O’Connell, 69, had been a priest for 45 years and was a native of Ireland, according to Angelus News, the archdiocese’s news outlet. Pope Francis had named him one of several auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — the largest in the country — in 2015.

O’Connell worked in South Los Angeles for years and focused on gang intervention, Angelus News reported. He later sought to broker peace between residents and law enforcement following the violent 1992 uprising after a jury acquitted four white LA police officers in the beating of Rodney King, a Black man. Nearly two decades later, he brought the San Gabriel Valley community together to rebuild a mission there after an arson attack.

O’Connell was found in Hacienda Heights around 1 p.m. Saturday with a gunshot wound. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the area — just blocks from the St. John Vianney Catholic Church, which is part of O’Connell’s archdiocese — on a report of a medical emergency.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. The archdiocese said O’Connell lived in Hacienda Heights, but it was not immediately clear whether he was found at his home or elsewhere.

About a dozen people prayed the rosary next to police tape late Saturday after news of O’Connell’s death broke.

“He didn’t hold back his words. He was well spoken,” Jonny Flores told the Los Angeles Times from outside the crime scene. “He would take the time. He was very humble. He was never too busy.”

The sheriff’s department on Saturday initially only said homicide detectives had responded to “a shooting death investigation” with a male adult victim. Authorities did not identify the victim as O’Connell until Sunday morning.

The LA County sheriff offered the agency’s condolences, saying detectives are “committed to arresting those responsible for this horrible crime.”

“He was a peacemaker and had a passion serving those in need while improving our community,” Sheriff Robert Luna said on Twitter.

Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez initially only said O’Connell, who served in the city for decades, “passed away unexpectedly” without mentioning the violence. The archdiocese on Sunday referred media inquiries to the sheriff’s department.

“It is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness,” Gomez said in his original statement Saturday, calling him “a good friend.”

  • Telangana govt should constitute SIT to probe Medak death: Shabbir Ali

Telangana govt should constitute SIT to probe Medak death: Shabbir Ali

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Sunday demanded that the Telangana government set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the death of Mohammed Abdul Qadeer Khan, who succumbed to death due to the grievous injuries caused by Medak Police personnel.

Further, he said all the police personnel involved in the act must be booked for murder and arrested immediately. He also demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakh to be paid to the victim’s family.

Shabbir Ali strongly condemned the Telangana Police for trying to cover up the custodial death.

“Why is the state home minister Mahmood Ali silent on this issue? Why is he not at the very least acknowledging the custodial death of Qadeer Khan? Is this the KCR government’s example of ‘friendly policing’?” he asked.

The Congress leader said that the death of Qadeer Khan due to police torture has raised many questions about the functioning of Telangana Police.

“Qadeer Khan was first picked up from the Old City of Hyderabad as a suspect in a theft case; brutally tortured for five days in a police station in Medak and then placed under illegal house arrest. He was denied medical help although he suffered multiple fractures, dislocation of the spine and renal failure. He had to escape house arrest to get himself admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad. Media has been reporting about the incident since Qadeer Khan was admitted to a hospital and the victim himself recorded a video narrating how he was tortured by the police. But neither the home minister, DGP or other police officials reacted and now after his death, they are busy trying to cover up everything,” he said.

Shabbir Ali alleged that Telangana was becoming the capital of ‘custodial deaths and torture.

He said a Dalit woman Mariyamma and her son Uday Kiran were brutally tortured by the police in Yadadadri Bhuvanagiri district and later Mariyamma succumbed to the injuries in July 2021.

Two more cases were later reported from Suryapet and Kamareddy districts.

“Instead of ensuring the safety of common people, home minister Mahmood Ali leaves no occasion to praise the Telangana police and its ‘friendly policing’,” he said adding that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) never reacted on the rising incidents of custodial deaths in different parts of Telangana.

