Scientists of IIIT Hyderabad, RRI Bengaluru represent India on World Quantum Day

Hyderabad: India on Friday joined over 65 nations in celebrating the 2nd World Quantum Day.
Since 2021, April 14 has been designated as World Quantum Day globally to mark the research efforts using quantum technologies. April 14 was selected by the World Quantum Network aimed at promoting the public understanding of Quantum Science and Technology globally.
April 14 is significant as it is a reference to 4.14, the rounded first digits of Planck’s constant – 4.135667696×10-15 eV/Hz, a product of energy and time that is the fundamental constant governing quantum physics.

This network constitutes scientist representatives from over 65 countries. Representing India are professor Urbasi Sinha from the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, and professor Arun K Pati, Head of Centre for Quantum Science and Technology, International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH), a press note informed.
“It is lovely to have a day in the year dedicated to celebrate all things quantum. RRI has been at the forefront of quantum technology research in the country. I am excited at the future prospects in this field for Indian researchers,” said Prof. Urbasi Sinha, Group Head, Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab at RRI.
Sharing his views on quantum technologies, Professor Arun K. Pati, Head of Centre for Quantum Science and Technology, International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) said, “Quantum Mechanics rules all the happenings in the universe. More so, quantum mechanics has given rise to revolutionary fields of Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, and Quantum Technology – all of which will have a lasting contributions to society at large.”
This year’s World Quantum Day commemorated the Nobel Prize in Physics (2022) which was awarded to the trio Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger for their efforts and experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science.
In India, online and physical events were organised to mark this day. Around the world 350 events were planned to observe this day, the WQN website said.

Bombay HC Rejects Professor’s Plea To Quash FIR For “Aug 5 Black Day For JK” Status

SRINAGAR: The Bombay High Court has declined to dismiss a criminal case against a college professor from Kolhapur, who shared a message on his WhatsApp status that referred to the abrogation of Article 370 as “August 5 Black Day (for) Jammu and Kashmir.” The basis for the FIR was two WhatsApp statuses he posted, one stating “AUGUST 5 BLACK DAY JAMMU & KASHMIR” and the other saying “14th August Happy Independence Day, Pakistan.” The Central government revoked Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir, on August 5, 2019, reported The Hindustan Times.
“In our view, this message has the tendency to play with emotions of different groups of people as there are strong feelings of contrasting nature about the status of Jammu and Kashmir in India,” The Hindustan Times reported while quoting the bench of justice Sunil Shukre and justice MM Sathaye while rejecting plea filed by Javed Ahmad Hajam, a professor with Sanjay Ghodawat College in Kolhapur.
Hajam appealed to the High Court to dismiss the FIR filed against him by the Hatkanangale police station in Kolhapur district under Section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code, on charges of promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste, community, or any other grounds that could lead to disharmony or feelings of hatred or ill-will. The FIR was based on two WhatsApp statuses that he posted, one stating “AUGUST 5 BLACK DAY JAMMU & KASHMIR” and the other saying “14th August Happy Independence Day, Pakistan.” Hajam was a member of a parent-teachers association WhatsApp group at the college, and someone from the group reported the matter to the police.
Hajam argued that he did not share any derogatory message or any message with the intention of stirring up hatred or ill-will. He claimed that his status messages did not cause any disharmony or disturbance of public tranquillity. However, a prosecutor opposed his plea, stating that the petitioner, a college professor, expressed his likes and dislikes in a casual manner without providing any reason or justification, which could lead to an initial inference of an offense punishable under Section 153-A. The High Court agreed with the prosecutor’s argument and rejected Hajam’s petition.
The bench said in a democratic country like India, with a fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression available to its citizens, “every word of criticism and every view of dissent is important for maintaining democracy in a good state of health.”
The court stated that in sensitive matters, it is important to express critical words or dissenting views only after conducting a thorough analysis of the situation and providing reasons for the criticism or dissent. The bench added that this is particularly important when emotions and sentiments surrounding the thing or aspect being criticized vary greatly among different groups of people. In such cases, criticism or disagreement should be accompanied by in-depth analysis and reasons so that it appeals to reason rather than emotions.
“Whenever an appeal is to the reason, there is the least possibility of stirring up emotions and whenever an appeal is to the emotions, the reason is the casualty,” the bench said. “And, when reason falls victim to emotions, there results ill-will, hatred, public disturbance and negativity all around. Such is the importance of criticism based upon critical analysis and same being not here, now it would be required to be examined on merits; if the WhatsApp status message in question, really brought about the consequences contemplated under Section 153-A of the IPC or not, which would be possible only upon appreciation of evidence at the trial.”
HC said prima facie posting of the DP constituted an offence under section 153-A of IPC.

