Iran says US pullout from nuclear deal ‘fatal blow’ to rule of law

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator said on Tuesday that the United States dealt a “fatal blow” to the rule of law at the international level by its “unlawful” withdrawal from a 2015 nuclear deal five years ago.

Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for political affairs, made the remarks in a post on his Twitter page one day after the fifth anniversary of the US unilateral pullout from the nuclear deal in 2018, Xinhua news agency reported.

Ever since its withdrawal, the US has failed to reverse its “wrongful” deeds, said the Iranian official, stressing that Iran will continue its “legitimate” remedial measures under the nuclear pact.

    MS Education Academy

The full implementation of the nuclear deal, the main precondition for which is the “effective and lasting” removal of the sanctions, could be resumed should “the reneging party”, the European Union, and E3 group of France, Britain and Germany demonstrate “credible” political will to that effect, he said.

Kani said the opportunity to resume the full implementation of the nuclear deal would not be available forever.

Iran signed the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with world powers in July 2015, agreeing to put some curbs on its nuclear programme in return for the removal of the sanctions on the country.

The US, however, pulled out of the deal on May 8, 2018 and reimposed its unilateral sanctions on Tehran, prompting the latter to reduce some of its nuclear commitments under the deal.

The talks on the JCPOA’s revival began in April 2021 in Vienna. However, no breakthrough has been achieved after the latest round of talks in August 2022.

The president’s comments came after White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said last week that the administration would not comment on the issue.

“You’ve heard us say many times before, we don’t speak to an ongoing strike,” Jean-Pierre said during a White House briefing.

“But more broadly … President Biden is a strong supporter of workers’ rights to strike,” Jean-Pierre added. “Again, we encourage both sides to stay at the table.”

On Monday, Biden spoke of the importance the entertainment industry has had on America.

“This is an iconic, meaningful American industry,” he told the crowd. “And we need the writers and all the workers and everyone involved to tell the stories of our nation and the stories of all of us.”

She emphasised the significance of the agreement, saying that “in just a few years, Boeing planes will transport millions of tourists to the Kingdom, and for many of them, this trip may be their first, which would contribute to deepening the relations between our peoples and would also contribute to the rapprochement of our cultures.”

Taking to Twitter, Princess Reema wrote, “Delighted to be in Charleston, South Carolina to meet with the Boeing team & celebrate the agreement between @Saudi_Airlines, #RiyadhAir & @BoeingAirplanes, which will propel KSA into a global logistics hub & generate 200.000 direct & indirect Saudi jobs & countless opportunities.”

“This historic investment will create around 100,000 direct & indirect jobs in the US across several states, including hundreds of suppliers and many small businesses,” She adds.

“We’re proud to partner with American companies to shape a more prosperous, secure future for KSA & the Middle,” she added.

In March, Saudi Arabia signed a 37 billion dollars deal with US company Boeing to purchase up to 121 aircraft to help launch the new airline in the Kingdom ‘Riyadh Air’.

The deal will see the delivery of GE-powered Boeing 787 Dreamliners to Saudi Arabia, with 72 of the aircraft destined for Riyadh Air.

This is the fifth-largest commercial aircraft deal by value in Boeing’s history.

  • Will Lionel Messi leave PSG to move to Saudi club in Rs 3272 cr deal?

Will Lionel Messi leave PSG to move to Saudi club in Rs 3272 cr deal?

    [ad_1]

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is preparing to offer Argentina footballer Lionel Messi, the most lucrative salary deal of USD 400 million (Rs 32,72,18,00,000) annually to move to the Saudi Professional League this summer, the British Telegraph reported.

Discussions are ongoing to determine whether the player will leave PSG when his contract expires at the end of June.

If the deal gets materialized, this would be around twice what was offered to Messi’s rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, when he moved to Saudi club Al Nassr.

    MS Education Academy

Ronaldo penned a record 177 million pounds-a-year deal after Manchester United ripped up his contract.

According to the report by The Telegraph, Messi’s deal is being negotiated by his father Jorge. Messi has been associated with the Saudi club Al-Hilal several times over the past few months.

These reports come in light of the tense relationship between Messi and the management of the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) club.

