Biden pushing airlines to go beyond refunds for delayed or canceled flights

The White House said the expanded website will show that only one airline guarantees frequent flyer miles, and that two airlines guarantee travel credits or vouchers as compensation if passengers experience significant delays or cancelations that are caused by something within the airline’s control such as a mechanical issue. Zero airlines guarantee cash compensation for preventable delays and cancellations.

Biden and Buttigieg will officially announce the new effort at an appearance at the White House on Monday. The White House noted that three airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines and American Airlines, announced commitments to provide fee-free family seating after Biden included family seating fees as part of his attack on “junk fees” in this year’s State of the Union.

“When an airline causes a flight cancellation or delay, passengers should not foot the bill,” Buttigieg said in a statement. “This rule would, for the first time in U.S. history, propose to require airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels, and rebooking in cases where the airline has caused a cancellation or significant delay.”

Background: The announcement is another push by the White House to get ahead of a summer travel season that is predicted to exceed pre-pandemic travel levels in 2019.

Late last year, Southwest Airlines’ holiday meltdown stranded tens of thousands of passengers and prompted calls from Buttigieg and lawmakers to make travelers whole. Southwest responded by doling out rewards points and spending millions on hotels and other expenses for passengers who were stranded for days, though Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) is pushing the airline to make public how many customers applied for reimbursements for ancillary expenses but were rejected.

Federal law does not require airlines to compensate passengers for flight delays. If a flight is canceled, a passenger can choose to receive a refund.

‘It’s not fair’: Simona Halep unhappy over delayed doping hearing

    [ad_1]

Simona Halep has criticised tennis’s anti-doping bodies for repeatedly delaying her independent tribunal hearing and not allowing her the chance to defend herself against a rule violation.

Halep, a two-time grand slam champion and former world No 1, has been provisionally suspended since August after testing positive for the drug Roxadustat following her US Open first-round loss. Roxadustat is primarily an anti-anaemia medicine that catalyses red blood cell creation in the body. Halep denies knowingly taking the banned substance.

According to Halep, her hearing was initially scheduled for 28 February, which gave her hope that she would know whether or not she could compete at Indian Wells. Anti-doping tests have been administered by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) since 2022 but Halep appeared to indicate that her case is under the remit of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Speaking publicly for the first time since announcing she had received the anti-doping rule violation, Halep said that the February hearing was eventually postponed to 24 March as the ITF required more time for additional testing, but the subsequent date was also postponed. Halep’s tribunal hearing is now scheduled for 28 May, the first day of the French Open.

“The next step is a hearing at the end of May, the 28th, but it is very fragile because the ITF said that they might cancel it as well,” she said. “If they do that, it will be almost eight months since I’ve been provisionally suspended for the first time and I believe that it’s not fair to spend eight months without even being judged by the tribunal.

“Emotionally, the whole period has not been easy and I just felt the need to speak out loud to my fans, to my supporters, and actually to the whole public,” continued Halep in an interview with Tennis Majors, which lists Patrick Mouratoglou, Halep’s coach, as a member of its staff.

Halep says that she sought the advice of “experts” who provided her with evidence that she unknowingly took contaminated supplements due to a mistake from the company that sells the supplements. Halep says she presented her evidence to the ITF in December, but the organisation chose to proceed with an anti-doping tribunal. Halep declined to name the experts as she has retained them for her tribunal.

“I had never heard about it so I didn’t know how I could take it, and actually how it could be in my urine. After a lot of work they found out that there was a contamination, a supplement contamination, and that’s why the quantity was so, so low in my body,” said Halep.

Halep says she has continued to train and she remains motivated to return to professional tennis and re-establish herself at the top, but at 31 years old every passing day on the sideline makes a comeback more difficult. Halep says she is primarily concerned with finally having the opportunity to defend her case.

“It’s been seven months since I’ve been originally suspended even though I’ve had all the evidence since December,” she said. “I’m not asking for special treatment. I just ask to be judged. How much longer is this going to take?”

Tennis Majors reported that the ITF said it was not in a position to comment on Halep’s criticism. The ITIA has been contacted for comment.

