Trump’s next in-person hearing in hush money case set for Dec 4

New York: The next in-person hearing in a criminal case against former president Donald Trump in New York City has been set for December 4, roughly two months before the official start of the 2024 Republican presidential primary calendar.
Trump, the first former US President to be criminally charged, has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records at his arraignment in a Manhattan court on charges relating to hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election.
At the December in-person court appearance, State Supreme Court Justice Juan M Merchan will decide on the expected motions to dismiss the case.

Following Trump’s arraignment, prosecutors said they expect to produce the bulk of the discovery in the next 65 days, CNN reported.
Trump’s team has until August 8 to file any motions and the prosecution will respond by September 19. Judge Merchan said he will rule on the motions at the next in-person hearing on December 4.
Trump’s attorney Jim Trusty said Tuesday he expects “robust” motions to challenge the case and hopes they can succeed in stopping the case.
If not, Trusty said he expects Trump’s attorneys will “figure out if there’s a way to try to push this earlier” than the December 4 hearing.
Trump, 76, has already announced that he will seek the Republican Party’s nomination in the 2024 presidential election.

The Iowa Republican caucuses will be held on February 5, 2024, marking the start of the party’s primary season.
That underscores how Trump’s legal troubles could shadow him into the period when voters are picking a candidate to nominate for president, The Hill newspaper reported.
The New Hampshire primary, the first one on the Republican calendar, is scheduled for February 13.
Trump is expected to use the charges against him to try and rally support among Republican voters, arguing he is a victim of a politically motivated prosecution. A Saint Anselm College poll released Tuesday showed Trump with 42 per cent support among likely Republican primary voters, well ahead of Florida Gov Ron DeSantis, who garnered 29 per cent support, the newspaper said.

Over 25,000 vacancies filled in various govt departments in J&K till Dec 2022: Centre
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that 25,450 vacancies have been filled in various government departments in Jammu and Kashmir till December 2022.
The Government of J&K, has carried out several governance reforms, including in the area of recruitments in Government.
“Large scale recruitment drive has been carried out after formation of the Union Territory in the most transparent manner,” he said.
He further said that 33,426 vacancies of Gazetted and Non-Gazetted categories have been identified in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 25,450 vacancies have been filled till December, 2022, while recruiting agencies have advertised 7,976 vacancies for recruitment.
He also said that the identification of vacancies in the Government and recruitment is a continuous and on-going process and the same is taken up under Accelerated Recruitment Drive.
“The Government of J&K has taken various initiatives to bring down un-employment by implementing various self employment schemes through different departments by providing subsidized loans for establishment of their own sustainable income generation units.”
He said a number of self-employment schemes like Mission Youth, Rural Livelihood Mission, Himayat, PMEGP, Avsar, Tejaswani are being implemented for providing employment opportunities.
“From the results of the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), estimates of unemployment rate is not available specifically for the educated youth in Jammu and Kashmir for the period April-June 2021,” he said.

He said however, from the PLFS conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) during July 2020-June 2021, estimate of unemployment rate according to usual status among the persons of age group 15-29 years for Jammu and Kashmir was 18.3 per cent—(KNO)

Meta purged over 34 mn bad pieces of content on FB, Instagram in India in Dec

New Delhi: Meta has said that it took down over 22.54 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 12.03 million pieces of content across 12 policies for Instagram in December 2022 in India.
Between December 1-31, Facebook received 764 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism, and the company said it provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 345 cases.
These include pre-established channels to report content for specific violations, self-remediation flows where they can download their data, avenues to address account hacked issues etc, said Meta in its monthly report in compliance with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
“Of the other 419 reports where specialised review was needed, we reviewed content as per our policies, and we took action on 205 reports in total. The remaining 214 reports were reviewed but may not have been actioned,” Meta added.
On Instagram, the company received 10,820 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism.
“Of these, we provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 2,461 cases,” it informed.
Of the other 8,359 reports where specialised review was needed, Meta reviewed content and took action on 2,926 reports in total.
The remaining 5,433 reports on Instagram were reviewed but may not have been auctioned.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.
“We measure the number of pieces of content (such as posts, photos, videos or comments) we take action on for going against our standards. Taking action could include removing a piece of content from Facebook or Instagram or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning,” said Meta.

RBI extends deadline for locker agreements renewal till Dec 31

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday extended the deadline for renewal of locker agreements between customers and banks till December 31, 2023.
The extension was given by the central bank as it was noticed that till January 1, 2023, which was the original deadline for renewal of agreements, a large number of customers had not signed the revised agreement.
Now the banks have been directed by the RBI to complete the process in a phased manner by December 31, 2023.
However, banks have been asked to meet the intermediate milestones of 50 per cent by June 30, 2023, and 75 per cent by September 30, 2023.
In addition to this, banks have been advised to make necessary arrangements to facilitate execution of the revised agreements by ensuring the availability of stamp papers, etc, a statement by RBI said.
“Further, in cases where operations in lockers have been frozen for non-execution of agreement by January 1, 2023, the same shall be unfrozen with immediate effect,” the circular said.
