Anointment of Prince Charles as monarch deeply religious

    [ad_1]

While enlightened intellectuals of India scoff at traditions and rituals it is of interest to note the Coronation ceremony of Britain’s new King Charles III, is full of traditions and religion.

A significant moment in the coronation will be the “anointment” ceremony of a king – a purely religious part of the coronation ceremony of the monarch.

A developed country like the UK which ruled over India for nearly 200 years will even today acknowledge a person as king only after he/she is anointed following strict religious rules.

    MS Education Academy

There is no legal requirement for a coronation as many monarchies have done away with this ceremony but it has a religious significance in Britain as the monarch is formally confirmed in his role as head of state and titular head of the Church of England.

The monarch’s anointment will be carried out while he sits on the Coronation Chair, made for King Edward I in 1300. The chair will be having the Stone of Scone, also known as “the Stone of Destiny”. This Stone is an ancient object associated with the kings of Scotland. A 150kg red sandstone slab has some marks on it, along with two attached metal rings. It is supposed to be a  sacred, historic symbol of its monarchy and nationhood.

The monarch will then be anointed using the Coronation Spoon with holy oil contained in the Ampulla.

He will be anointed with “holy oil” which will make him the head, or supreme governor, of the Church of England.

A highly solemn and sacred moment between him and God , there is no recording to be made of it on television. Even when Queen Elizabeth was crowned, this moment of anointment was not filmed.

It would be one of the most “sacred” moments of his life.

The coronation oil which will be used for the anointment of King Charles III and Queen Camilla has been consecrated in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

It will be applied symbolically to the forehead, ears, nostrils and breast as the organs of sense.

The oil that will be used to anoint them is using a formula which has been followed for years and was used to anoint Queen Elizabeth II.

The official oil was made with olives harvested from local groves including on the Mount of Olives.

The olives were pressed near Bethlehem, and the oil was perfumed with scents of sesame, rose, jasmine, cinnamon, neroli, benzoin, amber and orange blossom.

They will be anointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury who is supposed to have thanked His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III and Archbishop Hosam Naoum for having blessed and consecrated the oil.

Interestingly the Bible states that Jesus ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives. Today, the site is considered sacred by many faiths.

The choir traditionally sings Handel’s ‘Zadok the Priest’ during this most sacred moment of the coronation, the anointment.

The oldest item in the Coronation Regalia is the 12th-century Coronation Spoon. It is the only piece of royal goldsmiths’ work to survive from that century. During the coronation ceremony, the spoon is used to anoint the monarch with holy oil.

The gold Ampulla or flask holds the holy oil. The head of the eagle is removable with an opening in the beak for pouring the oil into the spoon.

The Sovereign’s Orb is a representation of the monarch’s power. It symbolises the Christian world with its cross set on a globe.

The gold Orb weighs 1.32kg and is mounted with emeralds, rubies and sapphires surrounded by diamonds and pearls.

The monarch is given the  Sovereign’s Orb, a gold globe topped by a cross, as well as a ring and two sceptres.

During the coronation service, the Orb is placed in the right hand of the monarch. It is then placed on the high altar before the moment of crowning.

The Sovereign’s Sceptre was made for the Coronation of Charles II in 1661 and has been used at every coronation since.

The Sceptre includes the magnificent Cullinan I diamond, the largest colourless cut diamond in the world.

In 1911 the Crown Jeweller, Garrard, mounted the diamond in the Sovereign’s Sceptre. The diamond is so large that the Sceptre had to be reinforced to take its weight.

The Imperial State crown is set with 2,868 diamonds, as well as several famous jewels.

It includes St Edward’s Sapphire, said to have been worn in a ring by Edward the Confessor.

The crown also includes the Cullinan II diamond, the second largest stone cut from the great Cullinan Diamond. The Cullinan Diamond is the largest diamond ever discovered.

The anointing is followed by dressing of the monarch in the spectacular robe of cloth of gold called the Supertunica and the longer Imperial Mantle. The monarch is then presented with other items from the Coronation Regalia.

