Delhi liquor case: After nine hours of ED questioning, Kavitha walks out

    [ad_1]

New Delhi/Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRC) MLC K Kavitha was let off by the Enforcement Directorate after nine hours of questioning in the national capital on Monday. However, the central agency summoned her again on March 21.

While getting inside her car, Kavitha waved a victory sign to her supporters who had gathered outside the ED office.

This was the BRS leader’s second round of questioning, during which she was confronted with co-accused and documentary evidence. She was also confronted with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai, whose remand ended on Monday.

Kavitha had left for New Delhi the previous day. She was accompanied by IT Minister and elder brother KT Rama Rao and MP Santosh Kumar along with advocates and senior members of the BRS legal cell.

During her first appearance, she was reportedly confronted with Arun Pillai, who represented the ‘South Group’ which allegedly gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders which was allegedly used during the Assembly polls in Goa.

Pillai has reportedly said that he was Kavitha’s associate.

Last Wednesday, the ED recorded the statement of Buchchi Babu, Kavitha’s former auditor and also a member of the South Group.

Kavitha has been maintaining that she has never met former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has been arrested by the CBI and the ED in connection with the case, claiming that her name is being unnecessarily dragged into the matter.

According to the ED, Kavitha is also one of the representatives of South Group in the excise policy case.

AAP’s attempt to deceive, hide failure: Oppn parties on Delhi govt’s Outcome budget

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi BJP and the Congress on Monday termed the Delhi government’s Outcome Budget an “attempt to deceive” the people and “hide their failure”.

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri alleged that a “white lie” has been presented in the name of Outcome Budget.

“The AAP government has not not fulfilled its promise to provide 20 lakh jobs in Delhi, yet no action plan was presented for this. They (AAP) did not fulfil their promise to rejuvenate five markets of Delhi and generate employment,” Bidhuri said.

He further alleged that the government “lied” about the pass percentage of class 10 and class 12 in its Outcome Budget.

“The Delhi government had announced to bring 15,000 buses on the roads of the capital, but 250 electric buses were brought in a year. The marshals in the buses have been removed due to non-payment of salaries.

“The Ashram flyover has been described as an achievement, while its work has not yet been completed, nor has it been fully operational,” he alleged.

“The AAP government deceived the people of Delhi through its outcome budget,” Delhi BJP said.

The Delhi Congress alleged that the AAP “wrongly presented the statistics to mislead people”.

Party’s president Anil Chaudhary alleged the AAP government’s Delhi model of education and health care was a “mere stunt”.

“The AAP government is misleading the public by presenting wrong statistics in their outcome budget. Such models do not exist at the ground level,” he alleged.

“The Outcome Budget was a ploy to hide the failures of the AAP government,” Delhi Congress said.

  • Excise policy scam: Delhi HC’s notice to ED on bizman Abhishek Boinpally’s plea

Excise policy scam: Delhi HC’s notice to ED on bizman Abhishek Boinpally’s plea

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over Hyderabad businessman Abhishek Boinpally’s plea against the trial court’s order denying him bail in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam case.

Boinpally had moved the High Court on March 14.

Appearing for Boinpally, his senior counsel apprised the bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma that his client’s son’s admission is hanging as both the parents have to appear in the school these days.

The court then issued notice to ED while keeping the issue of maintainability open and listed the matter for the next hearing on April 12.

During the last hearing, Boinpally’s plea was opposed by the ED saying that it lacks maintainability.

Boinpally’s counsel had contended that his client is in custody since October 2022.

Boinpally was a Director of Anoos Electrolysis & Obesity Pvt. Ltd, Anoos Health & Wellness Pvt. Ltd., Robin Distribution LLP, Agasti Ventures, SS Mines & Minerals, Master Sand LLP, Neoverse Realty Pvt. Ltd., Zeus Networking Pvt. Ltd and Valuecare Esthetic Pvt. Ltd.

On February 16, four others — Vijay Nair, Sarath Chandra Reddy, Sameer Mahendru and Benoy Babu — were also denied bail by the Special Judge, Rouse Avenue Courts, M.K. Nagpal, who held that the method adopted by the five of them for committing the offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) makes up for sufficient incriminating evidence.

As the ED has already made serious allegations of tampering evidence against them, the court had said that it will also be not possible to hold that the accused persons will not try to tamper with the evidence in the case if they are released on bail.

“Keeping in view the totality of facts and circumstances and the above discussion, this court is of the considered opinion that none of the applicants/accused deserves to be released on bail in this case at this stage of proceedings as the allegations made against them are quite serious and relate to commission of an economic offence of money-laundering defined by Section 3 and made punishable by Section 4 of the PMLA. Hence, their bail applications are being dismissed,” the court had said.

