Israel marks 75th Independence Day amid protests

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel marked its 75th Independence Day amid protests and political divisions between supporters and opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “contentious plan to overhaul the judiciary”.

The celebration on Tuesday began at sundown, with an official torch-lighting ceremony held at the Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. As Netanyahu spoke at the state ceremony for the fallen soldiers at Mount Herzl, protesters rallied outside the site, Xinhua news agency reported.

Tens of thousands of Israelis rallied in the city of Tel Aviv for what the organisers called an “Independence Party” to protest the overhaul plan. The Tel Aviv police blocked parts of the Ayalon Highway and several main streets.

    MS Education Academy

Over the past few days, Netanyahu and opposition leaders called for putting their differences aside. However, the day was still marked by clashes as bereaved families laid wreaths and lit candles at cemeteries across Israel.

In Beersheba, where hardline National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir spoke, clashes erupted between some bereaved families and the supporters of the judicial reforms.

“Ben-Gvir came here despite repeated calls by bereaved families over the past days, asking him not to do so. It a disgraceful provocation that shows no respect for our fallen sons,” Shaula Levi, a bereaved mother, told Channel 12 TV news.

In the Druze town of Isfiya in northern Israel, protesters prevented Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel from entering the military cemetery. Gamliel had to leave without delivering her scheduled speech.

The far-right government’s plan to “overhaul” the judicial system has torn apart the Israeli society, sparking mass weekly demonstrations over the past four months.

Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, but it marks the Independence Day on different dates every year based on the Hebrew calendar.

  • One person has been killed and 10 wounded in a strike on a museum in Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said: “The terrorist country is doing everything to destroy us completely. Our history, our culture, our people. Killing Ukrainians with absolutely barbaric methods.”

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a decree establishing temporary control of the Russian assets of two foreign energy firms, signalling Moscow could take similar action against other companies if need be. The decree – outlining possible retaliation if Russian assets abroad are seized – showed Moscow had already taken action against Uniper SE’s Russian division and the assets of Finland’s Fortum Oyj.

  • The number of daily casualties Russia is suffering has fallen by about 30% in April, UK intelligence has said. In its daily intelligence briefing, the Ministry of Defence reported that the drop was probably due to the end of Russia’s winter offensive, which, it added, had largely failed. The MoD also said Russia was now likely to be preparing its troops for Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

  • Kyiv admitted it was behind a drone attack in the bay of Sevastopol, Ukrainian authorities confirmed. However, officials rejected Russian claims that the attack had put the operation of the grain corridor at risk.

  • Moscow has seen “practically no results” from a pact with the United Nations that aimed to help Russia’s grain and fertiliser exports, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday. Russia has signalled that unless a list of demands is met to remove obstacles to those exports, it will not agree to extend a related deal beyond 18 May that allows the safe wartime export of grain from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. Lavrov blamed western countries for creating a deadlock.

  • Russia’s foreign ministry has said it is expelling a Moldovan diplomat in what it cast as retaliation for the expulsion last week of a Russian diplomat in Moldova. The ministry said in a statement it had summoned Moldova’s ambassador in Moscow to announce the expulsion, as well as to protest against what it called “unfriendly steps towards Russia” and “regular anti-Russian statements”.

  • Lithuania’s parliament voted on Tuesday in favour of allowing border guards to turn back migrants who illegally enter the country. Lithuania borders fellow EU states Latvia and Poland, as well as Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. In 2021, Latvia declared a state of emergency and Lithuania began planning a razor-wire fence to stop record numbers of migrants crossing its border from Belarus.

  • A former commander in Russia’s Wagner mercenary group seeking asylum in Norway has pleaded guilty to being involved in a fight outside an Oslo bar and carrying an air gun in public and said he felt “very ashamed”. Andrei Medvedev, 26, crossed the Russian-Norwegian border in January and has spoken out about his time fighting with Russian invasion forces in Ukraine.

  • Britain and France’s sports ministers insisted on Tuesday that Russian and Belarusian athletes must never compete as neutrals as recommended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) because they could still be funded by their governments.

  • A court in Russia has convicted a former police officer of publicly spreading false information about the country’s military after he criticised the war in Ukraine to his friends over the phone. The ex-officer, Semiel Vedel, was sentenced on Monday to seven years in prison and barred from working in law enforcement for four years after his release.

  • Risks of a direct military confrontation between the two nuclear powers, Russia and the United States, are steadily growing, the Tass news agency quoted a senior Russian diplomat as saying on Tuesday. Vladimir Yermakov, the foreign ministry’s head of nuclear non-proliferation, told the Russian state news agency that Washington was escalating the risks through its conduct with Moscow.

