Russian forces are mounting “round-the-clock” attacks on Ukrainian positions in the east, Ukraine’s deputy defence minister Hanna Maliar has said. “The situation is tense. Yes, it is difficult for us,” Maliar posted to Telegram. The situation in Luhansk remained difficult, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office said, without mentioning any retreats in eastern Ukraine.
Russia is sending heavy equipment and mobilised troops into the Luhansk region but Ukrainian forces continue to defend the eastern Ukrainian region, its governor, Serhiy Haidai, has said. The Russian defence ministry claimed earlier its troops had broken through two fortified lines of Ukrainian defences on the eastern front of Luhansk. It said Ukrainian troops had retreated in the face of Russian attacks, but did not say in which part of the region. Haidai said Russia’s claim that Ukrainian troops had pulled back “does not correspond to reality”.
The Wagner boss, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has admitted that his mercenary group is facing difficulties in Ukraine. “The number of Wagner units will decrease, and we will also not be able to carry out the scope of tasks that we would like to,” Prigozhin said, amid growing evidence that his political influence in the Kremlin is waning.
Six aerial targets were spotted over Kyiv during an air alert in the Ukrainian capital, and most were shot down after being engaged with air defences, according to the Kyiv military administration. In a Telegram post, it said the six Russian balloons may have been carrying corner reflectors and reconnaissance equipment. It did not specify when they flew over the capital.
Ukraine’s allies have said it is unlikely they will be able to supply the number of tanks previously promised. After a meeting in Brussels of western defence ministers, the German defence minister, Boris Pistorius, said they would not be able reach the size of a battalion. The bad news comes just after the Nato chief, Jens Stoltenberg, announced that Russia had begun a renewed offensive in the east in an attempt to take more territory before new western equipment arrives in the spring.
Nato countries are increasing the production of 155mm artillery rounds and need to ramp up that production even further to help Ukraine, Stoltenberg has said. Stoltenberg said allies have not reached conclusions on a new pledge for defence spending, but it was “obvious that we need to spend more”.
The US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, has said Ukraine has a “real good chance” of taking the initiative on the battlefield. Speaking after a meeting with Nato defence ministers in Brussels, Austin said that for every system that Nato provided, it would train troops on that system. “We’re laser-focused on making sure that we provide a capability and not just the platform,” he said.
Russia’s army is estimated to have lost nearly 40% of its prewar fleet of tanks after nine months of fighting in Ukraine, according to a count by the specialist thinktank the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS). That rises to as much as 50% for some of the key tanks used in combat, forcing Russia to reach into its still sizeable cold war-era stocks. Ukraine’s tank numbers are estimated to have increased because of the number it has captured, as well as supplies of Soviet-era tanks from its western allies.
Ukraine will receive a package of support worth £200m from the UK and other European nations for military equipment, including spare parts for tanks and artillery ammunition, the British government has announced. Britain agreed with the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Lithuania to send an initial package of support to Ukraine, the UK’s Ministry of Defence said.
The European Commission has called for a ban on the export of vital technology to Russia worth €11bn to further weaken the Kremlin’s war effort, cementing what EU officials have called the bloc’s toughest-ever sanctions. The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said the EU was targeting industrial goods that Russia needed, such as electronic components for drones and helicopters; spare parts for trucks and jet engines; and construction equipment such as antennas or cranes that could be turned to military uses.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has welcomed Sweden’s prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, in Kyiv. Zelenskiy praised Sweden’s assistance, saying: “Archer is one of the best artillery pieces in the world. Sweden is a top five supplier of support to Ukraine and I thank Sweden for that support.” Kristersson did not rule out sending JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, but cautioned that the west’s response had to be coordinated.
The Netherlands has said it has not changed its stance on the possible delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, following a report that it had rolled back on its support. It leases 18 Leopards from Germany, and the Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, has said the Netherlands is willing to deliver them to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s defence minister, Oleksii Reznikov, has said that Zelenskiy has asked him to remain in his current post, after a corruption scandal beset his ministry and put his role in doubt. Asked whether he expected to continue as defence minister in the months to come, Reznikov replied: “Yes, it was the decision of my president.”
A British national who was killed in Ukraine has been named by family and friends as Jonathan Shenkin. Shenkin, 45, from Glasgow, “died as a hero in an act of bravery as a paramedic”, his family wrote in a tribute on social media. He is the eighth Briton to be killed in Ukraine since the conflict began.
At least 6,000 children from Ukraine have attended Russian “re-education” camps in the past year, according to a new report published in the US. Since the start of the war, children as young as four months living in the occupied areas have been taken to 43 camps across Russia, the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab report says. Russia has also unnecessarily expedited the adoption and fostering of children from Ukraine in what could constitute a war crime, it said.
Switzerland has said the seizing of private Russian assets would undermine the country’s constitution. In a statement, the Swiss government said “the expropriation of private assets of lawful origin without compensation is not permissible under Swiss law”.
The journalist Maria Ponomarenko has been sentenced to six years in prison in Russia for “distributing false information about the Russian army” after she posted on social media about the attack on the drama theatre in Mariupol. She has also been banned from journalism for five years.
The UN’s humanitarian aid and refugee agencies have said they are seeking $5.6bn (£4.6bn) to help millions of people in Ukraine and countries that have taken in fleeing Ukrainians. The bulk of the joint appeal is for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which aims to help more than 11 million people by funnelling funds through more than 650 partner organisations.

