IPL 2023: Brilliant bowling helps Delhi Capitals defend low score against Sunrisers

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Delhi Capitals came up with a brilliant bowling effort to squeeze out a 7-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad, negating some brilliant late-order batting by Heinrich Klaasen and Washington Sundar in Match 34 of IPL 2023 here on Monday.

It was a superb bowling effort by the Delhi Capitals bowlers as Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje and Ishant Sharma applied the squeeze as they throttled the Sunrisers Hyderabad innings in a low-scoring encounter.

Washington Sundar had claimed 3-28 and three batters were run-out as Delhi Capitals were restricted to 144/9 in 20 overs. Though it looked like they had fallen 20 runs short, in the end, it proved enough thanks to the brilliant effort put up by the DC bowlers.

    MS Education Academy

After Mayank Agarwal (49) had maintained the Sunrisers’ chances with a crucial knock, Heinrich Klaasen (31 off 19 balls, 3×4, 1×6) and Sundar (24 not out off 15, 3×4) revived their chances after a middle-order wobble. Thanks to their efforts, Sunrisers Hyderabad needed 38 runs off 18 balls and after Klassen and Sundar claimed 15 runs in the 18th over bowled by Mukesh Kumar.

Nortje allowed SRH only 10 runs in the 19th over despite Sundar hitting a fine boundary. They needed 13 runs from the last six deliveries but Mukesh Kumar bowled a superb final over to win the match for Delhi. He allowed only five runs as SRH ended with 137/6 in 20 overs and fell short by a narrow margin.

This was the second successive win for Delhi Capitals as they continue their revival thanks to a brilliant effort by their bowlers. SRH succumbed to their third defeat in a row.

Mayank Agarwal had kept Sunrisers Hyderabad in the hunt as he struck a 39-ball 49 as they recovered from a poor Power-play in which they managed to score only 39/1.

Delhi Capitals bowlers came up with a disciplined effort and kept the SRH batters under pressure, dried up the boundaries and claimed crucial wickets in the middle part of the innings as the asking rate kept climbing.

Axar Patel claimed 2-21 off his four overs, Kuldeep Yadav gave away only 1-22 in his four while Ishant Sharma had 1-18 in three as Delhi Capitals applied the screws.

Agarwal kept alive their hopes after Harry Brook (7) was out early, castled by Anrich Nortje with 31 runs on the board. Agarwal struck seven boundaries as he tried to get the better of the DC bowling. He and Impact Substitute Rahul Tripathi (15) added 38 runs for the second wicket. However, after both of them were out in quick succession, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost Abhishek Sharma (5) and skipper Aiden Markram (3) were sent back by spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel respectively as SRH slumped to 85/5 in the 15th over.

Heinrich Klaasen blasted a superb 19-ball 31 and Washington Sundar contributed a 15-ball 24 not out but in the end, their efforts went in vain as the SRH succumbed to the pressure and failed to win a match they should have won easily.

    Brief scores:

Delhi Capitals 144/9 in 20 overs (Axar Patel 34, Manish Pandey 34; Washington Sundar 3-28, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2-11) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 137/6 in 20 overs (Mayank Agarwal 49, Henrich Klassen 31, Washington Sundar 24 not out; Axar Patel 2-21, Anrich Nortje 2-33) by 7 runs.

Delhi court grants transit custody of Lawrence Bishnoi to Gujarat ATS

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Monday granted transit custody of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in connection with a cross-border smuggling case.

The agency wants to question Bishnoi about any possible ties to Pakistan because it believes there is a chance that his associates are involved in cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had already zeroed in on Bishnoi for his possible links to anti-Indian elements in Pakistan.

    MS Education Academy

Bishnoi was also involved in cross-border drugs trafficking and a Nigerian woman was working for him, claimed the Gujarat ATS, which now wants to interrogate the gangster in connection with the Al-Tayyasa boat matter in which 38.994 kg heroin worth Rs 194.97 crore was recovered from the Mitha Port in Gujarat.