PSG suspended Messi on Tuesday, for two weeks after he travelled to Saudi Arabia without permission from the organization, according to CNN.

In 2022, Messi was appointed tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia and was in the Kingdom this week as part of that contract.

Recently, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, the Minister of Tourism for the country, tweeted updated photos of the Argentine.

“We welcome visitors from around the world to experience a unique journey to Saudi Arabia and its hospitality,” he tweeted.

Messi himself recently posted on social media about the country. He captioned an image of some trees, “Who would have thought Saudi Arabia had so much greenery? I love exploring its unexpected wonders whenever I can. #visitaudi.”

  • Senate Dems plan hearings to pick apart GOP debt deal

Senate Dems plan hearings to pick apart GOP debt deal

    [ad_1]

    chuck schumer 45513

The Senate Budget Committee hearing on Thursday will feature Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics and leaders of the Environmental Defense Fund and the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Republicans and Democrats remain at loggerheads over debt ceiling negotiations, just as entrenched as they were before the House passed its GOP debt ceiling and spending cuts package. House Republicans were certain that their starting bid to rollback federal spending in exchange for lifting the debt limit would force President Joe Biden to the negotiating table. But last week’s action on the House GOP package has yet to move the needle much.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday that Republicans are “demanding hostage negotiations” while House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) told “This Week” that Biden is “running out the clock” on the debt limit.

Now the House is out of town, leaving the Senate to weigh in on the GOP proposal and how Biden should handle it. And Treasury Department officials are expected to update the public soon on the “X date,” before which Congress will need to pass a debt limit lift to avoid default, in the coming days. That will ramp up the pressure, but it’s not yet clear what will get leaders to budge.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said last week that Biden not getting in a room with Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to negotiate on the debt limit “signals a deficiency of leadership, and it must change.” The West Virginia Democrat said “we are long past time for our elected leaders to sit down and discuss how to solve this impending debt ceiling crisis” and called on Biden to “negotiate now.”

Most other Democrats aren’t going that far. They are talking about talks, but have so far drawn a distinction between talks on spending and negotiations on the debt limit.

“[Biden] will sit down with Speaker McCarthy to talk about these issues in the framework of the budget and the appropriations process,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) told “Fox News Sunday.” But not the president should not negotiate over the debt limit, Van Hollen said.

And Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said on Sunday that Biden can “start negotiating tomorrow” on possible spending cuts but stressed that those talks can only move forward if Republicans commit to raising the debt limit.

“I’m willing to look at any other proposals. There’s a lot of waste within government. Let’s go after it. But don’t go to war against the working class of this country, lower-income people,” Sanders said.

Republicans maintain that what they view as government overspending and the nation’s growing debt are inextricably linked and that conversations about each cannot be separated.

“As we’re addressing the debt limit, we also have to address the problem that got us here,” Scalise said on “This Week.”

The House majority leader also challenged Senate Democrats to put forth their own legislation.

“If they’ve got a better idea, I want to see that bill and tell them to pass it through the Senate,” Scalise said.

  • Hochul announces ‘conceptual’ budget deal

    Hochul announces ‘conceptual’ budget deal

    [ad_1]

    screen shot 2023 04 27 at 8 30 12 pm

Hochul framed the deal as a win for affordability in the state, but recognized she didn’t get one of her top priorities: A housing deal to force municipalities to build 800,000 new homes over the next decade. The budget will include $391 million in rental assistance, which will largely help the troubled New York City Housing Authority.

“Did we accomplish what this moment called for?” she said in an evening briefing in the Capitol. “Did we make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers? We’re going to be able to answer that question yes.”

When the budget will be finalized and passed by the Legislature is unclear.; legislative leaders did not attend her briefing. Lawmakers have mostly returned to their districts, and no bills were printed at the time of Hochul’s announcement. It will thus likely be several days until the passage of the spending plan that was due to pass by March 31.

“There’s obviously fine tuning that has to be done. That’ll be worked out over the weekend,” Hochul said.

While details will not be known until the bills are printed, Hochul outlined some of the highlights, many of which have been expected and reported.