On March 16, a Delhi court extended another Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai’s ED custody till Monday in the same case.

Special Judge M.K. Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Courts had noted that the ED had gathered some new details after a confrontation with Butchi Babu Gorantla, Hyderabad-based chartered accountant, on March 15.

The probe agency has alleged that Pillai was involved in forming a cartel (now called South Group) of manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers which controlled more than 30 per cent of the liquor business in the national capital.

The ED named the cartel, South Group, which includes BRS leader K. Kavitha, Sarath Reddy, the promoter of Aurobindo Pharma, YSRCP MP from Ongole, Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, his son Raghav Magunta and others.

The South Group was represented by Pillai, Boinpally and Butchi Babu, the agency has claimed.

Delhi businessman, friend assaulted by bouncers at hotel; case lodged

    [ad_1]

Delhi: A 29-year-old businessman and his friend were allegedly assaulted by bouncers at a five-star hotel in the Janpath area, police said.

In a purported video of the incident, the bouncers are seen approaching a group of men and the two parties getting into a fistfight. The bouncers are also seen thrashing, punching and kicking the victims.

The police said on Sunday that the victim and his friend got into an argument with the bouncers outside a club at the hotel over entering the establishment.

The alleged incident took place on March 8 when the businessman, his wife and their friends had gone to the hotel for a Holi party, the police said.

The victim was outside with his friend while his wife was inside the club. Around 7-8 pm, he was stopped by the bouncers when he tried to enter the establishment.

He alleged that the bouncers did not allow them inside on the grounds that “stag” entry was not allowed and hurled abuses at them, the police added.

The victim claimed that they were beaten up with sticks and rods.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, a police official said, adding a case had been registered.

Delhi liquor scam : BRS MLC Kavitha leaves for Delhi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha left for New Delhi on a special flight, amid uncertainty on whether she would appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED), from Begumpet Airport here on Sunday.

Kavitha was accompanied by IT Minister and elder brother KT Rama Rao and MP Santosh Kumar. According to sources, advocates and senior members of the BRS legal cell have also headed to Delhi.

On March 16, she skipped the ED asserting that no woman shall be compelled to attend as a witness anywhere other than where she resides. She had authorized BRS general secretary Soma Bharat Kumar to appear before the ED on her behalf.

In her letter, Kavita stated that since the petition filed by her in the Supreme Court is listed on March 24, its outcome must be awaited before any further proceedings with respect to the summons issued by the ED.

However, hours after receiving the letter from Kumar, the ED issued a fresh summons to Kavitha asking her to appear before the agency on March 20.

Earlier, the daughter of CM K Chandrashekar Rao was questioned for hours by the Enforcement Directorate on March 11. Kavitha was summoned on March 16 but she skipped her appearance and sought time. She has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the summons in the case.

She expressed apprehensions that the ED might adopt highly coercive tactics and even resort to third-degree measures in connection with their purported investigations.

Kavitha has alleged a political conspiracy behind the ED summons and termed it as an “extended arm” of the Central Government. She alleged that she was summoned by the probe agency on the basis of statements made under threat and coercion.

Lakhs of farmers headed to Delhi for ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ on Monday: SKM

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Sunday said lakhs of farmers from across the country are on their way to Delhi to participate in the ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ that will be held at Ramlila Maidan on March 20.

The ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ will be held to press for a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP), the SKM, an umbrella body of farmers’ union, had said last month.

Lakhs of farmers from various states and union territories are headed to Delhi to attend the ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ in Delhi on March 20, the SKM said in a statement.

Addressing a press conference here, SKM leader Darshan Pal said, “The Centre must fulfil the assurances it gave to us in writing on December 9, 2021 and also take effective steps to mitigate the ever-increasing crisis faced by farmers.”

The SKM spearheaded an over a year-long agitation against the Centre’s now-repealed farm laws. It suspended the movement in December 2021 following a government assurance to consider the farmers’ pending demands, including the withdrawal of cases lodged against farmers during the agitation and a legal guarantee for MSP.

The SKM has also urged the centre to dissolve the committee on MSP that was constituted by the Centre, alleging that it is contrary to the demands of the farmers.

Farmers’ demands also include pension, debt waiver, compensation for those who died during the farmers’ stir and withdrawal of the Electricity Bill.

“The Electricity Amendment Bill, 2022 referred to the JPC should be withdrawn. The Centre had given a written assurance that the bill will be introduced in Parliament only after discussion with the SKM but despite this, it introduced the bill,” the SKM statement said.

It also reiterated the demand for free power for agricultural purposes and 300 units for rural households.

