Limit to even transparency in ‘New India’: Cong on PM’s degree case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday took a swipe at the government, saying there is a limit to even transparency in ‘New India’, after the Gujarat High Court set aside an order of the Central Information Commission asking the Gujarat University to provide information on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree.

The high court set aside the seven-year-old order of the commission, asking the varsity to provide information on prime minister’s degree to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Allowing the Gujarat University’s appeal against the Central Information Commission (CIC) order, Justice Biren Vaishnav also imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on Kejriwal and asked him to deposit the amount within four weeks to the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority (GSLSA).

Reacting to the verdict, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a tweet in Hindi said, “There is a limit to even transparency in New India. This is what the ‘Entire Political Science’ teaches.”

Asked about the issue at a press conference, Congress’ media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said, “See, why this matter went to the court. Courts have lot of pressure… PM’s educational qualification, whether his degree is genuine or not, this matter going to a court is astonishing.”

“It’s a matter of paradox in India, in a country where four crore cases are pending in courts, a hearing is happening on the prime minister’s degree. So, why this situation came up, we need to understand. ‘Entire Political Science’, I haven’t heard of it, if you have heard about it, please tell me,” Khera told reporters in response to a query.

“Even if today such a degree is offered then, I would like to take it,” he said.

PMO need not furnish degree certificates of PM Modi: Gujarat HC

    [ad_1]

The Gujarat High Court ruled on Friday that the degree and post-graduate degree certificate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are not required to be provided by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Judge Biren Vaishnav’s one-judge panel overturned the Chief Information Commission’s (CIC) directive to the PMO, Gujarat University, and Delhi University PIOs to provide information about Modi’s undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was also charged 25,000 rupees in expenses by the Gujarat high court for his request for the PM’s degree certificate’s specifics. The Gujarat University appealed the Chief Information Commission’s decision, and the high court was now hearing it.

“In a democracy, there won’t be a difference if a person holding the office is a doctorate or an illiterate. Also, there is no public interest involved in this issue. Even his privacy is affected”, legal website Bar and Bench quoted Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was appearing for the university.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he earned his undergraduate degree from Gujarat University in 1978 and his postgraduate degree from Delhi University in 1983.

Kejriwal’s lawyer Percy Kavina argued that, “If you see the nomination form (filed during elections), it mentions his educational qualifications. Thus, we are asking for a degree certificate and not his marksheet”.

Mahatma Gandhi Had No Degree: LG Sinha

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha on Thursday while speaking about Mahatma Gandhi stated that the iconic leader did not possess any degree in law or any other field.

During an event at ITM University in Gwalior to commemorate Martyr’s Day on March 23, Sinha asserted that Mahatma Gandhi, who worked as a barrister during the apartheid era in South Africa, did not possess a law degree, but only a high school diploma. However, Sinha acknowledged that Gandhi had met the requirements to practice law, despite not having a law degree from any university.

The LG of Jammu and Kashmir stated that despite Mahatma Gandhi’s triumph over great obstacles throughout his life, there is a “misunderstanding” among some educated individuals that he held a law degree, which is incorrect. He also mentioned that although some individuals may disagree with his statements, he was simply presenting factual information.