Those include the third set of changes to the state’s bail reform laws since they were enacted in 2019. This round includes language that gives judges more discretion to hold individuals accused of certain violent crimes.

But a proposal to change the laws on discovery to avoid cases being tossed on procedural grounds failed at the last minute. Hochul placed the blame on district attorneys, who have said that the requirements to quickly share evidence with arrestees is unmanageable. Instead, the courts are getting more money to increase staff and resources, she said.

“We thought we had a plan that met the needs, and the district attorneys decided that was not the path they wanted to go on despite saying so initially,” the Democratic governor said.

The budget will also include language designed to crack down on illegal marijuana retailers, which was one of the final sticking points in the budget. It will be “aggressive” and attempt to penalize those sellers who aren’t paying taxes, but there appears to be more fine-tuning required.

“We’re working on the details of that,” said Hochul’s counsel Liz Fine.

The deal will also include a plan to raise the minimum wage to $17 an hour, starting with $16 an hour next year in New York City, and then indexing it to inflation within a few years.

On transit, the budget will create a pilot program for free service on five MTA bus lines, and the city will be on the hook for $165 million to fund the transit system — rather than $500 million as Hochul originally proposed, as well as limiting a payroll mobility tax only to the city, not the suburbs.

It will also include the largest Medicaid rate increase in two decades, Hochul said, who added the budget “makes critical policy changes” in the area of mental health and funds 1,000 new in-patient psychiatric beds as well as 3,500 units of supportive housing.

The budget includes $400 million for utility relief as well as a requirement that homes constructed after 2025 meet zero emission standard.

As expected, the budget includes minimal language on housing, she noted.

“I believe major action is required to meet the scale of this crisis. The legislature saw it differently,” Hochul said.

But she promised to continue “working hard and fighting” on the topic and teased executive actions which will be announced “in the coming weeks.”

  • Lamar Jackson reportedly ends rift with Ravens and agrees to record $260m deal

Lamar Jackson reportedly ends rift with Ravens and agrees to record $260m deal

    [ad_1]

Lamar Jackson will remain a Baltimore Raven for the foreseeable future after agreeing to a five-year contract extension that will reportedly make him the highest-paid player in the league.

The former NFL MVP had requested a trade earlier this year as he struggled to reach agreement on a new deal with the team that drafted him in 2018. At the time he said the Ravens had “not been interested in meeting my value”. The quarterback has been looking for a contract similar to the fully guaranteed $230m deal Deshaun Watson was given by the Cleveland Browns last year.

The contract is worth $260m including $185m in guaranteed money, ESPN reported, citing a source. That makes Jackson the highest-paid player in the team’s history and in the NFL today at $52m per year.

“For the last few months, there has been a lot of he said, she said,” Jackson said in a video posted to the Ravens’ official Twitter account. “A lot of nail-biting. A lot of head-scratching going on.”

Jackson then held up a football with the team’s logo and said,:“But for the next five years, it’s a lot of ‘flock’ going on.”

In March, the Ravens applied the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson, meaning he would be paid $32.4m this season but he could join any team who offered him a better deal. There appeared to be no offers for Jackson when the Ravens applied the tag, leading many to believe no other teams wanted to match the quarterback’s demands.

Jackson was named the 2019 NFL MVP, and his dynamic passing and running make him one of the game’s most compelling stars. He is already one of six quarterbacks in NFL history with 10,000 yards passing and 4,000 rushing. His 12 games with at least 100 yards rushing are an NFL record.

Jackson has been hurt at the end of the past two seasons, and the Ravens haven’t reached the AFC championship game with him, but his impact on their offense is undeniable.

Iran, Oman hold talks reviving 2015 nuclear deal

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said his country and Oman held consultations on restoring a 2015 nuclear deal and removing the sanctions on Tehran.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in an address to reporters following his meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Hamad al-Busaidi in Muscat, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Iranian top diplomat said that Oman has always played a “constructive” role in the nuclear talks.

    MS Education Academy

Over the past years, Oman has sought to mediate between Iran and the US to help bring the nuclear talks to fruition.

Amir-Abdollahian noted that in the meeting with his Omani counterpart, the two sides agreed to soon hold the meeting of the joint economic commission.

