    [ad_1]

Ankara: The latest statement of AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) said that 45,089 people lost their lives while 1,15,000 people were injured in the Turkey earthquake, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.

A devastating earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Southern Turkiye in the early hours of 6 February (4.17 a.m.), with its epicentre in the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province. The earthquake affected the neighbouring provinces of Adiyaman, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Elazig and Adana where about 14 million people reside including about 1,8 million Syrian refugees.

A second major earthquake hit the region after 9 hours with 7.5 magnitudes causing further severe damage and destruction of damaged buildings.

Aftershocks continue after the Kahramanmaras earthquakes. On 20 February, a 6.4 earthquake in Hatay, the epicentre of which was in Defne district, and a 5.6 magnitude earthquake centred in Malatya on 27 February also caused the collapse of many damaged buildings and added to the death toll.

STL published its previous Situation Report on February 28. Below are listed a number of region-wide developments for the period of February 28 to March 3.

According to the ‘2023 Earthquakes Displacement’ report prepared by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a total of 2.7 million people left the disaster area.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has warned of the urgent need for a sustainable short- and long-term response to health, mental health and psychosocial needs in Turkey and Syria to prevent a “second disaster”.

The Minister of National Education of Turkiye announced that 202,817 students affected by the disaster were transferred to other cities.

UNICEF announced that 2.5 million children are in need of urgent humanitarian aid in the disaster zone.

The President of Turkiye announced that 2,14,000 buildings were destroyed and heavily damaged, to be demolished immediately.

UN OCHA mapped the sectors and locations of NGOs operational in the earthquake zone. The organizations that operate in the ten sectors can be accessed via the map.

The Turkish Government reported that a total of 911,942 people affected by the disaster were provided with psychosocial support at 4 mobile social service centres in the provinces of Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye and Malatya.

It has been officially announced that the payment of 10,000 Turkish lire per household to the disaster-affected people was made to one million families.

STL continues its emergency response in the disaster area, namely in Hatay, Adiyaman, Kahramanmaras, Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa in the sectors of shelter/NFI, WASH, MHPSS and protection.

  • Macabre death of Hyderabad child moves authorities to act on strays

Macabre death of Hyderabad child moves authorities to act on strays

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The horrific visuals of a pack of stray dogs mauling a four-year-old boy to death in Hyderabad will continue to haunt the citizens for a long time to come.

The helpless child being surrounded by strays, pouncing on him and biting him all over the body leading to his death, has highlighted how serious the menace is in the city.

The shocking incident evoked public outrage, triggered a debate on how to check the dog menace and the usual man versus dog argument.

The municipal authorities came out with a new set of guidelines to control the stray population, not just in Hyderabad, but in other urban areas of the state as well.

A series of incidents of dog bites have been reported from different parts of the state over the last one week, putting spotlight on the problem.

The death of Pradeep on February 19 was the second such incident in Hyderabad in less than a year.

In April 2022, stray dogs had mauled to death a two-year-old boy in the Bada Bazar area of Golconda. Anas Ahmed, who was playing outside his house, was attacked by a pack of dogs which dragged him to an adjoining military area. The toddler had sustained grievous injuries and died before he could be taken to the hospital.

Disturbing CCTV visuals of the hapless child being attacked and dragged by dogs into the bushes had surfaced on social media.

The incident had triggered public outrage in the area. The dog catching teams were pressed into service in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but the problem was forgotten within a few days of the incident.

It took the death of another innocent for the municipal authorities to wake up. This time, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) announced some measures to check the menace after criticism from various quarters.

Taking cognisance of the media reports on the latest incident, the Telangana High Court initiated a suo moto PIL.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan blamed the negligence by the GHMC for the boy’s death and asked it what steps are being taken to curtail incidents of stray dog attacks.

The court asked GHMC to explain what steps it would take to ensure that such an incident is not repeated.

Telangana had recorded 80,281 cases of dog bites in 2022, a huge leap from 24,000 in 2021. However, the municipal officials say the comparison would be incorrect as 2021 was a pandemic year when there was lesser animal-human conflict.

According to officials, 1.6 lakh dog bite cases were registered in 2019 and compared to pre-Covid years, the cases have come down by 50 per cent. Telangana stands eighth in the country in terms of dog bite cases.

