Nikki Yadav murder case: Delhi court extends accused Gehlot’s judicial custody

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday extended the judicial custody of Nikki Yadav murder case main accused Sahil Gehlot and five others for 14 days.

The accused were produced in the court after the expiry of their custody and the Link Metropolitan Magistrate extended their judicial custody till April 5.

Gehlot had allegedly strangled 23-year-old Yadav near Kashmiri Gate on February 10 and married another woman on the same day. Four days later, Yadav’s body was found in a fridge at a dhaba, owned by Gehlot, in Mitraon village on the outskirts of Delhi.

The court had, on Monday, pulled up the police for not producing the case diary of the murder and had asked the Investigation Officer (IO) to come with it on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the court then directed to preserve the Call Detail Record (CDR) along with the mobile location of accused, Lokesh Yadav.

Allowing a plea seeking the preservation of CDR, Link Metropolitan Magistrate Nitesh Goyal also permitted a plea for signing and pagination of the case diary by the IO.

The court had, on Monday, extended the judicial custody of the accused persons, including Gehlot for one day and by one more day on Tuesday.

During the hearing on Tuesday, Lokesh Yadav’s counsel, advocate Anirudh Yadav submitted that the accused had been arrested in the matter but he has no role in the murder and conspiracy.

Counsel further argued that it is necessary to preserve the CDR along with the mobile location of the accused in order to avoid any manipulation and that it is also necessary to get the case diary signed and paginated by the IO for the purpose of a fair investigation.

Advocate Yadav also submitted that some of the mobile phones seized by the police have recording facilities. All the conversations are recorded and the police must have heard them. These phones ought to be sealed and sent to the FSL for examination.

On the other hand, the investigation officer (IO) claimed that Lokesh Yadav and other suspects had been arrested in the murder case and that on the day of the murder, they were near the flat in Uttam Nagar, where Nikki Yadav had resided.

He also submitted that a request for obtaining a certified copy of CDR has been sent to the concerned mobile operator.

On Monday, Metropolitan Magistrate Paras Dalal had directed the IO to produce the case diary and pagination of the same on Tuesday.

The court had noted that the IO, due to his absence, deputed a Sub Inspector to attend the court hearing, who did not bring the case diary.

After noting the submission of advocate Anirudh Yadav, the court had asked the police how the offences related to murder and conspiracy are made out against him.

On March 6, the court had extended the judicial custody of Gehlot five others by 14 days, which expired on Monday.

Earlier, for Lokesh, advocate Yadav had moved an application seeking the marking of the case diary and showed displeasure over manipulation in it.

Gehlot’s father, Virender Singh; cousins Naveen (a constable in Delhi Police) and Ashish; and friends Lokesh and Amar are accused of hatching a conspiracy to get rid of Yadav, so he could go ahead with his wedding with another woman.

According to a senior police official, Gehlot was interrogated at length during police custody and disclosed that Yadav was trying to stop him from marrying someone else as they had already solemnised their marriage in 2020.

“She was pleading with him not to go ahead with the marriage fixed by his family with another girl on February 10. However, Gehlot along with his father, two cousins, and two friends hatched the conspiracy and planned to remove the deceased from their way,” the official had said.

“He executed the plan and murdered her and informed other co-accused persons about it on the same day and then all of them went ahead with the marriage ceremony.”

Assam’s publicity blitzkrieg in Delhi to take Bihu to world stage

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP government in Assam has launched a publicity blitzkrieg in the national capital to celebrate the upcoming Rongali Bihu to make it the largest congregation of 11,000 Bihu dancers on April 14.

Assam government officials said that the state government is leaving no stone unturned to make the upcoming Bihu event in Guwahati the greatest show in terms of congregation of around 11,000 Bihu dancers and to make an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.

The mega event to be held at Sarusajai Indoor Stadium in Guwahati and it would be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The state government is inviting many Governors, Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, diplomats of G20 and ASEAN countries and many other dignitaries for the immense event.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is closely monitoring the preparations for the upcoming event and to make it a roaring success so that Bihu, the lifeline of Assamese culture, is known to the whole world, an official privy to the event said.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister said: “Preparations are in full swing for April 14, when over 11,000 Bihu dancers will create history by performing together at Sarusajai Stadium in August presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Master trainers have been trained to impart the subtle nuances of the Bihu dance form to the scores of dancers roped in from different districts across the state.

The Chief Minister himself was present when training of master trainers was underway at Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati, the venue for the biggest Bihu event.

Hoardings have come up in the waiting sheds of bus stops in prominent places of the national capital welcoming everyone to join in the biggest Bihu festival and to create history together.

Even in the yellow and blue lines of Delhi Metro, all the coaches have been wrapped up in Bihu hoardings.

Hoardings can be seen on the major roads leading to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. This upcoming event comes close on the heels of the concluding function of the year-long 400th birth anniversary celebrations of Ahom General Lachit Barphukan in the national capital in November last year.

Not only in Delhi-NCR, the state government has also launched publicity in a big way in Mumbai and Kolkata metropolises, even in metro trains.