  • South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said his ruling ANC party has resolved to quit the international criminal court, which last month issued an arrest warrant against Putin. The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March, meaning Pretoria, which is due to host the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit this year, would be required to detain him on arrival.

  • It is time for the Nato alliance to “stop making excuses” and accept Ukraine as a member, as the country has demonstrated its readiness and has much to offer, Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba said. Writing in Foreign Affairs, Kuleba said the political will of the alliance had been “sorely lacking” on the issue of admitting Ukraine.

Poonch Attack: Operation Enters Day Five, Probe Zeroes In On Pakistan Based Handlers

    [ad_1]

    by Insha Shirazi

SRINAGAR: A massive operation to track down militants involved in a deadly attack on an army truck in Poonch district has entered its fifth day, with around 50 people, including 14 over ground workers, detained for questioning so far. The attack on Thursday killed five Army personnel, with one soldier seriously injured after their vehicle caught fire.

The operation is focused on Bhata Dhurian-Tota Gali and neighbouring areas, with Special Forces and the National Security Guard engaged in searching the dense forest areas. Drones, sniffer dogs, and metal detectors are being used to aid the search, and natural cave hideouts in the area are also being checked, as are areas where improvised explosive devices (IEDs) may have been planted.

Two groups of seven to eight militants are believed to have carried out the attack, with militants reportedly hiding in a culvert on the road stretch before attacking the vehicle. Over 50 bullet marks have been found on the vehicle, demonstrating the intensity of the firing by militants. The army truck was carrying fruits, vegetables, and other items from the Bhimber Gali camp to Sangiote village for Iftar celebration when the attack occurred.

The slain soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-militancy operations. The Bhimber Gali-Poonch road, closed for traffic following the attack, was reopened on Sunday, and experts from various agencies, including the National Security Guard and the National Investigation Agency, have visited the site to investigate the incident.

Army’s Northern Commander, Upendra Dwivedi, while speaking to The Tribune has confirmed that necessary action to apprehend the militants responsible for the attack is ongoing.

The Tribune reports that the agencies have narrowed their focus on two militant handlers based in Pakistan who are suspected of being responsible for the ambush.
As per The Tribune, The two militant handlers, Rafiq Nai (also known as Sultan) and Habibullah Malik (also known as Sajid Jutt), are believed to have played a key role in the attack. Both men were designated as militants by the Indian government last year. Habibullah’s name had previously come up in connection with a 2021 attack in the same forested area of Bhata Dhurian. During that encounter, which lasted over two weeks, nine soldiers were killed.

Habibullah, who was born in 1982 in Kasur, Pakistan, is associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and its offshoot, The Resistance Front (TRF). According to a notification by the Union Home Ministry, he has been involved in radicalizing and recruiting Kashmiri youths into militancy through his network. He is also suspected of involvement in drone-dropping of arms and communication systems in Jammu region for J&K-based militants, as well as behind the infiltration of militants through the Line of Control in Poonch, particularly Bhimber Gali. Habibullah was also responsible for a fidayeen attack on soldiers at Hyderpora, Srinagar, in June 2013, and the killing of the then SHO of Chadoora, Budgam, in December 2013.

Rafiq, on the other hand, is the “launching commander” of Tahreek-ul-Mujahideen and Jammu Kashmir Ghaznavi Force. He is involved in supervising narcotics and weapon smuggling and the infiltration of militants in the Poonch and Rajouri sectors.
Despite the fact that the militants responsible for the Poonch attack have fled the scene, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), police, and other agencies have been working to identify those behind the attack. The Indian government has designated both Rafiq and Habibullah as militants, and their alleged involvement in the recent attack underscores the ongoing threat posed by militants operating from across the border in Pakistan.

Quoting officials on Monday, The Tribune reported that more than 40 people have been detained for questioning in connection with the Poonch militant attack. The cordon-and-search operation (CASO) has been intensified in Bhata Dhurian-Tota Gali and nearby areas with the induction of additional troops.

They added that the militants are believed to have hidden in a culvert on a stretch of the Bhimber Gali-Poonch road before attacking the truck. More than 50 bullet marks were found on the armoured vehicle. During the search operation, troops discovered natural cave hideouts that may have been used by the militants in the past. The troops are also looking for any improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that the militants may have planted in the dense forested areas.

  • Historic Day for Kiwis living in Australia; citizens rights restored

Historic Day for Kiwis living in Australia; citizens rights restored

    [ad_1]

Auckland: Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has welcomed Australia’s historic decision to provide a new direct pathway to citizenship for New Zealanders living in Australia, saying it will bring the two countries closer together.