These includes the gold spurs, the jewelled Sword of Offering and the Armills. The Armills are gold bracelets representing sincerity and wisdom.

The ceremony will conclude with the placing of the magnificent St Edward’s Crown on the monarch’s head. The crown features four crosses with a cross and orb at the top to represent Christianity. The cap portion is made of purple velvet and the base is made of ermine fur.

The senior officials of the United Kingdom pay homage to the newly crowned monarch. They place their hands on the monarch’s knees, swear an allegiance, touch the crown and kiss the monarch’s right hand.

When going back in the golden stagecoach the King will wear a different crown, the Imperial State Crown.

The magnificent Cullinan Diamond, the largest diamond ever found, weighing 3,106 carats, has two of its pieces, Cullinan I and Cullinan II, set in the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross and the Imperial State Crown.

As guests surround the coronation platform (where Charles is anointed as King) in Westminister Abbey from all sides and shout, “God Save King Charles…”. They publicly acknowledge the fact that Charles has now become the King.

Interestingly the act is called “Recognition” or the open acceptance of his becoming the next King.

Charles will take the Coronation Oath –  to abide by and uphold the laws of the land — as part of his becoming the King.

Like in many other parts of the world including India too it was believed historically in Britain that the King is divinely appointed by God or is God’s human representative on Earth.

Roughly 80 MPs and peers, members of the House of Lords, have received invitations to attend the function besides other heads of states and dignitaries.

The two hour long ceremony would have about 2,000 odd invitees compared to 8,000 guests at Queen Elizabeth II coronation.

The coronation day starts with a procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach. This coach has been used at every coronation since William IV’s in 1831.

After the service at the Abbey there is traditionally a procession through the streets of London. This allows as many people as possible to see the newly crowned monarch.

The Queen consort will also be crowned  (with Queen Mary’s crown) along with the king in a similar but simpler ceremony. She is anointed and crowned and receives a smaller version of the Sceptre with the Cross.

Ludhiana gas leak: Deeply saddened by loss of lives, says President Droupadi Murmu

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday said she was deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the Ludhiana gas leak incident and expressed her condolences to the bereaved families.

Eleven people, including three children, died allegedly after inhaling toxic gas in Ludhiana’s thickly populated Giaspura area on Sunday, with authorities suspecting that dumping of some chemicals in the sewer led to the noxious emission.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of many people, including children and women, in the accident in Ludhiana. I express my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to all those affected,” Murmu said in a tweet in Hindi.

Deeply concerning to see our athletes protest on streets: Abhinav Bindra

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Hours after star wrestler Vinesh Phogat appealed to sportspersons to join their protest to oust under-fire chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra took to social media to announce his solidarity with the athletes.

Vinesh along with Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik have been sitting on an indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar against WFI supremo Singh, who has allegedly harassed seven female wrestlers including a minor.

Bindra, who has always voiced his opinion in favour of distressed sportspersons, took to twitter to term the incident “deeply concerning”.

    MS Education Academy

“As athletes, we train hard every day to represent our country on the international stage. It is deeply concerning to see our athletes finding it necessary to protest on the streets regarding the allegations of harassment in the Indian wrestling administration,” Bindra tweeted.

Bindra said that all the concerns raised by top wrestlers should be addressed by the administration.

“My heart goes out to all those who have been affected. We must ensure that this issue is handled properly, with the athletes’ concerns heard and addressed fairly and independently.

“This incident highlights the crucial need for a proper safeguarding mechanism that can prevent harassment and ensure justice for those affected. We must work towards creating a safe and secure environment for all athletes to thrive in,” he added.

  • ‘Deeply frustrated’: Florida legislators worn out by DeSantis

‘Deeply frustrated’: Florida legislators worn out by DeSantis

    [ad_1]

One GOP legislator privately said: “We’re not the party of cancel culture. We can’t keep doing this tit for tat.” The lawmaker was granted anonymity to speak freely about the GOP governor.