Assam: Eviction drive reaches 2nd day in Sonitpur; Bengali-speaking Muslims most affected

Tezpur: The drive to evict “encroachers” from nearly 1,900 hectares of forest and revenue land in Assam’s Sonitpur district continued for the second day on Wednesday, with 12,000-odd people, who were allegedly staying there illegally for decades, left in the lurch, a senior official said.

Since morning, the administration started the eviction in five places of Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby government land, he said.

“Today, we are carrying out the eviction exercise at Lathimari, Ganesh Tapu, Baghe Tapu, Gulirpar and Siali. So far it has been peaceful, and no untoward incident has been reported,” the official said.

With a huge posse of armed security personnel, the Sonitpur district administration had on Tuesday started the exercise to clear “encroached” land in the wildlife sanctuary and nearby revenue villages on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river in central Assam.

While most of the occupants, predominantly Bengali-speaking Muslims, had left their houses after receiving notices in the last few weeks, some were in the process to vacate their premises when the eviction drive started, some of the affected families said.

“Illegal settlers” were seen loading their belongings in tractor trolleys at various places since morning even as bulldozers were deployed to demolish their houses.

While collecting her belongings from the demolished house, Firoza Begum alleged that the administration had mentioned it would start eviction from February 20 but suddenly “started eviction from today without any intimation”.

The opposition Congress slammed the BJP-led government for the eviction drive and said many of the affected families are entitled to have land rights according to the Forest Rights Act, 2006.

Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra told PTI on Tuesday that thousands of people “illegally occupied” the forest and nearby areas for decades and the administration has decided to clear “encroachment” on 1,892 hectares of land during the ongoing exercise till Thursday.

“Of this, 1,401 hectares of land falls under the sanctuary and the remaining is government land. In the forest, 1,758 families were living, comprising 6,965 people,” he said.

On the government land, 755 families were residing, comprising 4,645 people according to the latest survey, the official said.

Mishra said, “We discovered that this area was never surveyed and people were in confusion if their villages fall under Nagaon or Sonitpur district. That is why government schools, Anganwadi centres, mosques and other structures were built by people who thought it is Nagaon district.”

The schools and other government institutions will be attached to nearby such centres in non-encroached land in the coming days so that education and welfare measures are not affected, he said.

Over 1,700 personnel from the Assam Police and CRPF along with staffers from civil administration and the forest department are engaged in the exercise. Around 100 bulldozers, excavators and tractors were pressed into action since the morning to demolish the structures and clear the land, the DC said.

After the eviction exercise is over, the forest department will start an afforestation drive and plant thousands of saplings, a forest official said.

Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 44.06 sq km on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river and is located around 180 km east of Guwahati and 40 km south of Tezpur town.

The protected forest forms an integral part of the Laokhowa-Burachapori ecosystem and is a notified buffer zone of the Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve. It is home to one-horned rhinoceros, tiger, leopard, wild buffalo, hog deer, wild pig and elephants.