  • J-K polls delayed as BJP aren’t ready to face voters: Omar

J-K polls delayed as BJP aren’t ready to face voters: Omar

    [ad_1]

Jammu: National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Monday attacked the BJP, alleging that the “delay” in assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir is because they are not brave enough to face voters as they have failed to mitigate people’s problems.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, without naming the ruling party at the Centre, said they have also not been able to keep their promise of bringing large-scale investments and create job opportunities in the Union Territory.

“They are not ready to face the people and are escaping from (assembly) elections on one pretext or the other. They used the pretext of delimitation of constituencies and revision of electoral rolls which stands completed long back. They talked about weather not being conducive but have no justification to further delay the polls,” he said in a veiled attack on the BJP.

The National Conference (NC) vice president was addressing a public meeting at Bajalta in Nagrota constituency – his first in the city after the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and its bifurcation into two union territories in 2019.

Wearing a white turban, Abdullah said the weather is getting pleasant, they have only two reasons for delaying the polls further, one could be the worsening security situation which they claim has improved and the second being that they are afraid to face the voters.

“If they had been brave, they would have gone for the elections. After today’s public rally, some people (among the BJP) who were supportive of early elections will also feel jittery,” he said in an apparent reference to former legislator Devender Singh Rana who resigned from the post of NC provincial president and joined the BJP in October 2021.

Abdullah said the public meeting has proved beyond any doubt that the NC is alive both in the Kashmir and the Jammu province.

“People come and go but those who have love for the organisation and are not linked to any particular individual will stay back because they are with the party’s principles, flag and agenda,” he said.

The NC will show its real strength during the assembly elections, Abdullah asserted.

“They will try to polarise the situation as they are doing elsewhere in the country. We have to frustrate their attempts by standing united,” he said.

The former chief minister said for the first time he is witnessing a government which “feels happiness in inflicting difficulties on the people. It will be better to get rid of this government as soon as possible”.

“They are only engaged in propaganda, drama and showoff Sometime back, we heard of an outside company making an investment in Srinagar but it proved much ado about nothing,” the NC leader said referring to the Emaar group of United Arab Emirates laying the foundation of a mega mall project worth Rs 500 crore on Sunday.

He said his party was accused of being an obstacle in the path of development and job creation, and asked what happened over the past three years. “There is no new project, and recruitment for government jobs was cancelled owing to scams,” Abdullah said.

Those who celebrated the abrogation of Article 370 in Ladakh and Jammu are equally sad, he claimed.
“We were angry from day one but there were some people who celebrated it with a hope of ‘New J&K’. The people in Jammu suffered economically because of the stopping of the darbar move and anti-encroachment drive, while Leh people are openly expressing that they were happy to be part of J&K,” the NC leader said.

The erstwhile state was divided into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh with Lt Governor-led administrations.

Abdullah also took a dig at the administration over an alleged imposter, Kiran Patel, who was arrested in Srinagar early this month and said “the deserving are not getting their rights but the frauds are getting benefited”.

“Instead of finding the reality of Patel before treating him as a VIP, they bowed before him. My colleagues who faced (terror) attacks were not given an escort, he (Patel) was given adequate security, five star accommodation and taken to LoC with many officers lined up to seek recommendations for transfer and promotions,” he said.

He said nobody can deny the differences between Kashmir and Jammu as far as weather and culture is concerned but what “we witness today is that both the regions are having common sufferings, people are annoyed and gripped by despondency”.

Referring to anti-encroachment drives in the Union Territory, Abdullah said he was surprised to see the pictures when they took out a bulldozer rally in Kashmir to frighten the public. “When people protested and the situation became tense, the bulldozer drive was stopped at the behest of Delhi,” he claimed.

He also talked about the imposition of property tax and said “they are saying only a handful of income will be generated but if that is the case, then what is the need for imposing the tax to harass the public”.

  • ‘AIIMS Bibinagar project delayed indefinitely’, alleges Uttam Kumar Reddy

‘AIIMS Bibinagar project delayed indefinitely’, alleges Uttam Kumar Reddy

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Lok Sabha Congress MP, N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday said that the construction of All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) Bibinagar has been delayed indefinitely by the Central Government with a lack of transparency.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare answered MP Uttam Kumar’s question in Lok Sabha regarding the long-pending AIIMS Bibinagar project and said that the tender has been awarded but did not provide any timeline for the completion of the project.