“Six Pakistani nationals who were on board the boat were held. Later, it was learnt that the consignment was sent for Bishnoi by Pakistan-based handlers under the supervision of a Nigerian woman. Calls were made from Punjab jail. While two of the accused have been interrogated, we want to quiz Bishnoi for which his production warrant is being sought,” a source said earlier.

Doctors at AIIMS Delhi remove whistle stuck in airways of 4-year-old through bronchoscopy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here removed a whistle which had got stuck in the airways of a 4-year-old child after he accidentally aspirated it, through endoscopy.

“Shahin, a native of Nuh distrist in Haryana, was brought to the Mother and Child Block of the hospital Sunday morning,” Dr Prabudh Goel, Additional Professor, Department of Paediatric Surgery said.

He said the child’s father had bought him a pair of slippers which had an inbuilt whistle. The whistle got dislodged and Shahin put it inside his mouth and it landed in his airways, Goel added.

    MS Education Academy

“The child was coughing when he was brought to the emergency ward. He was also in respiratory distress because the airways were compromised… the child was also making a whistling sound while breathing,” the doctor said.

The left main bronchas was okay, the left lung was being aerated and that is the reason the child survived. Additionally, there was movement of air into and out of the right lung through the whistle. The parents told us that it took them about one-and-half hours to reach the hospital.

A foreign body lodged in the main trachea blocking the main airway is an emergency of the highest order, Goel said.

“The child was directly taken to the operation theatre from emergency where we did a bronchoscopy. The bronchoscopy per say is a life and death challenge. Besides that it runs a risk of damage to the brain. There is a possibility we might need to do treacheostomy or a thoracotomy (open chest surgery) in such children,” he said.

AIIMS director Dr M Srinivas was also present during the surgery.

Dr Meenu Bajpai, Head of Department, Paediatric Surgery said such incidents of children coming to the emergency ward after swallowing peanuts, pieces of almonds, beads, safety pins, buttons and batteries are common mostly in children aged below 5-7 years. He said the hospital encounters approximately 100 such cases in a year.

“Through this case presentation, we want to spread awareness that parents should keep such items such as buttons, batteries, small toy whistles, necklace beads, peanuts, almonds and shirt buttons out of the reach of children,” he said.

  • Screening banned BBC documentary amounted to ‘gross indiscipline’, DU tells Delhi HC

Screening banned BBC documentary amounted to ‘gross indiscipline’, DU tells Delhi HC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi University (DU) told the High Court on Monday that the action of students screening the banned BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi without permission, and organising protests, despite imposition of prohibitory orders, amounts to “gross indiscipline”.

A bench of Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav was hearing a plea by the national Secretary of Congress’ student wing, NSUI, Lokesh Chugh challenging his debarment from the university on allegations that he organised a screening of the BBC documentary.

“We acted against the students who organised the screening of the documentary based on the newspaper reports which said that the two-part series has been banned in India,” the university submitted.

    MS Education Academy

“Chugh was the mastermind behind the agitation and that video footage shows that he was actively involved in the screening of the documentary in the University campus,” the DU counsel added.

The intention to disrupt the academic functioning of the University has tarnished the image of the University, it was contended.

The DU apprised the court that Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was imposed by the police on that date despite which students protested.

“The Committee after watching the videos found that the mastermind of the agitation was the petitioner. It was observed by the committee that around 20 students had gathered at 4 p.m. to showcase the BBC documentary and around 50 more students were there to watch the said documentary.”

It was noted by the court that DU’s response and Chugh’s counter are not on record and accordingly listed the case for next hearing on April 26 while asking both counsel to file their written submissions by Tuesday.

The DU has prohibited Chugh, of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and a Ph.D. research scholar at the Department of Anthropology, from taking any university, college, or departmental exams.

During the last hearing, Justice Kaurav had remarked that the university’s order did not reflect application of mind.

“There has to be an independent application of mind which is not reflected in the order… The order must reflect the reasoning,” the court said.

Appearing on behalf of the DU, lawyer Mohinder Rupal had said that the university’s decision was based on some documents that he wishes to provide, while Chugh’s counsel had claimed that there is considerable urgency in the situation because the deadline for turning in his PhD thesis is April 30.

Justice Kaurav had responded that once the petitioner is before the court, his rights would be protected.