He also condemned MIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi for defending the KCR government on all issues including the custodial death of Qadeer Khan. He pointed out that Qadeer Khan was picked by the police from Yakutpura, which is part of the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

“The AIMIM leader went to Bharatpur in Rajasthan to meet the families of two youths Junaid and Nasir who were murdered in Haryana by the right-wing goons. While we strongly condemn the murder of Junaid and Nasir and demand stern action against the culprits, we expect Asaduddin Owaisi to express a similar reaction to Qadeer Khan’s custodial death who belonged to his home state. Why Asaduddin Owaisi did not visit the Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad where Qadeer Khan was admitted for 23 days? Is he not trying to protect KCR government as he did in the past in similar cases?” he asked.

Medak custodial death: Are Bahujans lower than dogs? Telangana BSP asks KCR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief RS Praveen Kumar on Sunday questioned state chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on the alleged custodial death of Mohammad Khadeer Khan and asked if Bahujans hold lesser value than dogs under his rule.

“KCR garu, you have filed a case against the doctors that your puppy-husky died, but your police are still chasing a poor Bahujan man Khadeer Khan to the point of kidney damage in Medak. Are our poor lives in Telangana worse than your dogs?? #Justice4KhadirKhan,” Praveen Kumar tweeted.

Praveen Kumar was referring to a case in September 2019, where Hyderabad police had charged a veterinary doctor with negligence in the death of Husky, a pet dog at Pragati Bhavan, the official residence of the chief minister. The Hulk breed, a cross between a pit bull terrier and a bulldog, belonged to the 11-month-old dog. Husky allegedly died on September 11 after the veterinarian gave him an injection.

The police registered a case and launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from Asif Ali Khan, who looks after the pet dogs at Pragati Bhavan. The complainant claimed that the dog died as a result of the doctor and the doctor in charge of the private veterinary clinic where the dog was rushed after his condition deteriorated following the injection.

The custodial death case of Muslim man in Medak

In his last video, Mohammad Khadeer, as a ‘dying declaration’, alleged that the Medak police thrashed him for 5 days and they tried to cover it up.

Mohammad Khadeer died at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad after the Medak police allegedly tortured him causing major injuries that led to his death.

Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar on Saturday directed the Inspector General of Police to supervise the probe of the alleged custodial torture-related death of the 35-year-old labourer who was picked up by Medak police, suspecting his role in a theft case.

In a statement while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Medak, he alleged that he was kept in custody for five days and beaten up by policemen though he kept telling them that he was innocent.

“The cops said the person involved looks like me,” he said.

The police let him off on February 2 when he was unable to move his hands. They (police) asked him to tell others that he was kept in custody for one night. They also asked him to sign a paper and as he was unable to even hold the pen, one of the policemen signed the paper.

Khadeer named the two constables and the Sub-Inspector (SI). He said while the SI only slapped him twice or thrice, the two constables beat him up all over the body.

Due to the alleged torture, Khadeer could not stand on his feet, and his kidneys were also damaged. His wife Siddeshwari, alleged that police used third-degree methods on him. On February 9, he was admitted to a hospital in Medak.

As Khadeer’s condition kept deteriorating, he was referred to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on February 17 and is survived by his wife and two children.

The body was handed over to the family members early Saturday morning after autopsy and it was later taken to Medak for last rites.

Qadeer’s death triggered public outrage. Local Muslim community leaders urged Bharat Rastra Samiti (BRS) MLA M. Padma Devender Reddy to take action against the policemen involved.

Subsequently, the MLA spoke with the Medak Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohini Priyadarshini, demanding an investigation into the incident.

The SP transferred SI Rajshekar and the two constables, Pavan and Prashanth.

AIMIM MLA from Hyderabad, Kausar Mohiuddin visited Medak and attended the funeral on Saturday morning. He slammed the police for the restrictions imposed on the funeral and questioned if Qadeer was a “naxalite or terrorist”.

The MLA demanded that the three policemen involved in the case should be booked for murder. He said the FIR should be changed to include the names of the SI and the two constables.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee President A Revanth Reddy on Sunday demanded the government provide exgratia of fifty lakh rupees to the kin of the deceased.