“A long-standing public demand of Telangana State has been delayed indefinitely by the Central Government and moreover with a shameful lack of transparency, no reliable information has been provided. Instead, the Government has revised information provided by themselves repeatedly, and have not furnished a single reason for the continuous delays,” said the Nalgonda MP.

The Telangana MP had raised a similar question on September 18, 2020, in the Lok Sabha and the Union health ministry informed the House that the timeline for completion of AIIMS Bibinagar is September 2022.

In February 2022, the Ministry informed that the date of completion has been pushed to November 2023 and subsequently in July 2022 when MP Uttam Kumar asked for a timeline of completion, the Ministry stated that the project will be completed by January 2025.

On Friday, in reply to the MP’s question, the Union health ministry only replied that the tender for the construction of AIIMS Bibinagar has been awarded in July 2022 but did not specify any timeline of completion.

Section 93 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act required the Central Government to complete certain guarantees within 1O years, and AIIMS Bibinagar was one of them. The Government revealed in the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2022, that out of Rs 1028 crore sanctioned for AIIMS Bibinagar only Rs 29.28 crore has been released so far.

The MP alleged that the Union government has displayed startling inconsistency in providing information about the status of AIIMS Bibinagar. The medical institution is a part of developmental guarantees and has been delayed for a very long time.

Special flight to repatriate Musharraf’s mortal remains from Dubai gets delayed: Reports

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: The special flight from Dubai to repatriate the mortal remains of Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was delayed, media reports said on Monday.

Musharraf, the architect of the Kargil War in 1999, died on Sunday in Dubai after a prolonged illness.

The 79-year-old former military ruler, who had been in the UAE since 2016, was undergoing treatment for amyloidosis at American Hospital Dubai.

Musharraf’s mortal remains were supposed to have been flown to Pakistan on a special flight at 11:30 am local time, according to Geo TV.

But the special flight has not arrived in Dubai so far.

“We were told the aircraft will leave Dubai on Monday morning with Pervez Musharraf’s body. We don’t even know the reason behind the delay,” Urdu news channel Aaj News reported.

The former Pakistan Army chief will be laid to rest at the Karachi Old Army graveyard and his funeral prayers will be offered at Gul Muhar Polo Ground in Malir Cantt on Tuesday after Zuhr prayers, according to The Express Tribune.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Pakistan’s missions in the United Arab Emirates are facilitating the transportation of Musharraf’s mortal remains, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The former military leader’s wife Sehba Musharraf, son Bilal and daughter Ayla will bring Musharraf’s mortal remains to Pakistan, according to Geo TV.

It said that Musharraf’s mother was buried in Dubai while his father was laid to rest in Karachi.

Musharraf seized power by ousting Sharif in a 1999 bloodless coup.

He served as Pakistan’s president from 2001 to 2008.

Musharraf, who was born in New Delhi in 1943 and fled to Pakistan in 1947, was the last military dictator to rule Pakistan.

Srinagar, Jan 30: Jammu and Kashmir parts are receiving snowfall since morning, leading to closure of Jammu Srinagar national highway besides delay in flights to and fro the Srinagar ‘international’ airport and suspension of Baramulla—Banihal Train train service on Monday.

Jammu Srinagar national highway is blocked for vehicular movement due to mudslides/shooting stones at many places between Chanderkot and Banihal, officials said.

A Railway official told Srinagar based news agency Kashmir Dot Com that the train service will remain suspended until the snow on the railway line is removed. The railway will resume its operations as soon as the snow is cleared, he said adding that “after the snow is cleared, WDS 4 will go first, apologize for the inconvenience.”

Director Srinagar International Airport told KDC that it is continuously snowing at the airport following which all flights of all airlines are delayed due to low visibility.

“Our visibility is only 200 M and there is continuous snowfall, we are simultaneously clearing the snow,” he said.

He said all flights are delayed. To avoid inconvenience and to avoid congestion please check the status of your flight from your airlines before coming to the airport, he added.
