Pakistan’s transgender news anchor Marvia Malik escapes death

    [ad_1]

Pakistan’s first transgender news anchor, Marvia Malik, cheated death when she was attacked by gunmen outside her residence in Lahore on the night of February 23.

According to Dawn, Malik was returning from a pharmacy when two men opened fire. In a statement to the police, Malik claimed she had been receiving frequent threatening calls and messages from unknown numbers. She also claimed that her activism was a “major factor” behind the assassination attempt.

Malik is currently residing outside Lahore to ensure her safety.

Last year, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) had appealed to the Pakistani government to review the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018 as it is not in line with the Shariah,” as “several of its provisions are inconsistent with Islamic principles”.

    Who is Marvia Malik

In 2018, Marvia Malik made history by becoming the country’s first transgender news anchor on air. She was born in Lahore in 1997 with two other siblings. She was often bullied and taunted by her classmates as a child and a college student.

“Like other trans people, I did not get any support from my family. On my own, I did some menial jobs and continued my studies. I had always wanted to be a news anchor, and my dream came true when I got selected,” she had said to American broadcaster Voice of America in a telephonic interview.

She worked as a makeup artist to fund her higher studies, before pursuing a career in mass media. She graduated from Lahore’s Punjab University.

In another interview with the news agency Associated Press, she mentioned how even after getting a degree a job was beyond her reach. “Our degrees are of no use…even if we seek jobs, we get rejected due to our identity, I want to change this mindset,” she said.

Iranian-German citizen Jamshid Sharmahd sentenced to death

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iranian-German citizen Jamshid Sharmahd has been sentenced to death by a court in Tehran after being accused of organizing a bomb attack in 2008.

The 67-year-old also has US residency and was arrested in August 2020, convicted of “corruption on earth” for leading a pro-monarchy group accused of a deadly 2008 bombing and of planning other attacks across the country, the judiciary’s Mizan Online news agency reported on Tuesday.

As per media reports, Jamshid main charge is masterminding the 2008 bombing of a mosque in the southern city of Shiraz, which killed 14 people and injured hundreds. He was also found guilty of communicating with US and Israeli officials and agents.

Germany on Tuesday condemned the announcement.

“The death sentence for Jamshid Sharmahd is absolutely unacceptable,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock tweeted promising a “strong reaction” to the court’s decision.

“Not only is the death penalty cruel, inhuman and degrading, but Jamshid Sharmahd has never had anything close to a fair trial,” Baerbock said.

In January 2023, Iran sentenced a Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes for spying for the United States, money laundering and currency smuggling.

Also in January, Iran executed former Defense Minister Alireza Akbari, a British-Iranian convicted in Tehran of spying for MI6, Britain’s foreign intelligence agency, and accused of involvement in the assassination of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday initiated a suo motu public interest litigation over the gruesome incident of a pack of stray dogs attacking and killing a 4-year-old boy at Amberpet in the city on February 19.

The High Court took cognisance of a newspaper report on the incident and took it up as the suo motu public interest litigation (PIL).

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan will hear the PIL on Thursday.

The court has made Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department Principal Secretary, GHMC Commissioner, GHMC Deputy Commissioner (Amberpet), GHMC Veterinary Officer, Hyderabad District Collector and Member Secretary of Telangana State Legal Services Authority as respondents in the PIL.

The child was apparently carrying a packet containing some food item when the dogs pounced on him and killed him. The incident was caught on CCTV camera and the footage went viral on Tuesday provoking public outcry.

In the video clip, the canines were seen suddenly attacking the boy while tailing him, following which he fell down. He was walking alone. The unrelenting pack of strays kept mauling him even as there was nobody in sight who could come to his rescue.

The victim suffered serious injuries in the attack and was rushed to the hospital by his father and others where he was declared brought dead, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials had said.

“I want to acknowledge what a horrible day this has been for our community and our media partners,” Mina told a room full of reporters. “I work closely with all of you and know many of you and know the the very difficult job that you do and also the very important job that you do for our community and for law enforcement. No one in our community — not a mother, not a 9-year-old and certainly not news professionals — should become the victim of gun violence in our community.”

Mina said they don’t immediately have a motive for any of the shootings.

Deputies had initially responded to the Pine Hills area, just northwest of Orlando, on Wednesday morning following reports of a woman in her 20s being shot.

According to witnesses, a man approached the news vehicle later Wednesday and opened fire and then walked to a nearby home and shot the mother and daughter.

Mina said Moses is already facing a murder charge for the initial victim, and charges are expected soon for the other four victims. Moses’ criminal history includes gun charges, as well as aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft offenses, the sheriff said.

Spectrum News 13 is not yet identifying the crew members who were involved in the shooting, according to a story on the TV station’s website.
