New Delhi: The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) Tribunal on Tuesday upheld the Centre’s decision to ban Popular Front of India (PFI) and its affiliates.
According to the sources, the Tribunal has dismissed the allegations levelled by the organisation that one particular community is being targeted by the government.
The judgement was passed by UPA tribunal headed by Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma.
Lawyers associated with the case said that the Tribunal noted that the members of PFI and its affiliates are indulging in secessionist activities which were against the social fabric of the country.
To justify the ban on the terror outfit, the Central government had examined and presented 100 witnesses and had also shown two videos on the activities of the organisation and its members, the lawyers said.
The tribunal judgement was later sent to the Home Ministry.
The Union Home Ministry had in September last year declared Popular Front of India (PFI) and its affiliates an ‘Unlawful Association’
It had said that PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts have been found to be involved in serious offences, including terrorism and its financing, targeted gruesome killings, disregarding the constitutional set-up of the country, disturbing public order etc. which are prejudicial to the integrity, security and sovereignty of the country.
The Home Ministry said it found it necessary to curb the nefarious activities of the organization. It declared the Popular Front of India (PFI) along with its associates or affiliates or fronts including Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala as “unlawful association” under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Bengaluru: Strongly condemning the Maharashtra government’s decision to implement its health insurance scheme in the 865 border villages in Karnataka that it is laying claim to, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday called it an “unpardonable offence”, and said he would raise the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In December last year, Union Home Minister stepped in to defuse border tensions between Maharashtra and Karnataka. He called a meeting between the two Chief Ministers, after which he said both of them had agreed not to make any claims and counter-claims on the border issue till the Supreme Court had decided on the matter.
Speaking to reporters, Bommai today said Maharashtra had “violated” that agreement, and urged his counterpart Eknath Shinde to “behave responsibly”.
The latest tension between the two states cropped up after the Shinde government recently announced that it would allocate an additional Rs 54 crore for its ‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana’, so that the benefits could be extended to the border villages in Karnataka that Maharashtra has been laying claim to.
The Karnataka Chief Minister today urged the Maharashtra government to immediately withdraw its order on implementing the health insurance scheme in the villages on Karnataka’s side of the border, and said he would be raising the matter with Union Home Minister Shah.
Warning against dredging up border issues, indicating that it could backfire against Maharashtra, Bommai said, “We too can announce such schemes or programmes.”
“Several Gram Panchayats and Taluks (on Maharashtra’s side of the border) have made resolutions seeking to join Karnataka, as they are not getting justice in Maharashtra,” he added. “With such a situation, the Mahrashtra government should behave responsibly. I strongly condemn their Cabinet decision.”
Opposition leaders D K Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah on Wednesday had also condemned the Maharashtra government’s move, and took the opportunity to call for Bommai’s resignation for “having miserably failed to protect the interests of Karnataka and Kannadigas.”

The White House has been mulling the Willow decision for weeks. The deliberations have focused on the legal constraints posed by the fact that Conoco has held some leases for decades and “has certain valid, existing rights granted by prior Administrations, limiting the Biden Administration’s options,” the official continued.
Stopping new oil leases, plus other measures meant to conserve the Arctic from new drilling, is meant as a “fire wall” to protect 16 million acres of land and water in the state, said the official.
The Sierra Club environmental group gave tempered support to any new rules.
“These unparalleled protections for Alaskan landscapes and waters are the right decision at the right time, and we thank the Biden Administration for taking this significant step,” Sierra Club Lands Protection Program Director Athan Manuel said in a prepared statement. “However, the benefits of these protections can be undone just as quickly by approval of oil and gas projects on public lands, and right now, no proposal poses a bigger threat to lands, wildlife, communities, and our climate than ConocoPhillips’ Willow project.”

Tunis: Tunisia welcomed the decision by Saudi Arabia and Iran to resume diplomatic ties, the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Tunisia wished to see the step contribute to strengthening regional security and stability, uprooting tension, and establishing a new phase of cooperation between regional countries, the Ministry added on Saturday in a statement.
The Ministry also praised the role played by China in facilitating the Saudi-Iran agreement, Xinhua news agency reported.
Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions within two months after China-mediated talks in Beijing. They have also agreed to hold talks between foreign ministers to arrange ambassadors’ exchange and explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations.

Srinagar: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday welcomed Iran and Saudi Arabia’s decision to re-establish diplomatic relations after years of tensions and expressed hope that it will act as a harbinger of greater cooperation in the Islamic world.
Iran and Saudi Arabia on Friday agreed to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies after seven years of tensions. The major diplomatic breakthrough was negotiated with China.
Tensions have been high between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The kingdom broke off ties with Iran in 2016 after protesters invaded Saudi diplomatic posts there.
“Restoration of ties and reopening of diplomatic missions between the two countries is a welcome step that will have wide-ranging implications across the Muslim world,” Abdullah said in a statement here.
The former Union minister expressed hope the move will act as a harbinger of greater cooperation in the Islamic world in particular and the world community in general.
“This dialling down of tensions and de-escalation will not just benefit the Gulf region, but the world at large,” Abdullah said.

Srinagar, Mar 01: Days after the government announced levying of property tax in Jammu & Kashmir, the administration on Wednesday said that the Municipal Corporations and Committees have started passing the resolution to adopt the decision and that the transparency system in the Union territory has no comparison with rest of the country.
In an exclusive chat with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, V K Bidhuri, said that the Municipal Corporations and committees require resources to run the affairs, but presently these corporations and committees are generating only 10-15 per cent of the revenue and are dependant for rest of the resources. To ensure better facilities, every municipality requires resources and property tax is the best decision to generate revenue for the wellbeing of the people,” he said.
He added that J&K is the last in the country where the property tax has been imposed, but the government decided to go with a minimum tax. “The rural areas are already out while in Urban areas, Agricultural land and other falling under master plan are also exempted,” he said while appealing people not to pay heed over the sayings, but they should calculate on their own.
“Tax is not being imposed on any individual but it is being levied on a property and people having property on less than 1000 sq ft are already exempted,” he said while replying to a query.
He further said that out of total 5.20 lakh residential houses, 40% among them have been exempted as the properties have come up on less than 1000 sq ft. “The tax amount is different in different areas and districts and is being decided as per the circle rate,” he said.
He also said that after the decision was taken in this regard; the municipalities have started passing the resolution to adopt the decision.
He added that the tax amount will be used only for the developmental purpose in the respective municipalities. He added that the tax will have to remain the same for three years and will be reviewed after three years as per the circle rate.
The property tax will ensure resources for the development and better facilities to the people and will also bring a sense of ownership among them, he told KNO.
He added that there is a transparency system in J&K and there is no comparison with J&K’s transparency system with any part of the country. “The transparency system in J&K cannot be found anywhere in the country where even the photos of developmental works are being uploaded,” he said.
Asked about a complete shift to online mode, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, said that the process has already been done and every work is being done through online mode now.
About the smart city project works, he said that the deadline has been squeezed to April and the works are going on at a rapid pace during day as well as night. “The people will face inconvenience, but the works will be completed on April 15 while carpeting and other related things will be done by April 30th,” he said.
Asked about the encroachment drive, he said that retrieving encroached land is their regular activity and the government is responsible for it. “We are duty bound to carry out our encroachment drive for the people. We are re-strategizing it at present, but the poor will not be touched,” he said.
Asked about the completion of installation of smart meters across Kashmir, he said that the process will be completed in net two years—(KNO)