Burachapori’s bird list on the other hand includes the highly endangered Bengal Florican, Black-necked Stork, Mallard, Open billed Stork, Teal and Whistling Duck among others.

It has been a reserve forest since 1974 under the Sonitpur district forest department and it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in July 1995.

In November 2013, the forest was shifted to Nagaon Wildlife Division, but the entire area is under the Tezpur sub-division of Sonitpur district and also falls under the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency.

The drive in Burachapori is the fourth major eviction exercise in Assam within just two months. The exercise in Nagoan’s Batadrava on December 19 last year has been considered one of the largest in the region as it uprooted more than 5,000 alleged encroachers. It was followed by another drive on December 26 to clear 400 bighas in Barpeta.

In Pava Reserve Forest under the Lakhimpur district, the administration had undertaken an eviction drive to clear 450 hectares of encroached land on January 10, which continued for several days, displacing around 500 “illegally settled” families. Also, a large area of forest-turned-agricultural land was also cleared.

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dispensation has been carrying out eviction drives in different parts of the state since it assumed power in May 2021.

Setting aside opposition criticism, Sarma had on December 21 last year told the Assembly that eviction drives to clear government and forest lands in Assam would continue as long as the BJP is in power.

Valentine’s Day celebrated across country, right-wing outfits play spoilsport

New Delhi: Couples – young and old – celebrated Valentine’s Day on Tuesday with flowers and gifts even as a few right-wing outfits played spoilsport in some parts of the country.

Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh celebrated the occasion as “cow love day” while the Bajrang Dal held mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa to oppose the “spread of western culture”.

After two years of muted festivities due to the Covid pandemic, the festival of love was in full bloom with people flocking to malls, restaurants and popular hangout zones in different parts of the country.

With abundant snowfall turning the Kashmir landscape white this winter, love birds made a beeline to resorts such as Gulmarg in north Kashmir and Pahalgam in south Kashmir.

“We came to this beautiful Valley to make Valentine’s Day a memorable one. The weather is nice and I am feeling lucky that we were able to plan the celebrations in Kashmir,” Madhya Pradesh native Saket Sharma said.

However, members of outfits like the Bajrang Dal were again out on the streets targeting couples accusing them of “indulging in vulgarity” in the name of love.

Bajrang Dal members drove away couples from a garden in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar and organised mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

In a video of the incident that went viral on social media platforms, nearly 10 Bajrang Dal activists armed with sticks were seen shouting slogans and driving away couples sitting inside the Central Vista garden located opposite the Assembly complex in Gandhinagar.

While the Opposition Congress strongly condemned the act, the Gandhinagar police swung into action and summoned Bajrang Dal activists involved in the protest.

Shaktisinh Zala, convener of the Bajrang Dal’s Gandhinagar unit, said the outfit’s members entered the garden to register their protest against Valentine’s Day, which he claimed, reflected “western culture”.

“We were not harassing anyone. Bajrang Dal workers were only opposing western culture and people indulging in vulgarity in the name of love today. It is our duty to show the right path to Hindu youths and daughters,” Zala told reporters.

Sources said police officials have summoned protesters seen in the viral video for questioning.

In Nagpur, Bajrang Dal members protested against Valentine’s Day by taking out a rally in the city and organising mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa at Durga Mata Temple in the Sadar area.

The rally passed through prominent areas of Nagpur and a large number of police personnel were deployed on the route to prevent untoward incidents.

The rally concluded at the Samvidhan Square, where tributes were paid to the CRPF personnel killed on February 14, 2019, in a terror attack at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides Bajrang Dal members, functionaries of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) were also present on the occasion.

Shiv Sena (UBT) activists raised slogans against Valentine’s Day celebrations and displayed oil soaked sticks to deter couples from celebrating the festival of love in public on Tuesday in Sagar town of Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh minister offered jaggery and rotis to cows on Valentine’s Day and said that they should be treated as mothers.

He said there is no animal like a cow in the world whose “mal-mutra” (stool and urine) is “pious”.