Australian Prime Minister Albanese made the announcement this morning, in the 50th anniversary year of the trans-Tasman travel arrangement, which allows each country’s people to live and work in the other country.

“This is the biggest improvement in the rights of New Zealanders living in Australia in a generation and restores most of the rights Kiwis had in Australia before they were revoked in 2001,” Chris Hipkins said.

    MS Education Academy

“Successive New Zealand Prime Ministers have advocated for this change for two decades. It’s pleasing that the close relationship between leaders of two like-minded governments was instrumental in reaching this outcome.

“Today’s announcement brings our nations closer together. It underscores the strength and breadth of the bonds between our countries ahead of my visit this weekend.

“These changes will make a real and meaningful difference to the lives of many New Zealanders and their children by giving those who decide to take up Australian citizenship similar rights to Australians living in New Zealand.

“Kiwis taking up Australian citizenship will still retain their New Zealand citizenship. These dual citizens are not lost to New Zealand – but draw us closer together.”

“It will apply to Kiwis on temporary, special category, visas who have arrived since 2001 and lived in Australia for four years and meet the standard criteria for citizenship including character checks and intention to reside in Australia.

“Children born in Australia since 1 July 2022 to a New Zealand parent living there will also automatically be entitled to citizenship. This will make critical services available to them.

“Most of us know someone who’s moved across the Tasman. They work hard, pay taxes and deserve a fair go. These changes deliver that and reverse erosions that have taken place over 20 years.”

The announcement delivers on Prime Minister Albanese’s commitment that no New Zealander should be left ‘permanently temporary’ in Australia.

“I acknowledge and thank Prime Minister Albanese for his instrumental role in prioritising these improvements.

“This visit was deliberately timed to be on the closest weekend to Anzac Day to reinforce our two countries’ unique Anzac bonds.

“I will be officially celebrating the new policy alongside Prime Minister Albanese at a citizenship ceremony in Brisbane tomorrow, followed by a community barbeque.

“Prime Minister Albanese and I will also visit a cemetery in Brisbane to attend the unveiling of plaques for the previously unmarked graves of soldiers who served during the two World Wars.

“The unveiling is the result of a joint project between the New Zealand Remembrance Army and the Australian Remembrance Army and is a poignant and fitting way to mark our Anzac Day connection during the visit.

“The graves of New Zealand soldiers have been identified at the ceremony and brass plaques installed so that their service contribution is remembered.

“New Zealand will hold a parallel event in Havelock, Marlborough, on Anzac Day to unveil the grave of an Australian Infantry Force private.”

    The pathway to citizenship:

    • Rights come into effect on 1 July, 2023.
    • Applies to Kiwis on temporary, special category, visas who have lived in Australia for four years, and meet the standard Australian citizenship criteria (e.g. pass a character check, adequate knowledge of Australia, a basic English competency, will continue to reside in or have a connection with Australia) and attend a citizenship ceremony.
    • Is retrospective. Those in Australia since 2001 will be able to apply directly for citizenship without gaining permanent residence first.
    • Is affordable (the fee is A$490).
    • Has no minimum income requirement or health requirement.
    • Gives Kiwis access to services and benefits, once they become citizens.
    • Allows Kiwi children born in Australia to become citizens at birth (rather than waiting till they turn 10, as they do now).
    • Applies to New Zealand citizens, including New Zealand citizens from the states and territories within the Realm of New Zealand (the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau).

Hyderabad: CBI grills Kadapa MP’s father in Viveka murder case for 5th day

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued questioning Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy and their follower Uday Kumar Reddy for a fifth day on Sunday in former minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

The duo was brought from Chanchalguda Jail to the CBI office.

The CBI court had sent them to six-day custody of the central agency last week, which will expire on Monday.

    MS Education Academy

The probe agency officials were questioning the accused about the motive behind the murder.

Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the CBI on April 16, just two days Uday Kumar Reddy was arrested on April 14 in Pulivendula town of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. Both were brought to Hyderabad where a court sent them to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear on Monday the petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy challenging the Telangana High Court order granting protection to Avinash Reddy from arrest till April 25.

Observing that an “atrocious and unacceptable” order was passed by the high court, a bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha on Friday stayed proceedings before the high court and issued notice on the plea challenging protection to Reddy

The Supreme Court, however, directed the CBI not to arrest the MP till April 24.

Avinash Reddy, cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Redddy, has been appearing before the CBI as per the interm order of the Telangana High Court on his anticipatory bail petition.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, weeks before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.