“People are deeply frustrated,” said former state Sen. Jeff Brandes, a St. Petersburg Republican who has been talking to his former GOP colleagues frequently this session. “They are not spending any time on the right problems … Most legislators believe that the balance of power has shifted too far and the Legislature needs to re-establish itself as a coequal branch of government.”

The vexation in Tallahassee comes as DeSantis has struggled to gain traction nationally after weathering weeks of criticism from former President Donald Trump and other Republicans ahead of his likely 2024 announcement. DeSantis’ momentum after winning reelection in November by historic margins is beginning to evaporate. Even Florida’s GOP Legislative leaders, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and House Speaker Paul Renner, on Wednesday declined to endorse DeSantis. While both praised the governor, they said they would wait until after the legislative session before saying who they would back for the 2024 election.

DeSantis administration officials declined to comment for this story.

DeSantis had already positioned himself as one of the most powerful governors in state history during his first term, strong-arming the Legislature to approve his congressional redistricting maps and reshaping GOP power in the state through boosting Republican voter registration numbers and endorsing school board candidates. Ahead of the session, the governor rolled out a lengthy agenda designed to give him a long line of legislative victories that he could tout if he runs for president as expected.

But after seven weeks, the toll is wearing people down. POLITICO interviewed more nearly 20 people involved in the legislative process, including Republican and Democratic legislators as well as lobbyists and legislative staffers.

Many Republicans said they support many of DeSantis’ priorities but have seen their own priority bills get waylaid or slowed down to help him. They have chafed at orders coming from legislative leaders who are working in concert with the governor’s office. Some have suggested that the GOP supermajority has made it easier for legislative leaders to ignore complaints from rank-and-file members.

“I think our Republican colleagues are done,” said state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a South Florida Democrat. “I think they are fed up. There’s obviously still some true believers and there’s some very loyal and allegiant individuals and groups … They would like him to hurry up and announce and start focusing exclusively on other stuff other than here.”

By all accounts though, DeSantis has racked up some big wins this session. Lawmakers have already passed multiple bills that the governor backed, including a ban on abortions after six weeks, a measure letting people carry concealed weapons without a permit and legislation that will no longer require a unanimous jury recommendation in death penalty cases.

On Wednesday, the Legislature sent to the governor’s desk a bill that would bar the use of certain types of investment strategies that DeSantis and other Republicans have called “woke.” Lawmakers also agreed to put on the 2024 ballot a proposed constitutional amendment that would make school board elections partisan. And a bill that would block children from attending adult-themed drag shows is also heading to the governor.

Yet some of DeSantis’ top priorities remain up in the air with less than three weeks to go, including tough new anti-immigration measures that DeSantis called for ahead of the session. One part of that package — eliminating in-state tuition rates for undocumented college students who went to a Florida high school — has yet to be introduced.

Another bill that lawmakers appear unlikely to approve would alter defamation laws and was designed to potentially set up a challenge to New York Times v. Sullivan, the landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that limits public officials’ ability to sue publishers. The House and Senate versions of the bill, which drew criticism from both traditional media outlets and conservative media, have languished for weeks in committee stops and legislators have not advanced them.

Renner insisted, though, that legislators this session were living up to what they told voters last fall.

“We’re doing the very things we campaigned on, we’re governing as we campaigned,” Renner said.

He acknowledged that there was a “chokepoint” earlier in the session because the House was spending most of its time on legislation being pushed by the governor and legislative leaders.

“If people are frustrated it’s probably because we had a ton of bills that the governor’s put forward that we in House and Senate leadership have put forward but,” Renner said. “There’s going to be a ton of other bills that are coming forward.”

Deeply hurtful: Omar Abdullah on BJP leader K S Eshwarappa’s comments about Azaan

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah Monday termed Karnataka BJP leader K S Eshwarappa’s comment about Azaan — the Muslim call for prayer — “deeply hurtful”.

Senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa on Monday said loudspeakers used for ‘Azaan’ disturb people, especially students preparing for examinations and patients in hospitals. He was responding to a query on his comments on Azaan made during the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Yatra on Sunday at Shantinagar, which has gone viral on social media.

Reacting to Eshwarappa’s comments, Abdullah tweeted, “Setting aside the deeply hurtful comments from the BJP for a moment, who will explain to this ignoramus that an Azaan is not a prayer meant for Allah but is, in fact, a call to prayer meant for people. While Allah hears and sees all, humans alas often don’t.”

  • Top VC firms deeply concerned at SVB collapse, Ashneer offers a solution

Top VC firms deeply concerned at SVB collapse, Ashneer offers a solution

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Top venture capitalist (VC) firms on Saturday issued a joint statement on the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), one of the largest US banks serving the global startup community, saying they are “deeply disappointing and concerning”.

Hemant Taneja, investor and managing partner at General Catalyst, said in a tweet that several VC leaders like Accel, Khosla Ventures, Altimeter Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund, Ribbit Capital, Redpoint Ventures and others met to discuss the aftermath of SVB’s downfall.

“Silicon Valley Bank has been a trusted and long-time partner to the venture capital industry and our founders. For 40 years, it has been an important platform that played a pivotal role in serving the startup community and supporting the innovation economy in the US,” they said in a joint statement.

The VC leaders said that in the event that SVB were to be purchased and appropriately capitalised, “we would be strongly supportive and encourage our portfolio companies to resume their banking relationship with them”.

Ashneer Grover, former founder of BharatPe, took a dig at Taneja and other VC firms: “Bhai khareed lo fir investors mil ke. Uske liye bhi Founder dhoond rahe ho jo mehnat kare? Lagta hai PMC (Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank) ki tarah mujhe hi koodna padega bachane!”

Grover had claimed that the acquisition of the crisis-ridden Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC) by Centrum-BharatPe consortium was the “smartest corporate move in history”.

He further tweeted that “ebanks don’t get saved by passing these bureaucratic UN type joint resolutions by people with no intent to get their hands dirty. It requires intent and balls of steel”.

On Friday, the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) took control of the SVB’s $175 billion in customer deposits.

The bank’s collapse has left several startups, including in India, worried who have exposure to its investments and have active accounts in the bank.

Meanwhile, the top VC leaders told startup founders that now is the time to diversify not panic.

“SVB is a huge loss for our community. If everyone had moved 3-6 months cash out of SVB vs taking all out, SVB might still be standing. Now this is the move — don’t repeat yesterday. Not helpful to keep speculating and create more panic,” Taneja posted.

  • U.S. ‘deeply troubled’ by Israel’s legalizing 9 outposts

U.S. ‘deeply troubled’ by Israel’s legalizing 9 outposts

    [ad_1]

    biden 23227

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel agreed to legalize nine settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, The Associated Press reported. This action goes against the United States’ strong opposition to “any unilateral steps that exacerbate tensions,” Price said during the State Department briefing.

The Israeli leadership under Netanyahu has faced criticism from some who say the far-right policies are racist or misogynistic. During Netanyahu’s attempt to return to power last year, after being ousted in the previous election, he tapped into far-right extremist coalitions to gain support — coalitions now represented in the new Israeli government.

The U.S. has tread lightly in addressing the new coalition government, while also keeping its ties with a historic ally. Blinken previously met with Netanyahu two weeks ago during a two-day trip.

However, the U.S. State Department’s vocal opposition should be “no surprise,” Price said.

“During his recent trip to Israel, Secretary Blinken was clear: that all parties should refrain from actions that heighten tensions and take us further away from peace,” Price said. “Israel’s decision on settlements and outposts runs directly contrary to those objectives.”

Price said the State Department was now having “intensive discussions with the parties, including Israel.” These discussions are bilateral and multilateral, he said.

“When we were there, before we were there, after we were there, last week, again today, our message on this has been clear and consistent,” Price said. “We oppose any unilateral steps that exacerbate tensions.”
