India condoles loss of lives in deadly Peshawar mosque blast

New Delhi [India], January 31 (ANI): India extended condolences to the families of the victims of the deadly terror attack that shook Peshawar in Pakistan on Monday.

So far, the toll of the dead stands at 90 with over 100 people injured, Geo News reported citing Radio Pakistan.

Taking to Twitter, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote, “India extends its deep condolences to the families of the victims of the terror attack in Peshawar yesterday. We strongly condemn this attack, which has taken the lives of so many people.”

The explosion took place in the central hall of the mosque on Monday at around 1 pm after a suicide bomber blew himself up. A rescue operation is being carried out to pull out bodies from the debris of the mosque, Geo News reported citing an official.

According to security officials, the suicide attacker was present in the front row during the prayers when he blew himself up. The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Speaking to Geo News, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar Mohammad Aijaz Khan said that the explosion appears to be a suicide attack and the head of the suspected bomber has also been found at the site.

“It is possible that the attacker was already present in the Police Lines before the blast and that he may have used an official vehicle [to enter],” Geo News quoted Mohammad Aijaz Khan as saying.

“About 1,500 to 2,000 police officers visit the Police Lines daily,” he added.

Earlier, an eyewitness said there were at least 120 people at the mosque when the explosion took place. He said that the injured mostly included police personnel.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Caretaker Chief Minister Muhammad Azam Khan announced a day of mourning in the province on Tuesday after the attack, according to a Geo News report. He said that the national flag will be at half-mast in the province.

Israel fully responsible for deadly escalation: Palestine

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: Palestine has blamed Israel for the current “serious” tension in the West Bank and Jerusalem, which has left dozens of people dead this month.

“We hold the Israeli government fully responsible for the dangerous escalation that the situation has reached due to its crimes of killing, its continuation of settlement, the annexation of land, and the demolition of homes,” said a statement released by the Palestinian leadership after President Mahmoud Abbas held a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

“These policies are a result of the Israeli occupation government’s evasion of its commitment to implement the signed peace agreements and its violation of international resolutions,” Xinhua News Agency reported quoting the statement.

The Palestinian leadership warned of further deterioration that could threaten security and stability in the entire region.

A gunman opened fire on people near a synagogue at a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem on Friday, killing at least seven people and wounding three others, one day after the Israeli forces raided the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank and killed nine Palestinians and wounded 16 others.

At least 30 Palestinians and eight Israelis have been killed so far this year. In 2022, more than 150 Palestinians and over 20 Israelis were killed in clashes between the two sides, the highest number of deaths in years, according to the United Nations.

Palestinian factions, most notably Hamas and Islamic Jihad, vowed to respond to the escalation. The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday the end of decades-long security coordination with Israel.

Iranian FM condemns deadly attack on Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran

    [ad_1]

Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned an armed attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in the Iranian capital Tehran, in which one person was killed and two others injured.

The Ministry’s spokesman Nasser Kanaani expressed “deep” sympathy to the assassinated embassy member’s family as well as the Azerbaijani government, according to a statement published on the Ministry’s website.

He added the assailant has been arrested by police and security forces and is being interrogated, Xinhua news agency reported.

Kanaani gave the assurance that at the order of the Iranian political and security authorities, the attack is under investigation with high priority and sensitivity.

Mohammad Shahriari, the caretaker Chairman of Tehran Province’s criminal court, said initial investigations showed that personal issues have been behind the attack, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Shahriari said the attacker claimed that his wife went to the embassy in April 2022 and had never returned home, and the assailant had gone to the embassy on numerous occasions looking for his wife but had never received any response.

Shahriari added the attacker said he had believed that his wife was in the embassy, but did not want to meet him.

On Friday morning, the assailant went to the embassy with a Kalashnikov rifle and started shooting, killing one employee and injuring two others, according to Tehran police Chief Hossein Rahimi.

The assailant had entered the embassy with his two young children, he added.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry identified the victim as a guard, who had served as the head of security at the embassy, saying the Friday attack also wounded two people.

Arab League, Egypt condemn deadly Israeli raid in West Bank

    [ad_1]

Cairo: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned in the “strongest terms” an Israeli raid on Jenin city and Jenin refugee camp that reportedly killed at least nine Palestinians.

Aboul Gheit follows the development in the occupied territories with great concern and calls for the international community to protect the Palestinian people, Xinhua news agency reported, citing an Arab League statement.

The state of indifference encourages the occupying forces to commit more crimes under the leadership of a government with hardline plans, Gheit said.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the raids on the Palestinian cities, which threaten the security in the West Bank, must stop immediately.

The ministry warned against the dangerous repercussions of such assaults on the security and stability of the occupied territories.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Israeli soldiers on Thursday “killed at least nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, and injured 20 others, four of whom are in critical conditions, in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank”.

2 rockets fired from Gaza at Israel after deadly West Bank raid

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Two rockets fired from Gaza at southern Israel were intercepted by the Israeli aerial defence systems early on Friday, following the killing of nine Palestinians by Israeli soldiers earlier.

No injuries and damage were reported.

The rockets, fired just after midnight between Thursday and Friday, triggered sirens in the southern city of Ashkelon and the communities of kibbutz Zikim and Karmia, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by the Israeli military spokesperson.

“Two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip,” the spokesperson said. “The rockets were intercepted by the IDF Aerial Defence Array.”

No group immediately assumed responsibility for the rockets.

Tensions were simmering after Israeli forces killed nine Palestinians, including a 61-year-old woman, in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Thursday morning. The army said the raid was carried out to foil “a terror squad” that planned an attack against Israelis.