Student death: IIT Bombay forms panel for parallel’ investigation

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has formed a panel to conduct a “parallel” probe into the death of a first-year B.Tech student amid allegations of caste bias and has urged its students to come forward if they have “relevant” information.

The panel is headed by Professor Nand Kishore and also has SC/ST Students Cell members, including faculty and students, a few student mentor coordinators and the in-charge chief medical officer of IIT Bombay hospital, said a statement by institute Director Subhasis Chaudhuri on Saturday.

Darshan Solanki (18), who belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the IIT on February 12, but his family suspects foul play in his death and said he faced discrimination.

The Powai police are investigating the matter and have also visited Solanki’s home in Ahmedabad.

Highlighting that Prof. Nand Kishore was the chief vigilance officer of IIT Bombay till recently and is experienced “in these matters”, Chaudhari said that the committee is actively meeting everyone who might have relevant information.

“If you have any information that you believe may be relevant, please reach out to the committee by either meeting any of the committee members, or by emailing Prof. Nand Kishore or to the Powai Police,” Chaudhari appealed through the statement.

IIT Bombay and police are actively investigating the “environment, incidents, and reasons behind Darshan’s tragic death”, it said. The police have interviewed a large number of people, and also taken Solanki’s phone and laptop for forensic analysis, Chaudhari said.

In the statement, Chaudhari said IIT B is working towards changes in their UG curriculum, starting with the batch of 2022, to make it “more relevant and motivating to students, and to reduce some of the stress”.

Calling some media reports about the student’s death “premature”, Chaudhari said that “as the matter is sub-judice so we cannot comment on the causes until either police report or our inquiry committee report is ready”.

According to Chaudhari, IIT Bombay has an SC/ST students cell, where students can reach in case of issues including discrimination.

“We are working actively to create an inclusive campus where all students feel at home,” Chaudhari said.

He said they give strong warnings against any discrimination during new students’ formal orientation and also sensitise all students to not seek proxy information such as ranks in entrance exams. “We have a very strict policy on discrimination by faculty,” Chaudhari said.

Solanki’s family on Wednesday had claimed that he faced discrimination at the IIT B for belonging to an SC community and maintained that there was a strong possibility that he was “murdered”.

According to a police official, his parents had visited Mumbai to collect their son’s body. In their initial statements, they had not raised any objection to the probe or expressed doubt over the cause of their son’s death, said the official had said earlier.

Gujarat Congress MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has demanded a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into Solanki’s death.

Ex-cops plead not guilty over African-American man’s death

    [ad_1]

Washington: Five former police officers in Memphis, who have been charged with murder over the death of African-American man Tyre Nichols, have pleaded not guilty in their first court appearance.

The 29-year-old died in a hospital on January 10, three days after a traffic stop by Memphis police.

On January 27, the Memphis Police Department released four graphic videos, totalling more than an hour of footage, showing the five former police officers, who are also black, brutally beating the victim.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr, Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith were fired after an internal investigation by the police department, the BBC reported.

During the hearing at the Shelby County Criminal Court on Friday, Judge James Jones confirmed the five defendants had pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

The former officers are currently out on bail, with the next hearing scheduled on May 1.

They face up to 60 years in prison if convicted of murder.

The Memphis Police Department’s so-called SCORPION unit, to which the fired officers belonged, has been permanently deactivated.

The fallout has also reached other agencies, including the Memphis Fire Department, which fired three emergency medical technicians.

Two additional Memphis police officers have also been relieved of duty.

The death of Nichols came nearly three years after the police murder of African-American man George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Floyd, 46, died on May 25, 2020, after an encounter with Minneapolis police, during which white officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes while making an arrest with other colleagues.

The police killing of Floyd sparked outrage and protests across the US in the summer of 2020 against police brutality and systemic racism.

Police killed 1,186 people in the US last year, according to Mapping Police Violence.

African-Americans were 26 per cent of those killed by police in 2022 despite accounting for only 13 per cent of the population.