After the latest incident, the GHMC officials revealed that the Telangana capital has 5.50 lakh stray dogs. According to the officials, this figure was 8.50 lakh in 2011 but their population reduced with the successful Animal Birth Control-cum-Anti Rabies (ABC-AR) programme.

Officials said that 65 per cent of stray dogs have been sterilised under the ABC programme. Following the gruesome killing of the four-year-old, the municipal officials have ordered 100 per cent sterilisation.

The child’s killing also sparked demands from citizens to relocate stray dogs from their areas. However, the GHMC officials are caught in a dilemma as they can’t relocate stray dogs even after the ABC-AR procedure.

The guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India and the Supreme Court say that stray dogs can neither be shifted to deserted areas nor abandoned on city outskirts. As per the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India, street dogs should be left within 100m radius from the pickup places.

The GHMC has decided to increase the number of sterilisations to 400 per day from the existing 150.

“We are taking all necessary measures to address the problem,” said Greater Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi.

She has also announced an all-party committee to find a solution for the stray dog menace in the city. The panel will have two corporators from each political party.

Experts say dumping of garbage on the streets and in open places and hotels, function halls, chicken and mutton shops throwing waste on roads are the biggest reasons for the increasing population of stray dogs.

The municipal authorities have been directed to restrict the hotels, restaurants, function halls, chicken and mutton outlets within the GHMC limits from dumping waste on the streets.

The officials have been told to take action against establishments that dispose of garbage on streets as this attracts stray dogs.

Arvind Kumar, Secretary, Municipal Administration, instructed the GHMC officials that the ABC (Animal Birth Control) sterilisation operations should be carried out immediately.

The officials were advised to take control measures with the help of Slum Development Federations, Town Development Federations and Resident Colony Welfare Associations within the limits of the city and neighbouring municipalities. Control measures in other municipalities in the state will be taken up with the help of self-help groups.

He advised officials to prepare a separate mobile app for registration of pets in the city and surrounding municipalities. Identity cards will be issued to the owners concerned as per registration.

This assumed significance in the wake of a recent incident in Hyderabad in which a 23-year-old food delivery boy jumping off the third floor of a building out of fear when a pet dog charged at him.

After battling for life for four days, Mohammed Rizwan (23) breathed his last. Rizwan, who was working for food delivery app Swiggy, had gone to an apartment building in Banjara Hills to deliver a parcel on January 11.

When he knocked on the door of the flat, a German Shepherd came charging towards him. Rizwan, while trying to save himself, jumped from the third floor and sustained grievous injuries.

The victim’s family had said that no action was taken against the pet dog’s owner.

“Extremely disturbed to see pictures of the mutilated body of Abdul Rashid from Kunan Poshpora. Wasn’t allowed to visit the family under the pretext of security. What transpired after the Army picked him up for questioning months ago is anybody’s guess,” former Chief Minister Mehbooba said in a tweet.

  • Almost every second corona death lived in a home

Almost every second corona death lived in a home

    [ad_1]

ILooking back, it becomes clear how badly Corona has raged among old people. Almost every second corona death in Germany comes from a nursing home, as the nursing report by the Barmer Krankenkasse, which is available to the Düsseldorf Rheinische Post, shows. “In relation to the years 2020 and 2021, the cumulative proportion of home residents among those who died with Covid-19 is 45 percent,” write the authors.

At the same time, the report shows that North Rhine-Westphalia has done better than many other countries in the fight against Corona. In December 2021 – at the peak of the second wave – 2.87 percent of the residents of the home fell ill with Corona. That was more than in Bremen (0.57 percent) and Schleswig-Holstein (1.27 percent), but much less than in Thuringia (9.73 percent) and Saxony (10.3 percent). “Countries with a lower acceptance of the corona measures also had higher proportions of Covid in the population,” the authors write. Saxony and Thuringia have particularly low vaccination rates.

The Corona years left deep marks on nursing staff nationwide. According to the Barmer study, almost 70 percent say that they are often physically exhausted, compared to 43 percent before the pandemic. The number of nurses who can no longer sleep through the night has risen from 29 percent to 43 percent. Now many want to get out: 43 percent have thought about giving up their job. Before the pandemic, it was just under 20 percent.

