  • Home Ministry has ‘stopped’ Delhi’s budget: Finance Minister

Home Ministry has ‘stopped’ Delhi’s budget: Finance Minister

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot on Monday alleged that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has halted Delhi’s annual budget which was scheduled to be presented in Assembly on Tuesday.

“For the first time in India’s history, the MHA has stopped the Delhi government from presenting its annual budget for 2023-24 on its scheduled date on March 21. The budget was sent for MHA’s approval as per regular practice well in advance on March 10,” he said.

He said that the MHA expressed some concerns on Delhi government’s budget and refused to give it approval through a letter sent to the Chief Secretary on March 17.

“For mysterious reasons, the Chief Secretary of Delhi kept the letter hidden for three days. I learned about the letter only at 2 p.m. today (Monday). The file with MHA’s letter was put up to me officially only at 6 p.m. today i.e. just the day before the budget was to be presented in Delhi Assembly,” the Gahlot said.

The Finance Minister also said the government has responded to the MHA’s concerns and submitted the file back to Delhi’s LG, after CM’s approval at 9 p.m. The role of the Chief Secretary and Finance Secretary of Delhi in delaying Delhi’s budget ought to be investigated, he asked.

“Nearly Rs 22,000 crores have been allocated for capital expenditure next year, whereas the allocation for advertisements is only Rs 550 crore, which is similar to that of last year. The concerns raised by the MHA are irrelevant and seemingly done only to scuttle the budget for next year of Delhi government,” he claimed.

  • Minor siblings killed in suspected dog attacks in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj

Minor siblings killed in suspected dog attacks in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In suspected cases of stray dog attack, two minor brothers were found dead in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area, police said on Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Anand (7) and Aditya (5), lived with their parents in a slum cluster in Sindhi Basti, they said.

On March 10, Anand was reported missing around 3 pm following which SHO Vasant Kunj (South) along with a police team and the boy’s family started searching for him, police said.

After a two-hour-long search in the jungle adjacent to the slum cluster, the minor’s body was found near a wall at a secluded place, a senior police officer said.

The child’s body bore multiple injury marks which seemed to have been caused by an animal bite, the officer said.

“On enquiry from the neighbours and the locals, it was revealed that there are many stray dogs inside the jungle area that often attack goats and pigs in the area,” he said.

Following this, a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Vasant Kunj South police station and the body was sent to Safdarjung Hospital for post-mortem, police said.

Two days later, on March 12, Anand’s younger brother Aditya went to the same jungle area along with his cousin Chandan (24) to attend to a nature’s call, police said.

Chandan left the minor for some time and he returned to find Aditya injured, surrounded by stray dogs, they said.

“SI Mahender of Vasant Kunj South police station who was also present in the same area for the investigation of the March 10 incident heard the noise and rushed to the spot,” the senior police officer said.

The officer took the child to a hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors, the officer said.

The post-mortem of both the children has been done and further action will be taken based on the autopsy report, police said, adding further investigation is under progress.

Recalling the incident, Sucharita, a relative of the two boys, said Aditya was attacked while the family was busy with Anand’s last rites.

“This is very unfortunate and now after this tragedy, all of us are scared and angry. Why didn’t the authorities do something to help us? We lost our young children in stray dog attacks. Had timely action been taken, they would not have met this fate…”

“We want all the dogs in the area to be removed,” she added.

Expressing his anguish over the incident, Chandan, the boys’ cousin and an eyewitness in the case, said that nobody listens to their problems despite seeking action against stray dogs.

“It can happen to anyone. At least now the authorities should wake up,” he said.

The victims’ father is mentally challenged while their mother works at a beauty parlour in Mahipalpur. Now, they are left with only one child Ansh who is nine years old.

Following the incident, police said that a letter has been sent to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seeking immediate action in the matter.

“We have sent a letter to the MCD. This is a matter of serious concern and immediate action should be taken to curb the stray dog menace in the area to further prevent any loss of life…,” the senior police officer said.

An inspection was also carried out by the MCD officials. They caught some 15-20 stray dogs in the area who will be sterilised, the officer said.

PWD demolishes temple, mosque at Delhi’s ITO

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A temple and a mosque in the national capital’s ITO area were demolished by the Public Works Department (PWD) as a part of its anti-encroachment drive.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.

Saturday’s development comes after the Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the PWD to carry out work to make a pedestrian pathway at “Jheel ka Piao” on Mathura Road, ITO, even if it called for demolishing a portion of the temple and the mosque.

The single judge bench of Justice Prathiba Singh observed that the issue was concerning the development of a pathway on an extremely busy road wherein documents and other photographs show that the temple and the mosque are abutting the pedestrian pathway.

It observed that in the line sketch filed by the PWD, there was no uniformity in the pedestrian pathway which could affect the safety of pedestrians.

The court asked PWD to confirm with the caretakers of the mandir/masjid to arrive at a consensus on the time when the said demolition will take place.

The court was hearing a plea that was moved by caretakers of Sanatan Dharam Mandir, also known as Prachin Shiv Mandir, on Mathura Road.

They had challenged a letter by the PWD which said the mandir property was identified as obstructing the way.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Police have apprehended two accused, including a juvenile, for allegedly stabbing a Class 12 student to death in Southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji area.

According to a senior police officer, at 2.30 p.m. on Monday, information was received at the Kalkaji police station that a youth, named Mohan (18), a resident of JJR camp in Okhla Phase-II, was admitted to the Poornima Sethi Multi Speciality Hospital with stab injury on his chest.

Accordingly, a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered on the basis of DD entry in view of the serious nature of the injury.

“The youth was later declared dead, following which Section 302 (murder) was added to the FIR. Mohan was a student of Class 12 at a local government boys’ school,” the officer said.

  • Man, who fled Delhi’s 5-star hotel without paying Rs 23 lakh bill sent to two-day custody

Man, who fled Delhi’s 5-star hotel without paying Rs 23 lakh bill sent to two-day custody

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Sunday remanded a man arrested for allegedly staying at a five-star hotel here for about four months by posing as a functionary of the UAE royal family and fleeing with an outstanding bill of more than Rs 23 lakh in two days’ police custody.

Duty Magistrate Shivangi Vyas sent Mahamed Sharif for custodial interrogation, noting that police had to recover certain articles from his residence in Delhi, which were allegedly stolen by him.

Sharif checked into The Leela Palace hotel on August 1 last year. He stayed in room number 427 for about four months and fled on November 20 with hotel valuables and without paying the bills, police told the court.

“Considering the fact that the recovery of the case property — the stolen articles — are yet to be effected, accused Mahamed Sharif be remanded in police custody for two days,” the judge said.

The accused impersonated a member of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates and booked the hotel room at a discounted price.

He was apprehended on January 19 from Karnataka’s Puttur and four days’ transit remand was taken from a court in the southern state.

The counsel for the accused opposed the police’s plea for remand, claiming that he was illegally arrested and no article was stolen.

According to police, besides cheating the hotel to the tune of Rs 23.46 lakh, he decamped with valuables, including silver bottle holders.

The accused registered himself at the hotel as an important functionary of the “Office of His Highness Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan” of the UAE government and gave a fake business card, the police said.

It claimed that the accused also provided a UAE resident card on arrival at the hotel.
