives of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on the subject ‘Issues related to MPLAD Scheme’ and for consideration and adoption of draft reports on Demands for Grants (2023-24).