“As a society, we cannot afford for the staffing situation in nursing homes to worsen because employees give up,” said Heiner Beckmann, head of Barmer in NRW, and called for more health management and nursing care reform from a single source.

  • Pre-existing conditions and causes: why sudden cardiac death affects young people

Pre-existing conditions and causes: why sudden cardiac death affects young people

    [ad_1]

Sudden cardiac death not only affects older people – young people can also die unexpectedly. What could be the underlying causes.

Berlin – Millions of people worldwide die from sudden cardiac death every year – in Germany are they according to that German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) about 65,000 per year. That is around 20 percent of all cardiovascular deaths – a good third of them are younger than 65 years. kreiszeitung.de explains which causes and previous illnesses in young people can trigger sudden cardiac death.

24-year-old dies unexpectedly from SADS – “ten minutes later there was no pulse”

The reason for this question a few months ago was a young stewardess who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 24 from the so-called “Sudden Adult/Arrhythmic Death Syndrome” (SADS). “This 24-year-old woman was a cabin crew member on a flight from Albania and was on the tarmac when she passed out and was given basic first aid,” coroner Michelle Brown told the British tabloid dailymail. Ten minutes later there was no pulse and cardiopulmonary resuscitation began. The young woman could not be saved.

65,000 Germans die from it every year: what makes sudden cardiac death different from SADS

As with the stewardess, sudden cardiac death seems to be completely unexpected – but it is often preceded by long-term cardiovascular disease. At this point, however, a distinction must first be made between “Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome” (translated: sudden arrhythmic death syndrome) and sudden cardiac death (“Sudden Cardiac Death”/SCD).

Again Focus reported, in SADS the obvious cause of the sudden cardiac arrest cannot be clarified at autopsy. The structure of the heart does not show any abnormalities. In the case of sudden cardiac death, however, the cause of death can be determined by means of an autopsy. This can be blocked arteries after a heart attack, for example. By the way, what you should currently be aware of are heart attack tips on WhatsApp.

How does sudden cardiac death announce itself – and can you survive it?

Sudden cardiac death is immediately triggered by a malignant cardiac arrhythmia, also known as ventricular fibrillation. According to the DZHK, the circulatory system of the affected person collapses within a few seconds, the heart stops beating and the blood pressure drops to zero. A few seconds later, the person becomes unconscious, a few minutes later, breathing stops, and after about ten minutes, death occurs.

There is only a chance of survival if countermeasures are started immediately. However, for every minute that the heart stops, the chance of survival decreases by ten percent.

Causes of sudden cardiac death: Which previous illnesses are common at which age

The most common pre-existing condition in the event of sudden cardiac death is the DZHK according to coronary heart disease. The coronary arteries in the affected person are narrowed. Dietrich Andresen, former CEO of the German Heart Foundation, can also confirm this. “Sudden cardiac death is usually the complication of a long-standing cardiovascular disease, also known as coronary artery disease,” explains Andresen Focus and adds: “The best protection against sudden cardiac death is therefore protection against coronary artery disease.”

Coronary heart disease occurs – often as a result of other diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and dyslipidemia – but most often in people over 40 years of age. Cardiac hypertrophy (HCM), a genetic disease, is one of the most common reasons for sudden cardiac death in young people. The DZHK according to 1 in 500 people has the genetic traits for HCM. In the disease, the musculature of the heart thickens due to excessive growth of heart muscle cells.

In addition, other diseases such as myocarditis and congenital heart defects can also lead to sudden cardiac death in young people. Again Focus reported, the use of drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines in younger people can also be a cause of SCD.

Drugs also play a role in causing sudden cardiac death

In principle, in addition to these causes and previous illnesses, sudden cardiac death can be caused by any disease that triggers cardiac arrhythmia. According to the DZHK, in 80 percent of cases these cardiac arrhythmias are caused by an unforeseeable heart attack.

With our newsletter you won’t miss anything from your area, Germany and the world – register now for free!

Sudden cardiac death should be taken seriously at any age – and SADS especially at a young age: Because, according to Danish researchers in a study cardiology.org found that the proportion of people who died from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome decreased with age – although the syndrome was responsible for a significant proportion of deaths in all age groups studied between one and 49 years.