Fire Service Day Observed In Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Fire Service Day was observed in Srinagar to pay homage to those martyrs of Jammu and Kashmir who have attended emergencies in great odds and sacrificed their precious lives while fighting fires.
In this regard a function was observed at Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters Batamaloo Srinagar. April 14 is observed as “National Fire Service Day”. “Two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to the Martyrs and wreaths were laid on the Martyr’s Column as mark of respect to the brave fire fighters,” according to a statement issued by the department.
Bashir Ahmad Shah, Joint Director Fire & Emergency Services Kashmir Range Srinagar, presided over the function.
He briefed the officers and personnel of the services and stressed upon them that they shall never show their back to fire and they should always be prepared to even sacrifice their lives for saving the precious lives and property of people as the motto of “our services which is “We Serve To Save”.”
Such functions were also organized at all District Headquarters of the J&K and at Station Level, the statement said. Fire Service week will be observed throughout the J&K from April 14 to 20.
This year’s theme is “Awareness in Fire Safety for growth of National Infrastructure (AGNI)”.

Mumbai logs over 300 COVID-19 cases, records 2 deaths in day after 7 months

Mumbai: Mumbai on Wednesday recorded 320 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily count since September 3, 2022, taking the overall tally to 11,59,545, while two more patients succumbed to the infection in the metropolis, the local civic body said.
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin said the two new coronavirus-linked deaths pushed up the toll to 19,752.
This was the first time after September 22, 2022, that the financial capital has recorded two deaths due to the respiratory illness in a span of 24 hours.

The deceased were a 50-year-old male patient with chronic lung disease and an 81-year-old man suffering from pneumonia, said the civic body.
On Tuesday, the city had logged 242 COVID-19 cases, but no fatality.
On September 3, 2022, Maharashtra had reported 394 cases.
Mumbai’s active caseload crossed the 1,500-mark and stood at 1,577 due to the widening gap between new and recovered cases, as per the bulletin.
According to the BMC, 219 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative number to 11,38,216.

In the wake of recent spurt in COVID-19 cases, Mumbai’s civic body has made face masks mandatory inside the premises of all municipal hospitals from April 10. It has also appealed to citizens above 60 years of age and BMC employees to wear masks as a precautionary measure though face covering is not mandatory.
As per the bulletin, the city’s coronavirus recovery rate stood at 98.2 per cent, while the growth rate of cases between April 5 and 11 was 0.0171 per cent.
The case doubling rate was 3,882 days, it added.

N.Korea unresponsive to regular contact via liaison line for 6th day

Seoul: North Korea remained unresponsive to daily routine calls with South Korea through an inter-Korean liaison communication channel for a sixth straight day on Wednesday, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said.
The North was unresponsive to the 9 a.m. routine opening calls, and has not answered the calls from the South since April 7, according to the Ministry.
Seoul’s opening call via the militaries’ East and West seas communication lines also went unanswered, reports Yonhap News Agency.

The two Koreas typically hold two phone calls daily, at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., as part of communication between liaisons.
In July 2021, the North restored the inter-Korean hotline, about a year after it severed the contact channel in protest of Seoul activists’ leaflet campaigns critical of Pyongyang.
The liaison line was again cut off in August that year for about two months in apparent protest against Seoul-Washington’s military exercises.
The latest suspension of the hotlines comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula following the North’s recent weapons tests in protest of joint military drills between South Korea and the US.
On Tuesday, South Korean Unification Minister Kwon Young-se issued a rare statement expressing “strong regret” over the North’s “unilateral and irresponsible” move.

Compensate woman for illegal detention for a day, SC to Maha Police officers

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked police officers in Maharashtra to compensate a woman for keeping her in illegal detention despite she being granted interim protection and two weeks to surrender it.
A bench of Justices S.K. Kaul and A. Amanullah observed that the woman, an accused in a criminal case, got the interim protection on November 17, 2021 and the apex court had granted her two weeks’ to surrender and apply for regular bail.
Expressing discontent with the illegal detention of the woman, the bench noted that the court had given interim protection to the petitioner and despite the same, she was taken into custody.

The petitioner had submitted before the court that she had also shown the court’s order to the police, though she was bailed out next but she was in custody for a day.
The top court ordered that the petitioner should be compensated with Rs 15,000 for the illegal detention for one day which will be shared by the two police officers and the payment to be made within a period of two weeks.
The bench noted that two police officers filed their affidavit seeking to express unconditional apology. However, the bench said that behaviour of the officers was in the teeth of the court’s order and cautioned the police officers to be careful in future.
The top court passed the order on a contempt plea filed by the woman against two police officers. In a previous order passed in January this year, the bench had noted petitioner’s counsel arguments that despite the November 2021 order, within two days the woman was arrested from a hospital where she was working as a nurse.
The bench noted that the police officers were ready to compensate the woman from their own pocket in the matter.

In 2021, the woman had moved the apex court challenging the Bombay High Court order, passed in August 2021, refusing to entertain her plea for anticipatory bail in the case.