  • BJP calls Delhi govt’s 2023-24 budget directionless’

BJP calls Delhi govt’s 2023-24 budget directionless’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi BJP on Wednesday rejected the annual budget 2023-24 of the AAP government as “directionless” and “repackaging of old promises”.

Delhi Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot presented the Rs 78,800-crore budget, giving a major push to transport and infrastructure with an allocation of Rs 21,817 crore ahead of the G20 Summit, and announced a comprehensive plan to make the national capital a “clean, beautiful and modern city”.

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva claimed that the budget had nothing new to offer.

“Various schemes like road upgradation, Yamuna cleaning, development of lakes and bus procurement were already repeated many times by the Arvind Kejriwal government in the past months and years,” he said.

The entire budget was full of repackaged promises and plans of the government that were not fulfilled in the past, he claimed.

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said the budget is a question mark on the AAP government’s credibility and that it is directionless.

Gahlot talked about zero tolerance against corruption in his budget speech which was the “worst” joke as two ministers of the Kejriwal government are in jail for their involvement in scams, he said.

The finance minister promised that in 2023-24, there will not be a single broken road or footpath, but this government makes such promises several times a year, he said.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari termed the Kejriwal government’s budget 2023-24 as a “copy-paste” of the previous budget.

“Kejriwal has no longer any vision, that is why there is nothing new in the budget and people are still suffering from its failures,” he charged.

BJP MLA Vijender Gupta said the budget was an “eyewash” and health and education sectors were in “disarray” despite significant allocations over the years.

“Out of the total budgeted estimate of Rs 78,800 crore, only Rs 21,817 crore (or 27 per cent) is allocated for capital expenditure, while the remaining Rs 56,983 crore is directed towards revenue expenditure. This points to financial mismanagement,” Gupta said.

In the name of G-20 preparations, the finance minister has made several claims. But none of the projects Gahlot spoke about could be completed within six months, when the G20 is supposed to take place, he added.

  • Impressed by Telangana’s Kanti Velugu, will replicate it in Delhi: Kejriwal

Impressed by Telangana’s Kanti Velugu, will replicate it in Delhi: Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal emphasised the need for states to learn from one another and progress together. He remarked that politics should be pushed aside in order to achieve a better government.

At a press conference in the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday, Kejriwal remembered his trip to Telangana in response to an invitation from chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to observe the execution of the ‘Kanti Velugu’ programme in the state.

“We recently travelled to Telangana, where around four crore people in the state were examined for eye disorders at no cost. Everyone who requires surgery, drugs, or spectacles receives them for free,” he stated.

This is not the first time that the Delhi chief minister expressed his thoughts on the mass eye check-up programme of the Telangana government.

The initiative impressed the Delhi chief minister, who declared intentions to replicate it in the national capital as well. He stated that the Kanti Velugu programme would benefit the poor in all states, so he decided to implement it in both Delhi and Punjab.

He stated that Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was similarly pleased by the Telangana government’s irrigation achievements and hence returned to the state to examine them.

Kejriwal was speaking to the media about the ‘Progressive Chief Ministers Group,’ or ‘G-8,’ which he suggested. He had sent letters inviting the chief ministers of West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and Punjab.

He went on to say that the platform was intended for chief ministers to travel to other states and learn from one another. “It is a governance platform, not an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. We’ll travel to different states and learn what we can from each other,” he stated.

A dinner meeting was scheduled on March 18. However, it did not take place owing to previous engagements by all of the chief ministers, Kejriwal said.

He stated that the meeting was still being arranged and that an update will be made once a definite date had been determined. He asserted that the gathering was a work-in-progress and was likely to take place after mid-April.

  • Delhi HC asks Centre to file report on recruitment of women in army

Delhi HC asks Centre to file report on recruitment of women in army

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to inform it about the induction of women in various disciplines of Indian Army.

The court’s order came on petitions by lawyer Kush Karla on alleged discrimination against women in the army’s recruitment policy in certain entries.

Let fresh status report be filed furnishing details of recruitment of women keeping in view the orders passed by the Supreme Court, said a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sachin Datta.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma said nothing remained in the petition concerning the recruitment of women in the air force in groups X and Y trades as “it has not become agniveer”.

Group ‘X’ trade refers to technical fields like aircraft and ground systems, while group ‘Y’ pertains to non-technical fields like logistics and accounts.

The other petitions pertained to recruitment of women in army’s engineering and education corp.

Let an affidavit be filed on recruitment of women in all the cases, said the court.

In the PILs, Kalra has alleged “institutionalised discrimination” against women by the Army as it does not recruit them into the two corps by giving them a permanent commission.

Opposing the petitions, Centre has said in 2018 that the allegation of discrimination against women in Indian Army with respect to their recruitment in the force is “baseless, unfounded and devoid of merit”.

The Indian Army has maintained that it has in “1992 introduced women special entry scheme (officers) for induction of short service commission (women officers)”, under the appropriate provisions of the law.

Advocate Kush Kalra has said in his plea that, “discrimination on grounds of gender is violative of fundamental right of equality before law, the right not to be discriminated on the ground of sex, the equality of opportunity in the matters of public employment, the right to practice any profession and occupation and the human rights of the women.”