“Mr Mohinder Rupal seeks time to file counter affidavit. Let the same be done in three working days. Petitioner is also at liberty to file the rejoinder in two days thereafter. List on Monday,” the court had ordered.

The case pertains to a protest that was planned for January 27, 2023, on the DU campus during which, the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ was also shown to the general audience.

Chugh claims in his plea that he was not even there during the protest since he was attending a media interaction.

“Pertinently, the petitioner was giving a live interview at the time when the documentary was being screened inside the Faculty of Arts (Main Campus). Thereafter, police detained a few students for screening the allegedly banned BBC documentary and subsequently charged them for disturbance of peace in the area. Notably, the petitioner was neither detained nor charged with any form of incitement or violence or disturbance of peace by the police,” he stated.

However, the DU served him with a show-cause notice on February 16 alleging that he had disrupted law and order at the university during the screening. On March 10, a memorandum debarring him was then issued.

In his plea, Chugh claims that the university’s order against him went against the principles of natural justice and that the disciplinary authorities failed to even inform him of the allegations and charges against him. Therefore, Chugh demanded that the memorandum and notice that claim he was complicit in a breach of law and order be set aside. He has asked for a stay of the memorandum in the interim.

  • Mega PTMs in MCD, Delhi govt schools on April 30, says Education Minister Atishi

Mega PTMs in MCD, Delhi govt schools on April 30, says Education Minister Atishi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Directorate of Education will organise a mega parent-teacher meeting at MCD and Delhi government schools on April 30, Minister Atishi said on Monday, noting that guardians are an important cog in providing a conducive learning environment.

This will be the first time that Delhi government schools, under the ambit of the Directorate of Education, and those run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will hold mega parent-teacher meetings (PTMs) together.

Addressing a press conference here, Education Minister Atishi urged all the parents to take part in the mega PTM and provide suggestions for their children’s education and the improvement of schools.

    MS Education Academy

“Education has always been the priority of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government. In the past few years, the government raised the budget for education, improved school infrastructure and focused exclusively on providing a conducive learning environment to children in government schools,” Atishi said.

“…we also worked to connect the parents, who are important stakeholders in the education system, with the schools. Due to this, very positive changes were seen not only in the education system but also in the children’s learning levels.

“Now we are going to start this process of change in MCD schools as well through the mega PTMs,” she added.

Atishi also appealed to the parents to join the mega PTMs in their children’s schools and said it would be held on a Sunday to enable both a student’s mother and father to participate.

“From day one itself, the Kejriwal government has believed that if we want to provide quality education to all children, we will have to make the parents participate in the process,” she said.

“Before the Kejriwal government came to power, it was thought that PTMs happen only in private schools and (are) for those parents who are educated. But ever since PTMs started in Delhi government schools, parents have been part of this education process. This has also paved the way for positive development among children and their learning abilities,” Atishi said.

Oberoi said the mega PTM would prove to be a revolutionary step.

“The increased participation of parents in schools will bring a big change in MCD schools. Through the mega PTM, our teachers will be able to share with the parents how they can create a conducive environment for their children to study at home,” Oberoi said.

“The parents can also give their suggestions on school improvement,” she added.

Oberoi also appealed to all the parents to take part in the mega PTM and help MCD schools build a bright future for their children.

  • Satya Pal Malik, Khap leaders protest at Delhi police station

Satya Pal Malik, Khap leaders protest at Delhi police station

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik, who has been called by the CBI over an alleged insurance ‘scam’, and some Khap leaders held a protest at a police station here on Saturday after not being allowed to hold a meeting at a south Delhi park as they lacked requisite permission, according to officials, who rejected reports that he was detained.

Questioning the police action, Malik said he and his supporters had gone to the R K Puram Police Station to protest as he was stopped from giving food to Khap leaders at the park. According to police, they all left the police station around 2.30 pm.

Senior Haryana-based farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said the meeting was called by Malik and a group of khap leaders, but nobody was scheduled to speak at the venue. “Where is violation of rules in this?” he asked.