Rahul Gandhi replies to Delhi Police notice on his ‘sexual assault on women’ remark

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday sent a four-page preliminary reply to the Delhi Police’s notice about his “women still being sexually assaulted” remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra while questioning the process adopted by the authorities and a sudden urgency after a 45-day delay.

The Congress leader gave the 10-point reply hours after a Delhi Police team knocked on his doors for the third time in five days. He also sought eight to 10 days to give a detailed response to the questions posed by Delhi police over his January 30 remarks, the sources said.

The police team headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda arrived at Rahul Gandhi’s 12, Tughlaq Lane, residence around 10 am and was able to meet the Congress leader after two hours, officials said, adding the team left around 1 pm.

According to the police, Gandhi stated in Srinagar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that “I have heard that women are still being sexually assaulted”, and since the Yatra had passed through Delhi also, they wanted to ascertain if any victim had approached the Congress leader here so that they can initiate a probe into the matter.

“The police had asked him to give details of these victims so that security could be provided to them,” an official said.

Sending a preliminary reply a little before 4 pm, Gandhi termed the police action “unprecedented” and asked whether this had anything to do with his position taken both inside and outside Parliament on the Adani issue, sources said.

According to them, Gandhi also asked what was the urgency on the part of the Delhi Police in making two visits in as many days after an initial gap of 45 days after he made his speech in Srinagar.

The former Congress chief, the sources said, asked whether any other political party, including the ruling party, has been subjected to such kind of scrutiny or questioning over their political campaigns.

An angry Congress has condemned the Delhi Police action and attacked the Central government, calling it the “worst case of harassment and political vendetta”, but the BJP rejected the charge and said the police was “only discharging its lawful duty”.

    Rahul gandhi Delhi police

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday condemned the Delhi Police action against Rahul Gandhi and called it the worst case of “political vendetta” and “harassment”, asserting that the Centre was setting a wrong precedent by registering such cases against political opponents.

Addressing a joint press conference at the AICC headquarters here, party leaders Ashok Gehlot, Jairam Ramesh and Abhishek Singhvi said the move was a clear case of “vendetta, intimidation and harassment” in order to create an atmosphere against the former Congress chief.

Gehlot asserted that the central dispensation was setting a bad example by registering cases on statements of opposition leaders made during political campaigns, adding that the BJP leaders could face similar action over remarks made in states not ruled by it.

He said if Union ministers make similar comments in opposition-ruled states during elections, they may face the same action as done by the Delhi Police.

The Delhi Police on Sunday reached the residence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a notice issued to him over his “women are still being sexually assaulted” remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The police team headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda arrived at Gandhi’s 12, Tughlaq Lane residence, officials said.

Hitting out at the police action, Singhvi said the statements in question were made by Gandhi in Srinagar on January 30 and thus the same does not fall under the Delhi Police jurisdiction.

He also wondered why the city police force was showing so much alacrity in making frequent visits to Gandhi’s residence after 45 days of the remarks made by the former Congress chief.

He added that the move was to divert the attention from the Adani issue, but the Congress and other opposition parties will not backtrack.

  • Rahul Gandhi’s Rape Statement In Kashmir, Delhi Police Seeks Details

Rahul Gandhi’s Rape Statement In Kashmir, Delhi Police Seeks Details

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In an interesting development, Delhi Police is seeking details of the statement Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made in Srinagar during the conclusion of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, more than three fortnights ago. A police team is visiting the Gandhi scion’s Delhi residence to seek information for a mandatory follow-up.

“Rahul Gandhi gave a statement in Srinagar on January 30 that during the Yatra he met several women and they told him that they had been raped,” Special CP Law and Order Sagar Preet Hooda told reporters outside Gandhi’s Delhi residence. “We are trying to get details from him so that justice can be given to victims”.

Hooda said it was important for the police to know whether any woman from Delhi eyed her message to Rahul Gandhi. “There might be a possibility of the involvement of minors also,” he said, insisting that, in that case, the law will have to take its own course. And justice can be delivered.

Police said they sent two notices to Gandhi on March 15 and March 16, seeking a meeting to gather the details. Police said they waited for hours to get a chance to meet the opposition leader.

“In one particular case, I asked a girl, she had been raped, I asked her should we call the police, she said that don’t call the police then I will be shamed,” Gandhi had said in Srinagar, according to the Delhi Police.

Congress has reacted by saying they will respond to the notices in due course f time. “We will respond to the notice in the due course per law,” Congress tweeted. “This notice is yet another proof of a govt in panic and their latest salvo to weaken democracy, women empowerment, freedom of expression and role of the opposition.”