Group Captain Dismissed For Attack On Own Copter, Day After Balakot Strike

SRINAGAR: Group Captain Suman Roy Chowdhury, then Chief Operations Officer of Srinagar Air Force Station, has been dismissed by a General Court Martial (GCM) in Delhi for a missile attack on a friendly Mi-17 helicopter on February 27, 2019. The attack resulted in the death of six Air Force personnel and a civilian. The incident took place a day after the Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike in Balakot, Pakistan, reported The Tribune.
As per The Tribune, The GCM held Group Captain Chowdhury guilty on five of the nine charges. He was held guilty of not obeying the general order issued by Air Headquarters, dated July 14, 2017, which required all aircraft operating north of latitude 3200 N to operate with Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) on. He permitted Mi-17 to get airborne from Srinagar without the IFF on. He was held guilty of assigning an inbound flying object to the missile unit at 10:10 am on February 27, 2019, at 23 km from the Srinagar base for engagement by the Mission Commander, Command and Control Unit of 2258 Squadron. As a consequence, the assigned flying target, which actually was friendly copter Mi-17, was shot down by a Spyder missile at 10:14 am. The mishap caused a loss of Rs 133.31 crore to the state.
The court-martial found Wing Commander Shyam Naithani, who was the Senior Air Traffic Control Officer at the time of the incident, not guilty on four charges and gave him a severe reprimand for one charge.
The findings of the GCM and the sentence were subject to confirmation by the IAF Chief, according to Air Force officials. The High Court had allowed the GCM to pronounce the findings against Group Captain Chowdhury but ordered that these must not be given effect till the disposal of the case before it. The High Court is yet to dispose of the case, The Tribune reported.
The missile attack on the friendly Mi-17 helicopter resulted in the death of Squadron Leaders S Vashisht and Ninand M, Sergeant VK Pandey, Sergeant Vikrant Sahrawat, Corporal Pankaj Kumar, Corporal D Pandey, and Kifayat Hussain Ganie, a civilian on the ground and resident of Budgam district.
Group Captain Chowdhury had urged the GCM not to proceed with the pronouncement of the sentence till the case was in the High Court. His counsel Captain Sandeep Bansal (retd) said they would challenge the decision before the High Court.

Parliamentary Committee Led By Nitin Gadkari On Two Day Visit To Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A delegation of eight members of parliament both from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha headed by Nitan Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway arrived in summer capital Srinagar on Sunday, officials said.
Quoting an official, news agency Kashmir Dot Com reported that eight members of Parliament from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha arrived in Srinagar for two days to check the ground situation in Kashmir.
Gadkari will also address the MPs, who are part of Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Ministry Of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) at Sonamarg.
They will meet top officials of the JK administration here and would visit Sonamarg in Ganderbal district on Monday to review the progress of work on twin tunnels coming up on the Srinagar-Leh Highway including Asia’s longest Zojila Tunnel and Z-Morh Tunnel, he said

BRS to organise formation day celebrations

Hyderabad: Gearing up for Assembly elections scheduled later this year, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Sunday decided to organize its formation day celebrations across Telangana.
BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao asked the party cadres to conduct the programmes on a grand scale.
He also announced that BRS formation day celebrations will be held at party headquarters Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad on April 27.

BRS President and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will hoist the party flag to launch the celebrations.
The same day, the BRS general body meeting will be held which will be presided over by Chandrasekhar Rao.
The meeting, involving 300 BRS representatives, will discuss some political resolutions and pass them.
As a precursor to the formation day celebrations, meetings of party delegates will be held at constituency level on April 25. These meetings will be presided over by Assembly incharges and local MLAs. Party’s district unit presidents will coordinate the programmes.
KTR asked party cadres to hoist the party flag in all villages and wards in the morning and then reach the venues of delegates’ meetings.

The delegates’ meetings will continue throughout the day and will discuss the development achieved by the state under BRS rule, welfare schemes being implemented by the state government and the programmes undertaken by the party.
The meetings will be attended by all right from field level workers to former MLAs, sitting MLAs, MPs and all the leaders in different designations. Each meeting would witness participation of about 2,500 to 3,000 party members.
In the wake of the summer season, the BRS Working President directed party MLAs and incharge leaders to make elaborate arrangements, including food, accommodation and provision of butter milk.
KTR said that the party’s Athmeeya Sammelans being held across the state evoked good response from BRS cadres.
He announced that these meetings will continue till the end of May.
He also said a massive public meeting BRS Maha Sabha will be held at Warangal on October 10.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which became BRS late last year, was floated by KCR on April 27, 2001 after resigning from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to revive the movement for statehood to Telangana.

The Day Donald Trump Surrendered

It was a long day for former President Donald Trump, as he traveled from Trump Tower in midtown to the Manhattan Criminal Court, where he surrendered to law enforcement and learned the exact charges he faces for alleged hush money payments. And it was a long day for everyone else touched by the event, from supporters to opponents to lawyers, police and preachers.
The notoriously outspoken former president slipped in and out of the courthouse quietly in a black SUV. The crowd in lower Manhattan displayed their anger or approval before fixing their eyes on the sight of one of the most famous men in America, who was once president of the United States and who is now running to be president again, turning himself in for arrest.
Photographer Yunghi Kim spent the day with the crowds, and her photos captured the spectacle that even the former president called “surreal.”
