    Ankara: At least 1,651 people were killed, 11,119 were injured, 2,834 buildings collapsed, and hundreds remain fearful of being trapped under the rubble after a earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Turkey, at dawn on Monday, Anadolu Agency reported.

    The Syrian Health Ministry says the death toll in government-held areas of Syria climbed to 539 people, with some 1,300 injured and in rebel-held areas, more than 380 people were killed.

    According to information Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, the quake occurred at 4:17 am local time.

    Kahramanmaraş Hatay and Osmaniye were the cities most affected by the quake.

    The citizens in Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Palestinian territories, Armenia, Georgia and Egypt, felt the aftershocks of the earthquake.

    According to German Center for Geosciences Research a 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook central Turkey early Monday morning.

    American Center for Earthquakes said that the magnitude of the earthquake that struck southern Turkey was 7.9 magnitude.

    The 6 aftershocks of more than 6 degrees on the Richter scale were monitored.

    Pictures broadcast by TRT showed damage to buildings and people gathering on the streets.

    As per a report by Reuters, the quake lasted about a minute and shattered windows. 

    The Turkish Interior Minister said that the ministry’s crews are running the rescue operation in the quake-stricken area in the south of the country, which is subject to aftershocks.

    Erdogan: We raised a level four alert

    Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, that “all our teams are on alert, we have raised a level four alert, and this alert includes international assistance.”

    He added, “We cannot currently provide clear statements about information related to material and human losses.”

    Video clips showed people trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings in Turkish and Syrian cities.

    Turkey is located in a region with seismic activity that is among the highest in the world.

    In November 2022, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck northwest Turkey, leaving about 50 injured, according to Turkish ambulance services.

    Another earthquake that struck the Izig region in January 2020 killed more than 40 people.

    In October of the same year, a 7-magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea, killing 114 people and injuring more than a thousand others.

    SRINAGAR: Bodies of two persons, from Karnah and Tangdhar, are lying in mortuary at District Hospital Handwara amid continuous blockade of roads in the aftermath of recent snowfall.

    According to news agency GNS the two bodies of two elderly persons; Haji Qalandar Mir (65), son of Abdul Gaffar Mir, resident of Dildar Karnah and Alamdin Khattana (60), son of Abdulla Khattana, resident of Dragad Tangdhar lie at the hospital mortuary. While the body of Haji Qalandar, who passed away at Hamdania Colony, Bemina Srinagar, reached the hospital on January 30, 2023, the body of Alamdin Khattana reached on February 1, 2023.

    Meanwhile the bereaved family members on Wednesday sought the assistance of district administration to ferry back the bodies to respective native places.

    “We urge the district administration to lend us chopper services’ so that we are able to take the bodies from here”, the families unanimously urged.

    The aggrieved residents in the meantime also appealed Lieutenant Governor led administration to expedite the process of tunnel digging so that they don’t have to suffer in wake of time to time weather vagaries.

    SRINAGAR: Two foreign tourists died while 21 others were rescued after a massive snow avalanche hit Afarwat peak at famous ski-resort in Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday.

    Quoting Sub-divisional officer Tangmarg, Javid Ahmad news agency KNO reported that an avalanche struck near Afarwat Peak this afternoon.

    He said following the incident a rescue operation was launched, during which twol bodies of a foreign tourists were recovered.

    He also said 21 others, who were trapped there, have been rescued, while operation has been closed.

    SDPO said the tourists were from Poland and further medical and legal formalities were being conducted.

    SRINAGAR: The family of a man, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances two days ago in Warpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday staged a protest, alleging he was murdered.

    Reports said the family members of the 29-years-old man identified as Shehzad Ahmed Malik of Bunpora Warpora staged a protest by blocking Sopore – Bandipora road at Warpora chowk, demanding the arrest of the culprit.

    They alleged that the man was murdered and demanded a thorough probe into the incident.

    Meanwhile, Police said they have already registered a case in this regard and investigations were going on.

    Notably, Malik’s body was found under mysterious circumstances in his neighbouring locality on January 30.

    Jammu, Jan 28 (GNS): four members of a family comprising a couple and their young daughters died apparently due to asphyxia in Balihote area of Ramban district. 

    Local reports reaching GNS said that the family of Chain Singh, his wife and daughter were found dead in their kucha house. “One more daughter was brought to District Hospital.”  

     “At least 3 members of a family were found dead due to asphyxiation in Balihote, Tehsil Ramban. One girl found alive has been shifted for medical treatment,” Deputy Commissioner Ramban said in a tweet.

    Later he said one female person who was shifted in a critical condition to the hospital has also passed away. “Toll now 4.” He said financial assistance will be provided out of Red Cross.  

    The deceased have been identified as Chain Singh (67), his wife Shankri Devi (62) and their daughters Sonika Devi (40) and Tesha Devi (30).

    The incident came to light after Chain Singh’s neighbours went to their house after noticing no movement inside. He raised alarm following which other neighbors rushed to the spot and also shifted the Singh’s daughter to hospital who unfortunately also died later, reports said. Also some domestic animals were found dead in the single-room Kacha house. A police official said that a case has been registered and further investigation is on. (GNS)