“We have three mothers — our mother, who gives us birth, ‘gau mata’ (cow) and Bharat Mata. First love should be for our mother, then ‘gau mata’ (cow) and then Bharat Mata ‘ko pranaam karna chahiye’ (should be saluted),” the minister said.

Singh offered gud’ (jaggery) and rotis to cows in the Bakshi ka Talab area here to mark the day.

He urged people to celebrate “cow love day” on Valentine’s Day.

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had on last Monday appealed to the people to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’.

The directive was later withdrawn on the directions of the government after the move became the subject of memes on social media.

To “show love to those who need it the most”, Delhi-based NGO Wishes and Blessings treated more than 2,000 impoverished children, including HIV positive, visually impaired, orphans and homeless, throughout Delhi-NCR to cupcakes on the day.

Okhla, Vasant Vihar, Nizamuddin, Munirka, Noida, Gurgaon, Madipur village, Sarai Kale Khan, Sadiq Nagar, and Maharani Bagh were some of the areas where the cupcakes were distributed, Geetanjali Chopra, Founder of the NGO said.

“We are very grateful to have a group of compassionate bakers and volunteers who have come together to show love to those who need it the most,” Chopra said.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh on Tuesday celebrated Valentine’s Day as “cow love day” by offering jaggery and rotis to cows and said that they should be treated as mothers.

He said there is no animal like a cow in the world whose “mal-mutra” (stool and urine) is “pious”.

“Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated all over the world. There are many relations like mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, and one’s love should be expressed,” Singh told reporters.

Singh offered gud’ (jaggery) and rotis to cows in the Bakshi ka Talab area here to mark the day.

He urged people to celebrate “cow love day” on Valentine’s Day.

“They (people) should go to a ‘gaushala’ (cow shelter home), feed roti to a cow and pray to her,” Singh said.

“Even a simple visit to ‘Gaushala’ can keep tension away as there is an emotional connect to it. By entering ‘Gaushala’ the door to development opens. There are no such animals (like cows) in the world whose ‘mal-mutra’ (stool-urine) is pious. Its dung and urine are also pious. In cow’s dung lives Lakshmi,” the minister added.

Exclusive: Hyderabad-based radio news reader’s message on World Radio Day

Hyderabad: One of the renowned columnists Margaret Noonan once said, ”TV gives everyone an image, but radio gives birth to a million images in a million brains.” And we at Siasat.com find it relevant to recall her quote as intellectuals are celebrating World Radio Day today.

UNESCO has declared February 13 as ‘World Radio Day’ because United Nations Radio was first established on this day in 1946. Radio, also known as the wireless telegraph was used for war purposes during World War I but who was aware that it would emerge as one of the effective and persuasive means of communication pacifists will swear by? Everything changes with time and this write-up will help you hark back to the days when radio used to be the one and only potent means of communication.

History

Italian scientist Gugliemo Marconi invented a device that he called ‘The Wireless Telegraph’ in 1895. He used it to transmit Morse codes. As he used radio waves for transmission, the device was later called ‘Radio.’ On December 24, 1906, Reginald Fessenden sent the first long-distance transmission of the human voice and music from his station in Massachusetts(USA).

Radio was still in its infancy until Edwin Armstrong developed the superheterodyne circuit in 1918 and later in 1933, it was also discovered how FM broadcasts could be produced. Here begins the story. Radio of creative people have started reaching to East. The most powerful propaganda tool was now used to spread love and information.

In June 1923, the Radio Club of Bombay started radio broadcasting in India. After that rest is history as All India Radio (AIR) has ruled the hearts of Indians since 1937.

Golden Era of Radio in India

If you are born in the 90s, then we are pretty sure that you might have relished those moments when all your family members sitting in a dining hall used to listen to news broadcasted by ‘Akashvani’ as prime times news. You might have witnessed people walking through busy streets along with their radio sets. You might have also seen cricket lovers listening to commentary in groups under the shadow of Banyan or Chinar trees.

From bringing batteries from the shopkeeper and carrying portable radio sets along with you the whole day to listening to them on your mobile phone, February 13 will only make you reminisce about those days.

On this special day, Siasat.com had an exclusive conversation with one of the popular newsreaders at AIR Hyderabad, Suresh Dharmapuri. He spoke about how technology has affected the radio earlier but with time it proved to be fruitful as audiences can listen to their favourite radio programmes at any time and any place using the internet.