    MS Education Academy

The meeting was scheduled to be held at the MCD park in R K Puram and Malik was supposed to take part, a police officer said.

He said the former Jammu and Kashmir governor was informed this was not a place to hold a meeting and also that he has not taken a permission from the authorities concerned.

After that he and his supporters left the place and arrived at the R K Puram police station, the officer added.

The Delhi Police issued a statement, saying he had gone to the police station “of his own volition”, refuting reports that Malik had been detained.

“We have not detained former governor Satya Pal Malik. He came on his own choice, along with his supporters, to the R K Puram police station and we have informed him that he can leave at his own will,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said in a statement.

Speaking to the media persons before going to the police station, Malik said he wanted to give food to the Khap leaders who were at the park.

“I don’t have much space in my house, so I decided to give them food here (at the park). They (police) have orders from somewhere not to allow the gathering and let me give them the food. I told them ‘arrest me and I am coming with you’.” When asked what the police told him, he said, “(they said) will not allow.” “Why should we go to an alternative place? We will go to the police station and offer a satyagrah there…I am going to R K Puram police station and I will protest there,” he said.

Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni told PTI, “I fail to understand why we were not allowed by police to hold the meeting as there was no scheduled speech of any farmer leaders there. Malik ji wanted to serve food to farmer leaders at the park. Where is violation of rules in this.” Asked whether the said meeting was scheduled in wake of the CBI asking Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir, Chaduni said, “It (meeting) was already scheduled to be held on Saturday.” Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police took to Twitter to say that reports about Malik’s detention was false.

“False information is being spread on social media handles regarding the detention of Sh. Satyapal Malik, Ex. Gov. Whereas, he himself has arrived at P.S. R K Puram along with his supporters. He has been informed that he is at liberty to leave at his own will,” it said in a tweet.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is the second time in seven months that Malik, who has served as the governor of various states, will be questioned by the federal agency. Malik was questioned by the CBI sleuths in October last year after he concluded his gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa and finally, Meghalaya.

The CBI move comes barely a week after Malik gave an interview to “The Wire”, in which he made critical remarks about the BJP-led Centre, especially regarding its handling of Jammu and Kashmir where he served as the last governor before the erstwhile state was bifurcated into Union territories.

  • 2020 Delhi riots: Court directs DCP to take action on incriminating, unverified video

2020 Delhi riots: Court directs DCP to take action on incriminating, unverified video

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) concerned to take immediate remedial action regarding an unverified, incriminating video against an accused in connection with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat was hearing the case fixed for orders on the point of charge against four defendants — Rahul Kumar, Suraj, Yogender Singh, and Naresh –, who have been accused of participating in a riotous mob that committed arson in a place of worship and some of its ground-floor shops on fire on February 25, 2020.

The judge noted that while Suraj and Yogender were the subjects of CCTV film, Kumar had been recognised by a public witness. Additionally, there was a video against Naresh, who is accused of committing arson and raising a flag over a house of worship.

    MS Education Academy

“However, when the video was sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), the report was received stating that the DVD was found inaccessible in the video analyst’s system and hence, no examination was carried out. The FSL report was filed by way of a supplementary chargesheet,” the judge said.

No other witness was found to identify accused Naresh, according to the judge, and it was “inexplicable” how the incriminating footage was discovered to be inaccessible after being given to the CFSL.

“If it was so, the investigating officer (IO) or the station house officer (SHO) or the assistant commissioner of police (ACP) should have again sent the correct and accessible video to the FSL for their opinion and filed the same but instead, the IO has filed the supplementary chargesheet, along with the FSL report of the inaccessible video,” the judge said.

He stated it is “difficult” for the court to frame charges against Naresh based on a “unverified DVD” because the court must do it based on the evidence that is presented.

“But yet at the same time, if the video exists and it is verified by the FSL, it can inculpate the accused and thus, discharging him at this stage without the FSL report will hurt the conscience of this court, particularly, given the nature of the case of burning of a religious place. Moreover, the origin of the video is not disclosed,” the judge said.

“In these circumstances, this court is of the opinion that the DCP concerned should take immediate remedial action,” he added.

The court then listed the matter for June 7 for next hearing.