The cases would be heard next in May.

  • Delhi: AAP govt allocates Rs 16,575 crore for education sector

Delhi: AAP govt allocates Rs 16,575 crore for education sector

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi government will provide new tablets to all teachers, principals and vice-principals, besides setting up new computers in 350 schools in the national capital in 2023-24.

The Delhi Budget presented by Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday allocated Rs 16,575 crore for the education department for the year 2023-24.

In the 2022-23 Delhi Budget, the education sector received the highest allocation of Rs 16,278 crore.

Providing 20 new computers to each of the 350 schools under the Delhi government and teaching of French, German, Japanese and Spanish languages in Schools of Specialised Excellence are the highlights of Delhi’s budget for the education sector.

The minister said more branches of the Ambedkar Schools of Specialised Education will come up in 2023. In 2021, there were 20 schools of specialised education, which will be increased to 37 in 2023.

Gahlot also announced that schools and industries will collaborate to develop professional skills for children at Schools of Applied Learning.

According to the Delhi government, around 56 students of the first batch of the Entrepreneurial Mindset Curriculum got direct admissions in the top seven universities of Delhi in courses such as BBA and B.Tech.

The first batch of Delhi’s Model Virtual School got students from 14 different states across the nation, the minister said.

He further said that in the past eight years, 1,410 teachers, principals and educators were sent to Finland, Singapore and Cambridge by the Delhi government, 1,247 principals received training in IIM Ahmedabad and 61 principals in IIM Lucknow.

State-of-the-art sports complexes have been developed in the last five years, including the International Sports Complex in Kair (Najafgarh), Mundhela Sports Complex and the Pehladpur Sports Complex, Gahlot said.

Projects in the pipeline include a wrestling hostel and relaying of synthetic tracks at the Chhatrasal Stadium, upgrading the Rajiv Gandhi stadium and construction of a squash centre at the Thyagraj stadium, the minister said.

He added that there are plans to develop a multipurpose sports complex at Samaspur Khalsa in Najafgarh for which 35 acres of land have already been allocated.

The government has disbursed an amount of Rs 110 crore to more than 9,000 players in the last eight years, the minister said.

Khalistani attack: Delhi Police remove extra barricades outside British High Commission

    [ad_1]

New Delhi; Delhi Police have removed barricades “that created hurdles” for commuters outside the British High Commission here but the security of the diplomatic mission remains intact, officials said on Wednesday.

The move by Delhi Police has come days after the Indian tricolour at the country’s High Commission in London was pulled down by pro-Khalistan activists.

“The security arrangements outside the British High Commission here are intact. However, barricades placed on the pathway towards the commission that created hurdles for commuters have been removed,” a senior police officer told PTI.

When contacted, a spokesperson for the British High Commission said, “We do not comment on security matters.”

India on Sunday night summoned the British deputy high commissioner and demanded an explanation over the complete “absence of security” after videos of pulling down of the Indian flag at the Indian mission in London during a protest by pro-Khalistan elements emerged on social media.

Top British officials have said the UK government will take the security of the Indian High Commission “seriously”, as they condemned as “disgraceful” and “completely unacceptable” the vandalism at the Indian mission by a group of protesters waving separatist Khalistani flags.

  • Over 120 pleas against Waqf Act pending before HCs: Centre to Delhi HC

Over 120 pleas against Waqf Act pending before HCs: Centre to Delhi HC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court was informed by the Centre on Wednesday that there are at least 120 petitions challenging the Waqf Act, 1995’s provisions pending in various high courts across the country.

Central Government Standing Counsel (CGSC) Kirtiman Singh moved an application seeking more time to file a response to the petitions against the Waqf Act.

The government counsel was asked by a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sachin Datta to initiate action and seek instructions for the consolidation and transfer of all cases to the Supreme Court.

One of the petitions is by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay.

The government claimed in its application that it must adopt a careful and uniform stance because there are numerous cases pending nationwide that challenge one or more Waqf Act provisions.

“Keeping in view the multiple petitions challenging various sections of the Waqf Act, 1995, it is essential for the Respondents/Applicants (Central government) to ensure that a clear and consistent view is taken. This involves thorough examination of petitions, consultation/vetting by the government counsels and discussions with other stakeholders, such as state governments,” the government submitted.

The court listed the case for the next hearing on July 26.

In his plea, Upadhyay contended that while the Waqf Act was created for the management of waqf properties, there are no comparable rules for followers of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Bahaism.

Hence, it is “against the secularism, unity and integrity of the nation,” the plea contended.

It stated that the Waqf Board has Muslim MLA, MP, IAS Officer, town planner, advocate and scholars, as its members who are paid from the public exchequer despite the fact the Centre doesn’t collect any money from mosques or dargahs.

“On the other hand, states collect around Rs one lakh crore from four lakh temples but there are no similar provisions for Hindus. Thus, the Act offends Article 27,” Upadhyay contended.

The plea further claimed that the Waqf properties were given priority over other charitable religious organisations and that the Waqf Act had granted the Waqf boards unbridled power.