”Radio is not only that radio what you think. FM has changed the way of broadcasting on the radio. I am happy that people listen to the radio in cars, shops and malls. AIR and other radio stations have their own applications now. Radio is totally digitised now,” Suresh said.

He further added, ”From lorries to auto-rickshaws, you will see people listening to FM as the range has been increased and listening to the radio using an antenna will give you a special feel instead of listening to it later on podcasts or other social media apps.”

He opined that no one can compete with programmes broadcasted on AIR or FM Rainbow. They are evergreen and people still listen to these programmes. He also said that ‘ Mann Ki Baat’ in which PM Modi addresses the nation has gained a lot of popularity and it has helped a lot to get back a huge chunk of listeners.

”Since the advent of FM radio, most people got an opportunity to give voice to the radio and I think it helped to bring out the innate talent of various popular RJs. You need to be very creative to write the script of radio programmes and to me the skill of creating images in the minds of the audience with audio is highly appreciable,” he concluded.

‘With radio, the listener absorbs everything’ and yes Bob Edwards was right. Radio waves make you feel alive as most people are found with subliminal minds nowadays due to hustle and bustle of the surroundings and other personal reasons. Elon Musk spends long day at Twitter HQ, fixes 2 key problems

New Delhi: Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said that engineers resolved two significant problems on the platform during a “long day at Twitter HQ” with him.

He said that the ‘Fanout service for Following feed’ was getting overloaded when “I tweeted, resulting in up to 95 per cent of my tweets not getting delivered at all”.

“Following is now pulling from search (aka Earlybird). When Fanout crashed, it would also destroy anyone else’s tweets in queue,” Musk added.

He also said that the recommendation algorithm was using absolute block count, rather than percentile block count, “causing accounts with many followers to be dumped, even if blocks were only 0.1 per cent of followers”.

“Also, it’s trivial to bot spam accounts with blocks,” the Twitter CEO said.

Musk also said that oversized fonts and undersized paragraph spacing will be fixed this week.

“Advertising also needs to be semantic keyword-based, so it’s contextually relevant. Amazingly, ads shown when doing twitter searches don’t consider the search words! We’re changing that as fast as possible,” Musk informed.

When a user said that Blocks are quite powerful and “seems like for accounts with a lot of reach, they’ll probably get blocked a lot”, Musk replied that the giant block lists are problematic.

“They mess up the recommendation system & create a DDoS vector,” he added.

After all-round criticism, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on Friday withdrawn its appeal to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’. February 14 is observed as ‘Valentine’s Day’ across the world.

In a notice, the board’s Secretary S.K. Dutta said, “As directed by the competent authority and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the appeal issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for celebration of Cow Hug Day on February 14 stands withdrawn.”

‘Khelo India Winter Games’: Heavy Winds Force Organisers’ To Partly Call Off Day 2 Activities

Srinagar, Feb 11 (GNS): Heavy winds played a spoilsport on Day 2 at third edition of ‘Khelo India Games’, being held at famous ski-resort Gulmarg, as the organizers’ had to partly call off multiple sports activities as a precautionary measure.

As learnt by GNS, the strong winds blew far and wide at the sports venue, especially on Kongdori heights. The organisers’ (Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council) as a sort of precautionary measure called off sports activities at Alpine G Slalom, Kongdori, while the main/lower Gulmarg saw the activities being conducted normally.

An official told GNS that the winds though a routine occurrence at Gulmarg, the suspension of activities was decided for the overall safety of participants.

The games scheduled for day 2 at Golf Club included; Cross Country 15 Km Sprint Senior Men, Cross Country 10 Km Sprint Senior women, Cross Country 2 Km Sprint Junior Boys, Cross Country 1.5 Km Sprint Junior Girls, Bobsleighing & Skeleton and Snow Shoe long distance event of men and women category.

The Ice hockey and Ice-skating competitions were held at Rink Gulmarg.

Notably, the four day edition kicked off with much anticipation and fanfare at the famous ski-resort on February 10 – and will culminate on February 14, 2023. (GNS)