He added that, based on the official invitation extended by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, the two ministers discussed the date for the trip.

Heading a political delegation, Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Muscat on Tuesday for talks on bilateral, regional and international issues with Omani officials.

Iran signed the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with world powers in July 2015, agreeing to put some curbs on its nuclear program in return for the removal of the sanctions on the country.

The US, however, pulled out of the deal in May 2018 and reimposed its unilateral sanctions on Tehran, prompting the latter to reduce some of its nuclear commitments under the deal.

The talks on the JCPOA’s revival began in April 2021 in Vienna, Austria.

No breakthrough has been achieved after the latest round of talks in August 2022.

  • Was there a secret deal between royal family and Murdoch’s media empire?

Was there a secret deal between royal family and Murdoch’s media empire?

    [ad_1]

Among the many extraordinary claims in Prince Harry’s legal case against News UK, one stands out: the allegation that there was a secret deal between Rupert Murdoch’s newspaper group and the monarchy to stop members of the royal family suing over phone hacking.

The prince suggests that this arrangement was known about by his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William and leading courtiers. Harry claims that under the terms of this supposed deal, royal victims of phone hacking would receive a settlement and an apology when all the other phone-hacking cases had concluded.

The objective, he claims, was to ensure members of the royal family were kept out of the witness box and ensure there was no need for a public falling out with a powerful newspaper group that could write negative stories about the royal family.

Harry says the existence of this deal is one of the reasons he waited until 2019 to file legal proceedings against News Group Newspapers, the parent company of the Sun and the News of the World.

The problem is that Rupert Murdoch’s media company has denied such a deal exists and claims Harry simply missed a legal deadline to file his paperwork. It wants a judge to throw out the case before it goes to trial next year on the basis that the royal should have suspected he was potentially a victim at a much earlier time.

Harry has not provided any evidence of the alleged agreement, although if such a sensitive arrangement was made then it is possible that it was verbal rather than on paper.

Even Harry is unsure who told him about the supposed deal. According to legal filings, the royal was informed of the deal’s existence alongside his brother at some point in 2012. He says this was by the royal family’s solicitor Gerrard Tyrrell, of Harbottle & Lewis, or someone else from within the institution of the monarchy.

According to his legal filings, the deal between the royal household and “senior executives” at Murdoch’s company would ensure members of the royal family could only bring phone-hacking claims at the conclusion of ongoing phone-hacking cases, and “at that stage the claims would be admitted or settled with an apology”.

Harry’s barrister, David Sherborne, said in written submissions that “discussions and authorisation” from the royal family over the agreement included the late queen and two of her private secretaries, as well as private secretaries for William and Harry.

Harry says he received the support of the queen and her aides when he attempted to push back on the supposed deal in 2017, only to struggle and be repeatedly frustrated by courtiers close to his father, Charles.

Harry claims Murdoch’s company tried to avoid keeping to its part of the supposed deal and issuing a public apology. “I suspect [Murdoch’s newspaper group] was banking on the public becoming bored of phone hacking after so many years and therefore, when it came to the end of the litigation whenever that would be, any apologies that it was forced to give wouldn’t really be newsworthy,” he said in his statement.

However, Anthony Hudson KC, for News Group Newspapers, told the court on Tuesday that there was no evidence of a secret deal and that Harry was asserting the existence of the supposed arrangement as a last-minute legal tactic.

“This delay is matched by the extreme vagueness with which the circumstances of the secret agreement are described in the Duke of Sussex’s evidence,” he said.

The barrister pointed out that Harry did not say in his evidence who had made the agreement, whom it applied to, when it was made, or a date when it was meant to expire. A list of lawyers who had worked in high-profile jobs at Murdoch’s company all insisted they had never heard of such a deal.

Yet the court did hear that at least one member of the royal family had been able to strike a secret deal with Murdoch’s company.

Harry revealed that Prince William had settled his own, not previously publicised phone-hacking claim against Murdoch’s company “for a huge sum of money” in 2020.

Harry asks how his brother’s deal was reached “without any of the public being told”. He suggests William reached a “favourable deal in return for him going ‘quietly’, so to speak”.
